Abstract:Optical fiber–based sensing technology can drastically improve Earth observations by enabling the use of existing submarine communication cables as seafloor sensors. Previous interferometric and polarization-based techniques demonstrated environmental sensing over cable lengths up to 10,500 kilometers. However, measurements were limited to the integrated changes over the entire length of the cable. We demonstrate the detection of earthquakes and ocean signals on individual spans between repeaters of a 5860-kilometer-long transatlantic cable rather than the whole cable. By applying this technique to the existing undersea communication cables, which have a repeater-to-repeater span length of 45 to 90 kilometers, the largely unmonitored ocean floor could be instrumented with thousands of permanent real-time environmental sensors without changes to the underwater infrastructure.

Abstract:Seafloor geophysical instrumentation is challenging to deploy and maintain but critical for studying submarine earthquakes and Earth's interior. Emerging fiber-optic sensing technologies that can leverage submarine telecommunication cables present an opportunity to fill the data gap. We successfully sensed seismic and water waves over a 10,000-kilometer-long submarine cable connecting Los Angeles, California, and Valparaiso, Chile, by monitoring the polarization of regular optical telecommunication channels. We detected multiple moderate-to-large earthquakes along the cable in the 10-millihertz to 5-hertz band. We also recorded pressure signals from ocean swells in the primary microseism band, implying the potential for tsunami sensing. Our method, because it does not require specialized equipment, laser sources, or dedicated fibers, is highly scalable for converting global submarine cables into continuous real-time earthquake and tsunami observatories.

Abstract:The ocean is key to understanding societal threats including climate change, sea level rise, ocean warming, tsunamis, and earthquakes. Because the ocean is difficult and costly to monitor, we lack fundamental data needed to adequately model, understand, and address these threats. One solution is to integrate sensors into future undersea telecommunications cables. This is the mission of the SMART subsea cables initiative (Science Monitoring And Reliable Telecommunications). SMART sensors would "piggyback" on the power and communications infrastructure of a million kilometers of undersea fiber optic cable and thousands of repeaters, creating the potential for seafloor-based global ocean observing at a modest incremental cost. Initial sensors would measure temperature, pressure, and seismic acceleration. The resulting data would address two critical scientific and societal issues: the long-term need for sustained climate-quality data from the under-sampled ocean (e.g., deep ocean temperature, sea level, and circulation), and the near-term need for improvements to global tsunami warning networks. A Joint Task Force (JTF) led by three UN agencies (ITU/WMO/UNESCO-IOC) is working to bring this initiative to fruition. This paper explores the ocean science and early warning improvements available from SMART cable data, and the societal, technological, and financial elements of realizing such a global network. Simulations show that deep ocean temperature and pressure measurements can improve estimates of ocean circulation and heat content, and cable-based pressure and seismic-acceleration sensors can improve tsunami warning times and earthquake parameters. The technology of integrating these sensors into fiber optic cables is discussed, addressing sea and land-based elements plus delivery of real-time open data products to end users. The science and business case for SMART cables is evaluated. SMART cables have been endorsed by major ocean science organizations, and JTF is working with cable suppliers and sponsors, multilateral development banks and end users to incorporate SMART capabilities into future cable projects. By investing now, we can build up a global ocean network of long-lived SMART cable sensors, creating a transformative addition to the Global Ocean Observing System.

Abstract:Ocean current measurements play a crucial role in aiding our understanding of ocean dynamics and circulation systems. Traditional methods, such as drifters and ocean buoys, are sparsely distributed and of limited effectiveness due to the nature of the marine environment and high operating expenses. Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is an emerging technology using submarine optical-fiber (OF) cables as dense seismo-acoustic arrays, offering a new perspective for ocean observations. Here, in situ observations of ocean surface gravity waves (OSGWs) and ocean currents by DAS were made along a pre-existing 33.6 km seafloor OF cable. The average current velocity and water depth along the cable were determined from observed OSGW-induced seafloor noise (0.05-0.2 Hz) using ambient-noise interferometry and frequency-domain beamforming. Variations in current velocity were derived at high spatiotemporal resolution using the frequency-domain waveform-stretching method. The inverted current velocity was verified by nearby ocean buoy observations and forecasting results. The observations demonstrate the effectiveness of DAS-instrumented OF cables in monitoring ocean currents.

