Abstract:Ambipolar diffusion of hydrogen gives an additional upward thrust to metals that diffuse in the atmosphere of Ap stars. Its quantitative effect on the build-up of abundance stratification due to atomic diffusion that produces the observed abundance anomalies in Ap stars has not been evaluated so far. The purpose of this work is to quantify this effect throughout the stratification process of metals inside the atmosphere. We used our code caratmotion to compute the time-dependent atomic diffusion of four metals (Mg, Ca, Si, and Fe) in the atmosphere of a main-sequence star with an effective temperature of $8\,500$\,K, which is a typical temperature of Ap stars. The results, including ambipolar diffusion of H, are compared to results obtained without this process. Our main result is that ambipolar diffusion must be included in any calculation of atomic diffusion in Ap star atmospheres, at least for stars with $T_ eff 10\,000$\,K. We show that this concerns all metals, even those that are well supported by the radiation field, such as Fe. The crucial role of the stellar mass-loss rate is confirmed; it remains a determining parameter that is constrained, but still free in our calculations. We also present 3D calculations of Ca distributions in magnetic atmospheres. Questioning the interest of systematic searches for stationary solutions (which can often only be reached after a long evolutionary process), we note that remarkable behaviour can occur during the transient phases of the stratification build-up.

Abstract:A series of recent theoretical atomic diffusion studies has address the challenging problem of predicting inhomogeneous vertical and horizontal chemical element distributions in the atmospheres of magnetic ApBp stars. Here we critically assess the most sophisticated of such diffusion models - based on a time-dependent treatment of the atomic diffusion in a magnetised stellar atmosphere - by direct comparison with observations as well by testing the widely used surface mapping tools with the spectral line profiles predicted by this theory. We show that the mean abundances of Fe and Cr are grossly underestimated by the time-dependent theoretical diffusion model, with discrepancies reaching a factor of 1000 for Cr. We also demonstrate that Doppler imaging inversion codes, based either on modelling of individual metal lines or line-averaged profiles simulated according to theoretical three-dimensional abundance distribution, are able to reconstruct correct horizontal chemical spot maps despite ignoring the vertical abundance variation. These numerical experiments justify a direct comparison of the empirical two-dimensional Doppler maps with theoretical diffusion calculations. This comparison is generally unfavourable for the current diffusion theory, as very few chemical elements are observed to form overabundance rings in the horizontal field regions as predicted by the theory and there are numerous examples of element accumulations in the vicinity of radial field zones, which cannot be explained by diffusion calculations.
Atomic diffusion and turbulent mixing in solar-like stars: Impact on the fundamental properties of FG-type stars

Abstract:Context. Chemical composition is an important factor that affects stellar evolution. The element abundance on the stellar surface evolves along the lifetime of the star because of transport processes, including atomic diffusion. However, models of stars with masses higher than about 1.2 M ⊙ predict unrealistic variations at the stellar surface. This indicates the need for competing transport processes that are mostly computationally expensive for large grids of stellar models. Aims. The purpose of this study is to implement turbulent mixing in stellar models and assess the possibility of reproducing the effect of radiative accelerations with turbulent mixing for elements like iron in order to make the computation of large grids possible. Methods. We computed stellar models with the Module for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics code and assessed the effects of atomic diffusion (with radiative acceleration) in the presence of turbulent mixing. Starting from a turbulent mixing prescription already calibrated on helium surface abundances of F-type stars as a reference, we parametrised the effect of radiative accelerations on iron with a turbulent diffusion coefficient. Finally, we tested this parametrisation by modelling two F-type stars of the Kepler Legacy sample. Results. We found that, for iron, a parametrisation of turbulent mixing that simulates the effect of radiative acceleration is possible. This leads to an increase in the efficiency of the turbulent mixing to counteract the effect of gravitational settling. This approximation does not affect significantly the surface abundances of the other elements we studied, except for oxygen and calcium. We demonstrate that this parametrisation has a negligible impact on the accuracy of the seismic properties inferred with these models. Moreover, turbulent mixing makes the computation of realistic F-type star models including the effect atomic diffusion possible. This leads to differences of about 10% in the inferred ages compared to results obtained with models that neglect these processes. Conclusions. The inclusion of turbulent mixing and atomic diffusion with radiative accelerations allows a more realistic characterisation of F-type stars. The parametrisation of the effect of radiative acceleration on iron opens the possibility to compute larger grids of stellar models in a reasonable amount of time, which is currently difficult when the different chemical transport mechanisms, especially radiative accelerations, are considered, although this parametrisation cannot simulate the evolution of abundances of all elements (e.g. calcium).

