Abstract:The reversal of the time evolution of the local polarization in an interacting spin system involves a sign change of the effective dipolar Hamiltonian which refocuses the 'spin diffusion' process generating a polarization echo. Here, the attenuation of these echo amplitudes as a function of evolution time is presented for cymantrene and ferrocene polycrystalline samples, involving one and two five spin rings per molecule respectively. We calculate the fraction of polarization which is not refocused because only the secular part of the dipolar Hamiltonian is inverted. The results indicate that, as long as the spin dynamics is restricted to a single ring, the non-inverted part of the Hamiltonian is notable by itself to explain the whole decay of the polarization echoes. A cross over from exponential (cymantrene) to Gaussian (ferrocene) attenuation is experimentally observed. This is attributed to an increase of the relative importance of the spin dynamics, as compared with irreversible interactions, which favors dynamical irreversibility.

Abstract:An ingenious pulse sequence devised by S. Zhang, B. H. Meier, and R. R. Ernst (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 69}, 2149 (1992)) reverses the time evolution (``spin diffusion'') of the local polarization in a dipolar coupled $^{1}$H spin system. This refocusing originates a Polarization Echo whose amplitude attenuates by increasing the time $t_R$ elapsed until the dynamics is reversed. Different functional attenuations are found for a set of dipolar coupled systems: ferrocene, (C$_5$H$_5$)$_2$Fe, cymantrene, (C$_5$H$_5$)Mn(CO)$_3$, and cobaltocene, (C$_5$H$_5$)$_2$Co. To control a relevant variable involved in this attenuation a pulse sequence has been devised to progressively reduce the dipolar dynamics. Since it reduces the evolution of the polarization echo it is referred as REPE sequence. Two extreme behaviors were found while characterizing the materials: In systems with a strong source of relaxation and slow dynamics, the attenuation follows an exponential law (cymantrene). In systems with a strong dipolar dynamics the attenuation is mainly Gaussian. By the application of the REPE sequence the characteristic time of the Gaussian decay is increased until the presence of an underlying dissipative mechanism is revealed (cobaltocene). For ferrocene, however, the attenuation remains Gaussian within the experimental time scale. These two behaviors suggest that the many body quantum dynamics presents an extreme intrinsic instability which, in the presence of small perturbations, leads to the onset of irreversibility. This experimental conclusion is consistent with the tendencies displayed by the numerical solutions of model systems.

Abstract:Time reversal in a macroscopic system is contradicting daily experience. It is practically impossible to restore a shattered cup to its original state by just time reversing the microscopic dynamics that led to its breakage. Yet, with the precise control capabilities provided by modern quantum technology, the unitary evolution of a quantum system can be reversed in time. Here, we implement a time-reversal protocol in a dipolar interacting, isolated many-body spin system represented by Rydberg states in an atomic gas. By changing the states encoding the spin, we flip the sign of the interaction Hamiltonian, and demonstrate the reversal of the relaxation dynamics of the magnetization by letting a demagnetized many-body state evolve back-in-time into a magnetized state. We elucidate the role of atomic motion using the concept of a Loschmidt echo. Finally, by combining the approach with Floquet engineering, we demonstrate time reversal for a large family of spin models with different symmetries. Our method of state transfer is applicable across a wide range of quantum simulation platforms and has applications far beyond quantum many-body physics, reaching from quantum-enhanced sensing to quantum information scrambling.

Abstract:Originally conceived as a thought experiment, an apparatus consisting of two Stern–Gerlach apparatuses joined in an inverted manner touched on the fundamental question of the reversibility of evolution in quantum mechanics. Theoretical analysis showed that uniting the two partial beams requires an extreme level of experimental control, making the proposal in its original form unrealizable in practice. In this work, we revisit the above question in a numerical study concerning the possibility of partial-beam recombination in a spin-coherent manner. Using the Suzuki–Trotter numerical method of wave propagation and a configurable, approximation-free magnetic field, a simulation of a transversal Stern–Gerlach interferometer under ideal conditions is performed. The result confirms what has long been hinted at by theoretical analyses: the transversal Stern–Gerlach interferometer quantum dynamics is fundamentally irreversible even when perfect control of the associated magnetic fields and beams is assumed.

