Abstract:Rayleigh Bénard(RB) convective system is simulated numerically using Direct Simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method which origins from micro-molecular dynamics.On the basis of DSMC simulation results,the critical Rayleigh number is obtained,which is consistent with the linear stability theory.The double periods bifurcate route to chaos in RB system is obtained by spectrum analysis of temperature signal on the center point of RB system;At the same time,the nonlinear characteristics such as conjunction dimensionality and Lyapunov index are obtained by modern chaotic analysis method.

Abstract:Being contrast to existing methods for parameter estimation with linear tools that emphasize the stability, equilibrium, order, certainty and homogeneous, a nonlinear point of view is proposed with characteristics of unstability, non-equilibrium, disorder, uncertainty and inhomogeneous. The realization of chaos systems is discussed. The chaos method of parameter estimation is introduced. The simulation results for two-dimensional and three-dimensional systems are given respectively.
Chaotic Phenomenon in Residual Series Prediction of Hourly Water Consumption and Its Forecasting

Abstract:Using chaotic identification theory based on Lyapunov exponent, the existence of chaos and its maximum forecasting scale in series of prediction residual of urban hourly water consumption was discussed. To go around the problem where the hourly water consumption series used in the prediction model is short, and the difficulty existing in adopting classical Wolfs method to calculate the Lyapunov exponent, the advanced Rosenstein short-series method was introduced. The calculating results indicate that besides the common seasonality, trend and randomness, a more obvious chaotic component also exists in the observation series of hourly water consumption; in view of which, a composite forecasting model for hourly water consumption based on chaotic prediction and modification of prediction residual was proposed. Examples show that the introduction of forecasting method of chaotic model is helpful for improving the precision of forecasting urban hourly water consumption.

Abstract:A comprehensive analysis on the chaos of a high-dimensional wind power system is performed in this study. A high-dimensional wind power system is more complex than most power systems. An 11-dimensional wind power system proposed by Huang, which has not been analyzed in previous studies, is investigated. When the systems are affected by external disturbances including single parameter and periodic disturbance, or its parameters changed, chaotic dynamics of the wind power system is analyzed and chaotic parameters ranges are obtained. Chaos existence is confirmed by calculation and analysis of all state variables' Lyapunov exponents and the state variable sequence diagram. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations show that the wind power system chaos will occur when parameter variations and external disturbances change to a certain degree.

Abstract:In this paper, the attractors of turbulent flows in phase space are reconstructed by the time delay technique using observed data of atmospheric boundary-layer turbulence, which include high resolution temperature, humidity andthree-dimensional wind speed measurements in Gansu province and Beijing, China. The correlation dimensions and largest Lyapunov exponents have been computed. The results indicate that all the largest Lyapunov exponents in different conditions of time, site and atmospheric stability are greater than zero. This means that the atmospheric boundary-layer turbulence system is really chaotic and has appropriate low-dimensional strange attractors whose dimension numbers range from 3 to 7 and vary with different variables (dynamical variables or non-dynamical variables) and atmospheric stability. Turbulent kinetic energy is first applied to reconstruct the attractor of turbulence, and is found to be feasible.

Abstract:According to the catastrophe of instability of slope,the strange point catastrophe model of the slope system is set up by using the chaotic theory and it is forecast whether the system is chaos by using some methods such as pointcare reflection method,lyapunov exponent method and fractal dimension method,etc..From the study,there is a complex non-linear chaotic relationship between changes,as the non-linear disturbance factors of the slope system,and the response of slope stability.The changes include the changes of exterior conditions,the changes of the stiffness ratio,the inflexion between the stiffness of elastic region and that of strain softening region on the constitutive curve of the medium in the soft stratum layer,and the changes of amount of precipitation.The conditions of the non-linear phenomenon of catastrophe and chaos are the displaying of sudden factors and accumulated factors for the contigent landslip.It is helpful to recognize the catastrophe mechanism of sudden-landslip,the evolutionary mechanism of catastrophe accumulation and then to forecast,prevent and cure the landslip.

