Abstract:Examining underlying neurostructural correlates of specific cognitive abilities is practically and theoretically complicated by the existence of the positive manifold (all cognitive tests positively correlate): if a brain structure is associated with a cognitive task, how much of this is uniquely related to the cognitive domain, and how much is due to covariance with all other tests across domains (captured by general cognitive functioning, also known as general intelligence, or 'g')? We quantitatively address this question by examining associations between brain structural and diffusion MRI measures (global tissue volumes, white matter hyperintensities, global white matter diffusion fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity, and FreeSurfer processed vertex-wise cortical volumes, smoothed at 20mm fwhm) with g and cognitive domains (processing speed, crystallised ability, memory, visuospatial ability). The cognitive domains were modelled using confirmatory factor analysis to derive both hierarchical and bifactor solutions using 13 cognitive tests in 697 participants from the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 study (mean age 72.5 years; SD = .7). Associations between the extracted cognitive factor scores for each domain and g were computed for each brain measure covarying for age, sex and intracranial volume, and corrected for false discovery rate. There were a range of significant associations between cognitive domains and global MRI brain structural measures (r range .008 to .269, p < .05). Regions implicated by vertex-wise regional cortical volume included a widespread number of medial and lateral areas of the frontal, temporal and parietal lobes. However, at both global and regional level, much of the domain-MRI associations were shared (statistically accounted for by g). Removing g-related variance from cognitive domains attenuated association magnitudes with global brain MRI measures by 27.9-59.7% (M = 46.2%), with only processing speed retaining all significant associations. At the regional cortical level, g appeared to account for the majority (range 22.1-88.4%; M = 52.8% across cognitive domains) of regional domain-specific associations. Crystallised and memory domains had almost no unique cortical correlates, whereas processing speed and visuospatial ability retained limited cortical volumetric associations. The greatest spatial overlaps across cognitive domains (as denoted by g) were present in the medial and lateral temporal, lateral parietal and lateral frontal areas.

Abstract:Understanding the biological basis of cognitive differences between individuals is the goal in human intelligence research. The surface area of the cortex is considered to be a key determinant of human intelligence. Adolescence is a period of development characterized by physiological, emotional, behavioral, and psychosocial changes, which is related to the recombination and optimization of the cerebral cortex, and cognitive ability changes significantly in children and adolescents. This study examined the effects of common genetic and envi-ronmental factors between the surface area of the cerebral cortex and intelligence in typical developing adoles-cents (twins, n = 114, age 12-18 years old). Cortical surface area data were parsed into subregions (i.e., frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal areas) and intelligence into verbal and nonverbal skills. We found a phenotypic correlation between regional surface areas and verbal intelligence. No correlation was observed between regional surface areas and nonverbal intelligence, except for the occipital lobe and the right hemisphere. In the bivariate twin analyses, the differences in phenotypic correlation between regional surface areas and verbal intelligence were not due to unshared environmental effects or measurement error, but to genetic effects. In summary, the cur-rent study has broadened the previous genetic investigations of cognitive ability and cortical surface area.(c) 2023 IBRO. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Investigating cognitive neuroscience theories of human intelligence: A connectome‐based predictive modeling approach

