Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the influence of retention-form design of resin bonded fixed partial dentures (RBFPDs). METHODS:Forty-five metal replicas of posterior metal RBFPDs were divided into 3 groups(n=15):C shape(control group), C shape + axial groove, C shape + pin hole. All the replicas were luted with Panavia F cement and subgroup of 5 specimens were subject to 70 N compressive load cycling for 0 cycles, 240,000 cycles , and 1,200,000 cycles respectively .Half of the cycles was on the central fossa of the pontics and half on the buccal inclined surface of the lingual cusp. Forces for dislodgment of the specimens were applied along the long axis of the abutment at a cross head speed of 1.0 mm /min. The separation forces were recorded as maximum retention force at the time of dislodgement. RESULTS:Separation forces of the C shape group (566.82+/-71.59 N)0.05). After 1,200,000 cycles, the retention force of the RBFPDs decreased significantly (P<0.001). CONCLUSION:To compare with axial groove, the design of pinhole retention form was conduced to the improvement of the retention force and durability of RBFPDs.
Marginal fit and retention force of zirconia resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses in the posterior region with different designs

Abstract:Background/purpose: Retainer debonding of resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) is one of the major reasons for their lower survival rates than fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) with full-coverage crowns. Recent advances in milling technology have enabled the fabrication of RBFDPs with complex retainers (D-shaped designs). This study aimed to assess the marginal fit and retention force of zirconia RBFDPs with inlay-, L-, and D-shaped designs to clarify their clinical applications. Materials and methods: Three abutment teeth models without maxillary second premolars were created using inlay-, L-, and D-shaped retainer designs. The zirconia RBFDPs were designed and fabricated according to the manufacturer's instructions (n = 10). The marginal gap was measured using the silicone replica technique. Zirconia frameworks were bonded to the abutment teeth using resin cement. Tensile test was conducted after thermal cycling and dynamic loading tests. The loads during debonding or fracture were recorded. The failure pattern was analyzed by observing the fracture surface using a scanning electron microscope. Results: D-shaped RBFDPs showed a significantly larger marginal gap than inlay- and L-shaped RBFDPs (P < 0.05). However, the mean marginal values were clinically acceptable (<120 μm). The D-shaped model exhibited the highest tensile strength in the tensile tests. The inlay-shaped and most of the D-shaped RBFDPs experienced debonding with cohesive failure, whereas the L-shaped RBFDPs showed fractures near the connector. Conclusion: The D-shaped retainer design was superior to the inlay- and L-shaped designs with respect to the inhibition of retainer debonding. However, the marginal fitness needs to be improved.
Retentive Characteristics of a Polyetheretherketone Post-Core Restoration with Polyvinylsiloxane Attachments

Abstract:A new application of a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) post-core restoration combined with polyvinylsiloxane (PVS) attachments was proposed and substantiated. This study aimed to evaluate retentive characteristics of the PEEK post-core restoration with PVS attachment systems. Specimens with PVS attachments were fabricated to evaluate retention force during 10,000 cyclic dislodgements. Additionally, the retention forces of PVS attachments with three different values of Shore hardness were further measured before and after aging treatments. The results of cyclic dislodgement test indicated a strong negative linear relationship between the cyclic times and retention force (p < 0.0001, r = −0.957). Furthermore, the retention forces of the PVS were significantly improved with Shore hardness increased, which was also affected by the aging treatment (F (2, 138) = 10.95, p < 0.0001). Therefore, the PEEK post-core restoration with PVS attachments exhibited the favorable retention force, which could be a promising alternative for dental prostheses.

