Abstract:We study the question of calculability of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements within the framework of universal strength for Yukawa couplings (USY). We first classify all solutions leading to $m_u=m_d=0$ within USY and then suggest a highly predictive ansatz where all the moduli of the CKM matrix elements are correctly predicted in terms of quark mass ratios, with no free parameters.

Abstract:Professor Richard H. Dalitz passed away on January 13, 2006. He was almost 81 years old and his outstanding contributions are intimately connected to some of the major breakthroughs of the 20th century in particle and nuclear physics. These outstanding contributions go beyond the Dalitz Plot, Dalitz Pair and CDD poles that bear his name. He pioneered the theoretical study of strange baryon resonances, of baryon spectroscopy in the quark model, and of hypernuclei, to all of which he made lasting contributions. His formulation of the "$\theta-\tau$ puzzle" led to the discovery that parity is not a symmetry of the weak interactions. A brief scientific evaluation of Dalitz's major contributions to particle and nuclear physics is hereby presented, followed by the first comprehensive list of his scientific publications, as assembled from several sources. The list is divided into two categories: the first, main part comprises Dalitz's research papers and reviews, including topics in the history of particle physics, biographies and reminiscences; the second part lists book reviews, public lectures and obituaries authored by Dalitz, and books edited by him. This provides the first necessary step towards a more systematic research of the Dalitz heritage in modern physics. The present 2016 edition updates the original 2006 edition, published in Nucl. Phys. Towards understanding fermion masses and mixings

Abstract:The Standard Model does not constrain the form of the Yukawa matrices and thus the origin of fermion mass hierarchies and mixing pattern remains puzzling. On the other hand, there are intriguing relations between the quark masses and their weak mixing angles, such as the well-known one $\tan \theta_C= \sqrt{m_d/m_s}$ for the Cabibbo angle, which may point towards specific textures of Yukawa matrices hypothesized by Harald Fritzsch at the end of the 70's. Though the original ansatz of Fritzsch is excluded by the experimental data, one can consider its minimal modification which consists in introducing an asymmetry between the 23 and 32 entries in the down-quark Yukawa matrix. We show that this structure is perfectly compatible with the present precision data on quark masses and CKM mixing matrix, and theoretically it can be obtained in the context of $SU(5)$ model with inter-family $SU(3)_H$ symmetry. We also discuss some alternative approaches which could give a natural description of the fermion mass spectrum and weak mixing pattern.

Universal Unitarity Triangle and Physics Beyond the Standard Model

Abstract:We make the simple observation that there exists a universal unitarity triangle for all models, like the SM, the Two Higgs Doublet Models I and II and the MSSM with minimal flavour violation, that do not have any new operators beyond those present in the SM and in which all flavour changing transitions are governed by the CKM matrix with no new phases beyond the CKM phase. This universal triangle can be determined in the near future from the ratio (Delta M)_d/(Delta M)_s and sin(2 beta) measured first through the CP asymmetry in B_d^0 to psi K_S and later in K to pi nu nubar decays. Also suitable ratios of the branching ratios for B to X_{d,s} nu nubar and B_{d,s} to mu^+ mu^- and the angle gamma measured by means of CP asymmetries in B decays can be used for this determination. Comparison of this universal triangle with the non-universal triangles extracted in each model using epsilon, (Delta M)_d and various branching ratios for rare decays will allow to find out in a transparent manner which of these models, if any, is singled out by experiment. A virtue of the universal triangle is that it allows to separate the determination of the CKM parameters from the determination of new parameters present in the extensions of the SM considered here.

Abstract:We analyse, within the framework of universal strength for Yukawa couplings (USY), various structures for the Dirac and Majorana neutrino mass matrices giving rise, through the see-saw mechanism, to a degenerate mass spectrum. A specific USY ansatz is presented for the charged lepton and neutrino effective mass matrix, leading to quasi-degenerate neutrinos and a leptonic mixing matrix which provides a large angle solution for both the atmospheric and solar neutrino problems.

