Abstract:Since it's rediscovery in the twentieth century, the Mpemba effect, where a far-from-equilibrium state may relax faster than a state closer to equilibrium, has been extensively studied in classical systems and has recently received significant attention in quantum systems. Many theories explaining this counter-intuitive behavior in classical systems rely on memory effects. However, in quantum systems, the relation between the Mpemba effect and memory has remained unexplored. In this work, we consider a general non-Markovian open quantum setting and reveal new classes of quantum Mpemba effects, with no analog in Markovian quantum dynamics. Generically, open quantum dynamics possess a finite memory time and a unique steady state. Due to non-Markovian dynamics, even if the system is initialized in the steady state it can take a long time to relax back. We find other initial states that reach the steady state much faster. Most notably, we demonstrate that there can be an initial state in which the system reaches the steady state within the finite memory time itself, therefore giving the fastest possible relaxation to stationarity. We verify the effect for quantum dot systems coupled to electronic reservoirs in equilibrium and non-equilibrium setups at weak, intermediate and strong coupling, and both with and without interactions. Our work provides new insights into the rich physics underlying accelerated relaxation in quantum systems.

Abstract:The behavior of systems far from equilibrium is often complex and unpredictable, challenging and sometimes overturning the physical intuition derived from equilibrium scenarios. One striking example of this is the Mpemba effect, which implies that non-equilibrium states can sometimes relax more rapidly when they are further from equilibrium. Despite a rich historical background, the precise conditions and mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain unclear. Recently, there has been growing interest in investigating Mpemba-like effects within quantum systems. In this work, we explore a quantum manifestation of the Mpemba effect in a simple and paradigmatic model of open quantum systems: the damped quantum harmonic oscillator, which describes the thermalization process of a bosonic mode in contact with a thermal bath at finite temperature $T$. By means of an exact analytical analysis of the relaxation dynamics, we demonstrate that any initial distribution of populations with a mean excitation number exactly equal to the mean number of quanta in the thermal equilibrium state displays an accelerated relaxation to equilibrium, leading to a pronounced Mpemba effect. In particular, one can find a broad class of far-from-equilibrium distributions that relax to equilibrium faster than any other initial thermal state with a temperature $T'$ arbitrarily close to $T$. Thermalization becomes even faster when the initial out-of-equilibrium population distribution matches the first $r$ moments of the equilibrium distribution. In this scenario, the relaxation rate increases linearly with $r$, resulting in a super-accelerated thermalization process.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum Mpemba effect from the perspective of non-equilibrium quantum thermodynamics by studying relaxation dynamics of quantum systems coupled to a Markovian heat bath, which are described by Davies maps. Starting from a state with coherences in the energy eigenbasis, we demonstrate that an exponential speedup to equilibrium will always occur if the state is transformed to a diagonal state in the energy eigenbasis, provided that the spectral gap of the generator is defined by a complex eigenvalue. When the transformed state has a higher nonequilibrium free energy, we argue using thermodynamic reasoning that this is a \textit{genuine} quantum Mpemba effect. Furthermore, we show how a unitary transformation on an initial state can always be constructed to yield the effect and demonstrate our findings by studying the dynamics of both the non-equilibrium free energy and the irreversible entropy production in single and multi-qubit examples.

Abstract:The Mpemba effect was originally referred to as the faster icing of a higher-temperature system than a lower-temperature system, and was later generalized to anomalous decays of both classical and quantum observables to equilibrium states. Mpemba effect is mostly considered in classical systems and during cooling processes towards equilibrium states. We investigate the emergence of the effect in nonequilibrium quantum systems where the system has no asymptotic equilibrium state to approach. Instead, the system is put in contact with two different baths, and only a nonequilibrium state exists, sustained by constant energy injection from the surrounding thermal baths. Firstly, we show that the nonequilibrium conditions can dramatically enlarge the parameter regimes where the MPE emerges. Secondly, we demonstrate that the anomalous MPEs and inverse MPEs emerge in the evolution of quantum correlations in the two-site fermionic system and that nonequilibrium conditions can expedite or delay the MPEs. Thirdly, we show that the nonequilibrium-induced quantum coherence can have considerable contributions to the emergence of the MPE which the conventional Lindbladian dynamics fails to capture.