Abstract:Atmospheric turbulence, recognized as a quintessential space–time chaotic system, can be characterized by its fractal properties. The characteristics of the time series of multiple orders of fractal dimensions, together with their relationships with stability parameters, are examined using the data from an observational station in Horqin Sandy Land to explore how the diurnal variation, synoptic process, and stratification conditions can affect the fractal characteristics. The findings reveal that different stratification conditions can disrupt the quasi-three-dimensional state of atmospheric turbulence in different manners within different scales of motion. Two aspects of practical applications of fractal dimensions are explored. Firstly, fractal properties can be employed to refine similarity relationships, thereby offering prospects for revealing more information and expanding the scope of application of similarity theories. Secondly, utilizing different orders of fractal dimensions, a systematic algorithm is developed. This algorithm distinguishes and eliminates non-turbulent motions from observational data, which are shown to exhibit slow-changing features and result in a universal overestimation of turbulent fluxes. This overestimation correlates positively with the boundary frequency between turbulent and non-turbulent motions. The evaluation of these two aspects of applications confirms that fractal properties hold promise for practical studies on atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract:By using the result of the time-fractional diffusion equation that presents a self-similar non-Markovian stochastic process, in this paper, we proposed our views on the relationship between weather and climate on the basis of the observational data from Beijing and Jinan: weather can be interpreted as the white noise, and the fractional derivative of order q of climate(0 <= q <= 1) is weather; furthermore, after studying the climatic discrete models and making correlation analysis of time series, we point out that a climate time series has a better memory and its probability density function has a longer tail with respect to the weather.

Abstract:Atmospheric flows, an example of turbulent fluid flows, exhibit fractal fluctuations of all space-time scales ranging from turbulence scale of mm-sec to climate scales of thousands of kilometers–years and may be visualized as a nested continuum of weather cycles or periodicities, the smaller cycles existing as intrinsic fine structure of the larger cycles. The power spectra of fractal fluctuations exhibit inverse power law form signifying long-range correlations identified as self-organized criticality and are ubiquitous to dynamical systems in nature and is manifested as sensitive dependence on initial condition or 'deterministic chaos' in finite precision computer realizations of nonlinear mathematical models of real world dynamical systems such as atmospheric flows. Though the self-similar nature of atmospheric flows have been widely documented and discussed during the last three to four decades, the exact physical mechanism is not yet identified. There now exists an urgent need to develop and incorporate basic physical concepts of nonlinear dynamics and chaos into classical meteorological theory for more realistic simulation and prediction of weather and climate. A review of nonlinear dynamics and chaos in meteorology and atmospheric physics is summarized in this paper.

Abstract:The correlation dimension and K2-entropy are estimated from meteorological time- series. The results lead us to claim that seasonal variability of weather is under influence of low dimensional dynamics, whereas changes of weather from day to day are governed by high dimensional system(s). Error-doubling time of this system is less than 3 days. We suggest that the outstanding feature of the weather dynamics is deterministic chaos.

Abstract:Stability and reliability are two critical aspects in the qualitative analysis of dynamic systems. In this paper, a data-driven dimensional analysis methodology is proposed to analyze the stability and reliability of nonlinear stochastic dynamical systems. The analytical solutions for the largest Lyapunov exponent and the conditional reliability function with minimal arguments are identified. Beginning with random state data, it first discovers the unique and relevant set of dimensionless groups through the Buckingham Pi theorem and sensitivity analysis. The expressions for the quantities of interest (the largest Lyapunov exponent for stability analysis, and the conditional reliability function for reliability assessment) are determined using Gaussian process regression. Subsequently, the dimensionality of these expressions is reduced based on the relative importance of the dimensionless parameter cluster within the unique dimensionless set. The effectiveness and accuracy of this data-driven method for analyzing stochastic stability and reliability are illustrated by two representative numerical examples, i.e., a 2-DOF nonlinear system subjected to purely parametrical Gaussian white noises, and a 2-DOF system subjected to both parametrical and external noises, respectively. Furthermore, the extensionality of the analytical expressions is also validated. The data-driven dimensional analysis methodology specified here overcomes the limitations of classical dimensional analysis and offers more accurate expressions with fewer arguments compared to other data-driven methods found in the existing literature.

