Abstract:Pseudoinverses are ubiquitous tools for handling over- and under-determined systems of equations. For computational efficiency, sparse pseudoinverses are desirable. Recently, sparse left and right pseudoinverses were introduced, using 1-norm minimization and linear programming. We introduce several new sparse pseudoinverses by developing linear and semi-definite programming relaxations of the well-known Moore-Penrose properties.

Abstract:In this paper, we use the tools of nonabelian duality to formulate and prove a far-reaching generalization of the Stone-von Neumann Theorem to modular representations of actions and coactions of locally compact groups on elementary $ C^{\ast} $-algebras. This greatly extends the Covariant Stone-von Neumann Theorem for Actions of Abelian Groups recently proven by L. Ismert and the second author. Our approach is based on a new result about Hilbert $ C^{\ast} $-modules that is simple to state yet is widely applicable and can be used to streamline many previous arguments, so it represents an improvement -- in terms of both efficiency and generality -- in a long line of results in this area of mathematical physics that goes back to J. von Neumann's proof of the classical Stone-von Neumann Theorem.

Abstract:We use Cramer's formula for the inverse of a matrix and a combinatorial expression for the determinant in terms of paths of an associated digraph (which can be traced back to Coates) to give a combinatorial interpretation of Möbius inversion whenever it exists. Every Möbius coefficient is a quotient of two sums, each indexed by certain collections of paths in the digraph. Our result contains, as particular cases, previous theorems by Hall (for posets) and Leinster (for skeletal categories whose idempotents are identities). A byproduct is a novel expression for the magnitude of a metric space as sum over self-avoiding paths with finitely many terms. By means of Berg's formula, our main constructions can be extended to Moore-Penrose pseudoinverses, yielding an analogous combinatorial interpretation of Möbius pseudoinversion and, consequently, of the magnitude of an arbitrary finite category.

Abstract:This article presents a proof of the Feldman-Moore theorem on Cartan subalgebras in W*-algebras based on the non-commutative Stone equivalence between Boolean inverse semigroups and Boolean groupoids. The proof is decomposed into two parts. The first part writes the W*-algebra as the W*-algebra of the Weyl twist of the Cartan subalgebra. The second part is an extension to separable measure inverse semigroups of the realization of a separable measure algebra by a standard measure space.

Abstract:We show the failure of a matricial version of Grothendieck's theorem for operator spaces, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the field. Moreover, by showing that such a counterexample can occur in the simplest context of commutative $C^*$-algebras, we address some other open questions in operator algebras. Our constructions, completely explicit and fairly simple, are inspired by some techniques in quantum information theory.

Abstract:We give a constructive characterization of matrices satisfying the reverse-order law for the Moore--Penrose pseudoinverse. In particular, for a given matrix $A$ we construct another matrix $B$, of arbitrary compatible size and chosen rank, in terms of the right singular vectors of $A$, such that the reverse order law for $AB$ is satisfied. Moreover, we show that any matrix satisfying this law comes from a similar construction. As a consequence, several equivalent conditions to $B^+ A^+$ being a pseudoinverse of $AB$ are given, for example $\mathcal{C}(A^*AB)=\mathcal{C}(BB^*A^*)$ or $B\left(AB\right)^+A$ being an orthogonal projection. In addition, we parameterize all possible SVD decompositions of a fixed matrix and give Greville-like equivalent conditions for $B^+A^+$ being a $\{1,2\}$-,$\{1,2,3\}$- and $\{1,2,4\}$-inverse of $AB$, with a geometric insight in terms of the principal angles between $\mathcal{C}(A^*)$ and $\mathcal{C}(B)$.

A noncommutative analogue of the Peskine--Szpiro Acyclicity Lemma

Abstract:We present a variant of the Peskine--Szpiro Acyclicity Lemma, and hence a way to certify exactness of a complex of finite modules over a large class of (possibly) noncommutative rings. Specifically, over the class of Auslander regular rings. In the case of relative $\mathscr{D}_{X}$-modules, for example $\mathscr{D}_{X}[s_{1}, \dots, s_{r}]$-modules, the hypotheses have geometric realizations making them easier to authenticate. We demonstrate the efficacy of this lemma and its various forms by: independently recovering some results related to Bernstein--Sato polynomials; establishing a new result about quasi-free structures of free multi-derivations of hyperplane arrangements.

Abstract:The concept of $\ell_{\Phi}$-decomposition, extending the concept of $\ell_{p}$-decomposition of a Banach space, is presented and basic properties of Schauder-Orlicz decompositions and $\ell_{\Phi}$-decompositions are studied. We show that Schauder-Orlicz decompositions are orthogonal in a sense of Grinblyum-James and Singer. Simple constructions of $\ell_{p}$-decompositions and Schauder-Orlicz decompositions in $L_p$ are presented. We prove that in the class of spaces possessing pseudo-Daugavet property, which includes classical $L_p$, $1\leq p\neq 2$, and $C$, Schauder-Orlicz decompositions with at least one finite dimensional subspace do not exist. It follows that Kato theorem on similarity for sequences of projections [1] cannot be extended to spaces from this class. Moreover we show that Banach spaces, possessing Schauder-Orlicz decompositions with at least one finite dimensional subspace, do not have pseudo-Daugavet property. Thus for Banach spaces $X$ possessing Schauder-Orlicz decompositions we obtain the following characterization of pseudo-Daugavet property: $X$ has pseudo-Daugavet property if and only if there is no Schauder-Orlicz decomposition in $X$ with at least one finite dimensional subspace if and only if there is no Schauder-Orlicz decomposition in $X$, which is an FDD.

