Abstract:In this paper, we introduce six axioms for relative Bott-Chern secondary characteristic classes and prove the uniqueness and existence theorem for them. Such a work provides us a natural way to understand and hence to prove the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem.

Abstract:This article can be seen as a sequel to the first author's article ``Chern classes of the tangent bundle on the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane'', where he calculates the total Chern class of the Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane by proving a result on the existence of certain universal formulas expressing characteristic classes on the Hilbert schemes in term of Nakajima's creation operators. The purpose of this work is (at least) two-fold. First of all, we clarify the notion of ``universality'' of certain formulas about the cohomology of the Hilbert schemes by defining a universal algebra of creation operators. This helps us to reformulate and extend a lot of the first author's previous results in a very precise manner. Secondly, we are able to extend the previously found results by showing how to calculate any characteristic class of the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane in terms of the creation operators. In particular, we have included the calculation of the total Segre class and the square root of the Todd class. Using this methods, we have also found a way to calculate any characteristic class of any tautological sheaf on the Hilbert scheme of points on the affine plane. This in fact gives another complete description of the ring structure of the cohomology spaces of the Hilbert schemes of points on the affine plane.

Localization of Bott-Chern classes and Hermitian residues

Abstract:We develop a theory of Cech-Bott-Chern cohomology and in this context we naturally come up with the relative Bott-Chern cohomology. In fact Bott-Chern cohomology has two relatives and they all arise from a single complex. Thus we study these three cohomologies in a unified way and obtain a long exact sequence involving the three. We then study the localization problem of characteristic classes in the relative Bott-Chern cohomology. For this we define the cup product and integration in our framework and we discuss local and global duality homomorphisms. After reviewing some materials on connections, we give a vanishing theorem relevant to our localization. With these, we prove a residue theorem for a vector bundle admitting a Hermitian connection compatible with an action of the non-singular part of a singular distribution. As a typical case, we discuss the action of a distribution on the normal bundle of an invariant submanifold (so-called the Camacho-Sad action) and give a specific example.

Abstract:We prove a blow-up formula for Bott-Chern characteristic classes of compact complex manifolds. To this end, we establish a version of Riemann-Roch without denominators for the Bott-Chern characteristic classes. In particular, as an application, we study the behaviour of the Bott-Chern characteristic classes of the Iwasawa manifold under a blow-up transformation.

Abstract:What are called secondary characteristic classes in Chern-Weil theory are a refinement of ordinary characteristic classes of principal bundles from cohomology to differential cohomology. We consider the problem of refining the construction of secondary characteristic classes from cohomology sets to cocycle spaces; and from Lie groups to higher connected covers of Lie groups by smooth infinity-groups, i.e., by smooth groupal A-infinity-spaces. Namely, we realize differential characteristic classes as morphisms from infinity-groupoids of smooth principal infinity-bundles with connections to infinity-groupoids of higher U(1)-gerbes with connections. This allows us to study the homotopy fibers of the differential characteristic maps thus obtained and to show how these describe differential obstruction problems. This applies in particular to the higher twisted differential spin structures called twisted differential string structures and twisted differential fivebrane structures.

Elliptic classes of Schubert varieties via Bott–Samelson resolution

Abstract:<p>Based on recent advances on the relation between geometry and representation theory, we propose a new approach to elliptic Schubert calculus. We study the equivariant elliptic characteristic classes of Schubert varieties of the generalized full flag variety <math>G/B</math>. For this first we need to twist the notion of elliptic characteristic class of Borisov–Libgober by a line bundle, and thus allow the elliptic classes to depend on extra variables. Using the Bott–Samelson resolution of Schubert varieties we prove a BGG‐type recursion for the elliptic classes, and study the Hecke algebra of our elliptic BGG operators. For <math>G=GLn(C)</math> we find representatives of the elliptic classes of Schubert varieties in natural presentations of the K theory ring of <math>G/B</math>, and identify them with the Tarasov–Varchenko weight function. As a byproduct we find another recursion, different from the known R‐matrix recursion for the fixed point restrictions of weight functions. On the other hand the R‐matrix recursion generalizes for arbitrary reductive group <math>G</math>.</p>

Abstract:We provide a natural interpretation of the secondary Euler characteristic and introduce higher Euler characteristics. For a compact oriented manifold of odd dimension, the secondary Euler characteristic recovers the Kervaire semi-characteristic. We prove basic properties of the higher invariants and illustrate their use. We also introduce motivic variants.

