Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations can produce many exotic optical phenomena and are the basis of many novel applications of modern optics, including optical communications systems, optical sensing, and materials research. In recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allows unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. With the spectacular experimental development of nonlinear optics, computational methods and techniques for nonlinear optics have obtained prominent progress. This chapter summarizes the computational methods of free-carrier nonlinearities via the hydrodynamic description in a nonperturbative regime and bound-state electron nonlinearities via the Maxwell-Bloch description in a simplified two-level quantum system. The full-wave consideration of nonlinear dynamics of plasmonics and bound-state electrons reveals key contributions to the emerging nonlinear optical applications and allows the design of high effective nonlinearities in a desired spectral range.

Abstract:By pumping energy into a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate it is possible to generate nonlinear coherent modes representing non-ground-state condensates. A Bose-condensed system of trapped atoms with nonlinear coherent modes is analogous to a finite-level atom considered in optics which can be excited by applying external fields. The excitation of finite-level atoms produces a variety of optical phenomena. In the similar way, the generation of nonlinear coherent modes in a trapped condensate results in many phenomena studied in what is termed atom optics. For example, there occur such effects as interference patterns, interference current, Rabi oscillations, harmonic generation, parametric conversion, Ramsey fringes, mode locking, and a dynamic transition between Rabi and Josephson regimes. The possibility of creating mesoscopic entangled states of trapped atoms and entanglement production by atomic states in optical lattices are studied.

Abstract:Abstract We investigate time-domain optics for atomic quantum matter. Within a matter-wave analog of the thin-lens formalism, we study optical lenses of different shapes and refractive powers to precisely control the dispersion of Bose–Einstein condensates. Anharmonicities of the lensing potential are incorporated in the formalism with a decomposition of the center-of-mass motion and expansion of the atoms, allowing to probe the lensing potential with micrometer resolution. By arranging two lenses in time formed by the potentials of an optical dipole trap and an atom-chip trap, we realize a magneto-optical matter-wave telescope. We employ this hybrid telescope to manipulate the expansion and aspect ratio of the ensembles. The experimental results are compared to numerical simulations that involve Gaussian shaped potentials to accommodate lens shapes beyond the harmonic approximation.

Abstract:The close similarities between nonlinear optics and nonlinear atom optics motivate us to demonstrate the possibility of atom-optical bistability for a trapped Bose–Einstein condensate. Driven by an intense, coherent input matter wave, the trapped Bose–Einstein condensate might display the bistability when the Born–Markov master equation for the condensate mode is used. The atom-optical bistability provides a way to control atom lasers with atom lasers.

Abstract:We study the preparation and manipulation of states involving a small number of interacting particles. By controlling the splitting and fusing of potential wells, we show how to interconvert Mott-insulator-like and trapped BEC-like states. We also discuss the generation of Schrodinger cat states by splitting a microtrap and taking into practical consideration the asymmetry between the resulting wells. These schemes can be used to perform multiparticle interferometry with neutral atoms, where interference effects can be observed only when all the participating particles are measured.
Nonlinear Quantum Optics in an Atomic Cavity

Abstract:The idea of making photons effectively interact has attracted a lot of interest in recent years, for several reasons. Firstly, since photons do not naturally interact with each other, it is of fundamental physical interest to see what kind of medium can mediate interactions between these fundamental and non-interacting particles, and to what extent. Secondly, photonics is a major candidate for future quantum technology, due to the easy manipulation, readout, and transport of photons, which makes them ideal for quantum information processing. Finally, achieving strong and tunable interactions among photons would open up an avenue for exploring the many-body physics of a fluid of light. In this thesis, we will see how a cavity formed of subwavelength lattices of two-level atoms can confine photons to a nonlinear environment for a long time, such that emitted photons have accumulated strong correlations both among their momenta and in their temporal statistics. This speaks of a strong photon-photon interaction within the cavity. The nonlinearity originates in the saturability of individual atoms, and the lattice structure results in a strong and low-loss collective interaction with light. While a single atomic lattice has a largely linear nature, as the effect of individual atoms washes out in the collective response, the confining geometry of the cavity means the photons are exposed to the underlying saturability of the atoms for such a long time that the nonlinearity is revived. We will analyse this system both using a standard input-output formalism, where the nonlinear physics of the system is handled numerically, and a powerful Green's function-based approach that allows for exact analytical results with no additional approximations. This analytical description has the potential to lead to an exact study of the many-body physics of interacting photons in a two-dimensional setting.

