Abstract:The differences between the magnetic properties in the normal state of the underdoped and optimally doped high-T-c cuprates are discussed based on a phenomenological model, in which the effect of the spin gap on the magnetic susceptibility is included. The closely related temperature dependences of the uniform static spin susceptibility, the spin-lattice relaxation rate at the planar O sites (17)(T1T)(-1) and Cu sites (63)(T1T)(-1), and the ratio of (63)(T1T)(-1) to the squared Gaussian relaxation rate at the planar Cu sites T-2G(-2) are considered. Abstract:A fundamental obstacle to understanding high-temperature superconducting cuprates is that the occurrence of superconductivity hinders the observation of the normal-state properties at low temperature. One important property illustrating this issue is the spin susceptibility: its decrease upon cooling in the normal state is considered as evidence of pseudogap behaviour. However, unambiguous interpretation of this decrease has been impossible, as the crucial low-temperature data inevitably reflect the superconducting pairing rather than the normal state. Here we measure the spin susceptibility of YBa 2 Cu 3 O y at low temperature while suppressing superconductivity in high magnetic field. We found that there are two thermally activated contributions, each of which comes from a different gap, alongside a residual component due to gapless excitations. We relate these two distinct gaps to short-range charge density waves and to the formation of singlets, as occurs in certain quantum spin systems. Both phenomena contribute to the pseudogap at low temperature, supplementing the short-lived antiferromagnetism that initiates pseudogap behaviour at high temperatures. We, therefore, propose that the pseudogap should be regarded as a composite property and that, when not undergoing spin-stripe ordering, underdoped cuprates tend to form short-range spin singlets.

Abstract:A major obstacle to understanding high-Tc cuprates is that superconductivity precludes observing normal-state properties at low temperatures. One prime example is the normal-state spin susceptibility: although its decrease upon cooling far above Tc typifies pseudogap behavior, its behavior at low temperatures is generally unknown. Here, our measurements in high magnetic fields expose the spin susceptibility of YBa2Cu3Oy down to low temperatures. Even though superconductivity is suppressed by the field, we uncover two thermally-activated contributions alongside a residual susceptibility at T=0 due to gapless excitations. We relate these two distinct gaps to short-range charge-density waves and to the formation of spin singlets similar to those found in certain quantum spin systems. These phenomena thus collectively contribute to the pseudogap in the spin susceptibility at low temperature, supplementing short-lived antiferromagnetism known to initiate pseudogap behavior at high temperatures. We therefore propose that the pseudogap should be regarded as a composite property.

Abstract:The presence of a normal state spectral (pseudo) gap at the superconducting transition temperature in the underdoped cuprates has important implications for the associated superconducting phase. We argue that this normal state pseudogap derives from pairing fluctuations, which necessarily persist below Tc and which have important implications on the superconducting state. Our Greens function approach, based on the equation of motion method, can be viewed as a natural extension of BCS theory for sufficiently strong pairing interaction, suggested by the short coherence length of the cuprates. In addition to the usual fermionic excitations, there are also incoherent (but not pre-formed) pairs of finite center of mass momentum which must be self consistently incorporated in computing Tc and other superconducting properties, such as the superfluid density and the Josephson critical current. Finally, we discuss some of the experimental implications of our theory for the cuprates.

Abstract:The closely related temperature dependences of both magnetic and charge transport properties for underdoped high-T-c cuprates are investigated. The spin pseudogap is suggested to follow from the deviation of the chemical potential away from the van Hove singularity (vHs) as the system goes into the underdoped regime. A correlation between the anomalous transport properties and the opening of the spin pesudogap is demonstrated.

Abstract:Multiferroics with coplanar magnetic order are discussed in terms of a superfluid condensate, with special emphasis on spin supercurrents created by phase gradients of the condensate and the effect of external electric fields. By drawing the analogy to a superconducting condensate, phenomena such as persistent currents in rings, the Little-Parks effect, fluxoid quantization, the Josephson-like effect through spin domain walls, and interference behavior in a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID)-like geometry are analyzed for coplanar multiferroics.