Abstract:Atomic diffusion with radiative levitation is a major transport process to consider to explain abundance anomalies in Am stars. Radiative accelerations vary from one species to another, yielding different abundance anomalies at the stellar surface. Radiative accelerations can be computed using different methods: some evolution codes use an analytical approximation, while others calculate them from monochromatic opacities. We compared the abundance evolutions predicted using these various methods. Our models were computed with the Toulouse-Geneva evolution code, in which both an analytical approximation (the single-valued parameter method) and detailed calculations from Opacity Project (OP) atomic data are implemented for the calculation of radiative accelerations. The time evolutions of the surface abundances were computed using macroscopic transport processes that are able to reproduce observed Am star surface abundances in presence of atomic diffusion, namely an ad hoc turbulent model or a global mass loss. The radiative accelerations obtained with the various methods are globally in agreement for all the models below the helium convective zone, but can be much greater between the bottom of the hydrogen convective zone and that of helium. The time evolutions of the surface abundances mostly agree within the observational error, but the abundance of some elements can exceed this error for the least massive mass-loss model. The gain in computing time from using analytical approximations is significant compared to sequential calculations from monochromatic opacities for the turbulence models and for the least massive wind model; the gain is small otherwise. Test calculations of turbulence models with the tabulated OPAL opacities yield quite similar abundances as OP for most elements but in a much shorter time, so that determining Am star parameters can be done using a two-step method.

Atomic Diffusion and Mixing in Old Stars. III. Analysis of NGC 6397 Stars under New Constraints

Abstract:We have previously reported on chemical abundance trends with evolutionary state in the globular cluster NGC 6397 discovered in analyses of spectra taken with FLAMES at the VLT. Here, we reinvestigate the FLAMES-UVES sample of 18 stars, ranging from just above the turnoff point (TOP) to the red giant branch below the bump. Inspired by new calibrations of the infrared flux method, we adopt a set of hotter temperature scales. Chemical abundances are determined for six elements (Li, Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Fe). Signatures of cluster-internal pollution are identified and corrected for in the analysis of Mg. On the modified temperature scales, evolutionary trends in the abundances of Mg and Fe are found to be significant at the 2{\sigma} and 3{\sigma} levels, respectively. The detailed evolution of abundances for all six elements agrees with theoretical isochrones, calculated with effects of atomic diffusion and a weak to moderately strong efficiency of turbulent mixing. The age of these models is compatible with the external determination from the white dwarf cooling sequence. We find that the abundance analysis cannot be reconciled with the strong turbulent-mixing efficiency inferred elsewhere for halo field stars. A weak mixing efficiency reproduces observations best, indicating a diffusion-corrected primordial lithium abundance of log {\epsilon}(Li) = 2.57 +- 0.10. At 1.2{\sigma}, this value agrees well with WMAP-calibrated Big-Bang nucleosynthesis predictions.

Abundance anomalies in pre-main-sequence stars: Stellar evolution models with mass loss

Abstract:The effects of atomic diffusion on internal and surface abundances of A and F pre-main-sequence stars with mass loss are studied in order to determine at what age the effects materialize, as well as to further understand the processes at play in HAeBe and young ApBp stars. Self-consistent stellar evolution models of 1.5 to 2.8Msun with atomic diffusion (including radiative accelerations) for all species within the OPAL opacity database were computed and compared to observations of HAeBe stars. Atomic diffusion in the presence of weak mass loss can explain the observed abundance anomalies of pre-main-sequence stars, as well as the presence of binary systems with metal rich primaries and chemically normal secondaries such as V380 Ori and HD72106. This is in contrast to turbulence models which do not allow for abundance anomalies to develop on the pre-main-sequence. The age at which anomalies can appear depends on stellar mass. For A and F stars, the effects of atomic diffusion can modify both the internal and surface abundances before the onset of the MS. The appearance of important surface abundance anomalies on the pre-main-sequence does not require mass loss, though the mass loss rate affects their amplitude. Observational tests are suggested to decipher the effects of mass loss from those of turbulent mixing. If abundance anomalies are confirmed in pre-main-sequence stars they would severely limit the role of turbulence in these stars.

