Abstract:Unconventional superconductors are often characterized by numerous competing and even intertwined orders in their phase diagrams. The fluctuations associated with these orders may provide the exotic pairing glue that underlies their high-temperature superconductivity. Helimagnet MnP, the first Mn-based superconductor under pressure, lacks high rotational symmetry. However, our resonant soft x-ray scattering experiment discovers novel helical orbital density wave (ODW) orders in MnP and reveals intertwined ordering phenomena. In particular, an ODW forms with half the period of the spin order and fully develops slightly above the spin ordering temperature, which resembles the behaviors of the nematic phase of the iron-based superconductors. Moreover, we find that their domains develop simultaneously, yet the spin order domains are larger than those of the ODW; and they cooperatively produce another ODW with 1/3 the period of the spin order. These observations provide a comprehensive picture of the intertwined orders in this three-dimensional, low-symmetry system and shed light on the understanding of its superconducting mechanism.
Coexistence of Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in Iron Based Pnictides: a Time Resolved Magnetooptical Study.

Abstract:Ferromagnetism and superconductivity are antagonistic phenomena. Their coexistence implies either a modulated ferromagnetic order parameter on a lengthscale shorter than the superconducting coherence length or a weak exchange coupling between the itinerant superconducting electrons and the localized ordered spins. In some iron based pnictide superconductors the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity has been clearly demonstrated. The nature of the coexistence, however, remains elusive since no clear understanding of the spin structure in the superconducting state has been reached and the reports on the coupling strength are controversial. We show, by a direct optical pump-probe experiment, that the coupling is weak, since the transfer of the excess energy from the itinerant electrons to ordered localized spins is much slower than the electron-phonon relaxation, implying the coexistence without the short-lengthscale ferromagnetic order parameter modulation. Remarkably, the polarization analysis of the coherently excited spin wave response points towards a simple ferromagnetic ordering of spins with two distinct types of ferromagnetic domains.
P-wave pairing near a spin-split Josephson junction

Abstract:Superconductivity and magnetism are competing effects that can coexist in certain regimes. Their co-existence leads to unexpected new behaviors that include the onset of exotic electron pair mechanisms and topological phases. In this work, we study the properties of a Josephson junction between two spin-split superconductors. The spin-splitting in the superconductors can arise from either the coupling to a ferromagnetic material or an external magnetic field. The properties of the junction are dominated by the Andreev bound states that are also split. One of these states can cross the superconductor's Fermi level, leading to a ground state transition characterized by a suppressed supercurrent. We interpret the supercurrent blockade as coming from a dominance of p-wave pairing close to the junction, where electrons at both sides of the junction pair. To support this interpretation, we analyze the different pairing channels and show that p-wave pairing is favored in the case where the magnetization of the two superconductors is parallel and suppressed in the anti-parallel case. We also analyze the noise spectrum that shows signatures of the ground state transition in the form of an elevated zero-frequency noise.

Abstract:In the quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) copper- and iron-based superconductors, the onset of superconductivity is accompanied by a prominent peak in the magnetic spectrum at momenta close to the wave-vector of the nearby antiferromagnetic state. Such a peak is well described in terms of a spin resonance mode, i.e., a spin-1 exciton theoretically predicted for quasi-2D superconductors with a sign-changing gap. The same theories, however, indicate that such a resonance mode should be absent in a three-dimensional (3D) system with a spherical Fermi surface. This raises the question of the fate of the spin resonance mode in layered unconventional superconductors that are not strongly anisotropic, such as certain heavy-fermion compounds and potentially the newly discovered nickelate superconductor NdNiO2 . Here, we use the random phase approximation to calculate the dynamical spin susceptibility of 3D superconductors with a dx2−y2 -wave gap symmetry and corrugated cylindrical-like Fermi surfaces. By varying the out-of-plane hopping anisotropy tz/t , we demonstrate that the appearance of a spin resonance mode is determined by the topology of the hot lines, i.e., lines on the Fermi surface that are connected by the magnetic wave vector. For an in-plane antiferromagnetic wave vector, the hot lines undergo a topological transition from open lines to closed loops at a critical tz/t value. The closed hot lines cross the nodal superconducting lines, making the spin resonance mode overdamped and incoherent. In contrast, for an out-of-plane antiferromagnetic wave vector, the hot lines remain open and the spin resonance mode remains sharp. We discuss the experimental implications of our results for the out-of-plane dispersion of the spin resonance mode and, more generally, for inelastic neutron scattering experiments on unconventional superconductors. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.106.014511 ©2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:Multiband superconductors have featured one of the main challenges to achieve a comprehensive understanding of unconventional superconductivity. Here, the multiband character is studied separately as orbital and sublattice degrees of freedom, as they have different effects for the superconducting and magnetic or charge orders. We build on the framework of the matrix random-phase approximation (RPA), which accounts for the RPA Feynman diagrams and also vertex corrections, to treat the electron-electron interactions in an off-site degenerate Hubbard model. As a result, systems without a sublattice degree of freedom tend to be dominated by spin fluctuations, while systems with multiple sublattice sites and orbitals have the charge fluctuations favored. Finally, we explicitly demonstrate that the known suppression of the superconducting pairing strength $\lambda$ by spin fluctuations from repulsive interactions at zero momentum transfer $\boldsymbol{q}$ is countered by the finite-$\boldsymbol{q}$ pairing, which always improves $\lambda$.

