Abstract:String theory is a candidate theory in particle physics for reconciling quantum mechanics and general relativity, i.e. quantum gravity. Moreover, it’s also a candidate of TOE (“theory of everything”), describing all the known fundamental forces and matters in our universe in a mathematically complete system. In conventional theories, elementary particles are mathematical points, whereas, the fundamental objects in string theory are 1-dimensional oscillating lines or loops.
The M-Theory Three-Form and Singular Geometries

Abstract:While M- and F-theory compactifications describe a much larger class of vacua than perturbative string compactifications, they typically need singularities to generate non-abelian gauge fields and charged matter. The physical explanation involves M2-branes wrapped on vanishing cycles. Here we seek an alternative explanation that could address outstanding issues such as the description of nilpotent branches, stability walls, frozen singularities and so forth. To this end we use a model in which the three-form is related to the Chern-Simons form of a bundle. The model has a one-form non-abelian gauge symmetry which normally eliminates all the degrees of freedom associated to the bundle. However by restricting the transformations to preserve the bundle along the vanishing cycles, we may get new degrees of freedom associated to singularities, without appealing to wrapped M2-branes. The analysis can be simplified by gauge-fixing the one-form symmetry using higher-dimensional instanton equations. We explain how this mechanism leads to the natural emergence of phenomena such as enhanced ADE gauge symmetries, nilpotent branches, charged matter fields and their holomorphic couplings.

In the course of these explorations, basics of supersymmetry and supersymmetry breaking, string moduli, cosmological issues, and other questions are addressed. The notion of approximate moduli and their possible role plays a central role in the discussion.

Abstract:In the quest for mathematical foundations of M-theory, the "Hypothesis H" that fluxes are quantized in Cohomotopy theory, implies, on flat but possibly singular spacetimes, that M-brane charges locally organize into equivariant homotopy groups of spheres. Here we show how this leads to a correspondence between phenomena conjectured in M-theory and fundamental mathematical concepts/results in stable homotopy, generalized cohomology and Cobordism theory Mf: Stems of homotopy groups correspond to charges of probe p-branes near black b-branes; stabilization within a stem is the boundary-bulk transition; the Adams d-invariant measures G4-flux; trivialization of the d-invariant corresponds to H3-flux; refined Toda brackets measure H3-flux; the refined Adams e-invariant sees the H3-charge lattice; vanishing Adams e-invariant implies consistent global C3-fields; Conner-Floyd's e-invariant is H3-flux seen in the Green-Schwarz mechanism; the Hopf invariant is the M2-brane Page charge (G7-flux); the Pontrjagin-Thom theorem associates the polarized brane worldvolumes sourcing all these charges. Cobordism in the third stable stem witnesses spontaneous KK-compactification on K3-surfaces; the order of the third stable stem implies 24 NS5/D7-branes in M/F-theory on K3. Quaternionic orientations correspond to unit H3-fluxes near M2-branes; complex orientations lift these unit H3-fluxes to heterotic M-theory with heterotic line bundles. In fact, we find quaternionic/complex Ravenel-orientations bounded in dimension; and we find the bound to be 10, as befits spacetime dimension 10+1.

Phenomenology of Non-Standard Embedding and Five-branes in M-Theory

Abstract:We study the phenomenology of the strong-coupling limit of $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string obtained from M-theory, using a Calabi-Yau compactification. After summarizing the standard embedding results, we concentrate on non-standard embedding vacua as well as vacua where non-perturbative objects as five-branes are present. We analyze in detail the different scales of the theory, eleven-dimensional Planck mass, compactification scale, orbifold scale, and how they are related taking into account higher order corrections. To obtain the phenomenologically favored GUT scale is easier than in standard embedding vacua. To lower this scale to intermediate ($\approx 10^{11}$ GeV) or 1 TeV values or to obtain the radius of the orbifold as large as a millimetre is possible. However, we point out that these special limits are unnatural. Finally, we perform a systematic analysis of the soft supersymmetry-breaking terms. We point out that scalar masses larger than gaugino masses can easily be obtained unlike the standard embedding case and the weakly-coupled heterotic string.

