Abstract:Photothermal CO2 methanation reaction represents a promising strategy for addressing CO2-related environmental issues. The presence of efficient tandem catalytic sites with a localized high-temperature is an effective pathway to enhance the performance of CO2 methanation. Here the bimetallic RuCo nanoparticles anchored on ZrO2 fiber cotton (RuCo/ZrO2) as a photothermal catalyst for CO2 methanation are prepared. A significant photothermal CO2 methanation performance with optimal CH4 selectivity (99%) and rate (169.93 mmol g(cat)(-1) h(-1)) is achieved. The photothermal energy of the RuCo bimetallic nanoparticles, confined by the infrared insulation and low thermal conductivity of the ZrO2 fiber cotton (ZrO2 FC), provides a localized high-temperature. In situ spectroscopic experiments on RuCo/ZrO2, Ru/ZrO2, and Co/ZrO2 indicate that the construction of tandem catalytic sites, where the Co site favors CO2 conversion to CO while incorporating Ru enhances CO* adsorption for subsequent hydrogenation, results in a higher selectivity toward CH4. This work opens a new insight into designing tandem catalysts with a photothermal confinement effect in CO2 methanation reaction.
Highly efficient and stable photothermal catalytic CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over Ru/In2O3 under atmospheric pressure

Abstract:Photothermal catalytic CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH with renewable H-2 is a promising method to convert solar energy into chemical energy. However, it is still impeded by limited CO2 conversion efficiency and poor CH3OH selectivity under mild conditions. Herein, we report a Ru/In2O3 catalyst for efficient and stable photothermal CH3OH production from CO2 hydrogenation under atmospheric pressure. The Ru/In2O3 catalyst delivers a remarkable solar CH3OH production of 280.4 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which is similar to 50 times higher than that of pure In2O3 under the same conditions and surpasses by far reported In2O3-based photothermal catalysts. Detailed characterizations demonstrate that the synergy of photothermal heating effect and hot-carriers-induced activation of reactants on Ru together with the interaction between Ru and In2O3 enhances the activation of CO2 and H-2. Moreover, Ru modulates the electronic structure of In2O3 and promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies, which is favorable for the hydrogenation process to form CH3OH. This work paves a way for the rational design of efficient catalysts for solar CH3OH production from CO2 hydrogenation under mild conditions.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of CO2 into methanol is of particular interest as it does not only provide valuable methanol, but also utilize the waste CO2. In the present work, a CoO/Co/TiO2 catalyst was developed and utilized in catalyzing CO2 to methanol under photothermal conditions. From the results of characterization, the supported Co nanoparticles (NPs) were composed of Co0 in the bulk, CoO film formed from air oxidation on the surface, and Co0 at Co NPs-TiO2 interfaces. This structure provided the possibility for a Z scheme photothermal catalytic system, which revealed a high activity for methanol formation in aqueous media under atmosphere pressure. It was proposed that the light excited electrons from the valence band (VB) of TiO2, and the excited electrons could enhance the Co0 catalytic activity under thermal conditions. The present approach will offer a new strategy to design Co based Z scheme catalysts and further improve the conversion efficiency from CO2 to fuels.

Abstract:In the photothermal synergistic catalytic conversion of CO2 and H2O, the catalyst harnesses solar energy to accumulate heat, thereby elevating the reaction system’s temperature. The influence of this temperature effect on surface chemical reactions remains an underexplored area. Here the impact of temperature on the surface-level thermodynamic reactions and conversion of CO2 with H2O on oxide semiconductors at the atomic scale was investigated using first-principle calculations. 13 different metal oxides and 5 transition metal clusters were used to introduce surface functional sites on the TiO2 supporting catalyst. The potential metal oxide cocatalysts that could be most beneficial to the following conversion of CO2 by H2O were initially screened by calculating the degrees of promotion of CO2 adsorption and activation of surface H to provide protons. The proton donation and hydrogen evolution difficulty from H2O were further analyzed, identifying transition metal cocatalysts that promote direct CO2 hydrogenation. Upon introducing bifunctional sites to facilitate adsorption and reduction, the production of CH3OH and CH4 could be further enhanced through the facilitation of the proton donation process of H2O. The results of Gibbs free-energy calculations revealed that increasing temperature enhances the reaction thermodynamics for each C1 product formation at different surface sites to varying degrees. These findings offer valuable theoretical insights for designing and regulating active sites on oxide semiconductor surfaces for efficient photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction by H2O.

