Abstract:Here we define natural chaotic systems, like the earths weather and climate system, as chaotic systems which are open to the world so have constantly changing boundary conditions, and measurements of their states are subject to errors. In such systems the chaoticity, amplifying error exponentially fast, is so confounded with the boundary condition fluctuations and the measurement error, that it is impossible to consistently estimate the trajectory of the system much less predict it. Although asymptotic theory exists for estimating the conditional predictive distributions, it is hard to find where this theory has been applied. Here the theory is reviewed, and applied to identifying useful predictive variables for simultaneous multiseason prediction of precipitation with potentially useful updating possible. This is done at two locations, one midocean the other landlocked. The method appears to show promise for fast exploration of variables for multiseason prediction.

Abstract:Turbulence, namely, irregular fluctuations in space and time characterize fluid flows in general and atmospheric flows in particular.The irregular,i.e., nonlinear space-time fluctuations on all scales contribute to the unpredictable nature of both short-term weather and long-term climate.It is of importance to quantify the total pattern of fluctuations for predictability studies. The power spectra of temporal fluctuations are broadband and exhibit inverse power law form with different slopes for different scale ranges. Inverse power-law form for power spectra implies scaling (self similarity) for the scale range over which the slope is constant. Atmospheric flows therefore exhibit multiple scaling or multifractal structure.Standard meteorological theory cannot explain satisfactorily the observed multifractal structure of atmospheric flows.Selfsimilar spatial pattern implies long-range spatial correlations. Atmospheric flows therefore exhibit long-range spatiotemporal correlations, namely,self-organized criticality,signifying order underlying apparent chaos. A recently developed non-deterministic cell dynamical system model for atmospheric flows predicts the observed self-organized criticality as intrinsic to quantumlike mechanics governing flow dynamics.The model predictions are in agreement with continuous periodogram spectral analysis of meteorological data sets.

Abstract:In this brief report we discuss how continuous changes on the physical parameters that determine the weather conditions may lead to long term climate variability. This variability of the weather patterns are a response to continuous random short period weather excitations that are imprinted in the ocean-atmosphere-cryosphere-land system, the Earth System. Given that Earth System is, in the Anthropocene, dominated by the human action, it responds to the intensity and the rate of change of the humankind activities. Thus, we argue, in the context of a specific model of the Earth System, that this rate of change may admit a chaotic-type behaviour.

Abstract:This paper deals with the question of whether uncertainty regarding model structure, especially in climate modeling, exhibits a kind of "chaos." Do small changes in model structure, in other words, lead to large variations in ensemble predictions? More specifically, does model error destroy forecast skill faster than the ordinary or "classical" chaos inherent in the real-world attractor? In some cases, the answer to this question seems to be "yes." But how common is this state of affairs? And are there precise mathematical results that can help us answer this question? We examine some efforts in the literature to answer this last question in the affirmative and find them to be unconvincing.

Abstract:Uncertain quantities are often described through statistical samples. Can samples for numerical weather forecasts be generated dynamically? At a great expense, they can. With statistically constrained perturbations, a cloud of initial states are created and then integrated forward in time. By now, this technique has become ubiquitous in weather and climate research and operations. Ensembles are widely used, with demonstrated value. The atmosphere evolves in a multidimensional phase space. Does a cloud of ensemble solutions encompass the evolution of the real atmosphere? Theoretically, random perturbations in high dimensional spaces have negligible projection on any direction, including the error in the best estimate, therefore consistently degrading it. As the bulk of the perturbation variance lies in the null-space of error, samples in multidimensional space do not contain reality. An evaluation suggests that initial and short-range forecast error and ensemble perturbations are random draws from a high dimensional domain we call the subspace of possible error. Error in any initial condition is a result of stochastic observational and assimilation noise, while perturbations explore other, mostly independent directions from the subspace of possible error that may have resulted from other configurations of stochastic noise. What benefits may arise from the deterministic projection of such noise?

Abstract:Characterization and knowledge of the variability of atmospheric dynamics on a small scale in the city of Riobamba, Ecuador, are achieved through the chaos theory. Meteorological data is taken every hour during four years, including variables such as wind speed, wind direction, incident radiation, temperature, and humidity, from the ESPOCH, SAN JUAN, and QUIMIAG weather stations in the canton of Riobamba. The van Ulden and Hostlang models are used to calculate the Obukhov length, surface heat fluxes, and latent heat flux. The chaos theory is applied to study the variation of atmospheric microdynamics. The Lyapunov coefficients, Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, and Kaplan-Yorke fractal dimension are determined. Before analysis, noise reduction is necessary due to the lack of correlation, especially in the Obukhov length. This research follows a longitudinal design and employs quantitative and explanatory methods based on data analysis, statistical-mathematical techniques, and inductive-deductive approaches. The results indicate a highly variable system, reflected in a high number of Lyapunov coefficients, fractional dimensions, and entropy variations. The microdynamic parameters exhibit hyperchaotic behavior, as indicated by the presence of more than one positive Lyapunov coefficient. The variables also demonstrate a fractional fractal dimension, highlighting the irregularity in the geometric representation of the system.