Influence of Resin Cement Thickness and Elastic Modulus on the Stress Distribution of Zirconium Dioxide Inlay-Bridge: 3D Finite Element Analysis

Abstract:The mechanical properties and the thickness of the resin cement agents used for bonding inlay bridges can modify the clinical performance of the restoration such as debonding or prosthetic materials fracture. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the stress distribution and the maximum strain generated by resin cements with different elastic moduli and thicknesses used to cement resin-bonded fixed partial denture (RBFPD). A three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) was used, and a 3D model was created based on a Cone-Beam Computed Tomography system (CBCT). The model was analyzed by the Ansys software. The model fixation occurred at the root of the abutment teeth and an axial load of 300 N was applied on the occlusal surface of the pontic. The highest stress value was observed for the Variolink 0.4 group (1.76 × 106 Pa), while the lowest was noted for the Panavia 0.2 group (1.07 × 106 Pa). Furthermore, the highest total deformation value was found for the Variolink 0.2 group (3.36 × 10−4 m), while the lowest was observed for the Panavia 0.4 group (2.33 × 10−4 m). By means of this FEA, 0.2 mm layer Panavia F2.0 seemed to exhibit a more favorable stress distribution when used for cementation of posterior zirconium-dioxide-based RBFPD. However, both studied materials possessed clinically acceptable properties.

Abstract:Purpose The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of various surface treatments and production methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) between reline material and denture base resins. Materials and Methods One‐hundred‐twenty specimens were produced using conventional heat‐polymerization, subtractive, and additive techniques. Each group consisted of 40 specimens. The specimens were divided into four subgroups, each with 10 samples, for surface treatments. These subgroups were: (1) Control‐only monomer application, (2) 50 μm airborne‐particle abrasion, (3) 110 μm airborne‐particle abrasion, and (4) Roughening with tungsten carbide bur. Representative specimens from each subgroup were examined under SEM. Then, auto‐polymerized resin was condensed in the center of the specimens. Specimens were subjected to thermal aging (5000 cycles at 5–55°C). The SBS test was conducted and failure loads were recorded. The data were evaluated by two‐way ANOVA and Tukey pairwise multiple comparisons method (p < 0.05). Results The additively produced group showed significantly lower SBS than conventional and subtractive groups (p < 0.001), with no significant differences between the subtractive and conventional groups. Specimens that underwent monomer application only showed the lowest SBS among surface treatments, while 50 μm airborne‐particle abrasion showed the highest SBS. Based on the partial eta‐squared analysis results, the surface treatment mainly impacted SBS. Conclusions Among the surface treatment methods, treating denture bases with 50 μm airborne‐particle abrasion is more effective for maintaining adhesion, especially in the additive technique.

Effect of surface finish and resin cement on the bond strength to CAD-CAM ceramics for interim resin-bonded prostheses

Abstract:Statement of problem: Resin-bonded prostheses, including interim resin-bonded prostheses, are effective in preserving tooth structure compared with other types of fixed dental prostheses for the replacement of missing teeth. However, loss of retention remains a notable concern with these types of prostheses. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the influence of glass-ceramic type, resin type, and surface finish on the shear bond strength (SBS) to the CAD-CAM ceramics used to fabricate interim resin-bonded prostheses. Material and methods: Eighty 10×2-mm glass-ceramic disks were fabricated by using a diamond saw (IsoMet 1000), 40 from feldspathic porcelain blocks (Vita Mark II) and 40 from lithium disilicate blocks (IPS e.max CAD). Half of the specimens in each group were left with a dull or matte surface finish after cutting, while the other half were glazed with an add-on glaze (VitaAkzento Plus Glaze Spray and IPS e.max CAD Glaze Spray, respectively). The disks were mounted in acrylic resin, and each group was subdivided into 2, with 1 receiving a photopolymerized resin cement (RelyX Veneer) and the other receiving a flowable composite resin (Filtek Supreme Ultimate Flow) to form 2.38×2-mm cylinders. SBS was determined using a universal testing machine (Instron 4411) in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 29022:2013 standard, and failure modes were analyzed by using a stereomicroscope with ×40 magnification. The data were analyzed with a 3-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc analysis. The chi-squared test was used to analyze the failure mode (α=.05 for all tests). Results: Ceramic type, resin type, and surface finish significantly impacted SBS (P<.001, P=.003, P<.001, respectively). Lithium disilicate showed higher SBS than feldspathic porcelain, and flowable composite resin exhibited higher SBS than resin cement. Glazed surfaces displayed lower SBS compared with the dull or matte surfaces. The combinations among the 3 materials also impacted SBS (P=.03). In addition, the combinations between ceramic type and surface finish affected SBS (P<.001), regardless of resin cement type. No other combinations affected the SBS (P>.05). The mode of failure was different among the groups (P<.001). In comparison with all other groups, cohesive failures were most prevalent in feldspathic porcelain with a dull or matte surface finish, regardless of the resin type used. Conclusions: The SBS to glass-ceramics was influenced by ceramic material, resin cement type, and surface finish. Flowable composite resin showed higher SBS than resin cement. A dull or matte surface finish exhibited greater bond strength than a glazed surface. Lithium disilicate had higher SBS than feldspathic porcelain.
Influence of tooth preparation taper and cement type on recementation strength of complete metal crowns