Anomalous Zeeman response in coexisting phase of superconductivity and spin-density wave as a probe of extended $s$-wave pairing structure in ferro-pnictide

Abstract:In several members of the ferro-pnictides, spin density wave (SDW) order coexists with superconductivity over a range of dopings. In this letter we study the anomalous magnetic Zeeman response of this coexistence state and show that it can be used to confirm the extended s-wave gap structure as well as structure of superconducting (SC) gap in coexisting phase. On increasing the field, a strongly anisotropic reduction of SC gap is found. The anisotropy is directly connected to the gap structure of superconducting phase. The signature of this effect in quasiparticle interference measured by STM, as well as heat transport in magnetic field is discussed. For the compounds with the nodal SC gap we show that the nodes are removed upon formation of SDW. Interestingly the size of the generated gap in the originally nodal areas is anisotropic in the position of the nodes over the Fermi surface in direct connection with the form of SC pairing.

Abstract:Although the origin of high temperature superconductivity in the iron pnictides is still under debate, it is widely believed that magnetic interactions or fluctuations have a crucial role in triggering Cooper pairing. A key issue regarding the iron pnictide phase diagram is whether long-range magnetic order can coexist with superconductivity microscopically. Here we use scanning tunnelling microscopy to investigate the local electronic structure of underdoped NaFe1-xCoxAs near the spin density wave and superconducting phase boundary. Spatially resolved spectroscopy directly reveals both the spin density wave and superconducting gaps at the same atomic location, providing compelling evidence for the microscopic coexistence of the two phases. The strengths of the two orders are shown to anti-correlate with each other, indicating the competition between them. This work implies that Cooper pairing in the iron pnictides can occur when portions of the Fermi surface are already gapped by the spin density wave order.

Abstract:High-temperature superconductivity in iron-arsenic materials (pnictides) near an anti-ferromagnetic phase raises the possibility of spin-fluctuation-mediated pairing. However, the interplay between antiferromagnetic fluctuations and superconductivity remains unclear in the underdoped regime, which is closer to the antiferromagnetic phase. Here we report that the superconducting gap of underdoped pnictides scales linearly with the transition temperature, and that a distinct pseudogap coexisting with the superconducting gap develops on under-doping. This pseudogap occurs on Fermi surface sheets connected by the antiferromagnetic wavevector, where the superconducting pairing is stronger as well, suggesting that antiferromagnetic fluctuations drive both the pseudogap and superconductivity. Interestingly, we found that the pseudogap and the spectral lineshape vary with the Fermi surface quasi-nesting conditions in a fashion that shares similarities with the nodal-antinodal dichotomous behaviour observed in underdoped copper oxide superconductors.
Quantum phase transitions in magnetism and superconductivity: emergent spin topology seen with neutrons

Abstract:Magnetic spins and charges interact strongly in high-temperature superconductors. New physics emerges as layers of copper oxide are tuned towards the boundary of the superconducting phase. As the pseudogap increases the characteristic spin excitation energy decreases. We show that our well-annealed YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO6+x) single crystals are orthorhombic and superconducting but not antiferromagnetically ordered. Near the critical concentration for superconductivity for x = 0.35 the spins fluctuate on two energy scales, one a relaxational spin response at ~2 meV and the other a slow central mode that is resolution-limited in energy (<0.08 meV) but broad in momentum. The gradual formation on cooling of a central mode over a range of momenta suggests that the spin ground state from which coherent superconducting pairing emerges may be quantum disordered. We show that YBCO6.35 adopts a homogeneous state that consists of highly-organized frozen sub-critical three-dimensional spin correlations. The continuous spin evolution indicates that a single quantum state occurs in contrast to claims from site-based probes that lightly doped YBCO undergoes a transition to antiferromagnetic Bragg order followed by a sharp transition to a cluster glass phase. For x = 0.35, where Tc = 18 K is reduced to 1/5 of Tcmax, the spin ground state is reached without a sharp transition and consists of short correlations extending over only 8 Angstrom between cells and 42 Angstrom within the planes. Polarized neutrons show the angular spin distribution to be isotropic unlike the AF insulator. Since moment is conserved we interpret this as evidence for hole-induced spin rotations rather than decay.