3D non-LTE abundance analyses of late-type stars

Abstract:The chemical compositions of stars encode the history of the universe and are thus fundamental for advancing our knowledge of astrophysics and cosmology. However, measurements of elemental abundances ratios, and our interpretations of them, strongly depend on the physical assumptions that dictate the generation of synthetic stellar spectra. Three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic (3D RHD) ``box-in-a-star'' simulations of stellar atmospheres offer a more realistic representation of surface convection occurring in late-type stars compared to traditional one-dimensional (1D) hydrostatic models. As evident from a multitude of observational tests, the coupling of 3D RHD models with line-formation in non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) today provides a solid foundation for abundance analysis for many elements. This review describes the ongoing and transformational work to advance the state-of-the-art and replace 1D LTE spectrum synthesis with its 3D non-LTE counterpart. In summary:

Abstract:When modelling stars with masses larger than 1.2Msun with no observed chemical peculiarity, atomic diffusion is often neglected because, on its own, it causes unrealistic surface abundances compared with those observed. The reality is that atomic diffusion is in competition with other transport processes. The purpose of this study is to quantify the opposite or conjugated effects of atomic diffusion and rotationally induced mixing in stellar models of low mass stars. Our second goal is to estimate the impact of neglecting both rotational mixing and atomic diffusion in stellar parameter inferences for stars with masses larger than 1.3Msun. Using the AIMS code, we infer the masses and ages of a set of representative artificial stars for which models were computed with the CESTAM evolution code, taking into account rotationally induced mixing and atomic diffusion, including radiative accelerations. We show that for masses lower than 1.3Msun, rotation dominates the transport of chemical elements, and strongly reduces the effect of atomic diffusion, with net surface abundance modifications similar to solar ones. At larger mass, atomic diffusion and rotation are competing equally. Above 1.44Msun, atomic diffusion dominates in stellar models with initial rotation smaller than 80km.s-1 producing a chemical peculiarity which is not observed in Kepler-legacy stars. This indicates that a transport process of chemical elements is missing. Importantly, neglecting rotation and atomic diffusion (including radiative accelerations) in the models, when inferring the parameters of F-type stars, may lead to errors of 5%, 2.5% and 25% respectively for stellar masses, radii and ages. Atomic diffusion (including radiative accelerations) and rotational mixing should be taken into account in stellar models in order to determine accurate stellar parameters.
Revision of the Calcium and Scandium Abundances in Am Stars Based on Non-LTE Calculations and Comparison with Diffusion Stellar Evolution Models

Abstract:A homogeneous set of calcium and scandium abundances has been obtained for 54 A-type stars with strong metal lines (Am stars) by taking into account the departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium. A correlation of the Ca and Sc abundances with the effective temperature has been revealed, with the Ca and Sc abundances in stars with a surface gravity growing with increasing faster than in stars with . No correlation of the Ca and Sc abundances with the iron abundance and the stellar rotation velocity has been found. Am stars exhibit, on average, a higher value of [Ca/H] than that of [Sc/H] and . However, for K there is a hint at a systematic difference between stars with and . The iron overabundance is, on average, the same in the range . It is shown that when atomic diffusion is taken into account, evolution computations with the MESA code for stellar masses of 1.5–2.2 give surface abundances that are consistent with the Ca and Fe abundances in Am stars in three open clusters with an age greater than 600 Myr. Additional mechanisms for the separation of chemical elements are required to explain the Am phenomenon in young stars in the Pleiades cluster. Published diffusion models have been tested. The turbulent models of Richer et al. (2000) and Hui-Bon-Hoa et al. (2022) are consistent with the observations of Am stars in open clusters at large values of the free parameter : 1000 for Ca and Fe and 500 for Sc. None of the diffusion models corresponding to the mass and age of the Am star Sirius reproduces the abundances of the elements from He to Ni observed in it. The results obtained are important for a better understanding of the chemical peculiarity mechanisms in Am stars.

