Abstract:Samarium diiodide (SmI 2 ) is a privileged, single-electron reductant deployed in diverse synthetic settings. However, generalizable methods for catalytic turnover remain elusive because of the well-known challenge associated with cleaving strong Sm III –O bonds. Prior efforts have focused on the use of highly reactive oxophiles to enable catalyst turnover. However, such approaches give rise to complex catalyst speciation and intrinsically limit the synthetic scope. Herein, we leveraged a mild and selective protonolysis strategy to achieve samarium-catalyzed, intermolecular reductive cross-coupling of ketones and acrylates with broad scope. The modularity of our approach allows rational control of selectivity based on solvent, p K a (where K a is the acid dissociation constant), and the samarium coordination sphere and provides a basis for future developments in catalytic and electrocatalytic lanthanide chemistry.

Abstract:Samarium is an efficient reducing agent, a radical generator in cyclization and a cascade addition reaction. Interestingly, samarium metal has crucial impact on numerous C-C and C-X (X = hetero atom) bond forming transformations. It has been established as an exceptional chemo-selective and stereoselective reagent. The reactivity of the samarium catalyst/reagent is remarkably enhanced in the presence of various additives, ligands and solvents through effective coordination and an increase in reduction potential. It has inherent character to act as electron donor for a wide range of transformations including the asymmetric version of various reactions. This review accentuates the developments in samarium-mediated/catalyzed asymmetric organic synthesis over the past 12 years, where the chirality has been induced from ligand, a nearby asymmetric center within the substrate or through coordination directed stereospecific reactions.

Abstract:Non-biological catalysts following the governing principles of enzymes are attractive systems to disclose unprecedented reactivities. Most of those existing catalysts feature an adaptable molecular recognition site for substrate binding that are prone to undergo conformational selection pathways. Herein, we present a non-biological catalyst that is able to bind substrates via the induced fit model according to in-depth computational calculations. The system, which is constituted by an inflexible substrate-recognition site derived from a zinc-porphyrin in the second coordination sphere, features destabilization of ground states as well as stabilization of transition states for the relevant iridium-catalyzed C-H bond borylation of pyridine. In addition, this catalyst appears to be most suited to tightly bind the transition state rather than the substrate. Besides these features, which are reminiscent of the action modes of enzymes, new elementary catalytic steps (i. e. C-B bond formation and catalyst regeneration) have been disclosed owing to the unique distortions encountered in the different intermediates and transition states.

Abstract:<p>High acidity and structural confinement are the pivotal elements in asymmetric acid catalysis. The recently introduced imidodiphosphorimidate (IDPi) Brønsted acids have met with remarkable success in combining those features, acting as powerful Brønsted acid catalysts and "silylium" Lewis acid precatalysts in numerous thus far inaccessible transformations. Substrates as challenging to activate as simple olefins were readily transformed, ketones were employed as acceptors in aldolizations allowing sub ppm level catalysis, whereas enolates of the smallest donor aldehyde, acetaldehyde, did not polymerize but selectively added a single time to a variety of acceptor aldehydes.</p>

Abstract:The appropriate catalysts can accelerate the reaction rate and effectively boost the efficient conversion of various molecules, which is of great importance in the study of chemistry, chemical industry, energy, materials and environmental science. Therefore, efficient, environmentally friendly, and easy to operate synthesis methods have been used to prepare various types of catalysts. Although previous studies have reported the synthesis and characterization of the aforementioned catalysts, more still remain in trial and error methods, without in-depth consideration and improvement of traditional synthesis methods. Here, we comprehensively summarize and compare the preparation methods of the trial-and-error synthesis strategy, structure-activity relationships and density functional theory (DFT) guided catalysts rational design for nanomaterials and atomically dispersed catalysts. We also discuss in detail the utilization of the nanomaterials and single atom catalysts for converting small molecules (H 2 O, O 2 , CO 2 , N 2 , etc.) into value-added products driven by electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and thermocatalysis. Finally, the challenges and outlooks of mass preparation and production of efficient and green catalysts through conventional trial and error synthesis and DFT theory are featured in accordance with its current development.

Abstract:Significance It is a major challenge in catalysis to uncover structure–performance relationships that drive the design and optimization of high-performance/low-cost catalysts. When one considers the number of potential elemental combinations for catalysts and then includes variables, such as particle size and elemental stoichiometry, the number of possibilities is daunting. There are also significant challenges facing the synthetic chemist, who is tasked with making and characterizing such complex architectures. Indeed, a way of substantially narrowing the field is essential. In this work, we introduce an effective approach that combines computational prediction, experimental verification using a well-defined nanomodel, and finally production of high-performance catalysts in bulk as a powerful tool for discovering and designing catalysts for energy conversion and storage.