Abstract:We study the volumes of transcendental and possibly non-closed Bott-Chern $(1,1)$-classes on an arbitrary compact complex manifold $X$. We show that the latter belongs to the class $\mathcal{C}$ of Fujiki if and only if it has the $\textit{bounded mass property}$ -- i.e., its Monge-Ampère volumes have a uniform upper-bound -- and there exists a closed Bott-Chern class with positive volume. This yields a positive answer to a conjecture of Demailly-Păun-Boucksom. To this end we extend to the hermitian context the notion of non-pluripolar products of currents, allowing for the latter to be merely ${\it quasi}$-${\it closed}$ and ${\it quasi}$-${\it positive}$. We establish a quasi-monotonicity property of Monge-Ampère masses, and moreover show the existence of solutions to degenerate complex Monge-Ampère equations in big classes, together with uniform a priori estimates. This extends to the hermitian context fundamental results of Boucksom-Eyssidieux-Guedj-Zeriahi.

Abstract:The relative Gromov seminorm is a finer invariant than stable commutator length where a relative homology class is fixed. We show a duality result between bounded cohomology and the relative Gromov seminorm, analogously to Bavard duality for scl. We give an application to computations of scl in graphs of groups. We also explain how our duality result can be given a purely algebraic interpretation via a relative version of the Hopf formula. Moreover, we show that this leads to a natural generalisation of a result of Calegari on a connection between scl and the rotation quasimorphism.

Abstract:We show that for smooth complex projective varieties the most general combinations of chern numbers that are invariant under the K-equivalence relation consist of the complex elliptic genera. Combined with a recent result of Totaro, we deduce that up to complex cobordism any K-equivalence can be decomposed into a sequence of classical flops.

Abstract:Using symmetrized Grassmannians we give an algebraic geometric presentation, in the level of classifying spaces, of the Chern character and its relation to Chern classes. This allows one to define, for any projective variety $X$, a Chern character map from the "holomorphic K-theory of X to its morphic cohomology (introduced by Friedlander and Lawson). The holomorphic K-theory of $X$, introduced by Lawson, Lima-Filho and Michelsohn and also by Friedlander and Walker, is defined in terms a group-completion of the space of algebraic morphisms from X into BU. It has been further studied by the authors in a companion paper. Holomorphic K-theory sits between algebraic K-theory and topological K-theory in the same way that morphic cohomology sits between motivic cohomology and ordinary cohomology. Our constructions provide a bridge between these two worlds. We also realize Chern classes in the case where X is smooth, and establish a universal relation between the Chern character and the Chern classes. We use classical constructions with algebraic cycles and infinite symmetric products of projective spaces. The latter can be seen as the classifying space for motivic cohomology, and under this perspective our constructions are essentially motivic.
Relative tilting theory in abelian categories I: Auslander-Buchweitz-Reiten approximations theory in subcategories and cotorsion pairs

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a special kind of relative (co)resolutions associated to a pair of classes of objects in an abelian category $\mathcal{C}.$ We will see that, by studying these relative (co)resolutions, we get a possible generalization of a part of the Auslander-Buchweitz approximation theory that is useful for developing $n$-$\mathcal{X}$-tilting theory in [4]. With this goal, new concepts as $\mathcal{X}$-complete and $\mathcal{X}$-hereditary pairs are introduced as a generalization of complete and hereditary cotorsion pairs. These pairs appear in a natural way in the study of the category of representations of a quiver in an abelian category [5]. Our main results will include an existence theorem for relative approximations, among other results related with closure properties of relative (co)resolution classes and relative homological dimensions which are essential in the development of $n$-$\mathcal{X}$-tilting theory in [4].