Abstract:Information and knowledge explosions boost the development of telecommunication infrastructures, especially for submarine fiber optic cables. These underwater fibers not only undertake most of the international data transmission on this planet, but also offer new opportunities to study earth science and human marine activities. The emerging technology of integrated sensing and communication is putting this concept into practice. In this article, we present work on coastal event monitoring with photonic integrated sensing and communication technology using submarine telecommunication optical cables. Ocean wave analysis, earthquake detection, and marine ferry monitoring are highlighted for detailed analysis. With the proposed integrated system, we successfully observed ocean waves with different frequencies and velocities, microseisms within 200 km, Mw 4.3 - Mw 6.3 earthquakes in the Far East, and vessel sailing activities. Enabled by the novel integrated technology and mass submarine fiber networks, more research works on photonic integrated sensing and communication systems aiming at ocean science and marine engineering are expected for future insights.

Abstract:Cabled seafloor observatories play an important role in ocean exploration for its long-term, real-time, and in-situ observation characteristics. In establishing a permanent, reliable, and robust seafloor observatory, a highly reliable cable switching and fault isolation method is essential. After reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of existing switching methods, we propose a novel active switching method for network configuration. Without additional communication path requirements, the switching method provides a way to communicate with a shore station through an existing power transmission path. A coded voltage signal with a distinct sequence is employed as the communication medium to transmit commands. The analysis of the maximum bit frequency of the voltage signals guarantees the accuracy of command recognition. A prototype based on the switching method is built and tested in a laboratory environment, which validated the functionality and reliability of the method.

Abstract:Our oceans are critical to the health of our planet and its inhabitants. Increasing pressures on our marine environment are triggering an urgent need for continuous and comprehensive monitoring of the oceans and stressors, including anthropogenic activity. Current ocean observational systems are expensive and have limited temporal and spatial coverage. However, there exists a dense network of fibre-optic (FO) telecommunication cables, covering both deep ocean and coastal areas around the globe. FO cables have an untapped potential for advanced acoustic sensing that, with recent technological break-throughs, can now fill many gaps in quantitative ocean monitoring. Here we show for the first time that an advanced distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) interrogator can be used to capture a broad range of acoustic phenomena with unprecedented signal-to-noise ratios and distances. We have detected, tracked, and identified whales, storms, ships, and earthquakes. We live-streamed 250 TB of DAS data from Svalbard to mid-Norway via Uninett's research network over 44 days; a first step towards real-time processing and distribution. Our findings demonstrate the potential for a global Earth-Ocean-Atmosphere-Space DAS monitoring network with multiple applications, e.g. marine mammal forecasting combined with ship tracking, to avoid ship strikes. By including automated processing and fusion with other remote-sensing data (automated identification systems, satellites, etc.), a low-cost ubiquitous real-time monitoring network with vastly improved coverage and resolution is within reach. We anticipate that this is a game-changer in establishing a global observatory for Ocean-Earth sciences that will mitigate current spatial sampling gaps. Our pilot test confirms the viability of this 'cloud-observatory' concept.
Distributed Optical Fibre Sensing for High Space‐Time Resolution Ocean Velocity Observations: A Case Study From a Macrotidal Channel

Abstract:Despite significant recent technological advances, oceanographic observations on horizontal scales of meters to a few kilometres prove challenging. Exploiting legacy seafloor cables presents a disruptive prospect to address this gap, as it may provide low‐cost sustained observations with high space‐time resolution, enabled through novel opto‐electronic interrogation of optical fibers within the cables. Here, we demonstrate this approach in a renewable tidal energy cable embedded within a region with a strong barotropic tide. By making remote measurements continuously over 12 hr, we obtain the distributed differential strain experienced by 2 km of offshore cable from a diverse range of oceanic flow processes, with an along‐cable resolution of 2.04 m. We successfully identify: (a) nearshore wave breaking and its modulation by changes in water depth; (b) along‐cable tidal velocity, shown to be linearly related to the differential strain; and (c) high‐frequency motions consistent with 3‐dimensional turbulent processes, either of natural origin or from flow‐cable interaction. These inferences are supported by nearby conventional measurements of water depth and velocity.