The second grid includes atomic diffusion in all the stellar models and calibrated turbulent mixing to avoid unrealistic surface abundances. Comparing the derived results from the two grids, we find that the results for the more massive stars in our sample show greater dispersion in the inferred values of mass, radius, and age due to the absence of atomic diffusion in one of the grids. This can lead to relative uncertainties for individual stars of up to 5 on masses, 2 on radii, and 20 on ages. This work shows that a proper modelling of the microscopic transport processes is crucial for the accurate estimation of their fundamental properties ---not only for G-type stars but also for F-type stars.

Discovery of secular variations in the atmospheric abundances of magnetic Ap stars

Abstract:The stars of the middle main sequence have relatively quiescent outer layers, and unusual chemical abundance patterns may develop in their atmospheres. The presence of chemical peculiarities reveal the action of such subsurface phenomena as gravitational settling and radiatively driven levitation of trace elements, and their competition with mixing processes such as turbulent diffusion. We want to establish whether abundance peculiarities change as stars evolve on the main sequence, and provide observational constraints to diffusion theory. We have performed spectral analysis of 15 magnetic Bp stars that are members of open clusters (and thus have well-known ages), with masses between about 3 and 4 M_sun. For each star, we measured the abundances of He, O, Mg, Si, Ti, Cr, Fe, Pr and Nd. We have discovered the systematic time evolution of trace elements through the main-sequence lifetime of magnetic chemically peculiar stars as their atmospheres cool and evolve toward lower gravity. During the main sequence lifetime, we observe clear and systematic variations in the atmospheric abundances of He, Ti, Cr, Fe, Pr and Nd. For all these elements, except He, the atmospheric abundances decrease with age. The abundances of Fe-peak elements converge toward solar values, while the rare-earth elements converge toward values at least 100 times more abundant than in the Sun. Helium is always underabundant compared to the Sun, evolving from about 1% up to 10% of the solar He abundance. We have attempted to interpret the observed abundance variations in the context of radiatively driven diffusion theory, which appears to provide a framework to understand some, but not all, of the observed anomalous abundance levels and variations.

Atomic diffusion in metal-poor stars: II. Predictions for the Spite plateau

Abstract:We have computed a grid of up-to-date stellar evolutionary models including atomic diffusion, in order to study the evolution with time of the surface Li abundance in low-mass metal-poor stars. We discuss in detail the dependence of the surface Li evolution on the initial metallicity and stellar mass, and compare the abundances obtained from our models with the available Li measurements in Pop II stars. While it is widely accepted that the existence of the Spite Li-plateau for these stars is a strong evidence that diffusion is inhibited, we show that, when taking into account observational errors, uncertainties in the Li abundance determinations, in the effective temperature scale, and in particular the size of the observed samples of stars, the Spite plateau and the Li abundances in subgiant branch stars can be reproduced also by models including fully efficient diffusion, provided that the most metal-poor field halo objects are between 13.5 and 14 Gyr old. We provide the value of the minimum number of plateau stars to observe, for discriminating between efficient or inhibited diffusion. From our models with diffusion we derive that the average Li abundance along the Spite plateau is about a factor of 2 lower than the primordial one. As a consequence, the derived primordial Li abundance is consistent with a high helium and low deuterium Big Bang Nucleosynthesis; this implies a high cosmological baryon density as inferred from the analyses of the cosmic microwave background.

Endotoxins stimulate generation of superoxide radicals and lipid peroxidation in blood platelets.

Abstract:Lipopolysaccharide (LPS, endotoxin) is an important structural constituent of the membrane of gram-negative bacteria with a wide range of biological effects. It can activate blood platelets. The purpose of present study was to determine the direct effect of endotoxins from Proteus mirabilis, differing significantly in their composition, on the generation of superoxide radicals and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in blood platelets. Superoxide radicals were measured by means of superoxide dismutase-inhibitable reduction of cytochrome C. The TBARS determination (malonyldialdehyde) was used as a marker of endogenous arachidonate metabolism and thromboxane A2 synthesis. Results demonstrate that three endotoxins (LPS S1959, LPS R110, LPS R45) after 2 min of action, even at the lowest concentration (0.03 microg/10(8) platelets) stimulated the generation of TBARS and release of superoxide radicals. All LPS contain lipid A as a component but differ in their chemical composition in the polysaccharide part. It is suggested that the observed effects of LPS on blood platelets are attributable to their lipid A portion.
Numerical experiments to help understand cause and effect in massive star evolution