Abstract:This expository article is based on two lectures given by the first author at the Fields Institute in the Fall 2021 Thematic Program on Trends in Pure and Applied Model Theory. We give a detailed proof of a qualitative version of the Mallaris-Shelah regularity lemma for stable graphs using only basic local stability theory and an ultraproduct construction. This proof strategy was first established by Malliaris and Pillay, and later simplified by Pillay. We provide some further simplifications, and also explain how the pseudofinite approach can be used to obtain a qualitative strengthening (compared to previous proofs) in terms of "functional error". To illustrate the extra leverage obtained by functional error, we give an elementary argument for extracting equipartitions from arbitrary partitions.
The missing proof of Paley's theorem about lacunary coefficients

Abstract:We modify the standard proof of Paley's theorem about lacunary coefficients of functions in $H^1$ to work without analytic factorization. This leads to the first direct proof of the extension of Paley's theorem that we applied to the former Littlewood conjecture about $L^1$ norms of exponential sums.

Abstract:During the last decade the Subspace Theorem found several quite unexpected applications, mainly in the Diophantine Analysis and in the Transcendence Theory. Among the great variety of spectacular results, I have chosen several which are technically simpler and which allow one to appreciate how miraculously does the Subspace Theorem emerge in numerous situations, implying beautiful solutions to difficult problems hardly anybody hoped to solve so easily. The three main topics discussed in this article are: the work of Adamczewski and Bugeaud on complexity of algebraic numbers; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on Diophantine equations with power sums; the work of Corvaja and Zannier on integral points on curves and surfaces, and the subsequent development due to Levin and Autissier. In particular, we give a complete proof of the beautiful theorem of Levin and Autissier: an affine surface with 4 (or more) properly intersecting ample divisors at infinity cannot have a Zariski dense set of integral points.

A new interpretation of the weighted pseudoinverse and its applications

Abstract:Consider the generalized linear least squares (GLS) problem $\min\|Lx\|_2 \ \mathrm{s.t.} \ \|M(Ax-b)\|_2=\min$. The weighted pseudoinverse $A_{ML}^†$ is the matrix that maps $b$ to the minimum 2-norm solution of this GLS problem. By introducing a linear operator induced by $\{A, M, L\}$ between two finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, we show that the minimum 2-norm solution of the GLS problem is equivalent to the minimum norm solution of a linear least squares problem involving this linear operator, and $A_{ML}^†$ can be expressed as the composition of the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverse of this linear operator and an orthogonal projector. With this new interpretation, we establish the generalized Moore-Penrose equations that completely characterize the weighted pseudoinverse, give a closed-form expression of the weighted pseudoinverse using the generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD), and propose a generalized LSQR (gLSQR) algorithm for iteratively solving the GLS problem. We construct several numerical examples to test the proposed iterative algorithm for solving GLS problems. Our results highlight the close connections between GLS, weighted pseudoinverse, GSVD and gLSQR, providing new tools for both analysis and computations.

Abstract:Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey posed the problem of counting the number of subspaces which have a given profile with respect to a linear endomorphism defined on a finite vector space. Several special cases of this problem have been solved in the literature. We settle this problem in full generality by giving an explicit counting formula in terms of symmetric functions. This formula can be expressed compactly in terms a Hall scalar product involving dual $q$-Whittaker functions and another symmetric function that is determined by conjugacy class invariants of the linear endomorphism. As corollaries, we obtain new combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients in the $q$-Whittaker expansions of several symmetric functions. These include the power sum, complete homogeneous, products of modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials and certain products of $q$-Whittaker functions. These results are used to derive a formula for the number of anti-invariant subspaces (as defined by Barría and Halmos) with respect to an arbitrary operator. We also give an application to an open problem in Krylov subspace theory.

Abstract:We present new additive results for the pseudo core inverse in a Banach algebra with involution. The necessary and sufficient conditions under which the sum of two pseudo core invertible elements in Banach *-algebra is pseudo core invertible are obtained. As an application, the pseudo core invertibility for block complex matrices is investigated. These extend the main results of pseudo core invertibility of Gao and Chen [Comm. Abstract:We give a new geometric proof of a theorem of Heuer showing that, in the presence of letter-quasimorphisms (which are analogues of real-valued quasimorphisms with image in free groups), and in particular in RAAGs, there is a sharp lower bound of 1/2 for stable commutator length. Our approach is to show that letter-quasimorphisms give rise to negatively curved angle structures on admissible surfaces. This generalises Duncan and Howie's proof of the 1/2-lower bound in free groups, and can also be seen as a version of Bavard duality for letter-quasimorphisms.