Adiabatic quantum decoherence in many non-interacting subsystems induced by the coupling with a common boson bath

Abstract:This work addresses quantum adiabatic decoherence of many-body spin systems coupled with a boson field in the framework of open quantum systems theory. We generalize the traditional spin-boson model by considering a system-environment interaction Hamiltonian that represents a partition of non-interacting subsystems and highlights the collective correlation that appears exclusively due to the coupling with a common environment. Remarkably, this simple, exactly solvable model encompasses relevant aspects of a many-body open quantum system and features the subtle quantum effects that arise when the size scales up to a macroscopic level. We derive an analytical expression for the time dependence of the density matrix without assuming coarse-graining. The resulting decoherence function is eigen-selective and is a complex exponential whose exponent has a real part that introduces a decay similar to that in the spin-boson model. On the contrary, the imaginary part depends on the quantum numbers and geometry of the whole partition and does not reflect the system temperature. Motivated by decoherence in solid-state NMR we apply the theoretical results to a partition of dipole-coupled spin pairs in contact with a common phonon bath, using typical parameters of hydrated salts. The proposal allows estimating the decoherence time scale in terms of the system physical constants. As a significant novelty, the decoherence function phase depends on the eigenvalue distribution throughout the sample. It plays the leading role, overshadowing the mechanism associated with the bath thermal state. Finally, we apply the formalism to describe decoherence in the "magic echo" NMR reversal experiment. We find that the system-environment correlation explains the origin of irreversibility, and both the decoherence rate value and its dependence on the dipolar frequency, are remarkably similar to the experiment.

Abstract:Refocalization sequences in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) can in principle reverse the coherent evolution under the secular dipolar Hamiltonian of a closed system. We use this experimental strategy to study the effect of irreversible decoherence on the signal amplitude attenuation in a single crystal hydrated salt where the nuclear spin system consists in the set of hydration water proton spins having a strong coupling within each pair and a much weaker coupling with other pairs. We study the experimental response of attenuation times with temperature, crystal orientation with respect to the external magnetic field and rf pulse amplitudes. We find that the observed attenuation of the refocalized signals can be explained by two independent mechanisms: (a) evolution under the non-secular terms of the reversion Hamiltonian, and (b) an intrinsic mechanism having the attributes of irreversible decoherence induced by the coupling with a quantum environment. To characterize (a) we compare the experimental data with the numerical calculation of the refocalized NMR signal of an artificial, closed spin system. To describe (b) we use a model for the irreversible adiabatic decoherence of spin-pairs coupled with a phonon bath which allows evaluating an upper bound for the decoherence times. This model accounts for both the observed dependence of the decoherence times on the eigenvalues of the spin-environment Hamiltonian, and the independence on the sample temperature. This result, then, supports the adiabatic decoherence induced by the dipole-phonon coupling as the explanation for the observed irreversible decay of reverted NMR signals in solids.

Abstract:The presence of pairing correlations within the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) extension to superfluid systems, is tantamount to the presence of a quantum collision integral in the evolution equations, which leads to an obviously non-Markovian behavior of the single-particle occupation probabilities, unexpected in a traditional quantum extension of kinetic equations. The quantum generalization of the Boltzmann equation, based on a collision integral in terms of phase-space occupation probabilities, is the most used approach to describe nuclear dynamics and which by construction has a Markovian character. By contrast, the extension of TDDFT to superfluid systems has similarities with the Baym and Kadanoff kinetic formalism, which however is formulated with much more complicated evolution equations with long-time memory terms and non-local interactions. The irreversibility of quantum dynamics is properly characterized using the canonical wave functions/natural orbitals, and the associated canonical occupation probabilities, which provide the smallest possible representation of any fermionic many-body wave function. In this basis, one can evaluate the orbital entanglement entropy, which is an excellent measure of the non-equilibrium dynamics of an isolated system. To explore the phenomena of memory effects and irreversibility, we investigate the use of canonical wave functions/natural orbitals in nuclear many-body calculations, assessing their utility for static calculations, dynamics, and symmetry restoration. As the number of single-particle states is generally quite large, it is highly desirable to work in the canonical basis whenever possible, preferably with a cutoff. We show that truncating the number of canonical wave functions can be a valid approach in the case of static calculations, but that such a truncation is not valid for time-dependent calculations...