Abstract:The evolution of massive stars is affected by a variety of physical processes including convection, rotation, mass loss and binary interaction. Because these processes modify the internal chemical abundance profiles in multiple ways simultaneously, it can be challenging to determine which properties of the stellar interior are primarily driving the overall evolution. Building on previous work, we develop a new modelling approach called SNAPSHOT that allows us to isolate the key features of the internal abundance profile that drive the evolution of massive stars. Using our approach, we compute numerical stellar structure models in thermal equilibrium covering key phases of stellar evolution. For the main sequence, we demonstrate that models with the same mass and very similar surface properties can have different internal distributions of hydrogen and convective core masses. We discuss why massive stars expand after the main sequence and the fundamental reasons for why they become red, blue or yellow supergiants. For the post-main sequence, we demonstrate that small changes in the abundance profile can cause very large effects on the surface properties. We also discuss the effects that produce blue supergiants and the cause of blue loops. Our models show that massive stars with lower metallicity tend to be more compact due to the combined effect of lower CNO abundances in the burning regions and lower opacity in the envelope.

Revision of calcium and scandium abundances in Am stars based on NLTE calculations and comparison with diffusion stellar evolution models

Abstract:The homogeneous data sets for the calcium and scandium abundances accounting for departures from LTE were obtained for a sample of 54 metallic-line (Am) stars. The Ca and Sc abundances were found to correlate with effective temperature Teff, the abundance growth with increasing Teff being higher in stars with surface gravity log g < 4 than in those with log g > 4. No correlation was found between Ca or Sc abundances and the iron abundance or the velocity of axial rotation. Am stars exhibit on average the higher values of [Ca/H] than those of [Sc/H] as well as the abundance ratio [Ca/Sc] = 0.41 +/- 0.30. However, at Teff > 9500 K there is an allusion to the systematic difference between Am stars with surface gravity log g > 4 and log g < 4. The iron excess is nearly the same in the range 7200 K <= Teff <= 10030 K. Evolution diffusion models computed with the code MESA for stars with masses from 1.5 to 2Msun show the surface abundances that are in good agreement with Ca and Fe abundances observed in Am stars of the three open clusters with the age > 600 Myr. Additional mechanisms of chemical separation should be considered for explanation of the Am phenomenon in young stars of the Pleiades cluster. We tested the published diffusion stellar evolution models. The diffusion models by Richer et al. (2000) and Hui-Bon-Hoa et al. (2022) are shown to agree with observations of Am stars in the open clusters at large values of the free turbulence parameter: omega=1000 for Ca and Fe, omega=500 for Sc. There is no model with the mass and age of the Am-type star Sirius that could reproduce its surface abundances from He to Ni. Isotope Anomalies in the Fe-group Elements in Meteorites and Connection to Nucleosynthesis in AGB Stars

Abstract:We study the effects of neutron captures in AGB stars on \oq Fe-group\cqb elements, with an emphasis on Cr, Fe, and Ni. These elements show anomalies in $^{54}$Cr, $^{58}$Fe, and $^{64}$Ni in solar-system materials, which are commonly attributed to SNe. However, as large fractions of the interstellar medium (ISM) were reprocessed in AGB stars, these elements were reprocessed, too. We calculate the effects of such reprocessing on Cr, Fe, and Ni through 1.5\msb and 3\msb AGB models, adopting solar and 1/3 solar metallicities. All cases produce excesses of $^{54}$Cr, $^{58}$Fe, and $^{64}$Ni, while the other isotopes are little altered; hence, the observations may be explained by AGB processing. The results are robust and not dependent on the detailed initial isotopic composition. Consequences for other \oq Fe group\cqb elements are then explored. They include $^{50}$Ti excesses, and some production of $^{46,47,49}$Ti. In many circumstellar condensates, Ti quantitatively reflects these effects of AGB neutron captures. Scatter in the data results from small variations (granularity) in the isotopic composition of the local ISM. For Si, the main effects are instead due to variations in the local ISM from different SNe sources. The problem of Ca is discussed, particularly with regard to $^{48}$Ca. The measured data are usually represented assuming terrestrial values for $^{42}$Ca/$^{44}$Ca. Materials processed in AGB stars or sources with variable initial $^{42}$Ca/$^{44}$Ca ratios can give apparent $^{48}$Ca excesses/deficiencies, attributed to SNe. The broader issue of Galactic Chemical Evolution is also discussed in view of the isotopic granularity in the ISM. \end{abstract}

