Abstract:In the photothermal synergistic catalytic conversion of CO2 and H2O, the catalyst harnesses solar energy to accumulate heat, thereby elevating the reaction system’s temperature. The influence of this temperature effect on surface chemical reactions remains an underexplored area. Here the impact of temperature on the surface-level thermodynamic reactions and conversion of CO2 with H2O on oxide semiconductors at the atomic scale was investigated using first-principle calculations. 13 different metal oxides and 5 transition metal clusters were used to introduce surface functional sites on the TiO2 supporting catalyst. The potential metal oxide cocatalysts that could be most beneficial to the following conversion of CO2 by H2O were initially screened by calculating the degrees of promotion of CO2 adsorption and activation of surface H to provide protons. The proton donation and hydrogen evolution difficulty from H2O were further analyzed, identifying transition metal cocatalysts that promote direct CO2 hydrogenation. Upon introducing bifunctional sites to facilitate adsorption and reduction, the production of CH3OH and CH4 could be further enhanced through the facilitation of the proton donation process of H2O. The results of Gibbs free-energy calculations revealed that increasing temperature enhances the reaction thermodynamics for each C1 product formation at different surface sites to varying degrees. These findings offer valuable theoretical insights for designing and regulating active sites on oxide semiconductor surfaces for efficient photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction by H2O.

Abstract:Photothermal catalytic CO2 hydrogenation to CH3OH with renewable H-2 is a promising method to convert solar energy into chemical energy. However, it is still impeded by limited CO2 conversion efficiency and poor CH3OH selectivity under mild conditions. Herein, we report a Ru/In2O3 catalyst for efficient and stable photothermal CH3OH production from CO2 hydrogenation under atmospheric pressure. The Ru/In2O3 catalyst delivers a remarkable solar CH3OH production of 280.4 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which is similar to 50 times higher than that of pure In2O3 under the same conditions and surpasses by far reported In2O3-based photothermal catalysts. Detailed characterizations demonstrate that the synergy of photothermal heating effect and hot-carriers-induced activation of reactants on Ru together with the interaction between Ru and In2O3 enhances the activation of CO2 and H-2. Moreover, Ru modulates the electronic structure of In2O3 and promotes the generation of oxygen vacancies, which is favorable for the hydrogenation process to form CH3OH. This work paves a way for the rational design of efficient catalysts for solar CH3OH production from CO2 hydrogenation under mild conditions.

Abstract:Photo-assisted catalytic CO2 hydrogenation represents a promising route to convert CO2 into value-added chemicals under mild conditions, but challenges remain in the design and development of highly active and selective catalysts. Herein, we synthesized highly efficient catalysts comprising Rh nanoparticles supported on TiO2 nanosheets for photo-assisted catalytic CO2 hydrogenation, which achieved a high CO production rate of 20.6 mmol gcat –1 h–1 (5.15 mol gRh –1 h–1) with nearly 100 % selectivity and excellent stability at 250 °C under light irradiation, outperforming most reported metal-based catalysts. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the electrons transfer from Rh nanoparticles to TiO2, hinting a strong interaction between Rh and the TiO2 support. Under illumination, the accumulated hot electrons on TiO2 surfaces could effectively promote the activation of CO2 molecules. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy results revealed that formate was the critical intermediate in the reverse water–gas shift reaction process, and light irradiation could effectively facilitate the activation and conversion of reactants and intermediate species, thereby improving CO production. This work provides a new strategy for the integration of solar and thermal energy for an efficient RWGS reaction under mild conditions.

Abstract:Solar-induced photothermal catalysis of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising method for chemical CO2 conversion. Modification of the metal oxide catalyst surface, including the introduction of oxygen vacancies and the doping and loading of metal or metal oxides, has a considerable influence on the product selectivity of the CO2RR. The complete free energy profiles of the CO2RR pathway on modified anatase TiO2 (101) surfaces are calculated based on density functional theory. The modified surfaces enhance the adsorption of CO2, and competition between desorption and reduction of the key intermediates (CO*, HCOOH*, HCHO*, and CH3OH*) is crucial to the selectivity for the CO2RR to form C1 products. The loading of Au and the doping of MgO enhance the electron transfer between the key intermediates and the surface, as well as the internal electron transfer inside the key intermediates, which efficiently activates the key intermediates and significantly increases the CH4 selectivity of the CO2RR.

