Abstract:We report on the analysis of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) Proportional Counter Array (PCA) monitoring observations of the $\gamma$-ray binary system LS I +61 303, covering 35 full cycles of its orbital motion. This constitutes the largest continuous X-ray monitoring dataset analyzed to date for this source. Such an extended analysis allows us to report: a) the discovery of variability in the orbital profiles of the X- ray emission, b) the existence of a few (recent) short flares on top of the overall behavior typical of the source, which, given the PCA field-of-view, may or may not be associated with LS I +61 303, and c) the determination of the orbital periodicity using soft X-ray data alone.

Long term optical variability of two HMXB

Abstract:We discuss the optical light curves of two Be X-ray Binaries, IGR J06074+2205 and SAX J2103.5+4545 recovered from the ATLAS, ZTF and ASAS-SN databases. Both sources show long term optical variability of 620 and 420 days respectively, with color redder when brighter. We suggest that this is due to the precession of the circumstellar disk. Another possibility is the propagation of a density wave in the disk. We remark that only these two sources show a large amplitude, periodic optical variability out of a sample of 16 well studied High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXB) with a Main Sequence primary star.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive analysis of extensively studied black hole X-ray binary Cyg X-1 with the observation of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer all-sky monitor (ASM,1.5—12KeV)from January 1996 to May 2005 and analyze the correlation of Photon Counts rate and hardness ratio HR2(5—12KeV/3—5KeV).At first,we analyze the ASM data on one-day time scale and find:(1)When Cyg X-1 is in soft state,the correlation of Photon Counts rate to HR2 is negative in A-band(1.5—3KeV)and are positive in B-band (3—5KeV) and C-band(5—12KeV).(2)The correlation of Photon Counts rate to HR2 are all negative in A-band(1.5—3KeV),B-band(3—5KeV)and C-band(5—12KeV)in hard state.(3)The correlation of hardness ratio of HR2 to HR1 on one-day time scale are both positive in soft state and hard state.At the same time,we also analysis the spectral variability using the ASM data on"Dwell by Dwell"time scale,and find a‘new'and interesting correlation,that is:(1)The correlation of Photon Counts rate to hardness ratio HR2 are both negative in A-band and B-band,but is positive in C-band during MJD=52600-52760. (2)The correlation of HR2 to HR1 is negative when Cyg X-1 is in hard state.
Very long-term X-ray variations in LMXBs: solar cycle-like variations in the donor?

Abstract:Long-term monitoring of Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs) by the All Sky Monitor on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer now covers ~13 yrs and shows that certain LMXB types display very long-term (~several to tens of years) quasi-periodic modulations. These timescales are much longer than any "super-orbital" periods reported hitherto and likely have a different origin. We suggest here that they are due to long-term variations in the mass-transfer rate from the donor, which are a consequence of solar-like magnetic cycles that lead to orbital period changes (as proposed by Richman, Applegate & Patterson 1994 for similar long-term variations in CVs). Atoll sources display much larger amplitude modulations than Z sources over these timescales, presumably because Z sources are Eddington limited and hence unable to respond as readily as Atoll sources to fluctuations in the mass-transfer rate from the donor.

Abstract:We carry out a dedicated study of 3XMM J181923.7-170616 with an approximate pulsation period of 400 s using the XMM-Newton and Swift observations spanning across nine years. We have refined the period of the source to 407.904(7) s (at epoch MJD 57142) and constrained the 1 sigma upper limit on the period derivative (P) over dot <= 1.1 x 10(-8)s s(-1). The source radiates hard, persistent X-ray emission during the observation epochs, which is best described by an absorbed power-law model (Gamma similar to 0.2-0.8) plus faint Fe lines at 6.4 and 6.7 keV. The X-ray flux revealed a variation within a factor of 2, along with a spectral hardening as the flux increased. The pulse shape is sinusoid-like and the spectral properties of different phases do not present significant variation. The absorption N-H (similar to 1.3 x 10(22) cm(-2)) is similar to the total Galactic hydrogen column density along the direction, indicating that it is a distant source. A search for the counterpart in optical and near-infrared surveys reveals a low-mass K-type giant, while the existence of a Galactic OB supergiant is excluded. A symbiotic X-ray binary (SyXB) is the favored nature of 3XMM. J181923.7-170616 and can essentially explain the low luminosity of 2.78 x 10(34)d(10)(2) erg s(-1), slow pulsation, hard X-ray spectrum, and possible K3 III companion. An alternative explanation of the source is a persistent Be X-ray binary (BeXB) with a companion star no earlier than B3-type.
Sharp Periodic Flares and Long-Term Variability in the High-Mass X-ray Binary XTE J1829-098 from RXTE PCA, Swift BAT and MAXI Observations