Abstract:Marine observations with optics Placing sensors on the seafloor is difficult, but a sensor network has huge potential for observing processes occurring both below and above the seafloor. Lindsey et al. measured acoustic vibrations collected by attaching a laser to the Monterey Accelerated Research System's subsea optical fiber during a maintenance period (see the Perspective by Jousset). Acoustic waves were monitored by changes in laser light along the cable. The observations from just a few days allowed mapping of an unknown fault system and detection of several dynamic processes in the water column above. Science , this issue p. 1103 ; see also p. 1076

Abstract:Earthquake monitoring across the globe is currently achieved with networks of seismic stations. The data from these networks have been instrumental in advancing our understanding of the Earth's interior structure and dynamic behaviour. However, almost all seismic stations are located on land and earthquakes of magnitude smaller than 4 at the bottom of the oceans remain largely undetected. Here we show that ordinary telecommunication optical fibre links can detect seismic events when combined with state-of-the-art frequency metrology techniques. We have detected earthquakes over terrestrial and submarine optical fibre links with length ranging from 75 to 535 km and a geographical distance from the earthquake's epicentre ranging from 25 to 18,500 km. In contrast to existing commercial reflectometry-based acoustic sensing methods used widely in the oil and gas industry, which are limited to only a few tens of kilometres, the technique presented here can be extended over thousands of kilometres, paving the way for detection of remote underwater earthquakes. By using the proposed technique on the existing extensive submarine optical fibre infrastructure, which already criss-crosses the seas and oceans, a global seismic network for real-time detection of underwater earthquakes could be implemented. The ability to detect off-shore earthquakes closer to the source could also enable a cost-effective solution for early detection of tsunamis.

Abstract:Recent developments in optical fiber cable technology allows the use of existing and future submarine telecommunication cables to provide seismic and sea-level information. In this work we study the impact of three different technologies, 1) SMART, Science Monitoring and Reliable Telecommunications; 2) DAS, Distributed Acoustic Sensing, and; 3) LI, Laser Interferometry, for effective earthquake and tsunami monitoring capabilities on the NE Atlantic. The SW Iberia is the source area of the largest destructive earthquake that struck Europe since the year 1000, the November 1, 1755 event. This earthquake generated also a destructive tsunami affecting the whole basin. This tectonically active area is crossed by the CAM (Continent-Azores-Madeira) submarine cable on a ring configuration. Due to the end of cable lifetime the current cables need to be replaced by 2024 and the technical requirements must be defined in mid-2021. The Azores archipelago is the focus of frequent seismic crizes and occasionally destructive earthquakes. A common feature of these seismic events is that they take place offshore, an area that is difficult to monitor from land-based instruments. In this work we evaluate the contribution of SMART cables to the earthquake monitoring and tsunami early warning system in SW Iberia and show how DAS and LI can improve earthquake monitoring on two active domains of the Azores. For tsunami early warning, we show how the offshore sea-level measurements provide clean offshore tsunami records when compared to coastal observations by tide gauges, which greatly improves the efficiency of the system. For earthquake monitoring, the data processing operational routine is examined using Monte-Carlo simulations. These take into consideration the errors in phase picking and the uncertainty on the 1D velocity model used for earthquake location. Quality of earthquake location is examined using the difference between the true location and the centroid of the computed epicenters and by the overall ellipse of uncertainty obtained from 100 runs. The added value provided by instrumented submarine telecommunication cables to mitigate earthquake and tsunami risk demonstrated in this work will help authorities and the society in general to take the political decisions required for its full implementation worldwide.

Abstract:Sparse seismic instrumentation in the oceans limits our understanding of deep Earth dynamics and submarine earthquakes. Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), an emerging technology that converts optical fiber to seismic sensors, allows us to leverage pre-existing submarine telecommunication cables for seismic monitoring. Here we report observations of microseism, local surface gravity waves, and a teleseismic earthquake along a 4192-sensor ocean-bottom DAS array offshore Belgium. We observe in-situ how opposing groups of ocean surface gravity waves generate double-frequency seismic Scholte waves, as described by the Longuet-Higgins theory of microseism generation. We also extract P- and S-wave phases from the 2018-08-19 [Formula: see text] Fiji deep earthquake in the 0.01-1 Hz frequency band, though waveform fidelity is low at high frequencies. These results suggest significant potential of DAS in next-generation submarine seismic networks.
Sensitive seismic sensors based on microwave frequency fiber interferometry in commercially deployed cables