Abstract:Abstract Upcycling of CO 2 into fuels by virtually unlimited solar energy provides an ultimate solution for addressing the substantial challenges of energy crisis and climate change. In this work, we report an efficient nanostructured Ru/MnO x catalyst composed of well-defined Ru/MnO/Mn 3 O 4 for photo-thermal catalytic CO 2 hydrogenation to CH 4 , which is the result of a combination of external heating and irradiation. Remarkably, under relatively mild conditions of 200 °C, a considerable CH 4 production rate of 166.7 mmol g −1 h −1 was achieved with a superior selectivity of 99.5% at CO 2 conversion of 66.8%. The correlative spectroscopic and theoretical investigations suggest that the yield of CH 4 is enhanced by coordinating photon energy with thermal energy to reduce the activation energy of reaction and promote formation of key intermediate COOH* species over the catalyst. This work opens up a new strategy for CO 2 hydrogenation toward CH 4 .

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction into renewable hydrocarbon solar fuels is considered as a promising strategy to simultaneously address global energy and environmental issues. This study focused on the direct coupling of photocatalytic water splitting and thermocatalytic hydrogenation of CO2 in the conversion of CO2 -H2 O into fuels. Specifically, it was found that direct coupling of thermo- and photocatalysis over Au-Ru/TiO2 leads to activity 15 times higher (T=358 K; ca. 99 % CH4 selectivity) in the conversion of CO2 -H2 O into fuels than that of photocatalytic water splitting. This is ascribed to the promoting effect of thermocatalytic hydrogenation of CO2 by hydrogen atoms generated in situ by photocatalytic water splitting.
Efficient CO2 Reduction with H2O Via Photothermal Chemical Reaction Based on Au-MgO Dual Catalytic Site on TiO2

Abstract:Using solar energy for the conversion of H2O and CO2 into H-2, CO, CH4, and other solar fuels have attracted great interest worldwide. However, the greatest challenge is how to use both the light energy and the heat energy to improve the utilization efficiency of solar energy. Photo-thermal chemical reaction has been used for conversing H2O and CO2 into H-2, CO, CH4, and other solar fuels and improved by Au and MgO co-loaded TiO2(AuMgTi). The average yields of CO, H-2, and CH4 on AuMgTi were estimated to 45.495 umol/g, 45.072 umol/g, and 6.624 umol/g, respectively. Also, the selectivities of carbon-containing products increased from 29 % to 53.6 % when compared to P25. MgO on the surface of AuMgTi can enhance the chemisorption of CO2 and initiated the CO2 reduction reaction to converse CO2 into CO and CH4. Au can improve the utilization of visible light through the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) effect, and reduce the recombination rate of photogenerated carriers due to the existence of the Schottky barrier. Moreover, Au might act as a catalytically active center on the surface to assist in the formation of the intermediate groups and facilitate the reaction. This study demonstrated that the AuMgTi catalyst can effectively utilize full spectrum solar energy for CO2 reduction by photo-thermal chemical reaction.

Abstract:Photosynthesis is a potential strategy to enable endergonic process that usually needs high-temperature in thermochemistry to supply the energy for inert-bond activation and/or strong endothermic reaction. The conversion of CO2 into value-added C-2-oxygenates is a promising process to realize artificial photosynthesis, but suffers from relatively lower efficiency due to complex multi-electron (>= 10) transfer processes and sluggish kinetics of C-C coupling. This work proposes an all-new H2O-promoted strategy for efficient production of C-2 oxygenates from the concurrent activation and subsequent co-conversion of CO2 with CH4 under photo-thermal cooperation, in which photocatalytic H2O-splitting derived active hydrogen species for CO2 activation, and concomitant active oxygen species for CH4 activation. A formation rate of as high as 2.05 mmol g(-1) h(-1) for C-2-oxygenates (CH3CHO and CH3CH2OH) in a selectivity of > 86% has been afforded over SrTiOx supported CuCo under 200 degrees C and ultraviolet-visible illumination. It has been revealed that SrTiOx drives photocatalytic H2O-splitting under the excitation primary from ultraviolet light, paired Cu-I/Cu-0 sites promote the formation of *CHxO intermediate from CO2, Co sites conduct CH4-to-*CH3, and C-C coupling of *CHxO and *CH3 on adjacent Cu-Co facilitates the generation of C-2-oxygenates. Abstract:Solar-driven conversion of CO2 2 to high-value-added chemicals and fuels offers a practical route to alleviate CO2 2 emissions where photodriven catalytic CO2 2 hydrogenation toward lower olefins is a great challenge due to the crucial bottleneck of C-C coupling. Here, we report a K-promoted Ru/Fe3O4 3 O 4 catalyst that efficiently drives photo- thermal catalytic CO2 2 hydrogenation to lower olefins via the FischerTropsch-to-olefin process, where the production rate reaches 0.63 mmol g- 1 h-1- 1 with the highest olefin/paraffin ratio of 10.2. The formation of Ru-FeOx x at the interface of Ru nanoparticles and the Fe3O4 3 O 4 support plays a decisive role in forming C-C bonds and determining the hydrocarbon products. The photochemical contribution promotes electron transfer at the interface of K-promoted Ru/Fe3O4, 3 O 4 , significantly enhances the activation and dissociation of CO2, 2 , and abruptly inhibits the hydrogenation of olefins. Therefore, the product distribution and selectivity of olefins are distinctly different from those of the thermal catalysis process.