Abstract:Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars are significant contributors to the metal enrichment of the interstellar medium. They have strong dust-driven winds that have their origin in regions close to the AGB star's surface, where dense dust clouds form. In this methods paper, we adapted models from advanced radiation-hydrodynamical (RHD) simulations as input for radiative transfer software to create synthetic observables. A major goal is to describe an AGB star's non-sphericity and to simulate its effects on the surrounding dusty envelope. We developed tools in Python to translate models of an AGB star and its dust-driven wind from 3D RHD simulations with into the format used for radiative transfer with . We preserved the asymmetric shape of the AGB star by including the star as a `dust species' and by using temperature data computed in The circumstellar silicate dust from the 3D RHD simulation is included using opacity data in with spatially dependent grain sizes. We compared images and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) created with of a model snapshot with similar output made with a spherically symmetric stellar atmosphere from the 1D program and with a point source star in Our model features substantial and clumpy dust formation just above 3.4\,au from the grid centre ($ 1\,R_ above the star), and large-scale structures due to giant convection cells are visible on the stellar surface. With the properties of VLTI as a basis, we have created simple synthetic observables where the dust clouds close to the star and features on the stellar surface are resolved. The flux density and the contrast to the star are high enough that optical interferometers, such as the VLTI, should be able to detect these dust clouds. We find that it is important to include asymmetric stellar models since their irregular shapes, radiation fields, and their dusty envelopes even put their marks on spatially unresolved observables and affect the flux levels and shapes of the SEDs. The effects on flux levels can mostly be linked to the clumpiness of the circumstellar dust. In contrast, the angle-dependent illumination resulting from temperature variations on the stellar surface causes shifts in the wavelengths of the flux maximum, as shown by replacing the asymmetric star with a spherical one. The methods presented here are an important step towards producing realistic synthetic observables and testing predictions of advanced 3D RHD models. With the model used here, we find that optical interferometers should be able to resolve thermal emission from dense clouds in the dust-formation zone close to an AGB star. Taking the angle-dependence of SEDs as a proxy for temporal variations in unresolved data, we conclude that not all variability observed in AGB stars should be interpreted as global changes in the sense of spherical models.

Abstract:In stellar astrophysics, the study of the atmospheres of early-type stars plays a very special role. The atmospheres of these stars display a variety of different phenomena, such as the presence of large magnetic fields, strong surface convection, pulsation, diffusion of chemical elements. In particular, about 10% of early F-, A- and late B-type stars present chemical peculiarities, which rise as a result of diffusion. A detailed study of the evolution of the chemical peculiarities as traces of diffusion processes requires the precise knowledge of stellar ages and initial chemical composition. Open clusters provide these information: 1) it is possible to assume that all cluster members have approximately the same original chemical composition and age; 2) the age of stars belonging to open clusters can be determined with much higher accuracy than for field stars. For this reason chemically peculiar stars member of open clusters have been targeted to study the evolution of the chemical peculiarities primarily to provide constraints to diffusion models. We review the abundance studies of chemically peculiar stars in open clusters performed until now, putting their results into the broader context of stellar evolution.

Abstract:The recent distance determinations by HIPPARCOS have allowed to locate very precisely a reasonable set of subdwarfs in the HR diagram. A detailed comparison with evolutionary models is now possible and it has been recently claimed that the observed lower part of the main-sequence is cooler than the computed one. In this paper we show that microscopic diffusion could be the physical explanation of such a systematic shift. We emphazise the fact that, as diffusion alters surface abundances, the initial metal content of the stellar material is higher than the present one. A "calibration" procedure is necessary when comparing observed and theoretical HR diagram, to take into account this effect.