Exploiting nonequilibrium phase transitions and strong symmetries for continuous measurement of collective observables

Abstract:Dissipative many-body quantum dynamics can feature strong symmetries which give rise to conserved quantities. We discuss here how a strong symmetry in conjunction with a nonequilibrium phase transition allows to devise a protocol for measuring collective many-body observables. To demonstrate this idea we consider a collective spin system whose constituents are governed by a dissipative dynamics that conserves the total angular momentum. We show that by continuously monitoring the system output the value of the total angular momentum can be inferred directly from the time-integrated emission signal, without the need of repeated projective measurements or reinitializations of the spins. This may offer a route towards the measurement of collective properties in qubit ensembles, with applications in quantum tomography, quantum computation and quantum metrology.

Abstract:The non-equilibrium physics of many-body quantum systems harbors various unconventional phenomena. In this study, we experimentally investigate one of the most puzzling of these phenomena -- the quantum Mpemba effect, where a tilted ferromagnet restores its symmetry more rapidly when it is farther from the symmetric state compared to when it is closer. We present the first experimental evidence of the occurrence of this effect in a trapped-ion quantum simulator. The symmetry breaking and restoration are monitored through entanglement asymmetry, probed via randomized measurements, and postprocessed using the classical shadows technique. Our findings are further substantiated by measuring the Frobenius distance between the experimental state and the stationary thermal symmetric theoretical state, offering direct evidence of subsystem thermalization.

Abstract:We simulated the quantum dynamics for magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) in the oscillating cantilever-driven adiabatic reversals (OSCAR) technique. We estimated the frequency shift of the cantilever vibrations and demonstrated that this shift causes the formation of a Schr\"odinger cat state which has some similarities and differences from the conventional MRFM technique which uses cyclic adiabatic reversals of spins. The interaction of the cantilever with the environment is shown to quickly destroy the coherence between the two possible cantilever trajectories. We have shown that using partial adiabatic reversals, one can produce a significant increase in the OSCAR signal.

Abstract: In this letter we propose a protocol to reverse a quantum many-body dynamical process. We name it "many-body echo" because the underlying physics is closely related to the spin echo effect in nuclear magnetic resonance systems. We consider a periodical modulation of the interaction strength in a weakly interacting Bose condensate, which resonantly excites quasi-particles from the condensate. A dramatic phenomenon is that, after pausing the interaction modulation for half a period and then continuing on with the same modulation, nearly all the excited quasi-particles in the resonance modes will be absorbed back into the condensate. During the intermediate half period, the free evolution introduces a $\pi$ phase, which plays a role reminiscent of that played by the $\pi$-pulse in the spin echo. Comparing our protocol with another one implemented by the Chicago group in a recent experiment, we find that ours is more effective at reversing the many-body process. The difference between these two schemes manifests the physical effect of the micro-motion in the Floquet theory. Our scheme can be generalised to other periodically driven many-body systems.

Abstract:Many-body entangled quantum spin systems exhibit emergent phenomena such as topological quantum spin liquids with distinct excitation spectra accessed in inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Here we simulate the dynamics of a quantum spin dimer, the basic quantum unit of emergent many-body spin systems. While canonical Trotterization methods require deep circuits precluding long time-scale simulations, we demonstrate 'direct' Resource-Efficient Fast-forwarding (REFF) measurements with short-depth circuits that can be used to capture longer time dynamics on quantum hardware. The temporal evolution of the 2-spin correlation coefficients enabled the calculation of the dynamical structure factor $S(\mathbf{Q},\omega)$ - the key component of the neutron scattering cross-section. We simulate the triplet gap and the triplet splitting of the quantum dimer with sufficient fidelity to compare to experimental neutron data. Our results on current circuit hardware pave an important avenue to benchmark, or even predict, the outputs of the costly INS experiments.

Abstract:We utilize a superconducting qubit processor to experimentally probe non-Markovian dynamics of an entangled qubit pair. We prepare an entangled state between two qubits and monitor the evolution of entanglement over time as one of the qubits interacts with a small quantum environment consisting of an auxiliary transmon qubit coupled to its readout cavity. We observe the collapse and revival of the entanglement as a signature of quantum memory effects in the environment. We then engineer the non-Markovianity of the environment by populating its readout cavity with thermal photons to show a transition from non-Markovian to Markovian dynamics, ultimately reaching a regime where the quantum Zeno effect creates a decoherence-free subspace that effectively stabilizes the entanglement between the qubits. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.200401 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The principle of microscopic reversibility lies at the core of fluctuation theorems, which have extended our understanding of the second law of thermodynamics to the statistical level. In the quantum regime, however, this elementary principle should be amended as the system energy cannot be sharply determined at a given quantum phase space point. In this Letter, we propose and experimentally test a quantum generalization of the microscopic reversibility when a quantum system interacts with a heat bath through energy-preserving unitary dynamics. Quantum effects can be identified by noting that the backward process is less likely to happen in the existence of quantum coherence between the system's energy eigenstates. The experimental demonstration has been realized by mixing coherent and thermal states in a beam-splitter, followed by heterodyne detection in an optical setup. We verify that the quantum modification for the principle of microscopic reversibility is critical in the low-temperature limit, while the quantum-to-classical transition is observed as the temperature of the thermal field gets higher.