Abstract:XTE J1829-098 is a transient X-ray pulsar with a period of ~7.8 s. It is a candidate Be star system, although the evidence for this is not yet definitive. We investigated the twenty-year long X-ray light curve using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array (PCA), Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), and the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). We find that all three light curves are clearly modulated on the ~244 day orbital period previously reported from PCA monitoring observations, with outbursts confined to a narrow phase range. The light curves also show that XTE J1829-098 was in an inactive state between approximately December 2008 and April 2018 and no strong outbursts occurred. Such behavior is typical of Be X-ray binary systems, with the absence of outbursts likely related to the dissipation of the Be star's decretion disk. The mean outburst shapes can be approximated with a triangular profile and, from a joint fit of this to all three light curves, we refine the orbital period to 243.95 +/- 0.04 days. The mean outburst profile does not show any asymmetry and has a total phase duration of 0.140 +/- 0.007. However, the PCA light curve shows that there is considerable cycle-to-cycle variability of the individual outbursts. We compare the properties of XTE J1829-098 with other sources that show short phase-duration outbursts, in particular GS 1843-02 (2S 1845-024) which has a very similar orbital period, but longer pulse period, and whose orbit is known to be highly eccentric.

Detection of Strong Short-Term Variability in NGC 6946 X-1

Abstract:Using two archival XMM-Newton observations, we identify strong X-ray flux variations in NGC 6946 X-1 indicating it is the most variable ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) on mHz time scales known so far. The 1-10 keV lightcurve exhibits variability with a fractional rms amplitude of 60% integrated in the frequency range of 1-100 mHz. The power spectral density of the source shows a flat-topped spectrum that breaks at about 3 mHz with possible quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) near 8.5 mHz. Black hole binaries usually produce strong fast variability in the hard or intermediate state. The energy spectrum of NGC 6946 X-1 is dominated by two components, a 0.18~keV thermal disk and a power law with a photon index of ~2.2, which is consistent with the intermediate state. The characteristic time scales of the X-ray emission suggests that the ULX may contain a black hole with a mass on the order of 10^3.

Correlated optical/X-ray variability in the high-mass X-ray binary SAX J2103.5+4545

Abstract:SAX J2103.5+4545 is the Be/X-ray binary with the shortest orbital period. It shows extended bright and faint X-ray states that last for a few hundred days. The main objective of this work is to investigate the relationship between the X-ray and optical variability and to characterise the spectral and timing properties of the bright and faint states. We have found a correlation between the spectral and temporal parameters that fit the energy and power spectra. Softer energy spectra correspond to softer power spectra. That is to say, when the energy spectrum is soft the power at high frequencies is suppressed. We also present the results of our monitoring of the Halpha line of the optical counterpart since its discovery in 2003. There is a correlation between the strength and shape of the Halpha line, originated in the circumstellar envelope of the massive companion and the X-ray emission from the vicinity of the neutron star. Halpha emission, indicative of an equatorial disc around the B-type star, is detected whenever the source is bright in X-rays. When the disc is absent, the X-ray emission decreases significantly. The long-term variability of SAX J2103.5+4545 is characterised by fast episodes of disc loss and subsequent reformation. The time scales for the loss and reformation of the disc (about 2 years) are the fastest among Be/X-ray binaries.