Abstract:Recent evidence in network neuroscience indicates that general intelligence may depend on system‐wide network mechanisms, suggesting that the spatially localized predictions of standard theories may be necessary but not sufficient to account for the neural architecture of intelligence. To investigate this key theoretical issue, we directly compared the predictions of local versus global theories within a connectome‐based predictive modeling framework, demonstrating that general intelligence can be predicted by local functional connectivity profiles but is most accurately explained by global profiles of whole‐brain connectivity. Central to modern neuroscientific theories of human intelligence is the notion that general intelligence depends on a primary brain region or network, engaging spatially localized (rather than global) neural representations. Recent findings in network neuroscience, however, challenge this assumption, providing evidence that general intelligence may depend on system‐wide network mechanisms, suggesting that local representations are necessary but not sufficient to account for the neural architecture of human intelligence. Despite the importance of this key theoretical distinction, prior research has not systematically investigated the role of local versus global neural representations in predicting general intelligence. We conducted a large‐scale connectome‐based predictive modeling study (N = 297), administering resting‐state fMRI and a comprehensive cognitive battery to evaluate the efficacy of modern neuroscientific theories of human intelligence, including spatially localized theories (Lateral Prefrontal Cortex Theory, Parieto‐Frontal Integration Theory, and Multiple Demand Theory) and recent global accounts (Process Overlap Theory and Network Neuroscience Theory). The results of our study demonstrate that general intelligence can be predicted by local functional connectivity profiles but is most robustly explained by global profiles of whole‐brain connectivity. Our findings further suggest that the improved efficacy of global theories is not reducible to a greater strength or number of connections, but instead results from considering both strong and weak connections that provide the basis for intelligence (as predicted by the Network Neuroscience Theory). Our results highlight the importance of considering local neural representations in the context of a global information‐processing architecture, suggesting future directions for theory‐driven research on system‐wide network mechanisms underlying general intelligence.

Abstract:Human brain anatomy is strikingly diverse and highly inheritable: genetic factors may explain up to 80% of its variability. Prior studies have tried to detect genetic variants with a large effect on neuroanatomical diversity, but those currently identified account for <5% of the variance. Here, based on our analyses of neuroimaging and whole-genome genotyping data from 1765 subjects, we show that up to 54% of this heritability is captured by large numbers of single-nucleotide polymorphisms of small-effect spread throughout the genome, especially within genes and close regulatory regions. The genetic bases of neuroanatomical diversity appear to be relatively independent of those of body size (height), but shared with those of verbal intelligence scores. The study of this genomic architecture should help us better understand brain evolution and disease.

Abstract:It is well-established that brain size is associated with intelligence. But the relationship between cortical morphometric measures and intelligence is unclear. Studies have produced conflicting results or no significant relations between intelligence and cortical morphometric measures such as cortical thickness and peri-cortical contrast. This discrepancy may be due to multicollinearity amongst the independent variables in a multivariate regression analysis, or a failure to fully account for the relationship between brain size and intelligence in some other way. Our study shows that neither cortical thickness nor peri-cortical contrast reliably improves IQ prediction accuracy beyond what is achieved with brain volume alone. We show this in multiple datasets, with child data, developmental data, and with adult data; we show this with data acquired either at multiple sites, or at a single site; we show this with data acquired with different MRI scanner manufacturers, or with all data acquired on a single scanner; and we show this with fluid intelligence, full-scale IQ, performance IQ, and verbal IQ. But our point is not really even about IQ; rather we proffer a methodological caveat and potential explanation of the discrepancies in previous results, and which applies broadly.

Abstract:There is a growing interest in neuroscience for how individual-specific structural and functional features of the cortex relate to cognitive traits. This work builds on previous research which, using classical high-dimensional approaches, has proven that the interindividual variability of functional connectivity profiles reflects differences in fluid intelligence. To provide an additional perspective into this relationship, the present study uses a recent framework for investigating cortical organization: functional gradients. This approach places local connectivity profiles within a common low-dimensional space whose axes are functionally interretable dimensions. Specifically, this study uses a data-driven approach focussing on areas where FC variability is highest across individuals to model different facets of intelligence. For one of these loci, in the right ventral-lateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC), we describe an association between fluid intelligence and relative functional distance from sensory and high-cognition systems. Furthermore, the topological properties of this region indicate that with decreasing functional affinity with the latter, its functional connections are more evenly distributed across all networks. Participating in multiple functional networks may reflect a better ability to coordinate sensory and high-order cognitive systems.