Temporal relaxation of disordered many-body quantum systems under driving and dissipation

Abstract:Strong disorder inhibits thermalization in isolated quantum systems and may lead to many-body localization (MBL). In realistic situations, however, the observation of MBL is hindered by residual couplings of the system to an environment, which acts as a bath and pushes the system to thermal equilibrium. This paper is concerned with the transient dynamics prior to thermalization and studies how the relaxation of a disordered system is altered under the influence of external driving and dissipation. We consider a scenario where a disordered quantum spin chain is placed into a strong magnetic field that polarizes the system. By suddenly removing the external field, a nonequilibrium situation is induced and the decay of magnetization probes the degree of localization. We show that by driving the system with light, one can distinguish between different dynamical regimes as the spins are more or less susceptible to the drive depending on the strength of the disorder. We provide evidence that some of these signatures remain observable at intermediate time scales even when the spin chain is subject to noise due to coupling to an environment. From a numerical point of view, we demonstrate that the open-system dynamics starting from a class of experimentally relevant mixed initial states can be efficiently simulated by combining dynamical quantum typicality with stochastic unraveling of Lindblad master equations.

Abstract:A quantum system prepared in an initial state that is not an eigenstate of its Hamiltonian will exhibit out-of-equilibrium dynamics. These dynamics can span multiple timescales, from the transient response of local correlations to the long-time equilibration of the system. The possibilities seem vast, depending on the initial state, the nature of the interactions and the observables being measured. Reporting in Nature Physics, Yuchen Li and colleagues have observed that the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of local magnetization correlations measured using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) follow a universal form 1 . The free induction decay signal records the temporal correlations of the local magnetization following the quench. Previous studies had suggested that the signal should follow a universal form, with the correlations decaying either as a simple exponential (exp(– γt )) or as a damped oscillation (cos( ωt )exp(– γt )) (ref. 3,4 ). Careful NMR experiments on a wide range of systems, including polycrystalline xenon lattices and calcium fluoride 5,6 , confirmed such behaviour. Additionally, a second oscillatory decay mode was observed in calcium fluoride 7 . However, the connection between these universal decays and the parameters of the underlying Hamiltonian remained unclear, limiting the possibility of predicting these universal modes in more general settings.

Abstract:We explore the effects of spatial locality on the dynamics of random quantum systems subject to a Markovian noise. To this end, we study a model in which the system Hamiltonian and its couplings to the noise are random matrices whose entries decay as power laws of distance, with distinct exponents αH , αL . The steady state is always featureless, but the rate at which it is approached exhibits three phases depending on αH and αL : a phase where the approach is asymptotically exponential as a result of a gap in the spectrum of the Lindblad superoperator that generates the dynamics, and two gapless phases with subexponential relaxation, distinguished by the manner in which the gap decreases with system size. Within perturbation theory, the phase boundaries in the (αH,αL) plane differ for weak and strong decoherence, suggesting phase transitions as a function of noise strength. Non-Markovian dynamics of a single excitation within many-body dissipative systems

Abstract:We explore the dynamics of N coupled atomic two-level systems embedded within a generic bosonic reservoir under specific system symmetries. In the regime of many atoms identically coupled to a single reservoir, we identify remarkable effects, notably that the initial configuration of the atomic excited-state amplitudes strongly impacts the dynamics of the system and can even fully sever the system from its environment. Additionally, we find that steady-state amplitudes of the excited states become independent of the specific structure of the bosonic reservoirs considered. The framework introduced is deployed to model a structured photonic reservoir associated with a photonic crystal, where it recaptures previous theoretical and experimental results for the superradiance rates even within the single-excitation regime. For the photonic band-gap system, our formalism predicts the generation of pairwise entanglement between initially uncorrelated atomic systems. Furthermore, it suggests that—with respect to a non-Markovian metric—the non-Markovianity of the aggregated many-atom system is modulated by the total number of atoms.