X-ray Orbital Modulation of Cygnus X-1

Abstract:We have analyzed over 2 years of RXTE/ASM data for Cygnus X-1. We have detected the 5.6-day orbital period in Lomb-Scargle periodograms of both light curves and hardness ratios when Cyg X-1 was in the hard state. This detection was made with improved sensitivity and temporal coverage compared with previous detections by other X-ray missions. The folded light curves and hardness ratios show a broad intensity dip accompanied by spectral hardening centered on superior conjunction of the X-ray source. The dip has a duration of about 27 of the orbital period and depth ranging from 8 intensities in three energy bands. Variability on time scales of hours is often evident within the broad dip in the unfolded data. In contrast, no feature at the orbital period is evident in the periodograms or folded light curves for the soft state. Absorption of X-rays by a stellar wind from the companion star can reproduce the observed X-ray orbital modulations in the hard state. To explain the low orbital modulation in the soft-state data, a reduction of the wind density during the soft state would be required. As an alternative, a partial covering scenario is described which could also account for the lack of the orbital modulation in the soft state.
Rapid X-ray variability of the gamma-ray binary LS I+61 303

Abstract:The gamma-ray binary LS I+61 303 has been widely monitored at different wavelengths since its discovery more than sixty years ago. However, the nature of the compact object and the peculiar behavior of the system are still largely debated. Aimed at investigating the rapid X-ray variability of LS I+61 303, we have analysed all the archival RXTE/PCA data of the source, taken between 1996 and 2011. The timing analysis yields a periodicity of $P\sim 26.6\pm 0.3$ days, which is statistically compatible with several periodicities reported in the literature for LS I+61 303. Using this period, we performed a data phase-resolved analysis to produce a set of phase-bin-averaged energy spectra and power density spectra. These power density spectra are dominated by weak red noise below 0.1 Hz, and show no signal above this frequency. The amplitude of the red noise varies mildly with the phase, and shows a maximum that coincides with a dip of the X-ray flux and a softer photon index. Aside from low-frequency noise, this analysis does not provide any statistically significant periodic or quasi-periodic timing feature in the RXTE/PCA data of LS I+61 303.

Temporal characteristics of the X-ray emission of NGC 7469

Abstract:We present a study of the time variability of NGC 7469, based on a ~30 d RXTE/PCA observation. Variability is seen across the X-ray band, and spectral changes are observed. The softness ratio is correlated with the ultraviolet flux, but appears to show more rapid variability. The RMS variability parameter calculated on ~1d time scales is significantly variable, and sharp increases are seen close to the periods where the spectrum is hardest. Cross correlation of 2-4 keV, 4-10 keV and 10-15 keV light curves show a peak at zero delay, but the CCFs are skewed towards positive lags (i.e. the soft leading the hard) with an apparent time lag of about 0.5d. The power spectral density (PSD) function in the 2-10 keV band shows no clear features - for example periodicities or breaks - but a power law is a rather poor fit, particularly to the high frequency spectrum. The normalized PSD in the soft X-ray band shows a larger amplitude of variability on long time scales but the hard X-ray PSD is flatter, and shows more power on time scales less than about 1d. Our data broadly support the idea that the X-rays are produced by Compton upscattering of lower-energy seed photons, as had been previously concluded. They are difficult to reconcile with models in which the sole source of variability is the seed photons, and more likely suggest a variability process intrinsic to the X-ray corona. Our interpretation for these results is that the low-frequency variability in NGC 7469 does arise via variations in the Compton seed photons, but that the high frequency variability arises from the coronal heating mechanism (truncated)

Swift/BAT and RXTE Observations of the Peculiar X-ray Binary 4U 2206+54 - Disappearance of the 9.6 Day Modulation

Abstract:Observations of the high-mass X-ray binary 4U 2206+54 with the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) do not show modulation at the previously reported period of 9.6 days found from observations made with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) All-Sky Monitor (ASM). Instead, the strongest peak in the power spectrum of the BAT light curve occurs at a period of 19.25 +/- 0.08 days, twice the period found with the RXTE ASM. The maximum of the folded BAT light curve is also delayed compared to the maximum of the folded ASM light curve. The most recent ASM data folded on twice the 9.6 day period show similar morphology to the folded BAT light curve. This suggests that the apparent period doubling is a recent secular change rather than an energy-dependent effect. The 9.6 day period is thus not a permanent strong feature of the light curve. We suggest that the orbital period of 4U 2206+54 may be twice the previously proposed value.