Abstract:Statement of problem: Clinical studies have shown that lack of retention is one of the major causes of fixed dental prosthesis failure. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the convergence angle of a complete metal crown tooth preparation and the recementation strength for restorations cemented with conventional and adhesive cements. Material and methods: One hundred twenty artificial crowns were cast for standardized complete metal crown tooth preparations accomplished with the use of a milling machine on extracted human teeth. Three different tapers, 5, 12, and 25 degrees, were used (n=40). The crowns in each group were subdivided into 4 subgroups (n=10) according to the luting cement: zinc phosphate cement (Fleck's), glass ionomer cement (Ketac-Cem), and adhesive resin cements (Panavia 21 and C&B-Metabond). Retention was evaluated by measuring the tensile force required to dislodge the crowns from the tooth preparations in a universal testing machine. Subsequently, the tooth preparations were scraped clean and polished with prophylaxis paste, and the intaglio surfaces of the artificial crowns were ultrasonically cleaned and airborne-particle abraded with 50-mum aluminum oxide powder prior to recementation. The data were analyzed with 3-way repeated-measures ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test (alpha=.05). Results: Analysis of measurements disclosed a significant difference for taper and luting cement (P<.001); however, their interaction was not significant. Also, there was a statistically significant difference between the retention of the first cementation and the second cementation (P<.001). However, the interaction was not significant with taper or cement. Regardless of the taper used, Panavia 21 cement exhibited the highest mean initial retention, but the difference was not significantly different from the recementation retentive strength. Conclusions: Tooth preparation taper and type of luting cement had a direct effect on the recementation strength of complete metal crowns.

Abstract:Background: Recently, prosthodontic approaches involve more conservative procedures that include less invasive finish line preparations that use less ceramic thickness. Aim of the study: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of vertical preparation and modified vertical preparation designs on the marginal adaptation and fracture resistance of two types of ceramic crowns using CAD/CAM technology. Materials and methods: Two typodont maxillary first premolars were embedded in acrylic resin. Forty positive replicas of epoxy resin dies were used that were divided into two groups depending on the preparation design (n = 20); Group V (Vertical): dies with feather edge finish line and Group MV (Modified vertical): dies with feather edge finish line, where a reverse shoulder of 1 mm depth was placed on the buccal surface 1.5 mm from the occlusal surface. Each group was further subdivided into two subgroups according to the type of ceramic material (n = 10): Subgroup Va and subgroup MVa for lithium disilicate (e.max CAD) and subgroup Vb and subgroup MVb for zirconia (zolid ht+). Crown restorations were made with CAD-CAM technology. The marginal adaptation was assessed using a stereomicroscope both prior to cementation and after cementation and aging. Fracture resistance was tested with a universal testing machine, and the data were statistically analyzed. Results: Marginal adaptation showed no significant differences between subgroups before or after cementation and aging. Three-way ANOVA indicated that preparation design (p = 0.516) and material (p = 0.269) had no significant effect, but cementation had a significant effect (p < 0.0001) on the marginal adaptation. According to two-way ANOVA test, Subgroup (MVb) showed the highest result followed by subgroup (Vb) and subgroub (MVa) and the least was subgroub (Va). Fracture modes showed no significant differences among the subgroups (p = 0.982). Conclusions: Marginal adaptation of lithium disilicate and zirconia crowns remained clinically acceptable regardless of preparation design. While the modified vertical preparation with a reverse shoulder notably enhanced the fracture resistance of both materials, with zirconia demonstrating superior fracture resistance compared to lithium disilicate with average values exceeding premolar biting force.
Effect of preparation design on fracture strength of compromised molars restored with direct composite resin restorations: An in vitro and finite element analysis study

