Abstract:We report a theoretical derivation of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix parameters and the accompanying mixing angles. These results are arrived at from the exceptional Jordan algebra applied to quark states, and from expressing flavor eigenstates (i.e. left-chiral states) as superposition of mass eigenstates (i.e. the right-chiral states) weighted by square-root of mass. Flavor mixing for quarks is mediated by the square-root mass eigenstates, and the mass ratios used have been derived in earlier work from a left-right symmetric extension of the standard model. This permits a construction of the CKM matrix from first principles. There exist only four normed division algebras, they can be listed as follows - the real numbers $\mathbb{R}$, the complex numbers $\mathbb{C}$, the quaternions $\mathbb{H}$ and the octonions $\mathbb{O}$. The first three algebras are fairly well known; however, octonions as algebra are less studied. Recent research has pointed towards the importance of octonions in the study of high energy physics. Clifford algebras and the standard model are being studied closely. The main advantage of this approach is that the spinor representations of the fundamental fermions can be constructed easily here as the left ideals of the algebra. Also the action of various Spin Groups on these representations too can be studied easily. In this work, we build on some recent advances in the field and try to determine the CKM angles from an algebraic framework. We obtain the mixing angle values as $\theta_{12}=11.093^o, \theta_{13}=0.172^o, \theta_{23}=4.054^o$. In comparison, the corresponding experimentally measured values for these angles are $13.04^o \pm 0.05^o, 0.201^o \pm 0.011^o, 2.38^o \pm 0.06^o $. The agreement of theory with experiment is likely to improve when running of quark masses is taken into account.

Abstract:We present a new QCD sum rule with high sensitivity to the continuum regions of charm and bottom quark pair production. Combining this sum rule with existing ones yields very stable results for the msbar quark masses, m_c(m_c)$ and m_b (m_b). Comparison of our approach with experimental data allows for a robust theoretical error estimate. We have also provided a new evaluation of the lifetime of the tau lepton, serving as a strong constraint on alpha_s.

Abstract:Axial vector (J(PC) = 1(++)) charmonium and bottomonium hybrid masses are determined via QCD Laplace sum-rules. Previous sum-rule studies in this channel did not incorporate the dimension-six gluon condensate, which has been shown to be important for 1(--) and 0(-+) heavy quark hybrids. An updated analysis of axial vector charmonium and bottomonium hybrids is presented, including the effects of the dimension-six gluon condensate. The axial vector charmonium and bottomonium hybrid masses are predicted to be 5.13 and 11.32 GeV, respectively. We discuss the implications of this result for the charmonium-like 'XYZ' states and the charmonium hybrid multiplet structure observed in recent lattice calculations.

Abstract:The non-zero Dirac phases <math>δq</math> and <math>δl</math> in the CKM and PMNS mixing matrices signify CP violation. In general they are independent. Experimental data including recent T2K results show, however, that in the original KM parameterization for the mixing matrix, the sum <math>δKMq+δKMl</math> is close to zero with <math>δKMq</math> to be approximately <math>π/2</math>. The KM parameterization may have provided some hints that these phases are actually related and CP is maximally violated. We show that this sum rule can be accommodated in models with spontaneous CP violation where both phases originate from a non-trivial common spontaneous CP violating maximized phase in the Higgs potential. We find some interesting phenomenological consequences for flavor changing neutral current and CP violation for such a model. In particular, data from <math>Bs−B¯s</math> mixing provide very strong constraints on the mass scale for the new neutral scalars in the model, yet the model still allows the electric dipole moments of electron and neutron to reach to their current upper bounds. The model can be tested by near future experiments.

Hierarchy of CKM matrix elements and implications of unitarity

Abstract:The hierarchy amongst the CKM matrix elements, highlighted recently by Luo and Xing, has been rigorously revisited using the PDG parameterization incorporating unitarity constraints. Further, we have explored the evaluation of the CP violating parameter \epsilon_k for the 9 possible unitarity ensured equivalent independent parametrizations of CKM matrix. Interestingly, we find that not all of these reproduce the value of parameter \epsilon_k, this being presumably due to the hierarchical nature of the CKM matrix elements. This situation is echoing similar conclusions regarding the evaluation of Jarlskog's rephasing invariant parameter J through unitarity ensured equivalent possibilities.