Abstract:Converting the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into important chemical fuels is promising to alleviate the global warming problem. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is beneficial for energy storage and environmental protection; however, it suffers from low efficiency. Recently, photothermal catalysis, which merits the advantages of both photocatalysis and traditional thermally driven catalysis, has been extensively studied and proven promising. Herein, the scope of catalyst type within heterogeneous catalysts is discussed, the latest progress of photothermal heterogeneous catalysts designed for CO2 conversion reactions is described, including the reduction of CO2 by H2O, CO2 hydrogenation to CO, CH4, CH3OH, or C2+, CO2 reforming of CH4 (CRM), CO2 cycloaddition reaction, etc. the preparation principles of photothermal catalysts are summarized, the challenges on the design and development of highly efficient photothermal catalysts are pointed out, and the future research directions are prospected.

Abstract:This study has designed and implemented a library of hetero-nanostructured catalysts, denoted as Pd@Nb2O5, comprised of size-controlled Pd nanocrystals interfaced with Nb2O5 nanorods. This study also demonstrates that the catalytic activity and selectivity of CO2 reduction to CO and CH4 products can be systematically tailored by varying the size of the Pd nanocrystals supported on the Nb2O5 nanorods. Using large Pd nanocrystals, this study achieves CO and CH4 production rates as high as 0.75 and 0.11 mol h(-1) g(Pd)(-1), respectively. By contrast, using small Pd nanocrystals, a CO production rate surpassing 18.8 mol h(-1) g(Pd)(-1) is observed with 99.5% CO selectivity. These performance metrics establish a new milestone in the champion league of catalytic nanomaterials that can enable solar-powered gas-phase heterogeneous CO2 reduction. The remarkable control over the catalytic performance of Pd@Nb2O5 is demonstrated to stem from a combination of photothermal, electronic and size effects, which is rationally tunable through nanochemistry.

Abstract:Excessive CO2 2 emissions pose challenges in climate and energy sectors. Heterogeneous catalytic CO2 2 conversion to valuable chemicals, particularly C1 species, has attracted worldwide attention. However, these processes often necessitate high pressures and temperatures, limiting their practicality. Therefore, it is imperative to develop new CO2 2 hydrogenation strategies under milder conditions. Photothermal catalysis offers a promising pathway to reduce energy consumption by combining photocatalysis and thermal catalysis. This review focuses on recent advancements in photothermal CO2 2 hydrogenation to C1 products, including reverse water-gas shift, CO2 2 methanation, dry reforming of methane, and CO2 2 hydrogenation to methanol. In particular, in situ characterization is crucial in elucidating the photothermal catalytic mechanisms. We finally discuss the existing challenges, propose future perspectives, and provide insights into the catalytic mechanism for the selective production of C1 products. This review aims to enhance understanding of photothermal CO2 2 conversion and guide future research in solar-driven energy utilization systems.

Abstract:Solar-induced photothermal catalysis of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising method for chemical CO2 conversion. Modification of the metal oxide catalyst surface, including the introduction of oxygen vacancies and the doping and loading of metal or metal oxides, has a considerable influence on the product selectivity of the CO2RR. The complete free energy profiles of the CO2RR pathway on modified anatase TiO2 (101) surfaces are calculated based on density functional theory. The modified surfaces enhance the adsorption of CO2, and competition between desorption and reduction of the key intermediates (CO*, HCOOH*, HCHO*, and CH3OH*) is crucial to the selectivity for the CO2RR to form C1 products. The loading of Au and the doping of MgO enhance the electron transfer between the key intermediates and the surface, as well as the internal electron transfer inside the key intermediates, which efficiently activates the key intermediates and significantly increases the CH4 selectivity of the CO2RR.

Abstract:Abstract Upcycling of CO 2 into fuels by virtually unlimited solar energy provides an ultimate solution for addressing the substantial challenges of energy crisis and climate change. In this work, we report an efficient nanostructured Ru/MnO x catalyst composed of well-defined Ru/MnO/Mn 3 O 4 for photo-thermal catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation to CH 4 , which is the result of a combination of external heating and irradiation. Remarkably, under relatively mild conditions of 200 °C, a considerable CH 4 production rate of 166.7 mmol g −1 h −1 was achieved with a superior selectivity of 99.5% at CO 2 conversion of 66.8%. The correlative spectroscopic and theoretical investigations suggest that the yield of CH 4 is enhanced by coordinating photon energy with thermal energy to reduce the activation energy of reaction and promote formation of key intermediate COOH* species over the catalyst. This work opens up a new strategy for CO 2 hydrogenation toward CH 4 .