Abstract:There is an urgent need for technologies to combat acute global climate change. To tackle this challenging task, the research group aims to develop a novel catalyst to serve CO2, a kind of infamous greenhouse gas, as a sustainable carbon resource contributing to the green productions of fine chemicals. Here in this work, the heterojunction photocatalyst containing mesoporous TiO2 (m-TiO2) and α-Fe2O3 has been deployed for the conversion of CO2 and H2O into CH3OH at 300 °C. The photocatalysts are synthesized by the sol-gel method and characterized by various techniques to study their physical and chemical properties. The dark adsorption experiments for these as-prepared photocatalysts were carried out in the airtight gas cell from vacuum to different pressure gradients with CO2 at ambient temperature by the transmission mode of FTIR measurements. Moreover, the associated intermediate species of CO2 hydrogenation were identified by diffusive reflectance infrared techniques (DRIFT). By using CO2 temperature programmed desorption (TPD) analysis, the higher CO2 adsorption capacity of m-TiO2/α-Fe2O3 heterojunction (0.054 mmol/g) was confirmed than that of the α-Fe2O3 (0.017 mmol/g) and m-TiO2 (0.015 mmol/g).

Selective catalytic photoreduction of CO 2 on Pt/TiO 2 nanotube for renewable energy

Abstract:Carbon dioxide is one of the primary causes of global warming, and simultaneously, the world has to face the issue of fossil fuel shortage in the near future. One of the ideal solutions to both problems is that the selective catalytic photoreduction of CO 2 to produce high-potential carbon compounds, including CH 4, CO, CH 3OH, HCHO, HCOOH, etc.. The transformation of photo to chemical energy by a non-living photocatalyst could be more efficient than that of a bio-system, although the production of CO 2-free fuel by direct conversion of solar energy into chemical energy is still a challenge for researchers. In this work, a gas-solid heterogeneous system for selective catalytic photoreduction of CO 2 on Pt/TiO 2 nanotube for renewable energy was discussed. Low dimensional Pt/TiO 2 nanotube potocatalysts are synthesized and characterized with X-ray Diffraction, High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, Photoluminescence, CO pulse Chemisorptions, N 2 adsorption-desorption analysis at 77 K and X-ray Fluorescence spectrometry. The catalytic activity was tested in a fixed-bed photocatalysis reactor with the catalyst coated on the quartz plate with a 1 ìm thickness film and the CH 4 yield on the Pt/TiO 2 nanotube photocatalysts is more remarkable. It increased with the increase of the UV irradiation time and H 2O/CO 2 molar ratio, accumulating to about 26.8 μmol•h -1•gTi -1.
Efficient solar-driven: Photothermal catalytic reduction of atmospheric CO2 at the gas-solid interface by CuTCPP/MXene/TiO2

Abstract:Directly capturing atmospheric CO2 and converting it into valuable fuel through photothermal synergy is an effective way to mitigate the greenhouse effect. This study developed a gas-solid interface photothermal catalytic system for atmospheric CO2 reduction, utilizing the innovative photothermal catalyst (Cu porphyrin) CuTCPP/MXene/TiO2. The catalyst demonstrated a photothermal catalytic performance of 124 μmol·g-1·h-1 for CO and 106 μmol·g-1·h-1 for CH4, significantly outperforming individual components. Density functional theory (DFT) results indicate that the enhanced catalytic performance is attributed to the internal electric field between the components, which significantly enhances carrier utilization. The introduction of CuTCPP reduces free energy of the photothermal catalytic reaction. Additionally, the local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect and high-speed electron transfer properties of MXene further boost the catalytic reaction rate. This well-designed catalyst and catalytic system offer a simple method for capturing atmospheric CO2 and converting it in-situ through photothermal catalysis.