Abstract:Statement of problem: More data are needed on the influence of preparation design on the fracture strength, failure type, repairability, and polymerization-induced cracks of molar teeth restored with direct composite resin restorations. Purpose: This in vitro and finite element analysis study investigated the effect of different preparation designs on fracture strength, failure type, repairability, tooth deformation, and the formation of polymerization-induced cracks of compromised molars restored with direct composite resin restorations. Material and methods: Human molars (n=64) were randomly assigned to 4 different preparation designs: undermined inlay (UI), extended inlay (EI), restricted overlay (RO), and extended overlay (EO). The teeth were restored using direct composite resin and subjected to artificial thermomechanical aging in a mastication simulator, followed by load-to-failure testing. Three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis was conducted to assess tooth deformation. Polymerization-induced cracks were evaluated using optical microscopy and transillumination. The fracture strength data were analyzed using a Kruskal-Wallis test, while the failure mode, repairability, and polymerization cracks were analyzed using the Fisher exact test (α=.05). Results: All specimens withstood thermomechanical aging, and no statistically significant difference in fracture strength was observed among the 4 preparation designs (P>.05). The finite element analysis showed differences in tooth deformation, but no correlation was observed with in vitro fracture resistance. The RO and EO groups presented significantly more destructive failures compared with the UI and EI groups (P<.01). The RO group had significantly fewer repairable failures than the UI and EI groups (P=.024). A correlation was found between higher frequencies of repairability and higher tooth deformation. A significant correlation between the increase in microfractures and preparation design was observed (P<.01), with the UI group exhibiting a higher increase in microfracture size compared with the EO group (P<.05). Conclusions: No influence of preparation design on the fracture strength of compromised molars restored with direct composite resin restorations was evident in this study, but the failure mode of cusp coverage restorations was more destructive and often less repairable. The finite element analysis showed more tooth deformation in inlay preparations, with lower stresses within the root, leading to more reparable fractures. Since cusp coverage direct composite resin restorations fractured in a more destructive manner, this study suggests that even a tooth with undermined cusps should be restored without cusp coverage.

Abstract:Background Restorative dentists frequently deal with the prosthesis coming loose after placing multiple crowns. The luting cement holds indirect restorations to the prepared tooth. However, the success of the restorations is impacted by mastication pressures and other undesired factors. Therefore, escape is required to increase the crown's life. Mechanical locking of the prepared tooth surface is one technique to address this issue, in addition to cement adherence, to extend the life of the restoration. Aims and objective The objective of the study was to evaluate the influence of surface roughness of prepared teeth on the retention of metal crowns. Methodology This in-vitro investigation was carried out on freshly extracted maxillary first premolars that were defect-free and had the same crown size. Using multiple grifts of varied coarseness, different surface roughness was created, allowing for the observation of an important factor like retention (black at 180-250 µm [micrometer], blue at 125-150 µm, green at 106-125 µm, red at 53-63 µm, yellow at 20-30 µm). Results IBM Corp. Released 2011. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 20.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp. was used to perform the statistical analysis. Compounds were done before it began to guarantee that the study would have 80% power. There is a mean and a standard deviation for each quantitative variable. A one-way ANOVA was used for quantitative variables, and Tukey's post hoc analysis was conducted afterward. A probability value of less than 0.05 was used to determine statistical significance. According to the statistical findings, the prosthesis's retentive qualities improve as coarseness increases. Conclusion The resistance and retention form of the preparation is critical to the longevity of the prosthesis, based on the findings of the previously described study. Surface roughness, pins, slots, grooves, and other preparation modifications can enhance retention on the prepared tooth surface. The research findings indicate no need to polish the prepared tooth surface.
Biomechanical Analysis of Stress Distribution and Failure Risk in Mandibular Incisors Restored with Resin-Bonded Fixed Partial Dentures Using CAD/CAM Materials and Restoration Designs

