Abstract:As a high-tech strategic emerging comprehensive industry, the nuclear industry is committed to the research, production, and processing of nuclear fuel, as well as the development and utilization of nuclear energy. Nowadays, the nuclear industry has made remarkable progress in the application fields of nuclear weapons, nuclear power, nuclear medical treatment, radiation processing, and so on. With the development of artificial intelligence and the proposal of "Industry 4.0", more and more artificial intelligence technologies are introduced into the nuclear industry chain to improve production efficiency, reduce operation cost, improve operation safety, and realize risk avoidance. Meanwhile, deep learning, as an important technology of artificial intelligence, has made amazing progress in theoretical and applied research in the nuclear industry, which vigorously promotes the development of informatization, digitization, and intelligence of the nuclear industry. In this paper, we first simply comb and analyze the intelligent demand scenarios in the whole industrial chain of the nuclear industry. Then, we discuss the data types involved in the nuclear industry chain. After that, we investigate the research status of deep learning in the application fields corresponding to different data types in the nuclear industry. Finally, we discuss the limitation and unique challenges of deep learning in the nuclear industry and the future direction of the intelligent nuclear industry.

Abstract:As a form of clean energy, nuclear energy has unique advantages compared to other energy sources in the present era, where low-carbon policies are being widely advocated. The exponential growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in recent decades has resulted in new opportunities and challenges in terms of improving the safety and economics of nuclear reactors. This study briefly introduces modern AI algorithms such as machine learning, deep learning, and evolutionary computing. Furthermore, several studies on the use of AI techniques for nuclear reactor design optimization as well as operation and maintenance (O&M) are reviewed and discussed. The existing obstacles that prevent the further fusion of AI and nuclear reactor technologies so that they can be scaled to real-world problems are classified into two categories: (1) data issues: insufficient experimental data increases the possibility of data distribution drift and data imbalance; (2) black-box dilemma: methods such as deep learning have poor interpretability. Finally, this study proposes two directions for the future fusion of AI and nuclear reactor technologies: (1) better integration of domain knowledge with data-driven approaches to reduce the high demand for data and improve the model performance and robustness; (2) promoting the use of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) technologies to enhance the transparency and reliability of the model. In addition, causal learning warrants further attention owing to its inherent ability to solve out-of-distribution generalization (OODG) problems.

Abstract:This paper explores the intersection between artificial intelligence and nuclear energy, shedding light on the intriguing scenario when these two sectors jointly consturct. Through the application of both full-sample and sub-sample methodologies, this study identifies the time-dependent interrelationships between China's artificial intelligence index (AI) and nuclear energy indicator (NUC). The quantitative analysis presents that AI's influence on nuclear energy is twofold. On one hand, AI contributes positively by acting as a catalyst and enhancing safety measures in the nuclear sector. On the other, the impact might be perceived negatively, primarily when cost-effective alternative energy sources overshadow the benefits of nuclear energy. Additionally, the positive effect of NUC on AI highlights the benefits derived from nuclear's expansive and consistent energy output, catering efficiently to AI's substantial energy demands. In essence, AI and NUC are found to be complementary, with each having the potential to propel the other forward. This reciprocity paves the way for a synergistic relationship, promising mutual benefits. The study introduces a fresh perspective on the co-evolution of energy and technology, offering thought-provoking recommendations aimed at cultivating the collaborative growth of AI and NUC towards a common good.