Swift/BAT and RXTE/ASM Observations of the 35-day X-ray Cycle of Hercules X-1

Abstract:Swift/BAT and RXTE/ASM observations have monitored the X-ray binary system Her X-1 for approximately 14.5 years each, and both were monitoring Her X-1 for a period of ~5.5 years. Here we study the 35-day cycle using these observations. Using a cross-correlation method we find the times of peaks of the 35-day cycles for ~150 cycles observed by Swift/BAT and ~150 cycles observed by RXTE/ASM. These cycles include ~60 observed with both instruments. The noise level of the RXTE/ASM measurements is larger than that of Swift/BAT, resulting in larger uncertainty in peak times. The distribution of 35-day cycle lengths can be fit with a Gaussian with mean 34.79 d and $\sigma$ of 1.1 d. The distribution of orbital phases of 35-day cycle peaks is well fit by a uniform distribution, with 76 percent of the cycles, plus a Gaussian distribution peaked at orbital phase ~0.5, with 24 percent of the cycles. We construct the long-term average 35-day lightcurve in the 15-50 keV band from Swift/BAT, and in the 2-12 keV band from RXTE/ASM. The high energy band shows more variability in the Short High state and the low energy band shows more variability in the Main High state. This is consistent with a precessing accretion disk model as cause of the 35-day cycle.

Identification of a 12-17 day timescale in X-ray observations of GRS 1915+105

Abstract:Measurement of the energy emitted from accreting astrophysical systems provides an observational constraint on the plasma processes that may be operating within the disk. Here we examine the continual time variation over the past six years of the total X-ray flux from the microquasar GRS 1915+105. The application of differencing and rescaling techniques to RXTE/ASM data shows that the small amplitude fluctuations scale up to 12-17 days. A 17-day timescale in the X-ray fluctuations corresponds to half the measured binary orbital period of this system (33.5 +/- 1.5 days). While this may be coincidental, it is possible that these two timescales may be linked by, for example, a turbulent cascade in the accretion disk driven by a tidally-induced two-armed spiral shock corotating with the binary system. Temporal scaling is found only in the ever-present small fluctuations, and not in the intermittent larger-amplitude fluctuations. This is consistent with the basic model for this source which consists of a steady, cold outer disk and an unstable inner disk.

X-ray Variability from the Ultraluminous Black Hole Candidate X-ray Binary in the Globular Cluster RZ 2109

Abstract:We present the results of long-term monitoring of the X-ray emission from the ultraluminous X-ray source XMMUJ122939.9+075333 in the extragalactic globular cluster RZ2109. The combination of the high X-ray luminosity, short term X-ray variability, X-ray spectrum, and optical emission suggest that this system is likely an accreting black hole in a globular cluster. To study the long-term behavior of the X-ray emission from this source, we analyze both new and archival Chandra and XMM-Newton observations, covering 16 years from 2000 to 2016. For all of these observations, we fit extracted spectra of RZ2109 with xspec models. The spectra are all dominated by a soft component, which is very soft with typical fit temperatures of T $\simeq$ 0.15 keV. The resulting X-ray fluxes show strong variability on short and long timescales. We also find that the X-ray spectrum often shows no significant change even with luminosity changes as large as a factor of five.

Abstract:Using X-ray data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), we carried out a pulse-timing analysis of the transient X-ray pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545. An outburst was detected by the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) in 1999 October 25 and reached a peak X-ray brightness of 27 mcrab on October 28. Between November 19 and December 27, the RXTE Proportional Counter Array (PCA) carried out pointed observations that provided us with pulse arrival times. These yield an eccentric orbit (e = 0.4 ± 0.2) with an orbital period of 12.68 ± 0.25 days and a light-travel time across the projected semimajor axis of 72 ± 6 s. The pulse period was measured to be 358.62171 ± 0.00088 s, and the spin-up rate was (2.50 ± 0.15) × 10-13 Hz s-1. The ASM data for the 1997 February-September outburst, in which F. Hulleman, J. J. M. in 't Zand, & J. Heise discovered SAX J2103.5+4545 using BeppoSAX, are modulated at timescales close to the orbital period. Folded light curves of the 1997 ASM data and the 1999 PCA data are similar and show that the intensity increases at periastron passages.