Abstract:Two light pulses propagating with ultra-slow group velocities in a coherently prepared atomic gas exhibit dissipation-free nonlinear coupling of an unprecedented strength. This enables a single-photon pulse to coherently control or manipulate the quantum state of the other. Abstract:To facilitate the transition of quantum effects from the controlled laboratory environment to practical real-world applications, there is a pressing need for scalable platforms. One promising strategy involves integrating thermal vapors with nanostructures designed to manipulate atomic interactions. In this tutorial, we aim to gain deeper insights into this by examining the behavior of thermal vapors that are confined within nanocavities or waveguides and exposed to near-resonant light. We explore the interactions between atoms in confined dense thermal vapors. Our investigation reveals deviations from the predictions of continuous electrodynamics models, including density-dependent line shifts and broadening effects. In particular, our results demonstrate that by carefully controlling the saturation of single atoms and the interactions among multiple atoms using nanostructures, along with controlling the geometry of the atomic cloud, it becomes possible to manipulate the effective optical nonlinearity of the entire atomic ensemble. This capability renders the hybrid thermal atom-nanophotonic platform a distinctive and valuable one for manipulating the collective effect and achieving substantial optical nonlinearities.

Abstract:Atom optics demonstrates optical phenomena with coherent matter waves, providing a foundational connection between light and matter. Significant advances in optics have followed the realization of structured light fields hosting complex singularities and topologically non-trivial characteristics. However, analogous studies are still in their infancy in the field of atom optics. Here, we investigate and experimentally create knotted quantum wavefunctions in spinor Bose–Einstein condensates which display non-trivial topologies. In our work we construct coordinated orbital and spin rotations of the atomic wavefunction, engineering a variety of discrete symmetries in the combined spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The structured wavefunctions that we create map to the surface of a torus to form torus knots, Möbius strips, and a twice-linked Solomon's knot. In this paper we demonstrate close connections between the symmetries and underlying topologies of multicomponent atomic systems and of vector optical fields—a realization of topological atom-optics.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light is an important feature of structured electromagnetic fields exhibiting non-uniform spatial distribution. In contrast to a spin angular momentum (SAM) reflecting angular rotation of a polarization vector, OAM is the quantity that expresses the amount of dynamical rotation of a wavefront about an optical axis. In 1992 it was demonstrated that such rotation can be transferred to the microscale objects, initiating a novel research direction related to the OAM-light-matter interaction and opening the pathways for new technologies widely applied in physics, chemistry and biology. This review surveys recent progress in the field of interaction between singular optical radiation and matter covering such rapidly evolving application areas as laser material processing, optical tweezers, control of chirality of matter, and OAM-empowered linear and nonlinear effects - Raman scattering as well as Doppler, Faraday and Hall effects. OAM transfer at the atomic scale is also highlighted revealing the remarkable opportunities to modify the physics of ultrahigh-intense laser-plasma interaction. Finally, the so-called spatiotemporal optical vortices, optical vortices with phase and energy circulation in a spatiotemporal plane with a controllable purely transverse OAM, were discussed in terms of their great potential for new applications that would otherwise be impossible.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics investigates the light-matter interactions in media, in which the dielectric polarization of the medium responds nonlinearly to the electric and/or magnetic field of the light. Materials with the potential for a large, fast, and broadband nonlinear response have been explored for decades; if realized, these would revolutionize nonlinear optics, leading to low-power, compact, and ultrafast applications. However, the materials now available are limited, either by relatively low nonlinear susceptibilities for ultrafast nonlinear processes or by slow response times attributable to photorefractive effect and thermal nonlinear phenomena. Moreover, growing demand for integration of multiple optoelectronic functionalities on a chip calls for nonlinear materials that are compatible with standard fabrication approaches, such as complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology. Metamaterials have been predicted to enable a plethora of novel light-matter interactions, including magnetic nonlinear response, backward phase-matching, and the nonlinear mirror ( 1 – 3 ). Linear optical properties such as dielectric permittivity, magnetic permeability, and refractive index can be designed to be positive, negative, or even zero by properly tailoring various properties of meta-atoms (the unit cells of metamaterials). Engineering nonlinear properties of metamaterials beyond those available in nature may be feasible by judiciously designing their quantum, geometric, and topological properties ( 4 ).