Abstract:The recent development of photoredox and energy transfer catalysis has led to a significant expansion of visible light-driven chemical transformations. These methods have demonstrated exceptional efficiency in converting a wide range of substrates into radical intermediates and generating open-shell catalytic species. However, the simplification of catalytic systems and the direct generation of highly reactive radical organocatalysts through direct visible light irradiation from stable precatalysts remains largely an unrealized goal. This challenge is mainly due to the limited availability of precatalysts that are responsive to visible light. Herein, we introduce a new class of bench-stable dicationic disulfuranes, which release highly reactive thiyl radicals upon blue light excitation. Spectroscopic and computational studies reveal that this reactivity arises from a combination of structural features and intermolecular interactions. This family of molecules has been employed to catalyze radical cascades previously incompatible with photoredox conditions, enabling the efficient formation of 1,2-dioxolanes and 1,3-hydroxyketones in excellent yields and short reaction times.

Photoredox Catalysis Using Heterogenized Iridium Complexes*

Abstract:Heterogenized photoredox catalysts provide a path for sustainable chemical synthesis using highly tunable, reusable constructs. Here, heterogenized iridium complexes as photoredox catalysts were assembled via covalent attachment to metal oxide surfaces (ITO, ZrO2 , Al2 O3 ) in thin film or nanopowder constructs. The goal was to understand which materials provided the most promising constructs for catalysis. To do this, reductive dehalogenation of bromoacetophenone to acetophenone was studied as a test reaction for system optimization. All catalyst constructs produced acetophenone with high conversions and yields with the fastest reactions complete in fifteen minutes using Al2 O3 supports. The nanopowder catalysts resulted in faster and more efficient catalysis, while the thin film catalysts were more robust and easily reused. Importantly, the thin film constructs show promise for future photoelectrochemical and electrochemical photoredox setups. Finally, all catalysts were reusable 2-3 times, performing at least 1000 turnovers (Al2 O3 ), demonstrating that heterogenized catalysts are a sustainable catalyst alternative.

Abstract:Recent trends in catalysis are devoted to mimicking some peculiar features of enzymes like site selectivity, through functional group recognition, and substrate selectivity, through recognition of the entire surface of the substrate. The latter is a specific feature of enzymes that is seldomly present in homogeneous catalysis. Supramolecular catalysis, thanks to the self-assembly of simple subunits, enables the creation of cavities and surfaces whose confinement effects drive the preferential binding of a substrate among others with consequent substrate selectivity. The topic is an emerging field that exploits recognition phenomena to discriminate the reagents based on their size and shape. This review deals this cutting-edge field of research covering examples of supramolecular self-assembled molecular containers and catalysts operating in organic as well as aqueous media, with special emphasis for catalytic systems dealing with direct competitive experiments involving two or more substrates.
Singlets-Driven Photoredox Catalysts: Transforming Noncatalytic Red Fluorophores to Efficient Catalysts

Abstract:Red-light absorbing photoredox catalysts offer potential advantages for large-scale reactions, expanding the range of usable substrates and facilitating bio-orthogonal applications. While many red-light absorbing/emitting fluorophores have been developed recently, functional red-light absorbing photoredox catalysts are scarce. Many photoredox catalysts rely on long-lived triplet excited states (triplets), which can efficiently engage in single electron transfer (SET) reactions with substrates. However, triplets of π-conjugated molecules are often significantly lower in energy than photogenerated singlet excited states (singlets). Combined with the inherent low energy of red light, this could limit the reductive/oxidative powers. Here, we introduce a series of sustainable heavy atom–free photoredox catalysts based on red-light absorbing dibenzo-fused BODIPY. The catalysts consist of two covalently linked units: a dibenzo-fused BODIPY fluorophore and an electron donor, arranged orthogonally. Excitation of the dibenzoBODIPY unit induces charge separation (CS) from the donor to the dibenzoBODIPY unit, forming a radical pair (RP) state. Unlike the regular BODIPY counterparts, these catalysts do not form triplets. Instead, SET occurs from the high-energy singlet-born RP states, preventing energy loss and effectively utilizing the low-energy red light. The proximity of donor molecules allows efficient charge separation despite the CS being uphill in energy. The molecules demonstrate efficient catalysis of Atom Transfer Radical Addition (ATRA) reaction, yielding products with high yields ranging from 70% to 90%, while the molecule without a donor group does not exhibit catalytic activity. The mechanistic studies by transient absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy methods support the proposed mechanism. The study presents a new molecular design strategy for converting noncatalytic fluorophores to efficient photoredox catalysts operating in the red spectral region.