Abstract:The use of fiber infrastructures for environmental sensing is attracting global interest, as optical fibers emerge as low cost and easily accessible platforms exhibiting a large terrestrial deployment. Moreover, optical fiber networks offer the unique advantage of providing observations of submarine areas, where the sparse existence of permanent seismic instrumentation due to cost and difficulties in deployment limits the availability of high-resolution subsea information on natural hazards in both time and space. The use of optical techniques that leverage pre-existing fiber infrastructure can efficiently provide higher resolution coverage and pave the way for the identification of the detailed structure of the Earth especially on seismogenic submarine faults. The prevailing optical technique for use in earthquake detection and structural analysis is distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) which offers high spatial resolution and sensitivity, however is limited in range (< 100 km). In this work, we present a novel technique which relies on the dissemination of a stable microwave frequency along optical fibers in a closed loop configuration, thereby forming an interferometer that is sensitive to deformation. We call the proposed technique Microwave Frequency Fiber Interferometer (MFFI) and demonstrate its sensitivity to deformation induced by moderate-to-large earthquakes from either local or regional epicenters. MFFI signals are compared to signals recorded by accelerometers of the National Observatory of Athens, Institute of Geodynamics National Seismic Network and by a commercially available DAS interrogator operating in parallel at the same location. Remarkable agreement in dynamical behavior and strain rate estimation is achieved and demonstrated. Thus, MFFI emerges as a novel technique in the field of fiber seismometers offering critical advantages with respect to implementation cost, maximum range and simplicity.
Marine Seismic Source Characterization Using Fiber Optic Sensors

Abstract:Abstract This laboratory study explores the geophysical imaging applications of a fiber optic sensing system in a marine environment, from fiber installed on pipes or casing to fiber laying on the floor. The most common application with fiber installed on casing is borehole seismic imaging. With fiber laying on the ocean floor, surface seismic imaging is a possible application. This is tested in a laboratory setting using a Distributed Acoustic Sensing "DAS" system, Fiber Bragg Grating "FBG" system, and a conventional geophysical hydrophone system. A setup is made using PVC pipes and a water-filled tank to simulate a marine environment, and the sensing systems were distributed along the pipes and on the tank floor. Single mode telecommunication fiber was laid out on the tank floor and the pipes, which consist of a vertical pipe segment and a horizontal pipe segment. The pipes are connected to a water reservoir to allow flow from the reservoir through the vertical pipe then the horizontal pipe into the tank. An array of FBG sensors were distributed along the pipes and some were left floating in the water. A hydrophone array was secured to the vertical pipe segment and distributed along the horizontal pipe segment to make conventional geophysical imaging measurements. Seismic sources with different frequencies were used, a piezoelectric transducer was used to introduce higher frequency (ranging from 500 Hz to 25 kHz), and a hammer source was used with different material as broad frequency sources. The measurements made were compared across the sensing systems and the frequency response was used to evaluate the preservation of the source frequency signature on the sensing instruments. The DAS system was sensitive to low-frequency ambient noise which made it difficult to see the frequency response of the seismic sources, however, it was useful in capturing the higher range of frequencies. The FBG system showed better results in capturing lower frequency signal but was limited by the high frequencies it could capture. Nevertheless, the captured high frequencies exceeded the frequency range of interest for seismic imaging but are useful for applications of wireless communication using fiber and PZT transducers. Therefore, both systems can capture the response of the seismic sources for imaging but with different noise sensitivity. The results presented in this study indicate that a fiber optic sensing system can be used for seismic imaging in an offshore environment. Further tests are recommended in larger scale environments to confirm the findings of this study. The advantages of using a fiber optic sensing system are highlighted in this study. Finally, further applications to wireless communication via fiber optic sensors and high-frequency transducers are discussed.
Dynamic strain determination using fibre-optic cables allows imaging of seismological and structural features