Abstract:We review the recent progress in understanding the properties of spin-split superconductors under non-equilibrium conditions. Recent experiments and theories demonstrate a rich variety of transport phenomena occurring in devices based on such materials that suggest direct applications in thermoelectricity, low-dissipative spintronics, radiation detection and sensing. We discuss different experimental situations and present a theoretical framework based on quantum kinetic equations. Within this framework we provide an accurate description of the non-equilibrium distribution of charge, spin and energy, which are the relevant non-equilibrium modes, in different hybrid structures. We also review experiments on spin-split superconductors and show how transport measurements reveal the properties of the non-equilibrium modes and their mutual coupling. We discuss in detail spin injection and diffusion and very large thermoelectric effects in spin-split superconductors.

Abstract:The Fermi surface in the state of cuprates is highly unusual because it appears to consist of disconnected segments called arcs. Their very existence challenges the traditional concept of a Fermi surface as closed contours of gapless excitations in momentum space. The length of the arcs in the pseudogap state was thought to linearly increase with temperature, pointing to the existence of a nodal liquid state below T*. These results were interpreted as an interplay of a d-wave pairing gap and strong scattering. Understanding the properties of the arcs is a pre-requisite to understanding the origin of the pseudogap and the physics of the cuprates. Here we use a novel approach to detect the energy gaps based on the temperature dependence of the density of states. With a significantly improved sensitivity, we demonstrate that the arcs form rapidly at T* and their length remains surprisingly constant over an extended temperature range between T* and Tarc, consistent with the presence of an ordered state below T*. These arcs span fixed points in the momentum space defining a set of wave vectors, which are the fingerprints of the ordered state that causes the pseudogap.

Abstract:We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and a new quantitative approach based on the partial density of states to study properties of seemingly disconnected portions of the Fermi surface (FS) that are present in the pseudogap state of cuprates called Fermi arcs. We find that the normal state FS collapses very abruptly into Fermi arcs at the pseudogap temperature (T*). Surprisingly, the length of the Fermi arcs remains constant over an extended temperature range between T* and T(pair), consistent with the presence of an ordered state below T*. These arcs collapse again at the temperature below which pair formation occurs (T(pair)) either to a point or a very short arc, whose length is limited by our experimental resolution. The tips of the arcs span between points defining a set of wave vectors in momentum space, which are the fingerprints of the ordered state that causes the pseudogap.
Quantum oscillations in the hole-doped cuprates and the confinement of spinons

Abstract:A long standing problem in the study of the under-hole-doped cuprates has been the description of the Fermi surfaces underlying the high magnetic field quantum oscillations, and their connection to the higher temperature pseudogap metal. Harrison and Sebastian (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1103.4181" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1103.4181">arXiv:1103.4181</a>) proposed that the pseudogap `Fermi arcs' are reconstructed into an electron pocket by field-induced charge density wave order. But computations on such a model (Zhang and Mei, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1411.2098" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1411.2098">arXiv:1411.2098</a>) show an unobserved additional oscillation frequency from a Fermi surface arising from the backsides of the hole pockets completing the Fermi arcs. We describe a transition from a fractionalized Fermi liquid (FL*) model of the pseudogap metal, to a metal with bi-directional charge density wave order without fractionalization. We show that the confinement of the fermionic spinon excitations of the FL* across this transition can eliminate the unobserved oscillation frequency.

Abstract:Theories of the origin of superconductivity in cuprates are dependent on an understanding of their normal state which exhibits various competing orders. Transport and thermodynamic measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ show signatures of a quantum critical point, including a peak in the electronic specific heat $C$ versus doping $p$, near the doping $p^{\star}$ where the pseudogap collapses. The fundamental nature of the fluctuations associated with this peak is unclear. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to show that close to $T_c$ and near $p^{\star}$, there are very-low-energy collective spin excitations with characteristic energies $\hbar \Gamma \approx$~5 meV. Cooling and applying a 8.8~T magnetic field creates a mixed state with a stronger magnetic response below 10~meV. We conclude that the low-energy spin-fluctuations are due to the collapse of the pseudogap combined with an underlying tendency to magnetic order. We show that the large specific heat near $p^{\star}$ can be understood in terms of collective spin fluctuations. The spin fluctuations we measure exist across the superconducting phase diagram and may be related to the strange metal behaviour observed in overdoped cuprates.