Abstract:We develop a systematic and efficient approach for numerically solving the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation for an open quantum system that can be strongly coupled to an environment. As an important application, we consider a real-time simulation of a spin-boson model in a strong-coupling regime that is difficult to deal with using conventional methods. We show that the non-Markovian stochastic Schr\"odinger equation can be efficiently implemented as a real-time simulation for this model, so as to give an accurate description of spin-boson dynamics beyond the rotating-wave approximation.
Going beyond quantum Markovianity and back to reality: An exact master equation study

Abstract:The precise characterization of dynamics in open quantum systems often presents significant challenges, leading to the introduction of various approximations to simplify a model. One commonly used strategy involves Markovian approximations, assuming a memoryless environment. In this study, such approximations are not used and an analytical dynamical depiction of an open quantum system is provided. The system under consideration is an oscillator that is surrounded by a bath of oscillators. The resulting dynamics are characterized by a second-order complex coefficient linear differential equation, which may be either homogeneous or inhomogeneous. Moreover, distinct dynamical regions emerge, depending on certain parameter values. Notably, the steady-state average excitation number (AEN) of the system shows rapid escalation with increasing non-Markovianity, reflecting the intricacies of real-world dynamics. In cases where there is detuning between the system frequency and the environmental central frequency within a non-Markovian regime, the AEN maintains its initial value for an extended period. Furthermore, the application of pulse control can effectively protect the quantum system from decoherence effects without using approximations. The pulse control can not only prolong the relaxation time of the oscillator, but can also be used to speed up the relaxation process, depending on the specifications of the pulse. By employing a kick pulse, the Mpemba effect can be observed in the non-Markovian regime in a surprisingly super-cooling-like effect.

Abstract:Quantum systems of interest are typically coupled to several quantum channels (more generally environments). In this paper, we develop an exact stochastic Schrödinger equation for an open quantum system coupled to a hybrid environment containing both bosonic and fermionic particles. Such a stochastic differential equation may be obtained directly from a microscopic model through employing a classical complex Gaussian noise and a non-commutative fermionic noise to simulate the hybrid bath. As an immediate application of our developed stochastic approach, we show that the evolution of the reduced density matrix can be derived by taking the average over both the bosonic noise and the fermionic noise. Three specific examples are given in this paper to illustrate that the hybrid quantum trajectory is fully consistent with the standard quantum mechanics. Our examples also shed new light on the special features exhibited by the fermionic bath and bosonic bath.

Abstract:One longstanding difficult problem in quantum dissipative dynamics is to solve the spin-boson model in a non-Markovian regime where a tractable systematic master equation does not exist. The spin-boson model is particularly important due to its crucial applications in quantum noise control and manipulation as well as its central role in developing quantum theories of open systems. Here we solve this important model by developing a non-Markovian quantum Langevin approach. By projecting the quantum Langevin equation onto the coherent states of the bath, we can derive a set of non-Markovian quantum Bloch equations containing no explicit noise variables. This special feature offers a tremendous advantage over the existing stochastic Schr\"odinger equations in numerical simulations. The physical significance and generality of our approach are briefly discussed.

Abstract:We explore the effects of spatial locality on the dynamics of random quantum systems subject to a Markovian noise. To this end, we study a model in which the system Hamiltonian and its couplings to the noise are random matrices whose entries decay as power laws of distance, with distinct exponents αH , αL . The steady state is always featureless, but the rate at which it is approached exhibits three phases depending on αH and αL : a phase where the approach is asymptotically exponential as a result of a gap in the spectrum of the Lindblad superoperator that generates the dynamics, and two gapless phases with subexponential relaxation, distinguished by the manner in which the gap decreases with system size. Within perturbation theory, the phase boundaries in the (αH,αL) plane differ for weak and strong decoherence, suggesting phase transitions as a function of noise strength. Abstract:A finite-dimensional quantum system is coupled to a bath of oscillators in thermal equilibrium at temperature T > 0 . We show that for fixed, small values of the coupling constant λ , the true reduced dynamics of the system is approximated by the completely positive, trace preserving Markovian semigroup generated by the Davies-Lindblad generator. The difference between the true and the Markovian dynamics is O ( | λ | 1 / 4 ) for all times, meaning that the solution of the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad master equation is approximating the true dynamics to accuracy O ( | λ | 1 / 4 ) for all times. Our method is based on a recently obtained expansion of the full system-bath propagator. It applies to reservoirs with correlation functions decaying in time as 1 / t 4 or faster, which is a significant improvement relative to the previously required exponential decay.