Kaon Theory: 50 Years Later

Abstract:We summarize the status of the Kaon Theory 50 years after the seminal paper of Kobayashi and Maskawa who pointed out that six quarks are necessary to have CP violation in the Standard Model (SM) and presented a parametrization of a $3\times 3$ unitary matrix that after the discovery of the charm quark in 1974 and the $b$ quark in 1977 dominated the field of flavour changing processes. One of the main goals of flavour physics since then was the determination of the four parameters of this matrix, which we will choose here to be $|V_{us}|$, $|V_{cb}|$ and the two angles of the unitarity triangle, $\beta$ and $\gamma$ with $|V_{us}|$ introduced by Cabibbo in 1963. I will summarize recent strategy for determination of these parameters without new physics (NP) infection. It is based on the conjecture of the absence of relevant NP contributions to $\Delta F=2$ processes that indeed can be demonstrated by a negative rapid test: the $|V_{cb}|-\gamma$ plot. This in turn allows to obtain SM predictions for rare $K$ and $B$ decays that are most precise to date. We present strategies for the explanation of the anticipated anomaly in the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and the observed anomalies in $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ transitions that are consistent with our $\Delta F=2$ conjecture. In particular, the absence of NP in the parameter $\varepsilon_K$, still allows for significant NP effects in $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and in rare Kaon decays, moreover in a correlated manner. Similar the absence of NP in $\Delta M_s$ combined with anomalies in $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ transitions hints for the presence of right-handed quark currents. We also discuss how the nature of neutrinos, Dirac vs. Majorana one, can be probed in $K\to\pi\nu\bar\nu$ and $B\to K(K^*)\nu\bar\nu$ decays. The present status of the $\Delta I=1/2$ rule and of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ is summarized.

Update of the Unitarity Triangle Analysis

Abstract:We present the update of the Unitarity Triangle (UT) analysis within the Standard Model (SM) and beyond. Within the SM, combining the direct measurements on sides and angles, the UT turns out to be overconstraint in a consistent way, showing that the CKM matrix is the dominant source of flavour mixing and CP-violation and that New Physics (NP) effects can appear at most as small corrections to the CKM picture. Generalizing the UT analysis to investigate NP effects, constraints on b -> s transitions are also included and both CKM and NP parameters are fitted simultaneously. While no evidence of NP effects is found in K-\bar K and B_d-\bar B_d mixing, in the B_s-\bar B_s mixing an hint of NP is found at the 2.9 \sigma level. The UT analysis beyond the SM also allows us to derive bounds on the coefficients of the most general \Delta F=2 effective Hamiltonian, that can be translated into bounds on the NP scale.

Cabibbo angle anomalies and a global fit to vector-like quarks

Abstract:The most recent determinations of $V_{ud}$ from superallowed beta decays lead to a discrepancy when compared to the value implied by mesonic CKM measurements combined with CKM unitarity. On top of this, improved precision in lattice QCD calculations have revealed another discrepancy between the $V_{us}$ determinations from kaon and pion semi-leptonic decays. The combination of these can be referred to as the Cabibbo angle anomaly, which we find has a significance of around $3\,\sigma$. After summarising the current state of these issues, I will talk about new physics models that modify semi-leptonic decays as potential explanations, and why vector-like quarks in particular appear the most promising candidates. I will then discuss the results of a global fit to various vector-like quark models, and how other constraints are important in determining the most likely explanation. Finally I will touch on future experiments that could shed further light on the situation.

Abstract:We present here the most important ideas, equations and solutions for the running of all the quark Yukawa couplings and all the elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, in the approximation of one loop, and up to order $\lambda ^{4}$, where $\lambda \sim 0.22$ is the sine of the Cabibbo angle. Our purpose is to determine what the evolution of these parameters may indicate for the physics of the standard model (SM), the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and for the Double Higgs Model (DHM).

On the other hand, there are intriguing relations between fermion masses and mixing angles which may point towards specific textures of Yukawa matrices. One of the classic hypothesis is the zero texture proposed by Fritzsch which is, however, excluded by present precision tests since it predicts a too large value of $|V_{cb}|$ as well as a too small value of the ratio $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$. In this paper we discuss a minimal modification which still maintains the six zero entries as in the original Fritzsch ansatz. This modification consists in introducing an asymmetry between the 23 and 32 entries in the down-quark Yukawa matrix. We show that this flavour structure can naturally emerge in the context of models with inter-family $SU(3)_H$ symmetry. We present a detailed analysis of this Fritzsch-like texture by testing its predictions and showing that it is perfectly compatible with the present precision data on quark masses and CKM mixing matrix.