The Geometry, Branes and Applications of Exceptional Field Theory

Abstract:This is a review of exceptional field theory: a generalisation of Kaluza-Klein theory that unifies the metric and $p$-form gauge field degrees of freedom of supergravity into a generalised or extended geometry, whose additional coordinates may be viewed as conjugate to brane winding modes. This unifies the maximal supergravities, treating their previously-hidden exceptional Lie symmetries as a fundamental geometric symmetry. Duality orbits of solutions simplify into single objects, that in many cases have simple geometric interpretations, for instance as wave or monopole-type solutions. It also provides a route to explore exotic or non-geometric aspects of M-theory, such as exotic branes, U-folds, and more novel sorts of non-Riemannian spaces.

Abstract:I present a point of view about what M Theory is and how it is related to the real world, which departs in certain crucial respects from conventional wisdom. I argue against the possibility of a background independent formulation of the theory, or of a Poincare invariant, Supersymmetry violating vacuum state. A fundamental assumption is black hole dominance of high energy physics. Much of this paper is a compilation of things I have said elsewhere. I review a crude argument for the critical exponent connecting the gravitino mass and the cosmological constant, and propose a framework for finding a quantum theory of de Sitter space.

Abstract:We review particle physics model building in type IIB string theory and F-theory. This is a region in the landscape where in principle many of the key ingredients required for a realistic model of particle physics can be combined successfully. We begin by reviewing moduli stabilisation within this framework and its implications for supersymmetry breaking. We then review model building tools and developments in the weakly coupled type IIB limit, for both local D3-branes at singularities and global models of intersecting D7-branes. Much of recent model building work has been in the strongly coupled regime of F-theory due to the presence of exceptional symmetries which allow for the construction of phenomenologically appealing Grand Unified Theories. We review both local and global F-theory model building starting from the fundamental concepts and tools regarding how the gauge group, matter sector and operators arise, and ranging to detailed phenomenological properties explored in the literature.

Note on the Quantum Mechanics of M Theory

Abstract:We observe that the existence of black holes limits the extent to which M Theory (or indeed any quantum theory of gravity) can be described by conventional quantum mechanics. Although there is no contradiction with the fundamental properties of quantum mechanics, one can prove that expectation values of Heisenberg operators at fixed times cannot exist in an ordinary asymptotic Lorentz frame. Only operators whose matrix elements between the vacuum and energy eigenstates with energy greater than the Planck scale are artificially cut off, can have conventional Green's functions. This implies a Planck scale cutoff on the possible localization of measurements in time. A similar behavior arises also in ``little string theories''. We argue that conventional quantum mechanics in light cone time is compatible with the properties of black holes if there are more than four non-compact flat dimensions, and also with the properties of ``little string theories''. We contrast these observations with what is known about M Theory in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetimes.

BPS Geometry, AdS/CFT, and String Theory

Abstract:We first study BPS geometries dual to half-BPS states of field theories with 32 supercharges. These field theories are N = 4 SYM on R×S3, M2 brane theory and M5 brane theory. The dynamics of the half-BPS states in N = 4 SYM is reduced to a matrix quantum mechanics, and they are characterized by droplets on the two dimensional phase space. The geometries dual to these states are specified by boundary conditions on a two-plane, which are identified as the phase space. The phase space gives unified description of half-BPS perturbative and non-perturbative excitations aboveAdS5×S. The half-BPS geometries in the M theory case are described by a Toda equation with similar but more complicated boundary conditions on a two-plane. We then study BPS geometries dual to the vacua of field theories with 16 supercharges. The first class of theory has a bosonic U(1) × SO(4) × SO(4) symmetry, they include the mass deformed M2 brane theory, D4 or M5 brane theory on S3, and intersecting NS5 brane theory. Their vacua are characterized by droplets on a cylinder or torus. The second class of theory has a SU(2|4) symmetry, they include the 0+1d plane-wave matrix model, 2+1d super Yang-Mills theory on R×S2, N = 4 Super Yang-Mills on R×S/Zk, and NS5 brane theory on R× S5. The vacua of these theories are described by electrostatic configurations with many disks under external potential. The region between disks describe NS5 brane geometries. Finally we study instanton solutions and superpotentials for the vacua of the plane-wave matrix model and 2+1d super Yang-Mills theory and discuss the emergence of the vacuum geometries.