Abstract:Abstract A complex curvilinear relationship exists between intelligence and age during the neurodevelopment of cortical thickness. To parse out a more fine-grained relationship between intelligence and cortical thickness and surface area, we used a large-scale data set focusing on a critical transition juncture in neurodevelopment in preadolescence. Cortical thickness was derived from T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance images of a large sample of 9- and 11-year-old children from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. The NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery composite scores, which included fluid, crystallized, and total scores, were used to assess intelligence. Using a double generalized linear model, we assessed the independent association between the mean and dispersion of cortical thickness/surface area and intelligence. Higher intelligence in preadolescents was associated with higher mean cortical thickness in orbitofrontal and primary sensory cortices but with lower thickness in the dorsolateral and medial prefrontal cortex and particularly in the rostral anterior cingulate. The rostral anterior cingulate findings were particularly evident across all subscales of intelligence. Higher intelligence was also associated with greater interindividual similarity in the rostral cingulate. Intelligence during this key transition juncture in preadolescence appears to reflect a dissociation between the cortical development of basic cognitive processes and higher-order executive and motivational processes.

Abstract:Researchers have reached a consensus that intelligence is modulated by both nature and nurture. In particular, following the tradition that can trace back to the dawn of psychology, recent studies on the genetic modulation have poured forth flames with the two newlydeveloped and most exciting techniques in life science: molecular genetics and functional neuroimaging. Here we will review researches that endeavor to locate genes specific to intelligence and characterize their mechanisms from three independent yet slightly mingled approaches: behavior genetics, behavior genomics and imaging genomics. Results have shown that there is a group of genes significantly related to intelligence, which can influence intelligence through various brain areas and cognitive processes. Through the review of the genetic researches on intelligence, we propose that similar approaches can be used to exam the genetic origins of other cognitive abilities, such as perception, attention, personality and even decisionmaking in politics and economics.

Abstract:Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) between (quaternized) poly[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA) and (crosslinked) N-carboxyethylchitosan (CECh) or poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sodium sulfonate) (PAMPSNa) were prepared and characterized in terms of their stability, equilibrium water content, and surface morphology. The evaluation of the behavior of the studied PECs in contact with blood revealed that the (crosslinked) CECh/(quaternized) PDMAEMA complexes had lost the inherent PDMAEMA cytotoxicity but still preserved haemostatic activity. In contrast, the complex formation between (quaternized) PDMAEMA and PAMPSNa allowed the preparation of materials with improved blood compatibility.
Personal Income Performance Correlates with Brain Structural Network Modularity but Not Intelligence Quotient

Abstract:Introduction: This study aims to use diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in conjunction with brain graph techniques to define brain structural connectivity and investigate its association with personal income (PI) in individuals of various ages and intelligence quotients (IQ). Methods: MRI examinations were performed on 55 male subjects (mean age: 40.1 ± 9.4 years). Graph data and metrics were generated, and DTI images were analyzed using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). All subjects underwent the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale for a reliable estimation of the full-scale IQ (FSIQ), which includes verbal comprehension index, perceptual reasoning index, working memory index, and processing speed index. The performance score was defined as the monthly PI normalized by the age of the subject. Results: The analysis of global graph metrics showed that modularity correlated positively with performance score (p = 0.003) and negatively with FSIQ (p = 0.04) and processing speed index (p = 0.005). No significant correlations were found between IQ indices and performance scores. Regional analysis of graph metrics showed modularity differences between right and left networks in sub-cortical (p = 0.001) and frontal (p = 0.044) networks. TBSS analysis showed greater axial and mean diffusivities in the high-performance group in correlation with their modular brain organization. Conclusion: This study showed that PI performance is strongly correlated with a modular organization of brain structural connectivity, which implies short and rapid networks, providing automatic and unconscious brain processing. Additionally, the lack of correlation between performance and IQ suggests a reduced role of academic reasoning skills in performance to the advantage of high uncertainty decision-making networks.
Correlates of intelligence via resting-state functional connectivity of the amygdala in healthy adults