Abstract:QCD sum rules are employed to determine whether the $X(3872)$ can be described as a mixed state that couples to ${J}^{PC}={1}^{++}$ charmonium hybrid and $\overline{D}{D}^{*}$ molecular currents. After calculating the mixed correlator of hybrid and molecular currents, we formulate the sum rule in terms of a mixing parameter that interpolates between the pure molecular and hybrid scenarios. As the mixing parameter is increased from the pure molecular case, the predicted mass increases until it reaches a maximum value in good agreement with the $X(3872)$ and the resulting sum-rule analysis appears more robust than the pure molecular case.

Abstract:The 0(++) glueball mass is analyzed in the QCD sum rules. We show that in order to determine the 0(++) glueball mass by using the QCD sum rules method, it is necessary to clarify the following three ingredients: (1) to choose the appropriate moment with acceptable parameters which satisfy all of the criteria; (2) to take into account the radiative corrections; (3) to estimate an additional contribution to the glueball mass from the lowest lying (q) over bar q resonance. We conclude that the key point is to choose suitable moments to determine the 0(++) glueball mass; the radiative corrections do not affect it sensitively and the composite resonance has little effect on it. Abstract:We calculate the masses of the light-quark hybrid mesons with the quantum numbers 0(++) and 0(-+) by using the QCD sum rules. Two kinds of interpolated currents with the same quantum numbers are employed. We find that approximately equal masses are predicted for the 0(++) hybrid state using the different currents, and different masses are obtained for the 0(++) hybrid state using the different currents. The prediction depends on the interaction between the gluon and the quarks in the low-lying hybrid mesons. The mixing effect on the mass of the light-quark hybrid mesons through the low-energy theorem has also been examined, and it is found that this mixing shifts the masses of the hybrid mesons and the glueball a little.

Abstract:The effect from quark masses and transversal motion on the Gottfried, Bjorken, and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules is examined by using a quark-parton model of nucleon structure functions based on an improved scaling variable. Its use results in corrections to the Gottfried, Bjorken, and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules. We use the Brodsky-Huang-Lepage prescription of light-cone wavefunctions to estimate the size of the corrections. We constrain our choice of parameters by the roughly known higher twist corrections to the Bjorken sum rule and find that the resulting corrections to the Gottfried and Ellis-Jaffe sum rules are relevant, though not large enough to explain the observed sum rule violations.
A Unified Description of Quark and Lepton Mass Matrices in a Universal Seesaw Model

Abstract:In the democratic universal seesaw model, the mass matrices are given by \bar{f}_L m_L F_R + \bar{F}_L m_R f_R + \bar{F}_L M_F F_R (f: quarks and leptons; F: hypothetical heavy fermions), m_L and m_R are universal for up- and down-fermions, and M_F has a structure ({\bf 1}+ b_f X) (b_f is a flavour-dependent parameter, and X is a democratic matrix). The model can successfully explain the quark masses and CKM mixing parameters in terms of the charged lepton masses by adjusting only one parameter, b_f. However, so far, the model has not been able to give the observed bimaximal mixing for the neutrino sector. In the present paper, we consider that M_F in the quark sectors are still "fully" democratic, while M_F in the lepton sectors are partially democratic. Then, the revised model can reasonably give a nearly bimaximal mixing without spoiling the previous success in the quark sectors.

In recent years, inverse problem methods, especially the inverse matrix method, have shown better handling of QCD sum rules. This work continues to develop the inverse matrix method. Then follow the general steps of the inverse matrix method to extract physical quantities such as decay constants that we are sometimes more interested in.

QCD sum rule analysis of $0^{+}$ four-quark states

Abstract:{We present a comprehensive QCD sum rules analysis at next-to-leading order for all types of $J^P=0^{+}$ four-quark states composed of $u$, $d$, and $s$ quarks. The eigenvectors of the renormalization matrix are chosen to be the renormalized four-quark operators, which can be equally interpreted as tetraquark or molecule operators. Meanwhile, the typical nonet masses given by bare tetraquark operators are lower than those given by bare molecule operators. Most of the nonet masses are around $1-2\text{GeV}$, and they can be interpreted as the $0^+$ mesons observed in experiments. We find a category of four-quark nonets with masses $\lesssim1\text{GeV}$, potentially corresponding to the light $0^+$ mesons $f_0(500)$, $K^*_0(700)$, $f_0(980)$, and $a_0(980)$. On the other hand, the possible 27-fold states are heavier than most of the nonets, with masses $\gtrsim 2\text{GeV}$. The main uncertainty arises from the factorization of high-dimensional condensates, which usually underestimates their values. To address this, we introduce deviation factors for the dimension-6, -8, and -10 condensates, and vary them over a wide range to obtain conservative estimates of the $0^+$ four-quark state masses. Some general properties of the $0^+$ light four-quark states can be derived that do not rely on precise numerical values. We also find that the ambiguity in the factorization of the dimension-8 condensate can introduce a larger discrepancy than previously estimated. As a byproduct, we propose a simple trick for renormalizing multi-quark operators at the one-loop level.