Abstract:Conversion of CO2 into fuels via solar energy would be a promising strategy to reduce CO2 emissions and produce value-added carbon compounds. However, the development of efficient light-harvesting and photocatalytic systems remains a significant challenge because of scarcity of low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts in CO2 conversion. Herein, a tunable selectivity in photothermal CO2 conversion was demonstrated over a series of Fe-based catalysts developed through a simple hydrogenation/carbonization treatment with commercial Fe3O4 as a precursor. The Fe3O4 catalyst demonstrated a full selectivity toward CO (about 100%) and 11.3 mmol g(-1) h(-1) activity for the photothermal catalytic conversion of CO2. More importantly, the purephase theta-Fe3C produced remarkably high selectivity toward hydrocarbon products (>97%) and superior activity (10.9 mmol g(-1) h(-1)) in the photothermal conversion of CO2. Meanwhile, it is found that the selectivity toward a hydrocarbon (CHx) can be modulated by the extent of hydrogenation/carbonization of the Fe3O4 precursor. In addition, we demonstrated the vital influence of the nonthermal effect on the enhanced catalytic performance with the Fe-based catalysts during the photothermal conversion of CO2.

Whereas the thermally-assisted photocatalysis by coupling utilization of solar energy and thermal energy has therefore provided a promising alternative strategy to boost the conversion of CO2 into high value-added synthetic fuels or chemicals under mild conditions. Herein, we will focus on the state-of-the-art advance in CO2 reduction to fuels by thermally-assisted photocatalysis, with emphases on the thermally-promoted principles, the thermal input patterns as well as the product distributions of CO2 reduction. In addition, some current challenges and perspectives will be discussed. This review not only gives a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of thermally-assisted photocatalytic CO2 reduction, but provides guidelines to other catalytic transformations (e.g. methane oxidation, nitrogen fixation, and organic coupling reactions) by integrating solar and thermal energy to enhance the reaction efficiency.

Tuning the Selectivity of Photothermal CO2 Hydrogenation Through Photo-Induced Interaction Between Ni Nanoparticles and TiO2

Abstract:Photothermal CO2 hydrogenation into value-added chemicals driven by abundant solar energy is a promising and sustainable approach for achieving carbon neutralization. Herein, we demonstrate the photo-induced interaction between Ni nanoparticles and TiO2 support (Ni@TiO2) for maneuvering the selectivity of photothermal CO2 hydrogenation. According to experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations, the formed strong metal-support interaction between Ni and TiO2 can significantly enhance the adsorption of key intermediate *CO for further hydrogenation, thus tuning the CO2 hydrogenation pathway toward CH4. Consequently, the Ni@TiO2 catalyst exhibits a CH4 production rate of 286.5 mmol gcat -1 h-1 with an 81.8% selectivity under full-spectrum solar light irradiation. Moreover, in situ experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations suggest that photothermal CO2 hydrogenation over Ni@TiO2 undergoes a stepwise hydrogenation pathway to methane. This work offers insights into a simple approach for designing efficient nonprecious metalbased CO2 methanation catalysts.
Guiding Effective Nanostructure Design for Photo-Thermochemical CO2 Conversion: from DFT Calculations to Experimental Verifications

Abstract:The solar photo-thermochemical cycle (PTC) for the conversion of CO2 into fuels over metal oxides is a novel and promising method to alleviate the increasing energy crisis and worsening global climate change. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the anatase (101) surface of TiO2 and M-doped TiO2 (M = Zn, Ni, and Cu) were performed to provide guidance for enhancing the PTC. Additionally, M-doped TiO2 films were produced using a sol-gel method and applied to the PTC for CO2 conversion to provide experimental verifications. A maximum, stable production of CO of 10.80μmol/g was achieved using Cu-doped TiO2, which was nearly 6.39-fold higher than the amount of CO produced by clean TiO2. The CO yield was in good agreement with the calculation results. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron spin resonance (ESR) were used to evaluate the crystal structures and morphologies. UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–visible DRS), photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses were also conducted to investigate the surface charge-transfer and reaction mechanisms. As a result, a complete cycle reaction mechanism for Cu-doped TiO2 was proposed. Several key factors of the mechanism were clarified, and an effective guide for nanostructure design was proposed.

Abstract:A gas–solid heterogeneous system for solar–chemical energy conversion of CO2-SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) with H2O on different nanostructure photocatalysts and the photocatalysis pathway were discussed. Different crystal phases and sizes of low-dimensional nano-TiO2 and Pt-metal supported photocatalysts are synthesized and characterized with X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence, CO pulse chemisorptions, N2 adsorption–desorption analysis at 77K and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The catalytic activity was tested in a fixed-bed photocatalysis reactor and the CH4 yield on the Pt/TiO2 nanotube photocatalysts is more remarkable. It increased with the increase of the UV irradiation time and accumulated to about 4.8μmolh−1gTi−1, enhanced as the increase of the reaction temperature and H2O/CO2 molar ratio as well.