Abstract:BackgroundComputer-aided design/manufacturing (CAD/CAM) materials are widely used in resin-bonded fixed partial dentures (RBFPDs), but their suitability across different designs has not been fully assessed. This study compares the stress distribution and failure probability of mandibular incisors restored by RBFPDs with various CAD/CAM materials.Materials and methodsFinite-element models of single- and double-ended RBFPDs were created using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) data. Five CAD/CAM materials (IPS e.max CAD, IPS e.max ZirCAD, Vita Enamic, Lava Ultimate, Vitablocs MarkII) were tested under vertical and oblique (45°) loading with a 100 N force. Stress distribution and failure risk were evaluated for each material and design.ResultsOblique loading produced the highest stress and displacement for single-ended RBFPDs. Lava Ultimate had the largest displacement and principal stress, while IPS e.max ZirCAD showed the highest equivalent stress. IPS e.max CAD exhibited the lowest displacement and principal stress among double-ended RBFPDs under oblique loading.ConclusionThis study demonstrated that double-ended RBFPDs experience lower stress and strain compared to single-ended designs, particularly under oblique loading. Vita Enamic had the highest failure risk, while IPS e.max ZirCAD had the lowest. These insights into stress distribution and material performance offer valuable guidance for material selection and restoration design, aiming to improve the longevity and success of RBFPDs in mandibular incisor restorations.
Retentive characteristics of individual and prefabricated polyvinylsiloxane overdenture attachments: alternative treatment options for geriatric patients

Abstract:Objectives: Stud attachments are often too adhesive and too susceptible to damage for use in geriatric patients, especially when implants are angulated. This study aimed to evaluate alternative anchoring systems comprising individual and prefabricated polyvinylsiloxane (PVS) attachments. Materials and methods: A total of 182 specimens with individual PVS (IPVS) attachments (Shore hardness [SH] 25, SH50, SH65], prefabricated PVS (PPVS) attachments (SM green, yellow, and red), and Locator attachments (LR blue) were fabricated (n = 7 per group). Retention force was measured using the following parameters: insertion/removal (100, 200, 500, 1000, and 5000 cycles), thermal undulation (10,000 cycles at 5-55 °C; one implant per specimen), implant angulation (0°, 5°, and 10° convergence and divergence; two implants per specimen), and artificial saliva. Results: Insertion/removal and thermal undulation caused no changes in retention force in SM green and IPVS subgroups; conversely, LR blue, SM red, and SM yellow attachments exhibited significant decreases in retention force of up to 66% (all P ≤ 0.001). Implant angulation produced relevant changes in retention force only in LR blue attachments. Artificial saliva caused a general decrease in retention force. Conclusions: Retention force of low-retentive PVS attachments proved to be comparatively immune to dislocation and thermal undulation, as well as to implant angulation up to 10°. Clinical relevance: Low-retentive PVS attachments could be a treatment option if reduced denture retention is required and/or if angulated implants are in place. Clinical studies are necessary to evaluate the materials' durability under oral conditions.
The Effect of Bonding Surface Design on Shear Bond Strength of 3D-Printed Orthodontic Attachments