Abstract:Since Friedrich Wohler's groundbreaking synthesis of urea in 1828, organic synthesis over the past two centuries has predominantly relied on the exploration and utilization of chemical reactions rooted in two-electron heterolytic ionic chemistry. While one-electron homolytic radical chemistry is both rich in fundamental reactivities and attractive with practical advantages, the synthetic application of radical reactions has been long hampered by the formidable challenges associated with the control over reactivity and selectivity of high-energy radical intermediates. To fully harness the untapped potential of radical chemistry for organic synthesis, there is a pressing need to formulate radically different concepts and broadly applicable strategies to address these outstanding issues. In pursuit of this objective, researchers have been actively developing metalloradical catalysis (MRC) as a comprehensive framework to guide the design of general approaches for controlling over reactivity and stereoselectivity of homolytic radical reactions. Essentially, MRC exploits the metal-centered radicals present in open-shell metal complexes as on-electron catalysts for homolytic activation of substrates to generate metal-entangled organic radicals as the key intermediates to govern the reaction pathway and stereochemical course of subsequent catalytic radical processes. Different from the conventional two-electron catalysis by transition metal complexes, MRC operates through one-electron chemistry utilizing stepwise radical mechanisms.

Atomically Dispersed Catalysts: Precise Synthesis, Structural Regulation, and Structure–Activity Relationship

Abstract:Atomically dispersed catalysts (ADCs) have been diffusely researched for the development of advanced catalytic processes owing to their well-defined structure, high atomic utilization, and outstanding activity. Precisely decoding the intrinsic structures and coordination microenvironments of ADCs still confronts significant challenges. Overcoming these challenges is important for profound understanding of the structure–activity relationships and directing the future design of ADCs. Herein, this minireview summarizes recent progress and advanced characterization techniques for the engineering of ADCs, including single-atom catalysts, dual-atom catalysts, and atomic cluster catalysts with regard to precise synthesis, structural regulation, and the structure–performance relationship. The catalytic merits and regulation strategies of recent breakthroughs in energy conversion, enzyme mimicry, and organic synthesis are thoroughly discussed to disclose the catalytic mechanism-guided ADCs design. Finally, a comprehensive summary of the future challenges and potential prospects is presented to stimulate more design and application possibilities for ADCs. We believe that this comprehensive minireview will open up novel pathways for the widespread utilization of ADCs in diverse catalytic processes.

Abstract:Abstract: Catalytic transformations have been observed in every reaction to provide a specific product and to formulate regio and stereo-selective adducts in well-defined pathways. Among various catalytic processes used in current chemistry, tandem catalysis has been proven to be an effective technology by applying the technology for better and time-saving ways of production. It has shown its usability in various fields of research like organic reactions, inorganic salt extractions, isolation, and purification of intermediates, photoprotection of dye, pigment, and polymer chemistry, specifically in paint industries, biological sequencing and natural product chemistry. Ideally, it is a single molecule conversation to the desired product (beneficial to both research and industries) with many competing effects in spatial arrangement with almost no major equipment in operation. Abstract:Radical S-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM) enzymes utilize a [4Fe-4S] cluster to bind SAM and reductively cleave its carbon-sulfur bond to produce a highly reactive 5'-deoxyadenosyl (dAdo) radical. In almost all cases, the dAdo radical abstracts a hydrogen atom from the substrates or from enzymes, thereby initiating a highly diverse array of reactions. Herein, we report a change of the dAdo radical-based chemistry from hydrogen abstraction to radical addition in the reaction of the radical SAM enzyme NosL. This change was achieved by using a substrate analogue containing an olefin moiety. We also showed that two SAM analogues containing different nucleoside functionalities initiate the radical-based reactions with high efficiencies. The radical adduct with the olefin produced in the reaction was found to undergo two divergent reactions, and the mechanistic insights into this process were investigated in detail. Our study demonstrates a promising strategy in expanding radical SAM chemistry, providing an effective way to access nucleoside-containing compounds by using radical SAM-dependent reactions.

Abstract:Metalloradical catalysis (MRC), predominantly exemplified by metalloporphyrin complexes, has emerged as a promising strategy for regulating radical reactions and broadening their synthetic applications. In this paper, we report that cobaloxime complexes, functioning as a surrogate for metalloporphyrin systems, can mediate radical cyclopropanation of olefins using donor/acceptor‐type carbene precursor α‐aryl diazoacetates through the MRC process. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions, yielding cyclopropane derivatives in good yields with high diastereoselectivity. The reaction exhibits extensive substrate tolerance, encompassing gram‐scale transformations and the synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds. Our discoveries underscore the potential of cobaloxime‐catalyzed cyclopropanation as a valuable asset in organic syntheses and further expand the repertoire of metalloradical systems in catalysis.

Abstract:Abstract Sulfur-, selenium-, and silicon-centered radicals are versatile reaction intermediates in modern synthetic organic chemistry. These radicals are capable of adding to carbon–carbon multiple bonds such as alkene and arenes, thus introducing the corresponding elements into the products. These radicals can also serve as mediators of free-radical reactions, including as polarity-reversal catalysts, asymmetric catalysts, and halogen-atom abstraction agents, without these elements being incorporated into the products of the reactions. This chapter describes the utility of sulfur-, selenium-, and silicon-centered radicals in two sections. The first covers reactions involving incorporation of the corresponding elements into the products, while the second describes reactions using these radicals as catalysts or reagents to prepare products that do not contain the corresponding elements.