Anisotropic Thermal Transport in Superconductors with Coexisting Spin Density Waves

Abstract:Thermal conductivity measurements can provide key and experimentally verifiable insight into the electronic transport of unconventional superconductors. In this work, electronic thermal transport of two-dimensional tight-binding metallic systems with coexisting $d$-wave superconducting (SC) and antiferromagnetic spin density wave (SDW) orders with nesting vector $\mathbf{Q} = (\pi/2,\pi/2)$ or $(\pi,0)$ are considered. The coexisting SC and SDW orders are modelled at the mean-field level. Thermal conductivities are numerically calculated within Boltzmann kinetic theory in the weak impurity scattering (Born) limit. These SDW nesting vectors are chosen for their unique property of reconstructing the Fermi surface (FS) parallel to $\mathbf{Q}$ and preserving the metallic FS perpendicular to $\mathbf{Q}$. This leads to anisotropic electronic thermal conductivities parallel and perpendicular to $\mathbf{Q}$, which also depend on the presence or absence of additional gapless excitations exclusive to the coexistence phase. It was found that the $\mathbf{Q} = (\pi/2,\pi/2)$ and $(\pi,0)$ SDW systems exhibit equivalent electron transport relative to $\mathbf{Q}$. These systems also had equivalent electron transport when coexisting with a $d$-wave SC gap when $\Delta_{\mathbf{k}}$ had the same symmetry class under translations of $\mathbf{Q}$.

Abstract:Abstract Topological semimetals are three dimensional materials with symmetry-protected massless bulk excitations. As a special case, Weyl nodal-line semimetals are realized in materials having either no inversion or broken time-reversal symmetry and feature bulk nodal lines. The 111-family, including LaNiSi, LaPtSi and LaPtGe materials (all lacking inversion symmetry), belongs to this class. Here, by combining muon-spin rotation and relaxation with thermodynamic measurements, we find that these materials exhibit a fully-gapped superconducting ground state, while spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry at the superconducting transition. Since time-reversal symmetry is essential for protecting the normal-state topology, its breaking upon entering the superconducting state should remarkably result in a topological phase transition. By developing a minimal model for the normal-state band structure and assuming a purely spin-triplet pairing, we show that the superconducting properties across this family can be described accurately. Our results demonstrate that the 111 materials reported here provide an ideal test-bed for investigating the rich interplay between the exotic properties of Weyl nodal-line fermions and unconventional superconductivity.

Thermal Transport in Superconductors with coexisting Spin Density Wave Order

Abstract:We study thermal transport in a two-dimensional system with coexisting $s$- or $d$-wave Superconducting (SC) and Spin Density Wave (SDW) orders. We analyse the nature of coexistence phase in a tight-binding square lattice with $\mathbf{Q}=(\pi,\pi)$ SDW ordering. The electronic thermal conductivity is computed within the framework of the Boltzmann kinetic theory, using Born approximation for the impurity scattering collision integral. We describe the influence of the Fermi surface (FS) topology, the competition between the SC and SDW order parameters, the presence or absence of zero energy excitations in the coexistence phase, on the low temperature behavior of thermal conductivity of the various paring states. We present qualitative analytical, and fully numerical results that show that the heat transport signatures of various SC states emerging from collinear SDW order are quite distinct, and depend on the symmetry properties of the SC order parameter under translation by the SDW nesting vector $\mathbf{Q}$. {A combination of $(\pi,\pi)$-SDW and the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing state results in fully gapped excitations, whereas $(\pi,\pi)$-SDW co-existing with either $d_{xy}$ or $s$-wave pairing states may always have gapless excitations. There appear special stable Dirac nodal points that are not gapped by the SC order in the coexistence phase, resulting in finite residual heat conductivity.

Superconductivity of anomalous pseudospin

Abstract:Spin-orbit coupling driven by broken inversion symmetry ($I$) is known to lead to unusual magnetic response of superconductors, including extremely large critical fields for spin-singlet superconductors. This unusual response is also known to appear in materials that have $I$, provided there is local $I$-breaking: fermions participating in superconductivity reside on crystal sites that lack $I$. Here we show that this unusual response exists even when the crystal sites preserve $I$. Indeed, we argue that the symmetry of Kramers degenerate fermionic pseudospin is more relevant than the local crystal site symmetry. We examine and classify non-symmorphic materials with momentum space spin-textures that exhibit an anomalous pseudospin with different symmetry properties than usual spin-1/2. We find that this anomalous pseudospin does not depend on the existence of local $I$ breaking crystal sites and it optimizes the unusual magnetic response traditionally associated with locally noncentrosymmetric superconductors, dramatically extending the range of relevant materials. We further show this anomalous pseudospin leads to fully gapped `nodal' superconductors and provides additional insight into the breakdown of Blount's theorem for pseudospin triplet superconductors. We apply our results to UPt$_3$, BiS$_2$-based superconductors, Fe-based superconductors, and paramagnetic UCoGe.