Abstract:The high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) SMC X-1 exhibits a superorbital modulation with a dramatically varying period ranging between ~40 d and ~60 d. This research studies the time-frequency properties of the superorbital modulation of SMC X-1 based on the observations made by the All-Sky Monitor (ASM) onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE).We analyzed the entire ASM database collected since 1996. The Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT), developed for non-stationary and nonlinear time series analysis, was adopted to derive the instantaneous superorbital frequency. The resultant Hilbert spectrum is consistent with the dynamic power spectrum while it shows more detailed information in both the time and frequency domains. The RXTE observations manifest that the superorbital modulation period was mostly betweenn ~50 d and ~65 d, whenas it changed to ~45 d around MJD 50,800 and MJD 54,000. Our analysis further indicates that the instantaneous frequency changed in a time scale of hundreds of days between ~MJD 51,500 and ~MJD 53,500. Based on the instantaneous phase defined by HHT, we folded the ASM light curve to derive a superorbital profile, from which an asymmetric feature and a low state with barely any X-ray emissions (lasting for ~0.3 cycles) were observed. We also calculated the correlation between the mean period and the amplitude of the superorbital modulation. The result is similar to the recently discovered relationship between the superorbital cycle length and the mean X-ray flux for Her X-1.
Long-Term X-Ray/UV Variability in ULXs

Abstract:The focus of NASA's Swift telescope has been transients and target-of-opportunity observing, resulting in many observations of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) over the last ~20 years. For the vast majority of these observations, simultaneous data has been obtained using both the X-ray telescope (XRT) and the ultraviolet and optical telescope (UVOT), providing a unique opportunity to study coupled variability between these bands. Using a sample of ~40 ULXs with numerous repeat observations, we extract stacked images to characterise the spatial extent of the UV-Optical emission and extract long-term light curves to search for first-order linear correlations between the UV and X-ray emission. We find that a small subset may show weakly correlated joint variability, while other sources appear to display non-linear relationships between the bands. We discuss these observations in the context of several theoretical models: precession, irradiation of the outer accretion disc and irradiation of the companion star. We conclude that more complicated analysis or higher quality data may be required to accurately constrain the nature of the joint X-ray and UV/optical emission in these sources.

X-Ray Spectral Variability in Cygnus X-1

Abstract:Spectral variability in different energy bands of X-rays from Cyg X-1 in different states is studied with RXTE observations and time domain approaches. In the hard tail of energy spectrum above ∼ 10 keV, average peak aligned shots are softer than the average steady emission and the hardness ratio decreases when the flux increases during a shot for all states. In regard to a soft band lower ∼ 10 keV, the hardness in the soft state varies in an opposite way: it peaks when the flux of the shot peaks. For the hard and transition states, the hardness ratio in respect to a soft band during a shot is in general lower than that of the steady component and a sharp rise is observed at about the shot peak. For the soft state, the correlation coefficient between the intensity and hardness ratio in the hard tail is negative and decreases monotonically as the timescale increases from 0.01 s to 50 s, which is opposite to that in regard to a soft band. For the hard and transition states, the correlation coefficients are in general negative and have a trend of decrease with increasing timescale.

Abstract:NGC 5408 X-1 is a well-studied ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) that has been seen to emit in X-rays persistently above the Eddington limit of a stellar mass black hole for years. In this paper we report on the most extensive X-ray monitoring of a ULX, using more than 4 yr of observations from the Swift satellite. We find that the 115 d periodicity reported by Strohmayer disappeared after only a few cycles, confirming the suspicion of Foster et al. that the periodicity is most likely superorbital and not the orbital period of the system. We also report on a clear dipping behaviour of the source that may be related to a (super)orbital phenomenon. All these features are reminiscent of Galactic X-ray binaries and strengthen their link with ULXs. Deeper observations of a dip could help resolve the ambiguity about the interpretation of the spectral components of ULXs.