Abstract:Using heat or radiation as a single driving force for implementing carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion is usually limited by sluggish kinetics. Whereas the thermally-assisted photocatalysis by coupling utilization of solar energy and thermal energy has therefore provided a promising alternative strategy to boost the conversion of CO2 into high value-added synthetic fuels or chemicals under mild conditions. Herein, we will focus on the state-of-the-art advance in CO2 reduction to fuels by thermally-assisted photocatalysis, with emphases on the thermally-promoted principles, the thermal input patterns as well as the product distributions of CO2 reduction. In addition, some current challenges and perspectives will be discussed. This review not only gives a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of thermally-assisted photocatalytic CO2 reduction, but provides guidelines to other catalytic transformations (e.g. methane oxidation, nitrogen fixation, and organic coupling reactions) by integrating solar and thermal energy to enhance the reaction efficiency.

Abstract:As a nonpetroleum process, photo‐driven Fischer‐Tropsch synthesis provides a practical approach for the synthesis of light olefins. However, maximizing the solar energy conversion efficiency based on the design of composite catalyst and understanding catalytic mechanism remain challenging. Herein, a novel carbon‐coated CoMn‐based catalysts, C‐coated mixture of Co and MnO, is designed for the efficient conversion of syngas to light olefins under light irradiation. The CoMnC‐450 catalyst exhibited a CO conversion of 12.6% with a selectivity to light olefins of 36.5% under light irradiation, showing 5.5‐fold the activity of thermocatalysis. Experimental characterizations ascertain CoMnC‐450 catalyst can be excited to generate photogenerated carriers under light irradiation and then the electron transfer to metallic Co to form electron‐rich active sites with carbon mediation, thereby enhancing the catalytic performance. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculation based on density functional theory reveal the unique roles of photogenerated carriers in promoting the adsorption and activation of CO molecule. This study demonstrates a feasible catalyst model to efficiently utilize full‐spectral solar light to produce the value‐added chemical. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:Photothermal catalytic reduction of CO2 with H2 as the reducing agent holds great promise for the conversion of combustion-derived CO2 into hydrocarbon fuels and other valuable commodity chemicals. Whilst a number of promising photothermal catalysts have been developed for CO2 reduction, reaction mechanisms remain elusive, and the factors controlling product selectivity are unclear. In this work, three distinct transition metal alloy nanoparticle catalysts, each supported by amorphous alumina, were fabricated by hydrogen reduction of CoFeAl-layered double hydroxide (CoFeAl-LDH), NiFeAl-LDH and NiCoAl-LDH nanosheet precursors at 650 °C. By using the different alloy nanoparticles (CoFe, NiFe or NiCo) and tuning the reaction parameters including temperature and gas flow rate during photothermal CO2 reduction with H2, different product distributions (CH4, CO, light olefins, paraffins) were obtained, with the distribution depending strongly on the alloy catalyst composition. A reaction pathway for CO2 reduction consisting of multiple steps was discovered and confirmed by in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy studies and a series of control catalytic experiments. Findings provide valuable new insights about the reaction mechanism of photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction to hydrocarbon products over metal catalysts and the factors regulating product selectivity.

Abstract:Conversion of CO2 using renewable hydrogen to produce valuable chemicals has recently become highly attractive. Light olefins are important basic monomers for the production of various commodities. This work developed a bifunctional catalyst composed of ZnO-Y2O3 oxide and SAPO-34 zeolite, which catalyzes the selective hydrogenation of CO2 to light olefins with a selectivity in hydrocarbons reaching 83.9% at a conversion of 27.6% at 390 degrees C. The obtained results demonstrated that CO2 conversion and product distribution are strongly dependent on the oxide composition and structure. This new bimetallic oxide catalyst appears promising for further development of CO2 conversion to other valuable chemicals.