Abstract:After a brief digression on the current landscape of theoretical physics and on some open questions pertaining to coherence with experimental results, still to be settled, it is shown that the properties of the Deformed Minkowski space lead to a plurality of potential physical phenomena that should occur, provided that the resulting formalisms can be considered as useful models for the descrip-tion of some aspects of physical reality. A list is given of available experimental evidences not easy to be interpreted, at present, by means of the more established models, such as the standard model with its variants aimed at overcoming its descriptive limits; these evidences could be candidates to verify the predictions stemming from the properties of the Deformed Minkowski space. The list includes: anomalies in the double-slit-like experiments; nuclear metamorphosis; torsional anten-nas, as well as the physical effect of the "geometric vacuum" (as defined in analogy with quantum vacuum), in the absence of external electromagnetic field, when crossing critical thresholds of energy parameter values, energy density in space and energy density in time.

Abstract:These lecture notes review the theoretical background to the Higgs boson, provide an introduction to its phenomenology, and describe the experimental tests that lead us to think that "beyond any reasonable doubt, it is a Higgs boson". Motivations for expecting new physics beyond the Standard Model are recalled, and the Standard Model effective field theory is advocated as a tool to help search for it. The phenomenology of $N = 1$ and $N = 2$ supersymmetric Higgs bosons is reviewed, and the prospects for possible future Higgs factories are previewed.

Abstract:We investigate supervised learning in neural networks. We consider a multi-layered feed-forward network with back propagation. We find that the network of small-world connectivity reduces the learning error and learning time when compared to the networks of regular or random connectivity. Our study has potential applications in the domain of data-mining, image processing, speech recognition, and pattern recognition.

Abstract:The status of exponential scalar potentials in supergravity is reviewed, and updated. One version of N = 8 D = 4 supergravity with a positive exponential potential, obtainable from a `non-compactification' of M-theory, is shown to have an accelerating cosmological solution that realizes `eternal quintessence'. Some implications for a de Sitter version of the domain wall/QFT correspondence are discussed.

Abstract:5-brane configurations describing 5d field theories are promoted to an M theory description a la Witten in terms of polynomials in two complex variables. The coefficients of the polynomials are the Coulomb branch. This picture resolves apparent singularities at vertices and reveals exponentially small corrections. These corrections ask to be compared to world line instanton corrections. From a different perspective this procedure may be used to define a diagrammatic representation of polynomials in two variables.

Flux Quantization on M5-branes

Abstract:We highlight the need for global completion of the field content in the M5-brane sigma-model analogous to Dirac's charge/flux quantization, and we point out that the superspace Bianchi identities on the worldvolume and on its ambient supergravity background constrain the M5's flux-quantization law to be in a non-abelian cohomology theory rationally equivalent to a twisted form of co-Homotopy. In order to clearly bring out this subtle point we give a streamlined re-derivation of the worldvolume 3-flux via M5 "super-embeddings". Finally, assuming the flux-quantization law to actually be in co-Homotopy ("Hypothesis H") we show how this implies Skyrmion-like solitons on general M5-worldvolumes and (abelian) anyonic solitons on the boundaries of "open M5-branes" in heterotic M-theory.

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology

Abstract:We review the status of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and the CP-violating phases in the CKM-unitarity triangle. The emphasis in these lecture notes is on $B$-meson physics, though we also review the current status and issues in the light quark sector of this matrix. Selected applications of theoretical methods in QCD used in the interpretation of data are given and some of the issues restricting theoretical precision on the CKM matrix elements discussed. The overall consistency of the CKM theory with the available data in flavour physics is impressive and we quantify this consistency. Current data also show some anomalies which, however, are not yet statistically significant. They are discussed briefly. Some benchmark measurements that remain to be done in experiments at the $B$-factories and hadron colliders are listed. Together with the already achieved results, they will provide unprecedented tests of the CKM theory and by the same token may lead to the discovery of new physics.