Abstract:We generalize the classical thermal Mpemba effect (where an initially hot system relaxes faster to the final equilibrium state than a cold one) to open quantum systems coupled to several reservoirs. We show that, in general, two different types of quantum Mpemba effects are possible. They may be distinguished by quantum state tomography. However, the existence of a quantum Mpemba effect (without determining the type) can already be established by measuring simpler observables such as currents or energies. Mpemba Meets Quantum Chaos: Anomalous Relaxation and Mpemba Crossings in Dissipative Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Models

Abstract:The Mpemba effect (MPE), named after a student who first observed the phenomenon, has intrigued scientists for decades by showing that hot liquid can freeze faster than cold under certain conditions. Recently, analogous effects have been identified in integrable quantum systems. However, a key distinction between the classical MPE and its quantum analog is that the latter relies predominantly on the of the properties of the initial states rather than the cooling rate. In this paper, we explore the quench dynamics of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) systems coupled to thermal baths. We investigate three scenarios--SYK systems coupled to SYK thermal baths, SYK systems coupled to two thermal baths at different temperatures, and dissipative SYKs modeled by the Lindblad equation. In the regimes where the system and the baths are strongly coupled, we observe effective temperature oscillations and Mpemba crossings (MPCs)--the effect of temperature crossings which are absent in quasi-equilibrium thermodynamic analysis--when the system is strongly coupled to SYK thermal baths. These effects are not observed in the Liouvillian formalism. The emergence of MPCs in quantum chaotic systems exhibits strong parallels with the classical MPE.

Effect of dynamics on anomalous thermal relaxations and information exchange

Abstract:The Mpemba effect, an example of anomalous thermal relaxations, occurs when a system prepared at a hot temperature overtakes an identical system prepared at a warm temperature and cools down faster to the environment's temperature. We study the Mpemba effect in Markov jump processes on linear reaction networks as a function of the relaxation dynamics. The dynamics are characterized by a load distribution factor introduced to control the transition rates in a manner that obeys detailed balance. We provide analytical results and insights on when the Mpemba effect happens in the unimolecular reactions of three species as a function of the dynamics. In particular, we derive that the regions of the Strong Mpemba effect in cooling and heating are non-overlapping and that there is, at most, a single Strong Mpemba temperature. Next, we illustrate our results on a Maxwell demon setup, where we show that one can utilize the strong variant of the Mpemba effect to have shorter cycles of the Maxwell demon device, leading to increased power output, and stable device operation, without sacrificing efficiency.

Abstract:An ancient and counterintuitive phenomenon know as the Mpemba effect (water can cool faster when initially heated up) showcases the critical role of initial conditions in relaxation processes. How to realize and utilize this effect for speeding up relaxation is an important but challenging task in purely quantum system till now. Here, we report the first experiment, as far as we know,about the strong Mpemba effect in a single trapped ion system in which an exponentially expedited relaxation in time is observed by preparing an optimal initial state with no excitation of the slowest decaying mode. Also, we find that the condition of realizing such effect coincides with the Liouvillian exceptional point, featuring the coalescence of both the eigenvalues and the eigenmodes of the system. Our work provides an efficient strategy to exponentially accelerate relaxations of quantum system to their stationary state, and suggests a link unexplored yet between the Mpemba effect and the non-Hermitian physics. It could open up the door to engineer a wide range of dissipative quantum systems by utilizing the anomalous Mpemba effect, for applications in quantum simulation and quantum information processing.

Strong Quantum Mpemba Effect with Squeezed Thermal Reservoirs

Abstract:The phenomena where a quantum system can be exponentially accelerated to its stationary state has been refereed to as Quantum Mpemba Effect (QMpE). Due to its analogy with the classical Mpemba effect, hot water freezes faster than cold water, this phenomena has garnered significant attention. Although QMpE has been characterized and experimentally verified in different scenarios, sufficient and necessary conditions to achieve such a phenomenon are still under investigation. In this paper we address a sufficient condition for QMpE through a general approach for open quantum systems dynamics. With help of the Mpemba parameter introduced in this work to quantify how strong the QMpE can be, we discuss how our conditions can predict and explain the emergence of weak and strong QMpE in a robust way. As application, by harnessing intrinsic non-classical nature of squeezed thermal environments, we show how strong QMpE can be effectively induced when our conditions are met. Due to the thermal nature of environment considered in our model, our work demonstrates that a hot qubit freezes faster than a cold qubit only in presence of squeezed reservoirs. Our results provide tools and new insights opening a broad avenue for further investigation at most fundamental levels of this peculiar phenomena in the quantum realm.