Abstract:This review provides a comprehensive insight into the recent advancements, challenges, and opportunities in the field of CO2 hydrogenation over In2O3‐based catalysts, with a particular focus on their thermal, photo, and photothermal catalytic activities. The conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value‐added chemicals presents an innovative pathway for advancing the low‐carbon clean energy revolution, contributing significantly to CO2 emission reduction and resource utilization. Recently, In2O3‐based catalysts have emerged as a promising frontier in CO2 hydrogenation research. This review provides a comprehensive introduction of the latest advancements in the application of In2O3‐based catalysts across thermal, photocatalytic, and photothermal catalysis platforms. The review examines critical aspects such as structural properties, active sites, reaction mechanisms, performance enhancement, product impact, and the development of multi‐functional catalytic systems. Thermal Catalysis for CO2 hydrogenation involves the application of elevated temperatures to initiate and drive the hydrogenation reactions. Photocatalysis, on the other hand, harnesses light energy to facilitate these reactions. Among these approaches, photothermal catalysis has emerged as a particularly promising method for CO2 hydrogenation, offering several advantages over both thermal catalysis and photocatalysis. These advantages include more efficient energy utilization, a broader range of reaction conditions, enhanced synergistic effects, selective activation, and improved environmental sustainability. This review not only summarizes the current state of research in this field but also may provide critical insights and guidance for future studies aimed at advancing artificial carbon cycling processes.

Abstract:Photo-thermal co-catalytic reduction of CO2 to synthesize value-added chemicals presents a promising approach to addressing environmental issues. Nevertheless, traditional catalysts exhibit low light utilization efficiency, leading to the generation of a reduced number of electron-hole pairs and rapid recombination, thereby limiting catalytic performance enhancement. Herein, a Mott-Schottky heterojunction catalyst was developed by incorporating nitrogen-doped carbon coated TiO2 supported nickel (Ni) nanometallic particles (Ni/x-TiO2@NC). The optimal Ni/0.5-TiO2@NC sample displayed a conversion rate of 71.6 % and a methane (CH4) production rate of 65.3 mmol/(gcat·h) during photo-thermal co-catalytic CO2 methanation under full-spectrum illumination, with a CH4 selectivity exceeding 99.6 %. The catalyst demonstrates good stability as it shows no decay after two reaction cycles. The Mott-Schottky heterojunction catalysts display excellent efficiency in separating photo-generated electron-hole pairs and elevate the catalysts' temperature, thus accelerating the reaction rate. The in-situ experiments revealed that light-induced electron transfer effectively facilitates H2 dissociation and enhances surface defects, thereby promoting CO2 adsorption. This study introduces a novel approach for developing photo-thermal catalysts for CO2 reduction, aiming to enhance solar energy utilization and facilitate interface electron transfer.

Abstract:Conversion of CO2 into fuels via solar energy would be a promising strategy to reduce CO2 emissions and produce value-added carbon compounds. However, the development of efficient light-harvesting and photocatalytic systems remains a significant challenge because of scarcity of low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts in CO2 conversion. Herein, a tunable selectivity in photothermal CO2 conversion was demonstrated over a series of Fe-based catalysts developed through a simple hydrogenation/carbonization treatment with commercial Fe3O4 as a precursor. The Fe3O4 catalyst demonstrated a full selectivity toward CO (about 100%) and 11.3 mmol g(-1) h(-1) activity for the photothermal catalytic conversion of CO2. More importantly, the purephase theta-Fe3C produced remarkably high selectivity toward hydrocarbon products (>97%) and superior activity (10.9 mmol g(-1) h(-1)) in the photothermal conversion of CO2. Meanwhile, it is found that the selectivity toward a hydrocarbon (CHx) can be modulated by the extent of hydrogenation/carbonization of the Fe3O4 precursor. In addition, we demonstrated the vital influence of the nonthermal effect on the enhanced catalytic performance with the Fe-based catalysts during the photothermal conversion of CO2.
Near‐Unity Photothermal CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol based on a Molecule/Nanocarbon Hybrid Catalyst

Abstract:Solar-driven CO2-to-methanol conversion provides an intriguing route for both solar energy storage and CO2 mitigation. For scalable applications, near-unity methanol selectivity is highly desirable to reduce the energy and cost endowed by low-value byproducts and complex separation processes, but so far has not been achieved. Here we demonstrate a molecule/nanocarbon hybrid catalyst composed of carbon nanotube-supported molecularly dispersed cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc/CNT), which synergistically integrates high photothermal conversion capability for affording an optimal reaction temperature with homogeneous and intrinsically-efficient active sites, to achieve a catalytic activity of 2.4 mmol gcat-1 h-1 and selectivity of ~99% in direct photothermal CO2 hydrogenation to methanol reaction. Both theoretical calculations and operando characterizations consistently confirm that the unique electronic structure of CoPc and appropriate reaction temperature cooperatively enable a thermodynamic favorable reaction pathway for highly selective methanol production. This work represents an important milestone towards the development of advanced photothermal catalysts for scalable and cost-effective CO2 hydrogenation.