Abstract:Introduction: This study compared the shear bond strength (SBS) of four innovative designs of the bonding surface of 3D-printed orthodontic attachments with conventional mesh design. Methods: In this in vitro study, the bonding surface design in different groups was as follows: Group 1, flat surface without any feature as a negative control; Group 2, concentric circles with no cuts; Group 3, concentric circles with 16 radial cuts; Group 4, concentric circles with 32 radial cuts; Group 5, small cones with a flat end and rounded edges; Group 6, mesh-based commercially available metal brackets of the maxillary central incisor (standard edgewise, Dentaurum®) as a positive control (n = 20). In Groups 1-5, attachments were designed with SolidWorks® Software and printed with a 2K DLP-LCD printer with hard tough resin (eSun®). All the samples were bonded to the restorative composite resin (Solafil®) surfaces with orthodontic composite resin (CuRAY-ECLIPSE®). The samples were examined for SBS with a universal testing machine after thermocycling (1,000 cycles of 5‒55°C). Data were analyzed with Shapiro-Wilk, one-way ANOVA, and Bonferroni tests. The statistical significance level was set at 0.05. Results: The mean SBS was significantly different between all the groups (P < 0.001) except for Groups 2 and 5 (P = 1.00) and Groups 2 and 6 (P = 1.00). Group 4 had the highest mean of SBS. Conclusion: The bonding surface design significantly influenced the SBS of orthodontic attachments. The concentric circles with 32 cuts had higher bond strength than other designs and can be suggested as a new bonding surface design for orthodontic attachments.

Abstract:Purpose: Factors affecting the retention of fixed prostheses to natural abutments are well understood. In contrast, little is known concerning factors influencing the retention of fixed prostheses cemented to implant abutments. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that varying implant abutment wall height, platform size, and screw access channel filling method has on the retention of castings cemented to implant abutments using TempBond. Materials and methods: Four 15 degrees preangled abutments (Nobel Biocare Replace Select Esthetic) of each platform size--narrow (NP), regular (RP), and wide (WP)--were used. In each group of abutments the screw access axial wall was either unadjusted, one-third removed, two-thirds removed, or completely removed. The screw access channels were either fully or partially filled with Memosil, a vinyl polysiloxane impression material. For each abutment a casting was constructed that incorporated an attachment to allow removal. Castings were cemented to abutments with TempBond. The tensile force required to separate the cemented castings from the abutments was measured using an Instron Universal load-testing machine. Results: The mean peak removal force for comparable abutments was significantly different ( p < 0.05): (1) where the screw access channel was completely filled with Memosil compared with those partially filled with Memosil; (2) with platform sizes--WP > RP > NP; (3) with alteration of axial wall height--1/3 removed > unadjusted = 2/3 removed > total wall removal. Conclusions: The retention of castings cemented to implant abutments with TempBond is influenced by the wall height, platform size, and the filling modality of the screw access channel.
Mechanical Properties of 3D Printed Orthodontic Retainers

Abstract:Orthodontic retention is the final important stage of orthodontic treatment, the aim of which is to consolidate the functional and aesthetic position of teeth. Among adults, fixed retainers made of different types of wires are the most common. The aim of this study was to analyse the mechanical properties of a new generation of fixed orthodontic retainers-printed by 3D printers. Materials and methods: The study was conducted using samples made of Nextdent MFH C&B N1 resin in the form of cuboid bars with nominal dimensions of width b = 3 mm, thickness d = 0.8 mm; 1 mm; 1.2 mm, length l = 30 mm for each type. The influence of the thickness of the retainers on their strength under loaded conditions was evaluated. Flexural strength, elastic properties, deflection, and creep were compared. The samples were aged in an artificial saliva bath at 37 ± 1 °C during the strength tests. Results: It was shown that differences in the thickness of the samples affected their elastic and strength properties. The highest average flexural modulus, the highest deflection, creep, and strength was characteristic of the samples with the highest thickness (1.2 mm). Samples with an average thickness of 1 mm had the lowest modulus of elasticity. Conclusions: The mechanical properties of 3D printed retainers show that they can be an alternative to metal retainers and the procedure of making new retainers, especially when patients have aesthetic requirements or allergies to metals.
The influence of finishing line and luting material selection on the seating accuracy of CAD/CAM indirect composite restorations