Exploding AI Power Use: an Opportunity to Rethink Grid Planning and Management

Abstract:The unprecedented rapid growth of computing demand for AI is projected to increase global annual datacenter (DC) growth from 7.2% to 11.3%. We project the 5-year AI DC demand for several power grids and assess whether they will allow desired AI growth (resource adequacy). If not, several "desperate measures" -- grid policies that enable more load growth and maintain grid reliability by sacrificing new DC reliability are considered. We find that two DC hotspots -- EirGrid (Ireland) and Dominion (US) -- will have difficulty accommodating new DCs needed by the AI growth. In EirGrid, relaxing new DC reliability guarantees increases the power available to 1.6x--4.1x while maintaining 99.6% actual power availability for the new DCs, sufficient for the 5-year AI demand. In Dominion, relaxing reliability guarantees increases available DC capacity similarly (1.5x--4.6x) but not enough for the 5-year AI demand. New DCs only receive 89% power availability. Study of other US power grids -- SPP, CAISO, ERCOT -- shows that sufficient capacity exists for the projected AI load growth. Our results suggest the need to rethink adequacy assessment and also grid planning and management. New research opportunities include coordinated planning, reliability models that incorporate load flexibility, and adaptive load abstractions.

Abstract:This paper addresses the pressing need for rapid decarbonization of energy systems by examining the role of nuclear power in future energy scenarios collected in the IPCC database. Despite their explorative character, energy scenarios can influence decision-makers or might be used to promote certain technology developments. They are increasingly subject to the integration into real-world settings and thus the need for feasibility assessments has emerged in literature. The case of nuclear power is of particular interest, for which proponents project steep capacity increases, whereas literature shows a technology in decline. The paper investigates this discrepancy and questions the nuclear scale-up in energy scenarios by investigating proposed technology scale-up thresholds for low carbon scenarios. By doing so, it moves beyond the often-applied aggregate view of nuclear power and explores the techno-economic feasibility from a reactor-technology-specific lens. Three reactor technologies are chosen: currently dominant high-capacity light water reactors, small modular reactors, and non-light water-cooled reactors (so-called "new" or "advanced" reactor concepts). Results indicate that none of the currently proposed reactor technologies are fit for necessary rapid decarbonization due to availability constraints and economic challenges. We further suggest the adaptation of proposed thresholds to absolute metrics based on energy generation and towards the inclusion of a sub-technology specific perspective. Overall, the need for further scrutiny of energy scenarios, particularly concerning nuclear power, is emphasized in order to prevent instrumentalization by political and industry actors.

Abstract:Nuclear power has been an important part of the US electricity system since the 1950s and continues to be a major source of low-carbon electricity today. Despite having low emissions, high grid reliability, and an excellent track record of safety, nuclear power also demands significant time and upfront capital to deploy, can struggle to compete economically with other generation sources, has intrinsic proliferation risk by relying on fissile material for fuel, and generates radioactive waste for which there are currently no disposal sites. Given the emissions and energy security benefits of having nuclear as part of the energy mix, advanced nuclear technologies have garnered significant interest and investment in recent years. Advanced reactor designs differ from the current operating fleet and have several potential advantages, including lower cost, faster construction, smaller size, inherent safety features, and lower waste yields. Yet, many challenges related to their deployment remain, and overcoming them will dictate whether or not new nuclear technologies become a material element of the future energy infrastructure. This article synthesizes the opportunities and barriers to deploying advanced nuclear reactors and their associated fuel cycles as described in two National Academies consensus reports. It highlights the consensus recommendations that could allow these new technologies to reach commercial success as part of a long-term decarbonization strategy.

Abstract:The potential role for advanced nuclear reactors in U.S. markets is highly uncertain and depends on future technologies, markets, and policies. Using a detailed model of power sector investments and operations, this analysis systematically explores potential drivers and barriers to midcentury advanced nuclear reactor commercialization. Model results suggest that extensive deployment of advanced nuclear technologies would likely require a combination of new policies (especially carbon pricing), innovation in technologies to significantly lower capital and financing costs (likely below $4000/kW), and innovation in business models to enable nonelectricity revenue streams. With policies targeting stringent emissions reductions, the presence of technologies like lower-cost advanced nuclear can reduce compliance costs by over 50%. However, without strong policy support and in a market with low-cost renewables and gas, costs of advanced nuclear reactors would have to decrease substantially from current estimates to make them economically competitive by 2050.