Abstract:<p>Intelligence is a form of advanced cognition that includes reasoning, problem solving, pattern recognition, and establishing relationships among items. The amygdala plays an important role in cognitive processing, but the relationship between amygdalar function and intelligence has rarely been explored directly. Here, we investigated the relationship between resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) of the amygdala and intelligence test performance in a large sample of healthy adults (N = 197). We found that two pairs of RSFCs were significantly increased in the high IQ group compared with that of the general IQ group. One of these RSFCs consisted of the right amygdala and the right superior parietal lobule, whereas the other RSFC consisted of the right amygdala and the left middle cingulum. In addition, we found that the brain regions in which the strength of RSFC significantly correlated with full IQ (FIQ) were mainly distributed in the parietal and limbic lobes. What's more, a further mediation analysis indicated that the functional connectivity of the right amygdala and the right superior parietal lobule significantly mediated the correlation between comprehension and object assembly, whereas the functional connectivity of the right amygdala and the left middle cingulum mediated the association between similarities and digit symbol. These findings suggest that amygdalar RSFC may reflect individual differences in intelligence and mediate specific relationships among different intellectual abilities.</p>

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: There are two inter-related categories of EEG measurement: 1, EEG currents or power and; 2, EEG network properties such as coherence and phase delays. The purpose of this study was to compare the ability of these two different categories of EEG measurement to predict performance on the Weschler Intelligence test (WISC-R).METHODS: Resting eyes closed EEG was recorded from 19 scalp locations with a linked ears reference from 442 subjects aged 5-52 years. The Weschler Intelligence test was administered to the same subjects but not while the EEG was recorded. Subjects were divided into high IQ (> or = 120) and low IQ (< or = 90) groups. EEG variables at P<.05 were entered into a factor analysis and then the single highest loading variable on each factor was entered into a discriminant analysis where groups were high IQ vs. low.Q.RESULTS: Discriminant analysis of high vs. low IQ was 92.81-97.14% accurate. Discriminant scores of intermediate IQ subjects (i.e. 90 < IQ < 120) were intermediate between the high and low IQ groups. Linear regression predictions of IQ significantly correlated with the discriminant scores (r = 0.818-0.825, P < 10(-6)). The ranking of effect size was EEG phase > EEG coherence > EEG amplitude asymmetry > absolute power > relative power and power ratios. The strongest correlations to IQ were short EEG phase delays in the frontal lobes and long phase delays in the posterior cortical regions, reduced coherence and increased absolute power.CONCLUSIONS: The findings are consistent with increased neural efficiency and increased brain complexity as positively related to intelligence, and with frontal lobe synchronization of neural resources as a significant contributing factor to EEG and intelligence correlations.SIGNIFICANCE: Quantitative EEG predictions of intelligence provide medium to strong effect size estimates of cognitive functioning while simultaneously revealing a deeper understanding of the neurophysiological substrates of intelligence.

Abstract:Previous research investigating relations between general intelligence and graph-theoretical properties of the brain's intrinsic functional network has yielded contradictory results. A promising approach to tackle such mixed findings is multi-center analysis. For this study, we analyzed data from four independent data sets (total N > 2000) to identify robust associations amongst samples between g factor scores and global as well as node-specific graph metrics. On the global level, g showed no significant associations with global efficiency or small-world propensity in any sample, but significant positive associations with global clustering coefficient in two samples. On the node-specific level, elastic-net regressions for nodal efficiency and local clustering yielded no brain areas that exhibited consistent associations amongst data sets. Using the areas identified via elastic-net regression in one sample to predict g in other samples was not successful for local clustering and only led to one significant, one-way prediction across data sets for nodal efficiency. Thus, using conventional graph theoretical measures based on resting-state imaging did not result in replicable associations between functional connectivity and general intelligence.