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to assess the seating accuracy of resin composite CAD/CAM overlay restorations, employing various preparation designs and luting materials (pre-heated composite (HC) or resin cement (RC)). Methods: A human molar's STL file was utilized to create 100 3D-printed resin tooth replicas, randomly distributed into 5 groups (n = 20) based on finishing line preparation designs: 1) Rounded shoulder above the dental equator - DE (SA); 2) Chamfer above the DE (CA); 3) Butt joint above the DE (BJ); 4) Rounded shoulder below the DE (SB); 5) Chamfer below the DE (CB). Digital impressions were acquired for all replicas, and restorations milled using Tetric CAD (Ivoclar Vivadent). The restorations were luted with HC (Tetric Prime, Ivoclar Vivadent) or RC (RelyX Universal, 3 M). Seating accuracy was evaluated through digital scans during try-in without any luting agent and post-cementation using a 3D analysis software (Geomagic wrap, 3D Systems). Data were statistically analyzed using Two-Way ANOVA (p < 0.05). Results: The type of luting material (RC vs HC), preparation design, and their interactions significantly impacted 3D seating of the restorations (p < 0.001). HC exhibited higer volumetric increase than RC. BJ and CA designs consistently demonstrated superior seating accuracy, irrespective of the luting material used. Conclusions: The utilization of pre-heated composite resin could negatively influence the seating of overlay restorations, probably due to its higher viscosity when compared to the resin cement. However, when HC is selected as luting agent, preparation designs lacking internal angles are recommended for enhancing the precision of overlays seating.
Influence of additive and subtractive zirconia and lithium disilicate manufacturing on tensile bond strength and surface topography

Abstract:Statement of problem: Although bonding is important for long-term clinical success, studies on the bonding of additively manufactured ceramics are sparse. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the influence of manufacturing methods, additive (LCM) versus subtractive (CAM). and ceramic materials, zirconia (ZrO2) and lithium disilicate (LiSi), on the tensile bond strength (TBS), failure mode, and surface roughness of ceramics. Material and methods: A total of 240 ceramic specimens (n=60/group; 2×2×10 mm) were prepared. Two additively manufactured (LCM-printed) ceramics, LiSi and ZrO2 (Lithoz), subtractively manufactured LiSi (IPS e.max CAD), and subtractively manufactured ZrO2 (KATANA Zirconia HTML PLUS) were evaluated. From each material, 40 specimens were bonded together (n=20 ceramic-ceramic specimens/group), and 20 specimens were bonded to equally sized human dentin specimens (n=20 ceramic-dentin specimens/group). The ZrO2 specimens were airborne-particle abraded (Al2O3, 50 µm, 0.1 MPa), and the LiSi specimens were etched with hydrofluoric acid. Then, a universal primer (Monobond Plus) was applied. After the dentin was coated with an etch-and-rinse adhesive (Syntac Classic), the specimens were bonded with luting composite resin (Variolink Esthetic DC), light polymerized for 40 seconds, thermally aged (10 000 cycles between 5 °C and 55 °C), tested for TBS, and statistically analyzed (1- and 3-way ANOVA and Weibull analysis). The ceramic surface was examined with scanning electron microscopy, and surface roughness was measured with digital microscopy before and after surface pretreatment. Results: TBS varied between 5.88 ±2.22 MPa and 6.34 ±2.26 MPa in the ceramic-dentin groups and 12.40 ±1.56 MPa and 18.82 ±5.92 MPa in the ceramic-ceramic groups. No significant difference was observed regarding the manufacturing method and material for different bonding conditions (P>.05). Additive and subtractive LiSi showed the highest reliability with m=18.27. The ceramic-ceramic specimens failed cohesively in the luting composite resin, whereas the ceramic-dentin specimens failed adhesively. Conclusions: The manufacturing method and material used had little effect on bond strength values or surface properties. The recently introduced printed materials performed similarly to conventionally milled materials.
The Micromechanical Properties and Surface Roughness of Orthodontic Retainer Wires-An In Vitro Analysis