Abstract:Recent works show that the original Kobayashi-Maskawa (KM) form of fermion mixing matrix exhibits some advantages, especially when discussing problems such as unitarity boomerangs and maximal CP violation hypothesis. Therefore, the KM form of fermion mixing matrix is systematically studied in this paper. Starting with a general triminimal expansion of the KM matrix, we discuss the triminimal and Wolfenstein-like parametrizations with different basis matrices in detail. The quark-lepton complementarity relations play an important role in our discussions on describing quark mixing and lepton mixing in a unified way.
CKM and PMNS mixing matrix from $SO(2)$ flavor symmetry

Abstract:The relation between quark masses and CKM mixing is studied based on an approximate chiral $SO(2)_L\times SO(2)_R$ flavor symmetry of quark mass matrix. In mass hierarchy limit, the mass ratio effect to CKM mixing is suppressed, which separates mass hierarchy and quark flavor mixing into two independent problems. We show that CKM mixing is dominated by two left-handed $SO(2)_L^{u,d}$ symmetry while mass hierarchy only provides slight corrections. The same mixing structure is generalized to lepton sector with extended Dirac neutrinos. The common flavor mixing provides a novel comprehension on the relation between quark CKM mixing and lepton PMNS mixing.

Abstract:We systematically construct I (J(P)) = 0(3(+)) six-quark local interpolating currents without derivative operators. We discuss the best choice of operator and select three Delta-Delta-like operators to perform QCD sum rule analyses to calculate the mass of the d*(2380). The mass extracted from this analysis is M-d* = 2.4 +/- 0.2 GeV, consistent with the d*(2380) mass observed by the WASA detector at COSY. We also obtain a sum rule lower mass bound M-d* > 2.25 GeV. We also consider the effect of mixing of singlet dibaryon fields with the same quantum numbers, and perform the QCD sum rule analysis of the mixed interpolating current and extract the mass of the d*(2380) and its lower mass bound. With optimized mixing parameters, we find that the mixed current does not change the numerical result significantly.

Abstract:We obtain a relationship between the hierarchies of mixing angles and of masses pertinent to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing matrix and the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) lepton mixing matrix. Using this relationship, we argue that the more severe hierarchy of the charge-$\frac{2}{3}$ quark masses requires that the CKM matrix be close to a unit matrix whereas the milder hierarchy of the neutrino masses allows the PMNS matrix to depart markedly from the CKM matrix and contain large mixing angles of the type that are observed.

Abstract:We study $A_4 \times A_4 \times A_4$ modular symmetric flavor models to realize quark mass hierarchies and mixing angles without fine-tuning. Mass matrices are written in terms of modular forms. At modular fixed points $\tau = i\infty$ and $\omega$, $A_4$ is broken to $Z_3$ residual symmetry. When the modulus $\tau$ is deviated from the fixed points, modular forms show hierarchies depending on their residual charges. Thus, we obtain hierarchical structures in mass matrices. Since we begin with $A_4\times A_4 \times A_4$, the residual symmetry is $Z_3 \times Z_3 \times Z_3$ which can generate sufficient hierarchies to realize quark mass ratios and absolute values of the CKM matrix $|V_{\textrm{CKM}}|$ without fine-tuning. Furthermore, CP violation is studied. We present necessary conditions for CP violation caused by the value of $\tau$. We also show possibilities to realize observed values of the Jarlskog invariant $J_{\textrm{CP}}$, quark mass ratios and CKM matrix $|V_{\textrm{CKM}}|$ simultaneously, if $\mathcal{O}(10)$ adjustments in coefficients of Yukawa couplings are allowed.

Abstract:We present here the most important ideas, equations and solutions for the running of all the quark Yukawa couplings and all the elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, in the approximation of one loop, and up to order $\lambda ^{4}$, where $\lambda \sim 0.22$ is the sine of the Cabibbo angle. Our purpose is to determine what the evolution of these parameters may indicate for the physics of the standard model (SM), the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and for the Double Higgs Model (DHM).