Supposing that every algebra is either derived tame or derived wild, we get that a degeneration of a derived wild algebra is derived wild too. We also explain why the so-called counter-example of Bruestle is in fact not a counter-example.

Abstract:How close are Galerkin eigenvectors to the best approximation available out of the trial subspace ? Under a variety of conditions the Galerkin method gives an approximate eigenvector that approaches asymptotically the projection of the exact eigenvector onto the trial subspace -- and this occurs more rapidly than the underlying rate of convergence of the approximate eigenvectors. Both orthogonal-Galerkin and Petrov-Galerkin methods are considered here with a special emphasis on nonselfadjoint problems. Consequences for the numerical treatment of elliptic PDEs discretized either with finite element methods or with spectral methods are discussed and an application to Krylov subspace methods for large scale matrix eigenvalue problems is presented. New lower bounds to the $sep$ of a pair of operators are developed as well.

Abstract:Predicting the future state of a turbulent dynamical system such as the atmosphere has been recognized for several decades to be an essentially statistical undertaking. Uncertainties from a variety of sources are magnified by dynamical mechanisms and given sufficient time, compromise any prediction. In the last decade or so this process of uncertainty evolution has been studied using a variety of tools from information theory. These provide both a conceptually general view of the problem as well as a way of probing its non-linearity. Here we review these advances from both a theoretical and practical perspective. Connections with other theoretical areas such as statistical mechanics are emphasized. The importance of obtaining practical results for prediction also guides the development presented.

Abstract:The nonlinear scaling of meteorological processes is an issue of much interest. The objectives of the present work were (a) to investigate cross-correlations between pairs of meteorological time series using different resolutions and (b) to explore the long-range cross-correlations through different scaling exponents. We used 13 years of daily records of rainfall, relative humidity, cloudiness and vapor pressure ranging from January 1st 1996 to December 31st 2009. Data sets were compiled from Veguita agro-meteorological station at Granma province, Cuba. Detrended cross-correlation analysis, multiscale sample entropy, Lévy-stable laws and Hurst–Kolmogorov dynamics were the main methodological and theoretical tools. The detrended cross-correlation coefficient showed significant cross-correlation between rainfall, relative humidity, cloudiness and actual vapor pressure at all investigated time scales. The individual Hurst exponents were in the range 0.62 ≤ H ≤ 0.72 which is consistent with long-range correlated patterns. Bivariate Hurst exponents ( H xy ) were larger than the average exponents of the separate processes ( H x and H y , respectively). The Hurst–Kolmogorov exponents estimated from the climacograms were in the range 0.6 ≤ H ≤ 0.7 (0.603 ≤ β ≤ 0.798) consistent with the values estimated from detrended fluctuation analysis. Each pair of meteorological variables fitted reasonably well bistable distributions with approximately the same Lévy index ( α ≅ 0.736). Hurst–Kolmogorov and infinite variance processes are important drivers of the atmospheric dynamics which can explain the persistence of extreme events (droughts) usually observed in the studied region. The multivariate multiscale sample entropy method and multivariate stable distributions could be valuable candidates for describing daily atmospheric processes.

Abstract:The measurements, recorded as time series (TS), of urban meteorology, including temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), wind speed (WS), and pollutants (PM10, PM2.5, and CO), in three different geographical morphologies (basin, mountain range, and coast) are analyzed through chaos theory. The parameters calculated at TS, including the Lyapunov exponent (λ > 0), the correlation dimension (DC 0), the Hurst exponent (0.5 < H 0), the loss of information ( < 0), and the fractal dimension (D), show that they are chaotic. For the different locations of data recording, CK is constructed, which is a proportion between the sum of the Kolmogorov entropies of urban meteorology and the sum of the Kolmogorov entropies of the pollutants. It is shown that, for the three morphologies studied, the numerical value of the CK quotient is compatible with the values of the exponent α of time t in the expression of anomalous diffusion applied to the diffusive behavior of atmospheric pollutants in basins, mountain ranges, and coasts. Through the Fréchet heavy tail study, it is possible to define, in each morphology, whether urban meteorology or pollutants exert the greatest influence on the diffusion processes.

Abstract:Statistical sampling, as we know it, works for single variables of the atmosphere. In one dimension (left panel), the distribution of reliable samples (blue curve) overlaps with the distribution of best guesses (black curve), and importantly, contains reality (red vertical line). In multidimensional spaces like resolved‐scale atmospheric dynamics (150 dimensions, right panel), sample points uniformly degrade the best estimate, so they do not contain reality. Consistent with theoretical expectations, ensemble members consistently degrade the skill of the unperturbed forecast until medium range. The mean and all other products derived from ensembles suffer an 18‐hour loss in forecast Information. Since Information is a sufficient statistic, any rational user can benefit more from the unperturbed, than from an ensemble of weather forecasts. Furthermore, case‐dependent variations in the distribution or spread of ensembles have no impact on commonly used metrics. Can alternative, statistical applications provide comparable, or even higher‐quality probabilistic and other products, at the fraction of the cost of running an ensemble?