Abstract:Background: Despite the large variety of retainer wires available, no studies could be found comparing the micromechanical properties and surface roughness of different retainer wires. Such characteristics affect the survival of the fixed retainer in terms of both fracture resistance and resistance to debonding from the tooth. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine and compare those characteristics in popular retainer wires. Methods: six different popular orthodontic retainer wires were subjected to instrumental indentation based on the Oliver and Pharr method. The geometric surface structure was analysed using a non-contact profilometer. Results: stainless steel wires had a higher hardness and a higher elastic modulus compared to titanium wires and white gold chain. The titanium wire and the white gold chain showed much more roughness than other wires. Conclusions: stainless steel wires are the most resistant, considering both the shape retention capacity and the ability to resist abrasive wear. The titanium wire showed the lowest hardness and, thus, the highest susceptibility to deformation. Bond-a-braid, Retainium and Orthoflex white gold are more resistant to fracture than other steel wires. Titanium wire and chain retainer wires have more roughness, which is a great advantage in terms of mechanical adhesion to composite materials.
Bonding Performance of Surface-Treated Zirconia Cantilevered Resin-Bonded Fixed Dental Prostheses: In Vitro Evaluation and Finite Element Analysis

Materials

Abstract:Debonding of zirconia cantilevered resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) remains the main treatment complication, therefore, the present in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of different surface pretreatments on the bonding of zirconia RBFDPs. Eighty milled zirconia maxillary central incisors, with complementary zirconia cantilevered RBFDPs, were randomly subjected to four different surface pretreatments (n = 20): as-machined (AM); airborne-particle abraded (APA); coated with nanostructured alumina coating (NAC); incisor air-abraded and RBFDP coated (NAC_APA). After bonding, half of each group (n = 10) was stored in deionized water (150 days/37 °C), thermocycled (37,500 cycles, 5–55 °C), and cyclically loaded (50 N/1.2 × 106). Load-bearing capacity (LBC) was determined using a quasi-static test. Additionally, finite element analysis (FEA) and fractography were performed. t-test and one-way ANOVA were used for statistical-analysis. Before aging, the NAC group provided superior LBC to other groups (p < 0.05). After aging, the AM specimens debonded spontaneously, while other groups exhibited comparable LBC (p ˃ 0.05). The FEA results correlated with the in vitro experiment and fractography, showing highly stressed areas in the bonding interface, cement layer, and in RBFDP's retainer wing and connector. The NAC RBFDPs exhibited comparable long-term bonding performance to APA and should be regarded as a zirconia pretreatment alternative to APA.

Abstract:Purpose To evaluate the impact of various preparation designs and the material type on fracture resistance of minimally invasive posterior indirect adhesive restorations after aging using a digital standardization method. Materials and Methods One‐hundred sixty human maxillary premolars free from caries were assigned into 16 groups (n = 10): bevel design on enamel substrate with mesial box only (VEM), butt joint design on enamel substrate with mesial box only (BEM), bevel design on enamel substrate with mesial and distal box (VED), butt joint design on enamel substrate with mesial and distal box (BED), bevel design on dentin substrate with mesial box only (VDM), butt joint design on dentin substrate with mesial box only (BDM), bevel design on dentin substrate with mesial and distal box (VDD), and butt joint design on dentin substrate with mesial and distal box (BDD).
