Abstract:In this chapter we review our experimental research on cold atoms and Bose-Einstein condensates, including the properties of the condensate in a tight confinement and across an optical dipole potential, the parametric excitation of cold atoms in a quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration trap, and the precise manipulation of atoms on a microchip. The behavior of BEC in a trap without free-falling is described in detail, and the sudden shrink of the long axis of the atomic cloud in a cigar-shape trap was observed directly when the condensation occurs. The experimental exploration supports the use of the reduction in the effective sample size as evidence for the onset of the condensate in the case that the trap cannot be switched off completely, just like permanent-magnet traps, or if the time-of-flight method is not convenient in a restricted geometry of the traps. The dynamical evolution of a cold atomic cloud and a condensate passing through a far red-detuned Gaussian beam is studied both numerically and experimentally. Several exotic phenomena, such as the focusing and advancement of atomic clouds, were exhibited. It shows that the BEC can be operated in a controllable manner, and it can be used to simulate a wide variety of quantum phenomena which benefit from the wave-like characteristic of the condensate and flexible manipulation of optical potentials. Furthermore, we discuss the parametric excitation of Rb-87 atoms in a quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration trap, and measure the dependence of the temperature and the number of the atomic cloud on modulation frequency of the parametric excitation field. It is found that the contribution of atomic collisions to the energy distributions results in a lower temperature of the atomic cloud than the theoretical prediction. Finally, we review our efforts in realizing the first BEC on an atom chip in China and report a systematic study on precisely controlling the behavior of cold atoms on chips, including magnetic trapping, adiabatically compressing, guiding, dynamically splitting and merging. Surface-induced evaporative cooling and parametric resonance induced by the modulation of the current in chip wires are also described.

Abstract:The achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in ultracold vapors of alkali atoms has given enormous impulse to the theoretical and experimental study of dilute atomic gases in condensed quantum states inside magnetic traps and optical lattices. This article offers a short survey on mathematical models and theories as well as numerical methods for BEC based on the mean field theory. We start with the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) in three dimensions (3D) for modeling one-component BEC of the weakly interacting bosons, scale it to obtain a three-parameter model and show how to reduce it to two dimensions (2D) and one dimension (1D) GPEs in certain limiting regimes. Mathematical theories and numerical methods for ground states and dynamics of BEC are provided. Extensions to GPE with an angular momentum rotation term for a rotating BEC, to GPE with long-range anisotropic dipole-dipole interaction for a dipolar BEC and to coupled GPEs for spin-orbit coupled BECs are discussed. Finally, some conclusions are drawn and future research perspectives are discussed.

Abstract:We study an ultracold Bose gas in an optical dipole trap consisting of one single focused laser beam. An analytical expression for the corresponding density of states beyond the usual harmonic approximation is obtained. We are thus able to discuss the existence of a critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation and find that the phase transition must be enabled by a cutoff near the threshold. Moreover, we study the dynamics of evaporative cooling and observe significant deviations from the findings for the well-established harmonic approximation. Furthermore, we investigate Bose-Einstein condensates in such a trap in Thomas-Fermi approximation and determine analytical expressions for chemical potential, internal energy and Thomas-Fermi radii beyond the usual harmonic approximation.

Abstract:The phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute gases in traps is reviewed from a theoretical perspective. Mean-field theory provides a framework to understand the main features of the condensation and the role of interactions between particles. Various properties of these systems are discussed, including the density profiles and the energy of the ground-state configurations, the collective oscillations and the dynamics of the expansion, the condensate fraction and the thermodynamic functions. The thermodynamic limit exhibits a scaling behavior in the relevant length and energy scales. Despite the dilute nature of the gases, interactions profoundly modify the static as well as the dynamic properties of the system; the predictions of mean-field theory are in excellent agreement with available experimental results. Effects of superfluidity including the existence of quantized vortices and the reduction of the moment of inertia are discussed, as well as the consequences of coherence such as the Josephson effect and interference phenomena. The review also assesses the accuracy and limitations of the mean-field approach.

Abstract:In two-dimensional traps, since the theoretical study of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) will encounter the problem of divergence, the actual contribution of the divergent terms is often estimated in some indirect ways with the accuracy to the leading order. In this paper, by using an analytical continuation method to solve the divergence problem, we obtain the analytical expressions of critical temperature and condensate fraction for Bose gases in a two-dimensional anisotropic box and harmonic trap, respectively. They are consistent with or better than previous studies. Then, we further consider the nonvanishing chemical potential, and obtain the expressions of chemical potential and more precise condensate fraction. These results agree with the numerical calculation well, especially for the case of harmonic traps. The comparison between the grand canonical and canonical ensembles shows that our calculation in the grand canonical ensemble is reliable.