Causal dependencies and Shannon entropy budget -- Analysis of a reduced order atmospheric model

Abstract:The information entropy budget and the rate of information transfer between variables is studied in the context of a nonlinear reduced-order atmospheric model. The key ingredients of the dynamics are present in this model, namely the baroclinic and barotropic instabilities, the instability related to the presence of an orography, the dissipation related to the surface friction, and the large-scale meridional imbalance of energy. For the parameter chosen, the solutions of this system display a chaotic dynamics reminiscent of the large-scale atmospheric dynamics in the extra-tropics. The detailed information entropy budget analysis of this system reveals that the linear rotation terms plays a minor role in the generation of uncertainties as compared to the orography and the surface friction. Additionally, the dominant contribution comes from the nonlinear advection terms, and their decomposition in synergetic (co-variability) and single (impact of each single variable on the target one) components reveals that for some variables the co-variability dominates the information transfer. The estimation of the rate of information transfer based on time series is also discussed, and an extension of the Liang's approach to nonlinear observables, is proposed.

Abstract:The rapidly shrinking Arctic sea ice is changing weather patterns and disrupting the balance of nature. Dynamics of Arctic weather variability (WV) plays a crucial role in weather forecasting and is closely related to extreme weather events. Yet, assessing and quantifying the WV for both local Arctic regions and its planetary impacts under anthropogenic climate change is still unknown. Here, we develop a complexity-based approach to systematically evaluate and analyze the dynamic behaviour of WV. We reveal that the WV within and around the Arctic is statistically correlated to the Arctic Oscillation at the intraseasonal time scale. We further find that the variability of the daily Arctic sea ice is increasing due to its dramatic decline under a warming climate. Unstable Arctic weather conditions can disturb regional weather patterns through atmospheric teleconnection pathways, resulting in higher risk to human activities and greater weather forecast uncertainty. A multivariate climate network analysis reveals the existence of such teleconnections and implies a positive feedback loop between the Arctic and global weather instabilities. This enhances the mechanistic understanding of the influence of Arctic amplification on mid-latitude severe weather. Our framework provides a fresh perspective on the linkage of complexity science, WV and the Arctic.

Abstract:To quantitatively discover the chaotic dynamic characteristics of time series of the flood and drought areas of China, according to the 61 years of affected area statistical data of the flood and drought, the correlation dimensions of the time series of the flood and drought areas are calculated in the reconfiguration space method. The correlation dimension can be used as valuable index to reflect the disaster characteristics. By the calculation, the correlation dimensions of time series of the flood and drought areas are 0.517 and 0.484 respectively, which shows that droughts are more complex than the floods in China. The results can be applied to further study of the floods and drought features and the prediction of floods and drought of China.

Abstract:Natural complex fluid flow systems exhibit turbulent and chaotic behavior that determines their high-level complexity. Chaos has an accurate mathematical definition, while turbulence is a property of fluid flow without an accurate mathematical definition. Using the Kolmogorov complexity (KC) and its derivatives (KC spectrum and its highest value), permutation entropy (PE), and Lyapunov exponent (LE), we considered how chaos and turbulence affect the predictability of natural complex fluid flow systems. This paper applied KC, Kolmogorov complexity spectrum, PE, and LE measures to investigate the turbulent and chaotic behaviors of the monthly streamflow of rivers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United States, and the Mendoza Basin (Argentina) and evaluated their time horizons using the Lyapunov time (LT). Based on the measures applied for river streamflow, we derived four modes of the interrelationship between turbulence and chaos. Finally, using those modes, we clustered rivers with similar time horizons representing their predictability. In summary, the calculated quantities of the measures were in the following intervals: (i) KC (0.484, 0.992), (ii) PE (0.632, 0.866), (iii) LE (0.108, 0.278), and (iv) LT (3.4, 9.3 months).

Limits to extreme event forecasting in chaotic systems

Abstract:Predicting extreme events in chaotic systems, characterized by rare but intensely fluctuating properties, is of great importance due to their impact on the performance and reliability of a wide range of systems. Some examples include weather forecasting, traffic management, power grid operations, and financial market analysis, to name a few. Methods of increasing sophistication have been developed to forecast events in these systems. However, the boundaries that define the maximum accuracy of forecasting tools are still largely unexplored from a theoretical standpoint. Here, we address the question: What is the minimum possible error in the prediction of extreme events in complex, chaotic systems? We derive the minimum probability of error in extreme event forecasting along with its information-theoretic lower and upper bounds. These bounds are universal for a given problem, in that they hold regardless of the modeling approach for extreme event prediction: from traditional linear regressions to sophisticated neural network models. The limits in predictability are obtained from the cost-sensitive Fano's and Hellman's inequalities using the Rényi entropy. The results are also connected to Takens' embedding theorem using the information can't hurt inequality. Finally, the probability of error for a forecasting model is decomposed into three sources: uncertainty in the initial conditions, hidden variables, and suboptimal modeling assumptions. The latter allows us to assess whether prediction models are operating near their maximum theoretical performance or if further improvements are possible. The bounds are applied to the prediction of extreme events in the Rössler system and the Kolmogorov flow.