Abstract:The localized features on chaotic attractor in phase space and predictability are investigated in thepresent study.It will be suggested that the localized features in phase space have to be considered indetermining the predictability.The notions of the local instability including the finite-time and local-time instabilities which determine the growth rate of error are introduced,and the calculation methodsare discussed in detail.The results from the calculation of the 3-component Lorenz model show thatsuch instability,correspondingly the growth rate of error,varies dramatically as the trajectoriesevolve on the chaotic attractor.The region in which the growth rate of error is small is localizedconsiderably,and is separable from the region in which the growth rate is large.The localpredictability is of important interest.It is also suggested that such localized features may be the maincause for a great deal of case-to-case variability of the predictive skill in the operational forecasts.

Abstract:Power load is significant for the power system load forecasting, system planning, and so on. Because of its subject to weather, climate and the impact of social systems, it shows complex nonlinear characteristics. Especially when the electricity market is established, its nonlinear dynamics is also guided by the market mechanism. Facing to this, a study is done based on the load data of a certain node in Zhejiang Province grid, extracted its Hurst exponent and the box dimension, calculated the maximum Lyapunov exponent and the K entropy. It proves the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of power load under electricity market, and reconstructs its phase space.

Abstract:A novel three-dimensional chaotic system is proposed in this paper. The nonlinear features are enhanced by adding e-exponent function to make the system behavior more complex and diverse. Through calculation and experimental verification, it is found that the system is a conservative system without equilibrium point, and this kind of system may produce hidden dynamic behavior. Therefore, four different dynamic analysis tools are chosen to simulate the possible hidden dynamics. The rotation factor is used to create some new models on the original system equation. With constantly adjustments of the rotation angle, the different resulting rotational hidden attractors are used to further prove that such chaos exists in the new proposed system. In the end, the realization of DSP shows the feasibility of this system in practical applications.

Abstract:Chaos generation depends on nonlinear elements and nonlinear terms in systems of ordinary differential equations. The design and investigation of simple autonomous hyperchaotic systems are of great significance in theoretical interest. This paper presents a novel four-dimensional dissipative hyperchaotic system with only two nonlinear terms. The complex dynamical behaviors of the system are demonstrated with phase portraits, Lyapunov exponents spectrum, bifurcation diagram, Poincaré map and Kaplan–Yorke dimension. Again, the numerical simulation results indicate that the polarity of chaotic signals is transformed flexibly by the offset boosting. Particularly, a symmetric periodic bursting oscillation and bifurcation mechanism are revealed. The bifurcation conditions of periodic bursting are studied in detail by constructing the fold and Hopf bifurcation set of fast-scale systems. The proposed system exhibits symmetric periodic fold/Hopf bursting oscillations with the change of parameters. Finally, hardware experiments verify the theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of the periodic bursting. Its potential value in engineering applications is further demonstrated.

