Abstract:On the evening after Stephen Hawking's funeral in Cambridge on March 31, 2018 a dinner for attendees who had come from far away was hosted by Paul Shellard, the Director of the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology. I was asked me to speak for five minutes on my recollections of Stephen. This article is an slightly edited copy of my speaking text.

Abstract:In lectures at the Newton Institute in June of 1993, Andrew Wiles announced a proof of a large part of the Taniyama-Shimura Conjecture and, as a consequence, Fermat's Last Theorem. This report for nonexperts discusses the mathematics involved in Wiles' lectures, including the necessary background and the mathematical history.

Abstract:It is indeed a great privilege to stand in front of such a distinguished audience as the 2022 ESHET new honorary fellow. Walking up to this room was a humbling experience. I was again asking myself why the Society's Council had decided to shower on me such an honour: at least half a dozen members present in this room are worthier than I to get such an award. The only good reason for such a choice is probably my venerable age.

Abstract:Paul Bishop commenced his life in universities at Macquarie University in the School of Earth Sciences. He graduated with First Class Honours in Physical Geography and then went on to complete a PhD in 1984. When I joined the Department of Geography at University of Sydney in 1985, it was a pleasure to meet Paul. He had an adjoining office with another tutor, Peter Cowell, and it was obvious that they both brought intellectual vigour and enthusiasm to physical geography. Together they had what Peter called self-indulgent fun engaging in philosophical questioning of many topics besides sharing a love for classical music. Sadly Paul recently died (age 72) and the lights that he shone on those he worked with have gone out; but he cannot be forgotten. Our deepest condolences to his partner, Geraldine Perriam.

Abstract:In this obituary, the life and work of Professor James Albert Lock is summarized (if it is possible to summarize a life spanning more than seven decades and work presented in about 200 communications, including 160 refereed papers). The charming, peaceful and friendly personality of "Jim" (as he wished/liked to be called by his relatives, family and friends) is best described by personal recollections from the authors of this obituary. Personalities like Jim's make us still go on believing in the chances of the human species, whatever would be the foolish agitation of the world.

Abstract:This arXiv submission is posted primarily to make available some additional material to what we prepared for the Derek Memorial article published in the Notices of the AMS. We start (with the permission of the AMS) with the text of our submission close to the final published version (which you can get online. After that we include some autobiographical notes that Derek dictated to Louisa Barnsley (whom we thank) during his final illness. Finally some unpublished notes Derek wrote on the history of his seminal monographs with Bratelli. We thank Marion Robinson for permission and encouragement to post these items.

Abstract:Richard W. Eppley (1931–2023), better known as “Dick,” was a tour de force in biological oceanography. Most of his research life was at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (Scripps), where he studied marine phytoplankton and their roles in biogeochemical processes. Over the course of his career, he influenced many people, not only in science but also as exemplar of integrity and fundamental curiosity about the ocean. His formidable contributions to phytoplankton physiology and biological oceanography were appreciatively reviewed shortly after his retirement (Weiler et al., 1990), and with added perspective after his death (Cullen and Eppley, 2024). What follows are tributes from several of his former students, postdocs, and colleagues.

Abstract:It is with the deepest sorrow that we report the death, on August 8th 1996, of Sir Nevill Mott at age 90. Sir Nevill, a distinguished and outstanding physicist whose name is known worldwide for his many contributions to condensed matter physics, was born on September 30th 1905, at a time when wave mechanics was in its infancy. During the golden days of Rutherford at the Cavendish Laboratory Cambridge, he was the first to apply quantum theory to the scattering of charged particles by atoms; his final work was on high-temperature superconductivity. Sir Nevill's research career thus spanned almost 70 years, thereby providing a unique and valuable link with previous generations of physicists.