Abstract:In the presence of matter there is no fundamental limit preventing confinement of visible light even down to atomic scales. Achieving such confinement and the corresponding intensity enhancement inevitably requires simultaneous control over atomic-scale details of material structures and over the optical modes that such structures support. By means of self-assembly we have obtained side-by-side aligned gold nanorod dimers with robust atomically-defined gaps reaching below 0.5 nm. The existence of atomically-confined light fields in these gaps is demonstrated by observing extreme Coulomb splitting of corresponding symmetric and anti-symmetric dimer eigenmodes of more than 800 meV in white-light scattering experiments. Our results open new perspectives for atomically-resolved spectroscopic imaging, deeply nonlinear optics, ultra-sensing, cavity optomechanics as well as for the realization of novel quantum-optical devices.

Nonlinear opto-vibronics in molecular systems

Abstract:We analytically tackle opto-vibronic interactions in molecular systems driven by either classical or quantum light fields. In particular, we examine a simple model of molecules with two relevant electronic levels, characterized by potential landscapes with different positions of minima along the internuclear coordinate and of varying curvatures. Such systems exhibit an electron-vibron interaction, which can be comprised of linear and quadratic terms in the vibrational displacement. By employing a combination of conditional displacement and squeezing operators, we present analytical expressions based on a quantum Langevin equations approach, to describe the emission and absorption spectra of such nonlinear molecular systems. Furthermore, we examine the imprint of the quadratic interactions onto the transmission properties of a cavity-molecule system within the collective strong coupling regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:Non-classical concerns light whose properties cannot be explained by classical electrodynamics and which requires invoking quantum principles to be understood. Its existence is a direct consequence of field quantization; its study is a source of our understanding of many quantum phenomena. Non-classical light also has properties that may be of technological significance. We start this chapter by discussing the definition of non-classical light and basic examples. Then some of the most prominent applications of non-classical light are reviewed. After that, as the principal part of our discourse, we review the most common sources of non-classical light. We will find them surprisingly diverse, including physical systems of various sizes and complexity, ranging from single atoms to optical crystals and to semiconductor lasers. Putting all these dissimilar optical devices in the common perspective we attempt to establish a trend in the field and to foresee the new cross-disciplinary approaches and techniques of generating non-classical light.

Abstract:This article is provides an introduction to the quantum theory of optics in nonlinear dielectric media. We begin with a short summary of the classical theory of nonlinear optics, that is nonlinear optics done with classical fields. We then discuss the canonical formalism for fields and its quantization. This is applied to quantizing the electromagnetic field in free space. The definition of a nonclassical state of the electromagnetic field is presented, and several examples are examined. This is followed by a brief introduction to entanglement in the context of field modes. The next task is the quantization of the electromagnetic field in an inhomogeneous, linear dielectric medium. Before going on to field quantization in nonlinear media, we discuss a number of commonly employed phenomenological models for quantum nonlinear optical processes. We then quantize the field in both nondispersive and dispersive nonlinear media. Flaws in the most commonly used methods of accomplishing this task are pointed out and discussed. Once the quantization has been completed, it is used to study a multimode theory of parametric down conversion and the propagation of quantum solitons.

Abstract:This work explores the possibility of creating and controlling unconventional nonlinearities by periodic driving, in a broad class of systems described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). By means of a parent quantum many-body description, we demonstrate that such driven systems are well captured by an effective NLSE with emergent nonlinearities, which can be finely controlled by tuning the driving sequence. We first consider a general class of two-mode nonlinear systems - relevant to optical Kerr cavities, waveguides and Bose-Einstein condensates - where we find an emergent four-wave mixing nonlinearity, which originates from pair-hopping processes in the parent quantum picture. Tuning this drive-induced nonlinearity is shown to modify the phase-space topology, which can be detected through relative population and phase measurements. We then couple individual (two-mode) dimers in view of designing extended lattice models with unconventional nonlinearities and controllable pair-hopping processes. Following this general dimerization construction, we obtain an effective lattice model with drive-induced interactions, whose ground-state exhibits orbital order, chiral currents and emergent magnetic fluxes through the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. We analyze these intriguing properties both in the weakly-interacting (mean-field) regime, captured by the effective NLSE, and in the strongly-correlated quantum regime. Our general approach opens a route for the engineering of unconventional optical nonlinearities in photonic devices and controllable drive-induced interactions in ultracold quantum matter.