Abstract:Large-scale weather systems affect or determine the generation, development and movement of small- and medium-scale convective weather systems, and the understanding of their influence mechanism is of great significance for the prediction and forecasting of small- and medium-scale convective systems. From the perspective of dynamics, based on the Lorenz–Stenflo model describing convective systems and the Lorenz84 model describing low-order atmospheric circulation, we construct a chaotic model of an atmospheric convective system considering large-scale circulation, analyze the influence of the system parameters on the convective system, and design a state feedback controller to adjust the convective motion. For the constructed convective weather system model, the existence and boundedness of its solution are analyzed, the Hamiltonian quantity is solved, the dynamic characteristics of the Lyapunov index, bifurcation diagram, attractor phase diagram and other methods are used to analyze its dynamic characteristics, the physical significance of its dynamic behavior is discussed, and the influence mechanism of the system parameters on convective weather is given. Additionally, the temperature difference between the upper and lower air currents is changed by the state feedback method, which provides a feasible scheme for adjusting the intensity of convective motion. The simulation experiments show that the chaotic model can explain and reveal the complex dynamic behavior of large-scale weather circulation in small- and medium-scale convective systems, which is of great significance for improving the prediction accuracy of convective systems in local areas, and feedback control can obtain the desired convective motion state.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to judge the chaotic characteristics of time series by using phase space reconstruction and Lyapunov exponents. We discuss the method of the false neighboring and the auto-relativity function for determining the time delay parameter and minimum embedding dimension of the reconstructed time series phase space. Further more, we also put forward a method for calculating the Lyapunov exponents. In the last, a case study on judging the chaotic characteristics with the logarithm yield of the Shanghai Stock Market is performed.

Abstract:Chaos is associated with stochasticity, complex, irregular motion, etc. It has some peculiar properties such as ergodicity, highly initial value sensitivity, non-periodicity and long-term unpredictability. These pseudo random features lead chaotic systems to enormous applications such as random number generator, image encryption and secure communication. In general, the concept of chaos is never associated with similarity. However, we found the chaotic systems belonging to one chaos family (OCF) have similar dynamic behavior, which is a novel characteristic of chaos. In this work, three classical chaotic system family are studied, which are Lorenz family, Chua family and hyperbolic sine family. These systems contain different derived chaotic systems (Lorenz system, Chen system and L\"u system), different order chaotic systems (Chua family and hyperbolic sine family), and different kinds of chaotic systems (chaos and hyper-chaos). Their PSPs demonstrate that there exist strong correlation in OCF. Moreover, we found that high order/dimensional chaotic systems will inherit all dynamic behavior of lower ones, and the similarity will decrease as the order/dimensional goes higher, which is analogous to genetic process in biology. All of these features are quantitatively evaluated by PPMCC and SSIM.

Abstract:The initial value problem weather prediction is a classical deterministic problem in classical physics,there are a lot of difficulties in the method of initial value problem to predict long range weather and short range climate.Three characteristics of atmospheric motion are very important:nonlinearity,being forced and dissipation. It is necessary to combine the dynamical and statistical methods.The prediction problem could be looked as the inverse problem of the initial value problem,i.e. an evolution problem,so the multiple time data in the past could be used to modify initial values and/or numerical prediction model.The inverse problems are divided into there kinds,there are corresponding solutions. After the inverse problem of the initial value problem is introduced,the global analysis to the atmospheric dynamical equations(ADE) are reviewed. The global analysis is another method of climate research different from the simple initial value problem. The global analysis is also called global asymptotic analysis.It is used to study the long range behavior of deterministic systems.It is unnecessary to solve the equations,the properties of ADE are researched by means of studying the equations themselves.With the aid of the direct geometric pictures(the concept of phase space is introduced),the qualitative global analysis to the limit solution set of ADE could be done.It is proved that ADE is a special operator equation in Hilbert Space.The properties of operators must be maintained when ADE is simplified or discretized.It is revealed that the nonlinear adaptation process of a system to external source,so the system could be described by a small number of degrees of freedom sustaining attractors because of dissipative process.Cell to cell mapping is a powerful tool to study nonlinear systems,by use of the concept and method of cell to cell mapping,the global analysis to the general characteristics of numerical model of atmospheric system could be done.The global analysis to round off errors and observational errors could be done.With the aid of the language of probability theory,the statistical description of the characteristics could be given.It is revealed that the indeterminacy of individual state and the determinacy of global state.The restrict mathematical definition of the vague concept of “CLIMATE”is:climate could be defined as probability distribution function of state variables in chaotic attractors determined by controlling variables,and it is proved that it exists chaotic state in climate system really.The approach of quantitative studies to the predictability of the atmosphere could be given,the predictability is the time before the state of a system arrive the probability distribution of chaotic attractors.