Abstract:_ “There’s no way to get there without a breakthrough.” These were the words of OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman at a sideline meeting with Bloomberg at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, in January, referring to the energy required to power generative AI, data centers, cloud computing, and to support required equipment and infrastructure. As industries swiftly transition into a fresh era of digital revolution, spearheaded by the fast adoption and advancement of generative AI technology, the demand for energy to power data centers and required infrastructure skyrockets. Research firm IDC estimated that global data center energy consumption reached 382 TWh in 2022, with a forecast surge to 803 TWh by 2027. To contextualize, 382 TWh is roughly equivalent to France's annual electricity consumption, while 803 TWh is comparable to Russia's usage (International Energy Agency, 2019 data). Currently, data centers consume approximately 1 to 2% of global electricity, is expected to rise to 8% by 2030, according to WEF. Struggling to keep pace are the sources of energy required to fuel this transformation, and the transmission and distribution constraints of power grids. In 2010, IDC observed a 50% gigaleap in global data production to 1.2 zettabytes (1.2 trillion GB), with projections of annual data production reaching 35 zettabytes by 2020, a milestone reached in 2018 instead. By 2020, 59 zettabytes of data were generated. IDC anticipates newly created data to soar to 175 zettabytes by 2025, notching a 146-fold increase over 15 years. Striking a Secure and Sustainable Balance The voracious energy consumption of data centers is sounding alarms about the need for additional sustainable and efficient power generation sources. SPE-218905, presented last month at the 2024 SPE Western Regional Meeting, dove into the oil and gas industry’s role in assuring “digital decarbonization.” Noting the expanded use of AI, data centers, and cloud computing in our industry, the authors wrote, “The need for energy transition has triggered an unprecedented momentum for developing renewable energy sources. With its historical and current contributions to the energy and products market, all indications are that the petroleum Industry needs to continue its efforts in the production of hydrocarbons while also actively exploring ways to substantially reduce GHG emissions such as methane and carbon dioxide.” Major companies are intensifying digital transformation efforts, reshaping petroleum industry processes. This includes reservoir characterization, drilling design, and economic calculations, which rely on high-performance computers—increasing energy consumption and emissions. Data analytics and AI aid in demand forecasting, inventory management, and predictive maintenance, reducing disruptions and environmental damage, thereby cutting carbon emissions. Automation, drones, robotics, and IoT sensors enhance operations, safety, and efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. Data reign supreme as the "ultimate authority" across the entirety of our industry's operations, guiding the evolution of our practices to foster cleaner operations, prevent downtime, and gain efficiencies. The authors added this is crucial for remaining competitive and improving the industry's reputation, particularly amidst stringent environmental regulations in the US. They recommend actions to advance the sustainable implementation of digital technologies while also conserving power consumption and minimizing emissions. Among the suggestions are power management systems to track and optimize energy usage, the use of renewable and low-carbon energy sources, prioritizing partnerships with cloud providers committed to sustainability, and improving hardware sustainability by using durable materials and energy-efficient designs throughout its life cycle. Leading the development of breakthroughs are operators exploring alternative energy sources and their implementation. Diamondback Energy, the largest independent producer in the Permian Basin, is working with Oklo to develop fast fission nuclear reactors. SPE 215407, presented at the 2023 SPE/IATMI Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Conference, described using low-cost green power for unconventional oil recovery and sharing energy-storage facilities with data centers. A hybrid solution integrates a traditional grid with mobile microgrids between shale-oil fields and data centers. Developing alternative power supplies with wide-scale reliability, dependability, and minimization or elimination of GHG emissions within a feasible capex/opex scenario is the brass ring of sustainability and energy security—and data are helping us get there. Abstract:Nuclear power plant construction has historically been challenged by problems of high cost, cost escalation, and construction delays. The newest set of large reactor projects have also been overbudget and overtime. This has prompted interest in new reactor technologies that proponents claim would not suffer these problems, specifically small modular reactors (SMRs), a class that encompasses a wide range of technologies. This article examines national efforts in three countries, Canada, the UK, and the United States, which are pursuing SMRs vigorously and where the government has funded their development generously. We compare the different strategies and foci of these national strategies, analyzing the various forms of support offered by the separate agencies of the government, and the private companies that are trying to develop SMRs. We also offer an overview of the different types of reactor technologies being pursued in these different countries. Following these, we outline the main challenge confronting SMR technologies: their ability to generate electricity in an economically competitive manner, highlighting the problems resulting from economies of scale being lost. By examining the experience so far, we find that even designs based on well‐tested technology cannot be deployed till after 2030 and the more radical designs might never be. Abstract:The world urgently needs new sources of clean energy due to a growing global population, rising energy use, and the effects of climate change. Nuclear energy is one of the most promising solutions for meeting the world's energy needs now and in the future. One type of nuclear energy, Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR), has gained interest as a potential clean energy source. Recent AI advancements create new ways to help research LENR and to comprehensively analyze the relationships between experimental parameters, materials, and outcomes across diverse LENR research endeavors worldwide. This study explores and investigates the effectiveness of modern AI capabilities leveraging embedding models and topic modeling techniques, including Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), BERTopic, and Top2Vec, in elucidating the underlying structure and prevalent themes within a large LENR research corpus. These methodologies offer unique perspectives on understanding relationships and trends within the LENR research landscape, thereby facilitating advancements in this crucial energy research area. Furthermore, the study presents LENRsim, an experimental machine learning tool to identify similar LENR studies, along with a user-friendly web interface for widespread adoption and utilization. The findings contribute to the understanding and progression of LENR research through data-driven analysis and tool development, enabling more informed decision-making and strategic planning for future research in this field. The insights derived from this study, along with the experimental tools we developed and deployed, hold the potential to significantly aid researchers in advancing their studies of LENR.