Abstract:We show the compatibility of the differential geometric and the topological construction of equivariant characteristic classes for compact Lie groups. Our analysis motivates a differential geometric construction for equivariant characteristic classes in the non-compact case. This compatibility is generally assumed and used in various cases, but there is only a proof for compact connected Lie groups in the literature, see the work of Raoul Bott and Loring Tu. Our proof applies and generalizes ideas of Johan Dupont and Ezra Getzler.

Abstract:We define real-valued characteristic classes of flat complex vector bundles, and flat real vector bundles with a duality structure. We construct pushforwards of such vector bundles with vanishing characteristic classes. These pushforwards involve the analytic torsion form in the first case and the eta form of the signature operator in the second case. We show that the pushforwards are independent of the geometric choices made in the constructions and hence are topological in nature. We give evidence that in the first case, the pushforwards are given topologically by the Becker-Gottlieb-Dold transfer.
A characteristic map for the holonomy groupoid of a foliation

Abstract:We prove a generalisation of Bott's vanishing theorem for the full transverse frame holonomy groupoid of any transversely orientable foliated manifold. As a consequence we obtain a characteristic map encoding both primary and secondary characteristic classes. Previous descriptions of this characteristic map are formulated for the Morita equivalent étale groupoid obtained via a choice of complete transversal. By working with the full holonomy groupoid we obtain novel geometric representatives of characteristic classes. In particular we give a geometric, non-étale analogue of the codimension 1 Godbillon-Vey cyclic cocycle of Connes and Moscovici in terms of path integrals of the curvature form of a Bott connection.

Characteristic forms of complex Cartan geometries II

Abstract:Characteristic class relations in Dolbeault cohomology follow from the existence of a holomorphic Cartan geometry (for example, a holomorphic conformal structure or a holomorphic projective connection). These relations can be calculated directly from the representation theory of the structure group, without selecting any metric or connection or having any knowledge of the Dolbeault cohomology groups of the manifold. This paper improves on its predecessor by allowing noncompact and non-Kähler manifolds and by deriving invariants in cohomology of vector bundles, not just in scalar Dolbeault cohomology, and computing relations involving Chern--Simons invariants in Dolbeault cohomology. For the geometric structures previously considered in its predecessor, this paper gives stronger results and simplifies the computations. It gives the first results on Chern--Simons invariants of Cartan geometries.

Abstract:In this note, we present a topological proof of the generalized Lelong-Poincaré formula. More precisely, when the zero locus of a section has a pure codimension equal to the rank of a holomorphic vector bundle, the top Chern class of the vector bundle corresponds to the cycle class of the schematic zero locus of the section in complex Bott-Chern cohomology.

Abstract:We establish the relative minimal model program with scaling for projective morphisms of quasi-excellent algebraic spaces admitting dualizing complexes, quasi-excellent formal schemes admitting dualizing complexes, semianalytic germs of complex analytic spaces, rigid analytic spaces, Berkovich spaces, and adic spaces locally of weakly finite type over a field, all in equal characteristic zero. To do so, we prove finite generation of relative adjoint rings associated to projective morphisms of such spaces using the strategy of Cascini and Lazić and the generalization of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem to the scheme setting recently established by the second author. To prove these results uniformly, we prove GAGA theorems for Grothendieck duality and dualizing complexes to reduce to the algebraic case. In addition, we apply our methods to establish the relative minimal model program with scaling for spaces of the form above in dimensions $\le 3$ in positive and mixed characteristic, and to show that one can run the relative minimal model program with scaling for complex analytic spaces without shrinking the base at each step.