Abstract:A nonequilibrium approach to the dynamics and statistics of the condensate of an ideal N-atom Bose gas cooling via interaction with a thermal reservoir using the canonical ensemble is developed. We derive simple analytical expressions for the canonical partition function and equilibrium distribution of the number of atoms in the ground state of a trap under different approximations, and compare them with exact numerical results. The N-particle constraint associated with the canonical ensemble is usually a burden. In the words of Kittel, "in the investigation of the Bose-Einstein... laws it is very inconvenient to impose the restriction that the number of particles in the subsystem shall be held constant." But in the present approach, based on the analogy between a second-order phase transition and laser threshold behavior, the N-particle constraint makes the problem easier. We emphasize that the present work provides another example of a case in which equilibrium (detailed balance) solutions to nonequilibrium equations of motion provide a useful supplementary approach to conventional statistical mechanics. We also discuss some dynamical and mesoscopic aspects of Bose-Einstein condensation. The conclusion is that the present analytical (but approximate) results, based on a nonequilibrium approach, are in excellent agreement with exact (but numerical) results. The present analysis has much in common with the quantum theory of the laser.

Abstract:We present a pedagogical introduction to Bose–Einstein condensation in traps with spherical symmetry, namely, the spherical box and the thick shell, sometimes called bubble trap. In order to obtain the critical temperature for Bose–Einstein condensation, we describe how to calculate the cumulative state number and density of states in these geometries, using numerical and analytical (semi-classical) approaches. The differences in the results of both methods are a manifestation of Weyl's theorem, i.e., they reveal how the geometry of the trap (boundary condition) affects the number of the eigenstates counted. Using the same calculation procedure, we analyzed the impact of going from three-dimensions to two-dimensions, as we move from a thick shell to a two-dimensional shell. The temperature range we obtained, for the most commonly used atomic species and reasonable confinement volumes, is compatible with current cold atom experiments, which demonstrates that these trapping potentials may be employed in experiments.

Abstract:The recent realization of Bose–Einstein condensation in atomic gases opens new possibilities for the observation of macroscopic quantum phenomena. There are two important features of these systems — weak interaction and significant spatial inhomogeneity. Because of this a non-trivial 'zeroth-order' theory exists, compared to the 'first-order' Bogolubov theory. The zeroth-order theory is based on the mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation for the condensate ψ-function. The equation is classical in its essence but contains the constant explicitly. Phenomena such as collective modes, interference, tunneling, Josephson-like current and quantized vortex lines can be described using this equation. Elementary excitations define the thermodynamic behavior of the system and result in a Landau-type damping of collective modes. Fluctuations of the phase of the condensate wave function restrict the monochromaticity of the Josephson current. Fluctuations of the numbers of quanta result in quantum collapse-revival of the collective oscillations.

Abstract:Ensembles of particles governed by quantum mechanical laws exhibit fascinating emergent behavior. Atomic quantum gases, liquid helium, and electrons in quantum materials all show distinct properties due to their composition and interactions. Quantum degenerate samples of bosonic dipolar molecules promise the realization of novel phases of matter with tunable dipolar interactions and new avenues for quantum simulation and quantum computation. However, rapid losses, even when reduced through collisional shielding techniques, have so far prevented cooling to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). In this work, we report on the realization of a BEC of dipolar molecules. By strongly suppressing two- and three-body losses via enhanced collisional shielding, we evaporatively cool sodium-cesium (NaCs) molecules to quantum degeneracy. The BEC reveals itself via a bimodal distribution and a phase-space-density exceeding one. BECs with a condensate fraction of 60(10) % and a temperature of 6(2) nK are created and found to be stable with a lifetime close to 2 seconds. This work opens the door to the exploration of dipolar quantum matter in regimes that have been inaccessible so far, promising the creation of exotic dipolar droplets, self-organized crystal phases, and dipolar spin liquids in optical lattices.

Abstract:We study the statics and dynamics of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) droplet bound by inter-species contact interaction in a trapped non-dipolar BEC. Our findings are demonstrated in terms of stability plots of a dipolar 164Dy droplet bound in a trapped non-dipolar 87Rb BEC with a variable number of 164Dy atoms and the inter-species scattering length. A trapped non-dipolar BEC of a fixed number of atoms can only bind a dipolar droplet containing atoms less than a critical number for the inter-species scattering length between two critical values. The shape and size (statics) as well as the small breathing oscillation (dynamics) of the dipolar BEC droplet are studied using the numerical and variational solutions of a mean-field model. We also suggest an experimental procedure for achieving such a 164Dy droplet by relaxing the trap on the 164Dy BEC in a trapped binary 87Rb-164Dy mixture.

Abstract:The achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in our experiment is reported. The process of BEC formation is observed bill detecting the image after free expansion, in which the effectiveness of runaway evaporative cooling is shown by measuring the optical density of the atom cloud. About 2 x 10(5) Rb-87 atoms in the \F = 2, m(F) = 2) state are condensed into the condensate. The ratio of axial-to-radial size of the condensate released from the magnetic trap is investigated in theory and experiment.