Hyper-acceleration of quantum thermalization dynamics by bypassing long-lived coherences: An analytical treatment

Abstract:We develop a perturbative technique for solving Markovian quantum dissipative dynamics, with the perturbation parameter being a small gap in the eigenspectrum. As an example, we apply the technique and straightforwardly obtain analytically the dynamics of a three-level system with quasidegenerate excited states, where quantum coherences persist for very long times, proportional to the inverse of the energy splitting squared. We then show how to bypass this long-lived coherent dynamics and accelerate the relaxation to thermal equilibration in a hyper-exponential manner, a Markovian quantum-assisted Mpemba-like effect. This hyper acceleration of the equilibration process manifests if the initial state is carefully prepared, such that its coherences precisely store the amount of population relaxing from the initial condition to the equilibrium state. Our analytical method for solving quantum dissipative dynamics readily provides equilibration timescales, and as such it reveals how coherent and incoherent effects interlace in the dynamics. It further advices on how to accelerate relaxation processes, which is desirable when long-lived quantum coherences stagnate dynamics.

Intrinsic Quantum Mpemba Effect in Markovian Systems and Quantum Circuits

Abstract:The quantum Mpemba effect (QME) describes the counterintuitive phenomenon in which a system farther from equilibrium reaches steady state faster than one closer to equilibrium. However, ambiguity in defining a suitable distance measure between quantum states has led to varied interpretations across different contexts. Here we propose the intrinsic quantum Mpemba effect (IQME), defined using the trajectory length traced by the quantum state as a more appropriate measure of distance--distinct from previous trajectory-independent metrics. By treating quantum states as points in a Riemannian space defined by statistical distance, the trajectory length emerges as a more natural and accurate characterization of the counterintuitive dynamics, drawing an analogy to the classical Brachistochrone problem. We demonstrate the existence of IQME in Markovian systems and extend its definition to quantum circuits, thereby establishing a unified framework applicable to both open and closed systems. Notably, we observe an IQME in a $U(1)$-symmetric circuit, offering new insights into the rates of quantum thermalization for different initial states. This work deepens our understanding of quantum state evolution and lays the foundation for accurately capturing novel quantum dynamical behaviour.

Asymptotic relaxation in quantum Markovian dynamics

Abstract:We investigate the long-time dynamics of generic time-dependent Lindblad master equations. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions such that asymptotically the dynamics is independent on the initial state preparation. These conditions represent a natural extension of Spohn's theorem to the case of a time-dependent generator. To illustrate our results, we analyse a quantum thermodynamics scenario and discuss the uniqueness of the limit cycle in a continuous Otto engine fuelled by a driven Ising chain, where the dissipation is described by non-local jump operators. As corollary of our main result, we show that any master equation which exhibits non-Markovianity in a finite time interval can be equally addressed by means of our approach. These findings pave the way for developing a more general theory of relaxation beyond the Markovian case.

Abstract:The exponential suppression of macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in the number of elements to be reconfigured is an essential element of broken symmetry phases. This suppression is also a core bottleneck in quantum algorithms, such as traversing an energy landscape in optimization, and adiabatic state preparation more generally. In this work, we demonstrate exponential acceleration of MQT through Floquet engineering with the application of a uniform, high frequency transverse drive field. Using the ferromagnetic phase of the transverse field Ising model in one and two dimensions as a prototypical example, we identify three phenomenological regimes as a function of drive strength. For weak drives, the system exhibits exponentially decaying tunneling rates but robust magnetic order; in the crossover regime at intermediate drive strength, we find polynomial decay of tunnelling alongside vanishing magnetic order; and at very strong drive strengths both the Rabi frequency and time-averaged magnetic order are approximately constant with increasing system size. We support these claims with extensive full wavefunction and tensor network numerical simulations, and theoretical analysis. An experimental test of these results presents a technologically important and novel scientific question accessible on NISQ-era quantum computers.

Quantum Mpemba Effect in Random Circuits

Abstract:The essence of the Mpemba effect is that non-equilibrium systems may relax faster the further they are from their equilibrium configuration. In the quantum realm, this phenomenon arises in the dynamics of closed systems, where it is witnessed by fundamental features such as symmetry and entanglement. Here, we study the quantum Mpemba effect in charge-preserving random circuits on qudits via entanglement asymmetry, combining extensive numerical simulations and analytical mapping to a classical statistical mechanics problem. We show that the more asymmetric certain classes of initial states (tilted ferromagnets) are, the faster they restore symmetry and reach the grand-canonical ensemble. Conversely, other classes of states (tilted antiferromagnets) do not show the Mpemba effect. Our analysis is based on minimal principles -- locality, unitarity, and symmetry. Consequently, our results represent a significant advancement in clarifying the emergence of Mpemba physics in generic systems, including Hamiltonian and Floquet quantum circuits.