Abstract:The need for deep reduction of the greenhouse gases emissions (methane and carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere in order to preserve the global climate amid the growth of electricity production worldwide to meet mankind’s energy needs has stimulated the transfer to the use of energy sources that exclude such emissions. There is an increasing interest to exploitation of renewable energy sources – hydropower, solar and wind power, as well as nuclear power, especially the development of innovative nuclear power. The latter refers to nuclear reactors in which the configuration of systems, coolants, fuels and operating conditions are radically different from traditional reactors. Among promising innovations in the nuclear sector is the concept of small modular reactors (SMRs) whose unique characteristics in terms of enhanced safety, transport mobility, efficiency and economy create favorable conditions for investment in projects to develop them. A number of countries including Argentina, Canada, China, Russia, South Korea and the United States of America are actively working on innovation nuclear power development, and currently more than 70 advanced commercial SMR designs are being built around the world, with the first prototypes to be deployed in the near future or already deployed. However, the construction of a next-generation nuclear power is more than just solving technological problems. Economical factors, primarily the cost of electricity generation compared to renewable energy, will have a significant impact on the development and employment of SMR technology. There is also an export competition among suppliers in the global nuclear technology market, and there are geopolitical issues, including global security and non-proliferation concerns.

Abstract:Nuclear energy is increasingly being considered for such targeted energy applications as data centers in light of their high capacity factors and low carbon emissions. This paper focuses on assessing the tradeoffs between economies of scale versus mass production to identify promising reactor sizes to meet data center demands. A framework is then built using the best cost estimates from the literature to identify ideal reactor power sizes for the needs of the given data center. Results should not be taken to be deterministic but highlight the variability of ideal reactor power output against the required demand. While certain advocates claim that with the gigawatts of clean, firm energy needed, large plants are ideal, others advocate for SMRs that can be deployed in large quantities and reap the benefits from learning effects. The findings of this study showcase that identifying the optimal size for a reactor is likely more nuanced and dependent on the application and its requirements. Overall, the study does show potential economic promise for coupling nuclear reactors to data centers and industrial heat applications under certain key conditions and assumptions.