Abstract:Over the last decades, cognitive psychology has come to fair consensus about the ontological structure of human intelligence. However, it remains an open question, whether anatomical properties of the brain support the same ontology. The present study explored the ontological structure derived from neuroanatomical networks associated with performance in 15 cognitive tasks indicating various abilities. Results suggest that the brain-derived (neurometric) ontology is partly consistent with the cognitive performance-derived (psychometric) ontology. However, there are interpretable and complementary differences as well. Moreover, the cortical areas associated with different inferred abilities are segregated, with little or no overlap. Nevertheless, these spatially segregated cortical areas are integrated via denser white matter structural connections as compared with the general brain connectome. The integration of ability-related cortical networks constitutes a neural counterpart to the psychometric construct of general intelligence, while the consistency and differences between psychometric and neurometric ontologies represent crucial pieces of knowledge for theory building, clinical diagnostics and treatment.

Choosing explanation over performance: Insights from machine learning-based prediction of human intelligence from brain connectivity

Abstract:A growing body of research predicts individual cognitive ability levels from brain characteristics including functional brain connectivity. The majority of this research achieves good prediction performance but provides limited insight into neurobiological processes underlying the predicted concepts. The insufficient identification of predictive characteristics may present an important factor critically contributing to this constraint. Here, we encourage to design predictive modelling studies with an emphasis on interpretability to enhance our conceptual understanding of human cognition. As an example, we investigated in a preregistered study which functional brain connections successfully predict general, crystallized, and fluid intelligence in a sample of 806 healthy adults (replication: N = 322). The choice of the predicted intelligence component as well as the task during which connectivity was measured proved crucial for better understanding intelligence at the neural level. Further, intelligence could be predicted not solely from one specific set of brain connections, but from various combinations of connections with system-wide locations. Such partially redundant, system-wide functional characteristics complement intelligence-relevant connectivity of brain regions proposed by established intelligence theories. In sum, our study showcases how future predictive studies on human cognition can enhance explanatory value by prioritizing a systematic evaluation of predictive characteristics over maximizing prediction performance.

Abstract:The idea that intelligence is embedded not only in a single brain network, but instead in a complex, well-optimized system of complementary networks, has led to the development of whole brain network analysis. Using graph theory to analyze resting-state functional MRI data, we investigated the brain graph networks (or brain networks) of high intelligence quotient (HIQ) children. To this end, we computed the "hub disruption index κ," an index sensitive to graph network modifications. We found significant topological differences in the integration and segregation properties of brain networks in HIQ compared to standard IQ children, not only for the whole brain graph, but also for each hemispheric graph, and for the homotopic connectivity. Moreover, two profiles of HIQ children, homogenous and heterogeneous, based on the differences between the two main IQ subscales [verbal comprehension index (VCI) and perceptual reasoning index (PRI)], were compared. Brain network changes were more pronounced in the heterogeneous than in the homogeneous HIQ subgroups. Finally, we found significant correlations between the graph networks' changes and the full-scale IQ (FSIQ), as well as the subscales VCI and PRI. Specifically, the higher the FSIQ the greater was the brain organization modification in the whole brain, the left hemisphere, and the homotopic connectivity. These results shed new light on the relation between functional connectivity topology and high intelligence, as well as on different intelligence profiles.

Association Between Intelligence and Cortical Thickness in Adolescents: Evidence from the ABCD Study

Abstract: The relationship between the intelligence and brain morphology is warmly concerned in cognitive field. General intelligence can be defined as the weighted sum of fluid and crystallized intelligence. Fluid abilities depend on genes and genes expression and less depend on experiences. Thus, these abilities develop rapidly during childhood, usually peaking in adulthood and then decreasing with age. Crystallized abilities, in contrast, more depend on experiences. However, the biological foundation of human intelligence remains to be revealed. In this study, by utilizing the structural brain magnetic resonance imaging from a large sample of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, the largest cohort focusing in brain development and child healthy in the United States, we aim to identify the association between intelligence and cortical thickness in adolescents both from commonality and individuality. We use ABCD data set around 11,000 samples cortical thickness and cognitive scores to analysis their association, both from mean and dispersion aspects. Using double generalized linear model, the mean model results is almost the same as generalized linear model, we found crystallized intelligence are more associated with cortical thickness than fluid intelligence in adolescents around 10 years old. We found the frontal gyri regions thickness are negative with intelligence, which is consistent with previous study.Intelligence appears to be associated with widespread increased mean differences and decreased heterogeneity in cortical thickness. The results seem to support the notion that cognitive function has high heterogeneity. Higher cognitive abilities have lower heterogeneity, and lower cognitive abilities has higher heterogeneity.
Stable Individual Differences from Dynamic Patterns of Function: Brain Network Flexibility Predicts Openness/Intellect and Intelligence