Abstract:We explore the relationship among the magnetic ordering in real space, the resulting spin texture on the Fermi surface, and the related superconducting gap structure in noncollinear antiferromagnetic metals without spin-orbit coupling. Via a perturbative approach, we show that noncollinear magnetic ordering in a metal can generate momentum-dependent spin texture on its Fermi surface, even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, if the metal has more than three sublattices in its magnetic unit cell. Thus, our theory naturally extends the idea of altermagnetism to noncollinear spin structures. When superconductivity is developed in a magnetic metal, as the gap-opening condition is strongly constrained by the spin texture, the nodal structure of the superconducting state is also enforced by the magnetism-induced spin texture. Taking the noncollinear antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice as a representative example, we demonstrate how the Fermi surface spin texture induced by noncollinear antiferromagnetism naturally leads to odd-parity spin-triplet superconductivity with nontrivial topological properties. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.196602 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The characteristics of Fe-based superconductors are manifested in their electronic, magnetic properties, and pairing symmetry of the Cooper pair, but the latter remain to be explored. Usually in these materials, superconductivity coexists and competes with magnetic order, giving unconventional pairing mechanisms. We report on the results of the bulk magnetization measurements in the superconducting state and the low-temperature specific heat down to 0.4 K for BaFe2-xNixAs2 single crystals. The electronic specific heat displays a pronounced anomaly at the superconducting transition temperature and a small residual part at low temperatures in the superconducting state. The normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient increases with Ni doping for x = 0.092, 0.096, and 0.10, which illustrates the competition between magnetism and superconductivity. Our analysis of the temperature dependence of the superconducting-state specific heat and the London penetration depth provides strong evidence for a two-band s-wave order parameter. Further, the data of the London penetration depth calculated from the lower critical field follow an exponential temperature dependence, characteristic of a fully gapped superconductor. These observations clearly show that the superconducting gap in the nearly optimally doped compounds is nodeless.

Abstract:Spatial 4a x 4a modulations, with a the lattice constant of CuO_2 planes, or the so called checkerboards can arise from double-Q spin density wave (SDW) with Q_1 = (pm pi/a, pm 3 pi/4a) and Q_2 = (pm 3 pi/4a, pm pi/a). When multi-Q pair density wave, that is, the condensation of d gamma-wave Cooper pairs with zero total momenta, pm 2Q_1, pm 2Q_2, pm 4Q_1, pm 4Q_2, and so on is induced by the SDW, gaps can have fine structures similar to those of the so called zero-temperature pseudogaps.

Abstract:We discuss transport properties of fully spin-polarized triplet superconductors, where only electrons of one spin component (along a certain axis) are paired. Due to the structure of the order parameter space, wherein phase and spin rotations are intertwined, a configuration where the superconducting phase winds by $4\pi$ in space is topologically equivalent to a configuration with no phase winding. This opens the possibility of supercurrent relaxation by a smooth deformation of the order parameter, where the order parameter remains non-zero at any point in space throughout the entire process. During the process, a spin texture is formed. We discuss the conditions for such processes to occur and their physical consequences. In particular, we show that when a voltage is applied, they lead to an unusual alternating-current Josephson effect whose period is an integer multiple of the usual Josephson period. These conclusions are substantiated in a simple time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model for the dynamics of the order parameter. One of the potential applications of our analysis is for moiré systems, such as twisted bilayer and double bilayer graphene, where superconductivity is found in the vicinity of ferromagnetism.

Abstract:We present electron-tunneling spectroscopy of slightly overdoped Bi2212 single crystals at low temperature using a break-junction technique. Below Tc, we observe, at least, two different superconducting gaps. We show that (i) the largest superconducting gap occurs due to pairing of spinons; (ii) the second superconducting gap has the d-wave symmetry; (iii) the d-wave gap is smaller than the spinon gap, however, predominant and occurs due to pairing of fermionic excitations carrying charge; (iv) the spinon gap has either a s-wave or (s+d) mixed symmetry with the maximum located in (p, p) direction on the Fermi surface. It is possible that there exists the third superconducting gap having a g-wave symmetry, which is approximately twice smaller in magnitude than the d-wave gap. Thus, there are two different types of superconductivity and two different types of carriers in Bi2212.