United Quark and Neutrino Mixing Matrices with Universal Pair of CP-Violating Phases

Abstract:The Standard Model quark and neutrino mixing matrices are of independent empirical origin, but they do suggest unification. In this paper I obtained two united one-parameter quark and neutrino mixing matrices inferred from two semi-empirical deviation-from-mass-degeneracy (DMD) flavor rules (quadratic DMD-hierarchy rule and Dirac-Majorana DMD-duality rule) without use of the common exact-flavor-symmetry suggestions for that particular unification problem. One small empirical parameter quantitatively defines the pattern of particle flavor physics. The main predictions are: 1) hierarchical connections between the 2 large solar and atmospheric neutrino mixing angels, and the 2 small quark mixing angels, 2) universal sequence of 14 equality relations to that one-empirical-parameter of the quark and neutrino mixing-matrix parameters, CP-phases and lepton mass ratios, which are free dimensionless constants in the Standard Model, 3) complementarity connections between doubled large neutrino and small quark mixing angles, 4) tentative solution of the CP-violation problem in framework of Standard Model mixing matrix phenomenology by suggesting a universal set of two nonzero values ~58.8 and ~31.2 degrees for Dirac and Majorana CP-violating phases.

Abstract:We report a theoretical derivation of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix parameters and the accompanying mixing angles. These results are arrived at from the exceptional Jordan algebra applied to quark states, and from expressing flavor eigenstates (i.e. left-chiral states) as superposition of mass eigenstates (i.e. the right-chiral states) weighted by square-root of mass. Flavor mixing for quarks is mediated by the square-root mass eigenstates, and the mass ratios used have been derived in earlier work from a left-right symmetric extension of the standard model. This permits a construction of the CKM matrix from first principles. There exist only four normed division algebras, they can be listed as follows - the real numbers $\mathbb{R}$, the complex numbers $\mathbb{C}$, the quaternions $\mathbb{H}$ and the octonions $\mathbb{O}$. The first three algebras are fairly well known; however, octonions as algebra are less studied. Recent research has pointed towards the importance of octonions in the study of high energy physics. Clifford algebras and the standard model are being studied closely. The main advantage of this approach is that the spinor representations of the fundamental fermions can be constructed easily here as the left ideals of the algebra. Also the action of various Spin Groups on these representations too can be studied easily. In this work, we build on some recent advances in the field and try to determine the CKM angles from an algebraic framework. We obtain the mixing angle values as $\theta_{12}=11.093^o, \theta_{13}=0.172^o, \theta_{23}=4.054^o$. In comparison, the corresponding experimentally measured values for these angles are $13.04^o \pm 0.05^o, 0.201^o \pm 0.011^o, 2.38^o \pm 0.06^o $. The agreement of theory with experiment is likely to improve when running of quark masses is taken into account.

$Z_3$ symmetry of the CKM and PMNS matrices

Abstract:We develop for the CKM and PMNS matrices a new representation with special properties. It is obtained by splitting each of these matrices into two rotations by the angle ${\sim}2\pi/3$ and a universal diagonal matrix with elements, which are cubic roots of~1. Such a representation of the CKM and PMNS matrices may indicate the $Z_{3}$ symmetry to be present in the Yukawa sector of the~SM. Identical mathematical structure of the CKM and PMNS matrices is also an extension of the quark-lepton universality. In this approach the CP violation is a natural consequence of the structure of the Yukawa couplings. The CP violating phase is not a fitted parameter and its value is governed by the parameters of two rotations. The parameters of the diagonalizing matrices of the bi-unitary transformation do not exhibit a hierarchy, which means that the origins of the hierarchy of quark masses and of the CKM matrix elements are not the same.

Profiles of the Unitarity Triangle and CP-Violating Phases in the Standard Model and Supersymmetric Theories

Abstract:We report on a comparative study of the profile of the CKM unitarity triangle, and the resulting CP asymmetries in B decays, in the standard model and in several variants of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), characterized by a single phase in the quark flavour mixing matrix. The supersymmetric contributions to the mass differences \Delta M_d, \Delta M_s and to the CP-violating quantity |\epsilon| are, to an excellent approximation, equal to each other in these theories, allowing for a particularly simple way of implementing the resulting constraints on the elements of V_{CKM} from the present knowledge of these quantities. Incorporating the next-to-leading-order corrections and applying the current direct and indirect constraints on the supersymmetric parameters, we find that the predicted ranges of \sin 2 \beta in the standard model and in MSSM models are very similar. However, precise measurements at B-factories and hadron machines may be able to distinguish these theories in terms of the other two CP-violating phases \alpha and \gamma. This is illustrated for some representative values of the supersymmetric contributions in \Delta M_d, \Delta M_s and |\epsilon|.