Abstract:Growing understanding of the nature of brain function has led to increased interest in interpreting the properties of large-scale brain networks. Methodological advances in network neuroscience provide means to decompose these networks into smaller functional communities and measure how they reconfigure over time as an index of their dynamic and flexible properties. Recent evidence has identified associations between flexibility and a variety of traits pertaining to complex cognition including creativity and working memory. The present study used measures of dynamic resting-state functional connectivity in data from the Human Connectome Project ( = 994) to test associations with Openness/Intellect and general intelligence, two traits that involve flexible cognition. Using a machine-learning cross-validation approach, we identified reliable associations of intelligence with cohesive flexibility of parcels in large communities across the cortex, and of Openness/Intellect with overall flexibility among parcels in smaller communities. These findings are reasonably consistent with previous theories of the neural correlates of intelligence and Openness/Intellect, and help to expand on previous associations of behavior and dynamic functional connectivity within the context of broader personality dimensions.

Abstract:Intelligence is a socially and scientifically interesting topic because of its prominence in human behavior, yet there is little clarity on how the neuroimaging and neurobiological correlates of intelligence differ between males and females, with most investigations limited to using either mass-univariate techniques or a single neuroimaging modality. Here we employed connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) to predict the intelligence quotient (IQ) scores for 166 males and 160 females separately, using resting-state functional connectivity, grey matter cortical thickness or both. The identified multimodal, IQ-predictive imaging features were then compared between genders. CPM showed high out-of-sample prediction accuracy (r > 0.34), and integrating both functional and structural features further improved prediction accuracy by capturing complementary information (r = 0.45). Male IQ demonstrated higher correlations with cortical thickness in the left inferior parietal lobule, and with functional connectivity in left parahippocampus and default mode network, regions previously implicated in spatial cognition and logical thinking. In contrast, female IQ was more correlated with cortical thickness in the right inferior parietal lobule, and with functional connectivity in putamen and cerebellar networks, regions previously implicated in verbal learning and item memory. Results suggest that the intelligence generation of males and females may rely on opposite cerebral lateralized key brain regions and distinct functional networks consistent with their respective superiority in cognitive domains. Promisingly, understanding the neural basis of gender differences underlying intelligence may potentially lead to optimized personal cognitive developmental programs and facilitate advancements in unbiased educational test design.

Abstract:Despite the recognition that cortical thickness is heritable and correlates with intellectual ability in children and adolescents, the genes contributing to individual differences in these traits remain unknown. We conducted a large-scale association study in 1583 adolescents to identify genes affecting cortical thickness. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; n =54 837) within genes whose expression changed between stages of growth and differentiation of a human neural stem cell line were selected for association analyses with average cortical thickness. We identified a variant, rs7171755, associating with thinner cortex in the left hemisphere ( P =1.12 × 10 − 7 ), particularly in the frontal and temporal lobes. Localized effects of this SNP on cortical thickness differently affected verbal and nonverbal intellectual abilities. The rs7171755 polymorphism acted in cis to affect expression in the human brain of the synaptic cell adhesion glycoprotein-encoding gene NPTN . We also found that cortical thickness and NPTN expression were on average higher in the right hemisphere, suggesting that asymmetric NPTN expression may render the left hemisphere more sensitive to the effects of NPTN mutations, accounting for the lateralized effect of rs7171755 found in our study. Altogether, our findings support a potential role for regional synaptic dysfunctions in forms of intellectual deficits.