Superfluid spin transport in ferro- and antiferromagnets

Abstract:This paper focuses on spin superfluid transport, observation of which was recently reported in antiferromagnet Cr$_2$O$_3$ [Yuan et al., Sci. Adv. 4, eaat1098 (2018)]. This paper analyzes the role of dissipation in transformation of spin current injected with incoherent magnons to a superfluid spin current near the interface where spin is injected. The Gilbert damping parameter in the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert theory does not describe dissipation properly, and the dissipation parameters are calculated from the Boltzmann equation for magnons scattered by defects. The two-fluid theory is developed similar to the two-fluid theory for superfluids. This theory shows that the influence of temperature variation in bulk on the superfluid spin transport (bulk Seebeck effect) is weak at low temperatures. The scenario that the results of Yuan et al. are connected with the Seebeck effect at the interface between the spin detector and the sample is also discussed. The Landau criterion for an antiferromagnet put in a magnetic field is derived from the spectrum of collective spin modes. The Landau instability starts in the gapped mode earlier than in the Goldstone gapless mode, in contrast to easy-plane ferromagnets where the Goldstone mode becomes unstable. The structure of the magnetic vortex in the geometry of the experiment is determined. The vortex core has the skyrmion structure with finite magnetization component normal to the magnetic field. This magnetization creates stray magnetic fields around the exit point of the vortex line from the sample, which can be used for experimental detection of vortices.

Fermi-liquid Effects in the Gapless State of Marginally Thin Superconducting Films

Abstract:We present low-temperature tunneling density-of-states measurements in Al films in high parallel magnetic fields. The thickness range of the films, t=6-9 nm, was chosen so that the orbital and Zeeman contributions to their parallel critical fields were comparable. In this quasispin paramagnetically limited configuration, the field produces a significant suppression of the gap, and at high fields the gapless state is reached. By comparing measured and calculated tunneling spectra we are able to extract the value of the antisymmetric Fermi-liquid parameter G(0) and thereby deduce the quasiparticle density dependence of the effective parameter G(eff)(0) across the gapless state.
Spin-fluctuation glue disfavors high-critical temperature of superconductivity?

Abstract:Antiferromagnetic fluctuations are believed to be a promising glue to drive high-temperature superconductivity especially in cuprates. Here, we perform a close inspection of the superconducting mechanism from spin fluctuations in the Eliashberg framework by employing a typical one-band model on a square lattice. While spin fluctuations can eventually drive superconductivity as is well established, we find that the superconducting tendency is suppressed substantially by a seemingly negligible contribution from a small momentum transfer far away from (pi,pi). This suppression comes from phase frustration of the pairing gap and is expected to be a general feature due to the repulsive pairing interaction of spin fluctuations. Furthermore, we find that the momentum dependence of the pairing gap largely deviates from the functional form of cos kx - cos ky, although this form is well established in cuprate superconductors. We argue that an instantaneous magnetic interaction plays the important role to understand high-critical temperature of superconductivity as well as the momentum dependence of the pairing gap.

Abstract:A brief review of microscopic studies of high-Tc superconductors HgBa2CuO4+d and HgBa2CaCu2O6+d is presented. The topics concerned are the pseudo spin-gap, the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations near the quantum critical point, and the mechanism of the high Tc via NMR. The crystal structure with the flat CuO2 plane, two-dimensional electrical resistivity, Cu NQR, NMR experimental results are discussed.

Abstract:We provide strong numerical evidence, using improved variational wave functions, for a ground state with vanishing spin gap in the spin-1/2 quantum Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice. Starting from the algebraic U(1) Dirac spin liquid state proposed by Ran et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 117205 (2007)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.98.117205] and iteratively applying a few Lanczos steps, we compute the lowest S=2 excitation constructed by exciting spinons close to the Dirac nodes. Our results are compatible with a vanishing spin gap in the thermodynamic limit and in consonance with a power-law decay of long distance spin-spin correlations in real space. The competition with a gapped (topological) spin liquid is discussed.