Abstract:Abstract The authors developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithm for the design and optimization of a nuclear reactor core based on a flexible geometry and demonstrated a 3× improvement in the selected performance metric: temperature peaking factor. The rapid development of advanced, and specifically, additive manufacturing (3-D printing) and its introduction into advanced nuclear core design through the Transformational Challenge Reactor program have presented the opportunity to explore the arbitrary geometry design of nuclear-heated structures. The primary challenge is that the arbitrary geometry design space is vast and requires the computational evaluation of many candidate designs, and the multiphysics simulation of nuclear systems is very time-intensive. Therefore, the authors developed a machine learning-based multiphysics emulator and evaluated thousands of candidate geometries on Summit, Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s leadership class supercomputer. The results presented in this work demonstrate temperature distribution smoothing in a nuclear reactor core through the manipulation of the geometry, which is traditionally achieved in light water reactors through variable assembly loading in the axial direction and fuel shuffling during refueling in the radial direction. The conclusions discuss the future implications for nuclear systems design with arbitrary geometry and the potential for AI-based autonomous design algorithms.

Abstract:The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize the development and generation of renewable energy. AI can be used in various stages of the renewable energy process, from site selection and design to operation and maintenance. By leveraging AI algorithms, renewable energy developers can optimize the efficiency and output of their renewable energy projects, resulting in increased energy production and cost savings. Additionally, AI can help predict and mitigate equipment failures, improve energy storage solutions, and enhance the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. Despite the promising potential of AI in renewable energy development, challenges remain, including data availability, technical expertise, and regulatory hurdles. Nevertheless, the integration of AI in renewable energy generation is expected to continue to grow in the coming years, leading to a more sustainable and efficient energy future.

Abstract:The Nuclear Fission Technology (NFT) series of Virtual Special Issues (VSIs) for the Journal Nuclear Engineering and Design (J NED) was proposed in 2023, including the request to potential authors of manuscript to address the following questions: For how long will (water-cooling based) large size nuclear reactor survive? Will water-technology based SMRs displace large reactors? Will non-water-cooling technology SMRs and micro-reactors have an industrial deployment? Will breeding technology, including thorium exploitation, have due relevance? Will 'nuclear infrastructure' (fuel supply, financial framework, competence by regulators for new designs, waste management, etc.) remain or be sufficiently robust? Several dozen Guest Editors (GEs), i.e., the authors of the present document, managed the activity together with the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of the journal. More than one thousand scientists contributed 470+ manuscripts, not evenly distributed among the geographical regions of the world and not necessarily addressing directly the bullet-questions, but certainly providing a view of current research being done. Key conclusions are as follows: (a) Large size reactors are necessary for a sustainable and safe exploitation of nuclear fission technology; (b) The burning of U-233 (from thorium) and Pu-239 (from uranium) is unavoidable, as well as recycling residual uranium currently part of waste; (c) Nuclear infrastructures in countries that currently use, or are entering the use of, fission energy for electricity production need a century planning; (d) The adoption of small reactors for commercial naval propulsion, hydrogen production and desalination is highly recommended.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has enormous potential in improving the efficiency and reducing the cost of energy systems; however, it is unclear whether it can help accelerate the transition from traditional fossil energy to renewable energy (RE). Previous studies have primarily focused on the applications of AI in the energy sector from a technical perspective; in contrast, this paper identifies the process and mechanism of AI's impact on the energy transition, using the wavelet-based quantile-on-quantile approach to estimate the impact of various AI quantiles on energy structure quantiles in different periods. Using data from China, the paper finds that the upper quantiles of AI increase the share of RE in total energy in the long term, demonstrating that AI can, by unlocking its vast potential, accelerate the transition to RE. However, in the short and medium terms, AI negatively impacts RE share, primarily due to considerable challenges in integrating AI into the RE sector. Moreover, the non-RE sector may temporarily benefit more from AI than the RE sector. These findings provide crucial insights for policymakers in coordinating AI's short- and long-term effects on the energy transition to effectively harness RE's potential and achieve the goal of a low-carbon economy.