Stabilization of the number of Bose-Einstein condensed atoms in evaporative cooling via three-body recombination loss

Abstract:The dynamics of evaporative cooling of magnetically trapped $^{87}$Rb atoms is studied on the basis of the quantum kinetic theory of a Bose gas. We carried out the quantitative calculations of the time evolution of conventional evaporative cooling where the frequency of the radio-frequency magnetic field is swept exponentially. This "exponential-sweep cooling" is known to become inefficient at the final stage of the cooling process due to a serious three-body recombination loss. We precisely examine how the growth of a Bose-Einstein condensate depends on the experimental parameters of evaporative cooling, such as the initial number of trapped atoms, the initial temperature, and the bias field of a magnetic trap. It is shown that three-body recombination drastically depletes the trapped $^{87}$Rb atoms as the system approaches the quantum degenerate region and the number of condensed atoms finally becomes insensitive to these experimental parameters. This result indicates that the final number of condensed atoms is well stabilized by a large nonlinear three-body loss against the fluctuations of experimental conditions in evaporative cooling.

Abstract:The stability of trapped bosons with repulsive interaction is studied using an approximate many-body calculation. Instead of using the traditional harmonic trapping potential we consider an anharmonic potential of the form . In our method, a correlated two-body basis function is used which considers all two-body correlations. It is explained that negative value of anharmonic parameter ( ) are capable to change a stable condensate into a metastable one. Within this metastable condensate, we slowly increase the number of atom ( A ) and find a collapsing nature of repulsive condensate. The process of collapse of repulsive Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) is completely different from the collapsing process of attractive BEC and it is explained in details. A dramatic behaviour of interaction energy, kinetic energy, trapping potential energy along with the total ground state energy of this metastable repulsive BEC is observed. We also study the instability of these zero point energies by varying when fixed number of bosons are trapped by the anharmonic well and find critical values of at which the system collapses. When the number of trapped particle is sufficiently high, a close interplay between number of particle and anharmonic strength is observed to remodel the shape of the effective metastable region.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of an ion moving through a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) after an initial momentum is imparted. For this, we derive a master equation in the weak-coupling limit and Lamb-Dicke approximation for the reduced density matrix of the ion. We study the time evolution of the ion's kinetic energy and observe that its expectation value, identified as the ion temperature $T_\mathrm{ion}$, is reduced by several orders of magnitude in a time on the order of microseconds for a condensate density in the experimentally relevant range between $10^{13}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ and $10^{14}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-3}$. We characterize this behavior by defining the duration at half maximum as the time required by $T_\mathrm{ion}$ to reach half of its initial value, and study its dependence on the system parameters. Similarly, we find that the expectation value of the ion's momentum operator is reduced by nine orders of magnitude on the same timescale, making the ion's position converge to a final value. Based on these results, we conclude that the interaction with the bosonic bath allows for cooling and pinning of the ion by decreasing the expectation value of its kinetic energy and velocity, which constitutes a result of direct relevance for current atom-ion experiments.

Abstract:The dynamics of weakly interacting three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), trapped in external axially symmetric plus anharmonic distortion potential are studied. Within a variational approach and time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, the coupled condensate width equations are derived. By modulating anharmonic distortion of the trapping potential, nonlinear features are studied numerically and illustrated analytically, such as mode coupling of oscillation modes, and resonances. Furthermore, the stability of attractive interaction BEC in both repulsive and attractive anharmonic distortion is examined. We demonstrate that a small repulsive and attractive anharmonic distortion is effective in reducing (extending) the condensate stability region since it decreases (increases) the critical number of atoms in the trapping potential.

Abstract:We analyze, analytically and numerically, the position, momentum, and in particular the angular-momentum variance of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a two-dimensional anisotropic trap for static and dynamic scenarios. The differences between the variances at the mean-field level, which are attributed to the shape of the BEC, and the variances at the many-body level, which incorporate depletion, are used to characterize position, momentum, and angular-momentum correlations in the BEC for finite systems and at the limit of an infinite number of particles where the bosons are $100\%$ condensed. Finally, we also explore inter-connections between the variances.

Abstract:The path integral Monte Carlo method is used to simulate dilute trapped Bose gases and to investigate the equilibrium properties at finite temperatures. The quantum particles have a long-range dipole-dipole interaction and a short-range s-wave interaction. Using an anisotropic pseudopotential for the long-range dipolar interaction and a hard-sphere potential for the short-range s-wave interaction, we calculate the energetics and structural properties as a function of temperature and the number of particles. Also, in order to determine the effects of dipole-dipole forces and the influence of the trapping field on the dipolar condensate, we use two cylindrically symmetric harmonic confinements (a cigar-shaped trap and a disk-shaped trap). We find that the net effect of dipole-dipole interactions is governed by the trapping geometry. For a cigar-shaped trap, the net contribution of dipolar interactions is attractive and the shrinking of the density profiles is observed. For a disk-shaped trap, the net effect of long-range dipolar forces is repulsive and the density profiles expand.