Abstract:Natural hazard prediction and efficient crust exploration require dense seismic observations both in time and space. Seismological techniques provide ground-motion data, whose accuracy depends on sensor characteristics and spatial distribution. Here we demonstrate that dynamic strain determination is possible with conventional fibre-optic cables deployed for telecommunication. Extending recently distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) studies, we present high resolution spatially un-aliased broadband strain data. We recorded seismic signals from natural and man-made sources with 4-m spacing along a 15-km-long fibre-optic cable layout on Reykjanes Peninsula, SW-Iceland. We identify with unprecedented resolution structural features such as normal faults and volcanic dykes in the Reykjanes Oblique Rift, allowing us to infer new dynamic fault processes. Conventional seismometer recordings, acquired simultaneously, validate the spectral amplitude DAS response between 0.1 and 100 Hz bandwidth. We suggest that the networks of fibre-optic telecommunication lines worldwide could be used as seismometers opening a new window for Earth hazard assessment and exploration.

Optical fibre sensing of turbulent-frequency motions in the oceanic environment

Abstract:Observations of turbulence in the oceanic environment are sparse, with very few cases of coherent measurements with significant spatio-temporal extent due primarily to limitations of current observational tools. Here we propose submarine cables with embedded optical fibres as a potential solution to fill this observational gap, and utilise a recent 12-h observational optical fibre data set from a fast-flowing tidal channel to demonstrate such potential. Firstly, the presence of turbulent-scale signals driven by flow-topography interaction is shown at frequencies of 1 Hz and higher. These signals are consistent with the timing of the tidal flow as recorded by a nearby conventional sensor. Secondly, we show the presence of surface gravity waves with periods of 10 s, which are tight in frequency space further offshore but leak energy into the turbulent frequency range on parts of the cable closer to shore. This is compatible with shoreward-propagating surface waves that break in shallow water. Finally, we fit a theoretical spectral structure to the observations to show that much of the collected data (i) has a spectral slope that is consistent with the turbulent inertial subrange, and (ii) has a range of spectral energy consistent with that expected from turbulence generation by bottom drag acting on the tidal flow. In combination, these results highlight the potential for optical fibre sensing of turbulence, and call for a targeted experiment to characterise the fibre's turbulence-sensing capabilities.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish the theoretical framework for understanding the sensing capabilities of optical fibers. We show the distinct advantage of polarization over phase in detecting subhertz environmental processes. Subsequently, we propose a scheme capable of extracting the spectrum of perturbations affecting a specific section at any position along an optical fiber by detecting the state of polarization of the backreflected light. We discuss two examples of earthquake detection and the detection of sea swells and ocean tides through the analysis of the state of polarization of an optical signal reconstructed by the receiver of a transoceanic cable, obtained from an online database.\cite{zhongwenzhan_2020} Finally, we provide the analytical expression for the cross-correlation of the polarization perturbations of two wavelength division multiplexed channels, and show that the analysis of the polarization correlations between adjacent channels can provide valuable insights into the localization of earthquakes.

Abstract:Long range optical fiber sensors for power cable maintenance have been incorporated into a newly developed 500 kV DC submarine power cable. Optical fibers are used for a distributed temperature sensor and a mechanical damage sensor. The distributed temperature sensor provides data on temperature at distances up to 30 km, and the mechanical damage sensor locates external damage points on the submarine cable. After each characteristic was investigated, optical fiber sensors were incorporated on the submarine power cable. This composite cable was evaluated by various mechanical tests. The results were satisfactory and showed the composite cable to be of practical use. This new approach of incorporating optical fiber sensors in the cable structure brings a new sophistication and reliability to cable maintenance.

Abstract:Monitoring seismic activity on the ocean floor is a critical yet challenging task, largely due to the difficulties of physical deployment and maintenance of sensors in these remote areas. Optical fiber sensing techniques are well-suited for this task, given the presence of existing transoceanic telecommunication cables. However, current techniques capable of interrogating the entire length of transoceanic fibers are either incompatible with conventional telecommunication lasers or are limited in their ability to identify the position of the seismic wave. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a method to measure and localize seismic waves in transoceanic cables using only conventional polarization optics, by launching pulses of changing polarization. We demonstrate our technique by measuring and localizing seismic waves from a magnitude M w 6.0 earthquake (Guerrero, Mexico) using a submarine cable connecting Los Angeles, California and Valparaiso, Chile. Our approach introduces a cost-effective and practical solution that can potentially increase the density of geophysical measurements in hard-to-reach regions, improving disaster preparedness and response, with minimal additional demands on existing infrastructure.