A Unified Description of Quark and Lepton Mass Matrices in a Universal Seesaw Model

Abstract:In the democratic universal seesaw model, the mass matrices are given by \bar{f}_L m_L F_R + \bar{F}_L m_R f_R + \bar{F}_L M_F F_R (f: quarks and leptons; F: hypothetical heavy fermions), m_L and m_R are universal for up- and down-fermions, and M_F has a structure ({\bf 1}+ b_f X) (b_f is a flavour-dependent parameter, and X is a democratic matrix). The model can successfully explain the quark masses and CKM mixing parameters in terms of the charged lepton masses by adjusting only one parameter, b_f. However, so far, the model has not been able to give the observed bimaximal mixing for the neutrino sector. In the present paper, we consider that M_F in the quark sectors are still "fully" democratic, while M_F in the lepton sectors are partially democratic. Then, the revised model can reasonably give a nearly bimaximal mixing without spoiling the previous success in the quark sectors.

Abstract:We explore, in a concrete example, to which extent new particle mass determinations are practicable with LHC data. Our chosen example is that of Yukawa-unified SUSY GUTs, whose viability has been recently studied for two general patterns of soft SUSY-breaking terms. We note that both patterns of SUSY spectra do not admit long decay chains, which would make it possible to determine the masses of the SUSY particles involved using endpoints or mass relations. We thus take the so-called mT2-kink method as our key strategy, since it does not rely on the presence of long decay chains. We then discuss a procedure allowing to determine the masses of the gluino, of the lightest chargino as well as of the first two neutralinos and, for the scenario where a stop is lighter than the gluino, the mass of the light stop too. Our worked example of Yukawa-unified SUSY GUTs may offer a useful playground for dealing with other theories which predict similar patterns of SUSY spectra.

SUSY GUTs with Yukawa unification: a go/no-go study using FCNC processes

Abstract:We address the viability of exact Yukawa unification in the context of general SUSY GUTs with universal soft-breaking sfermion and gaugino mass terms at the GUT scale. We find that this possibility is challenged, unless the squark spectrum is pushed well above the limits allowed by naturalness. This conclusion is assessed through a global fit using electroweak observables and quark flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes. The problem is mostly the impossibility of accommodating simultaneously the bottom mass and the BR(B --> Xs gamma), after the stringent CDF upper bound on the decay Bs --> mu^+ mu^- is taken into account, and under the basic assumption that the b --> s gamma amplitude have like sign with respect to the Standard Model one, as indicated by the B --> Xs l^+ l^- data. With the same strategy, we also consider the possibility of relaxing Yukawa unification to b - tau Yukawa unification. We find that with small departures from the condition tan beta ~= 50, holding when Yukawa unification is exact, the mentioned tension is substantially relieved. We emphasize that in the region where fits are successful the lightest part of the SUSY spectrum is basically fixed by the requirements of b - tau unification and the applied FCNC constraints. As such, it is easily falsifiable once the LHC turns on.

Abstract:The origins of Standard Model (SM) quark/lepton masses and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) mixing pattern are described in an ${\rm SU}(8)$ theory, where three-generational SM fermions transform differently. A realistic symmetry breaking pattern with three intermediate scales is described, along which all vectorlike electrically charged fermions become massive. A set of $d=5$ operators that explicitly break the emergent global symmetries are analyzed to generate the observed three-generational SM quark/lepton mass hierarchies as well as the CKM mixing pattern. All SM flavors are identified in the spectrum.

Successful Yukawa structures in Warped Extra Dimensions

Abstract:For a RS model, with SM fields in the bulk and the Higgs boson on the TeV-brane, we suggest two specific structures for the Yukawa couplings, one based on a permutation symmetry and the other on the Universal Strength of Yukawa couplings hypothesis (USY). In USY, all Yukawa couplings have equal strength and the difference in the Yukawa structure lies in some complex phase. In both scenarios, all Yukawa couplings are of the same order of magnitude. Thus, the main features of the fermion hierarchies are explained through the RS geometrical mechanism, and not because some Yukawa coupling is extremely small. We find that the RS model is particularly appropriate to incorporate the suggested Yukawa configurations. Indeed, the RS geometrical mechanism of fermion locations along the extra dimension, combined with the two Yukawa scenarios, reproduces all the present experimental data on fermion masses and mixing angles. It is quite remarkable that in the USY case, only two complex phases of definite value +-Pi/2 are sufficient to generate the known neutrino mass differences, while at same time, permitting large leptonic mixing in agreement with experiment.
