Abstract:We demonstrate the use of a metal surface to directly catalyse copper-catalysed alkyne-azide click-coupling (CuAAC) reactions under the conditions of Resonant Acoustic Mixing (RAM) – a recently introduced and scalable mechanochemical methodology that uniquely eliminates the need for bulk solvent, as well as milling media. By using a simple copper coil as a catalyst, this work shows that direct mechanocatalysis can occur in an impact-free environment, relying solely on high-speed mixing of reagents against a metal surface, without the need for specially designed milling containers and media. By introducing an experimental setup that enables real-time Raman spectroscopy monitoring of RAM processes, we demonstrate 0th-order reaction kinetics for several selected CuAAC reactions, supporting surface-based catalysis. The herein presented RAM-based direct mechanocatalysis methodology is simple, enables the effective one-pot, two-step synthesis of triazoles via a combination of benzyl azide formation and CuAAC reactions on a wide scope of reagents, provides control over reaction stoichiometry that is herein shown to be superior to that seen in solution or by using more conventional CuCl catalyst, and is applied for simple gram-scale synthesis of the anticonvulsant drug Rufinamide.

Comparison of mechanochemical methods in the synthesis of binaphthol-benzoquinone based cocrystals

Abstract:Mechanochemical methods either under neat or liquid assisted conditions have proven to be successful in making cocrystals. In this paper we compare the outcome of cocrystallization using two different mechanochemical methods, ball milling (BM) and resonant acoustic mixing (RAM), with solution crystallization. Racemic binaphthol and benzoquinone based binary and ternary cocrystals were investigated by BM and RAM. Both mechanochemical methods were successful in making the binary and ternary cocrystals that have been observed in solid state and solution. It is shown that the type of mechanochemical force imparted to the sample is very different between BM and RAM and this in turn leads to different cocrystallization outcomes. Thus, different mechanochemical methods should not be treated as the same and care must be taken when choosing a mechanochemical method for a particular application.

Abstract:Resonant Acoustic Mixing (RAM) is used to rapidly modify the surface of milled carbon fiber using diazonium salts in solvent free conditions. This novel method allows tuning of the surface properties of this material and reduces the environmental footprint usually associated with surface modification of carbon fiber (discontinuous or otherwise). As a proof of concept, fluorine-containing diazonium salts were successfully grafted as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and an increase in water contact angle (WCA) of the milled carbon fiber samples (+15°). Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) together with SEM revealed the surface structure and integrity of the milled carbon fibers could be maintained despite vigorous mixing conditions. Using RAM proved more efficient than positive controls produced under thermal conditions in solvent.

Abstract:At room temperature, a mixture of 1,1,3,3-tetraoxa-2,2-dibromo-4,4,5,5,6,6-hexafluoro-1,3-dithiacyclohexane 2) and excess pyrazine and hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA) in dichloromethane gave two unexpected products. The first product was the cocrystal (6), in which two bromide ions bridged two molecules of 2 via four C−Br···Br halogen bonds. The second product was the zwitterion which formed a 1:1 cocrystal with HMPA, (5), via a strong N−H···O hydrogen bond. Both products have been fully characterized by spectroscopic methods and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The reaction mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:Molecules bearing carboxylic acid, amide, and hydroxyl groups are ubiquitous in crystal engineering, where robust hydrogen-bonded synthons centred on these functionalities enable reliable crystal structure design. We now show that halogen bonding to the carbon π-system of such molecules, traditionally ignored in crystal engineering, permits the recognition and directional assembly of the resulting hydrogen-bonded structural subunits, leaving the archetypal hydrogen-bonded ring, ladder, and chain homosynthons intact, but repositioned in space. When applied to heteromolecular synthons, this enables rearranging more complex hydrogen-bonded motifs and the evolution of binary cocrystals into ternary ones through "latent" carbon-based recognition sites, demonstrating a rational approach to build higher-order solid-state supramolecular assemblies.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanical response characteristics and determining the optimized process conditions is critical to mitigate crystal impacts during resonant acoustic mixing (RAM). Therefore, high‐melting explosive (HMX) crystal collisions with container walls under different RAM accelerations were investigated through simulations and experiments. The HMX crystal damages after RAM were assessed using microscopic imaging, small‐angle X‐ray scattering, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller tests. Results show that crystal fractures observed in steel containers can be prevented by using low‐modulus polytetrafluoroethylene containers. Rough containers reduce internal damage but increase surface abrasion. Lower RAM accelerations, shorter RAM durations, and low‐modulus containers can mitigate HMX crystal damage.

Abstract:The structural identity of multi-component crystals as a salt or cocrystal is dictated by the proton transfer state between the molecular components. In pharmaceutical drugs, solid-state forms such as salt or cocrystal can have significantly distinct stability, dissolution and solubility profiles. The accurate location of proton positions is a formidable task using conventional X-ray crystallography as the atomic scattering factors are based on spherical electron density models. Herein, we demonstrate that the X-ray quantum crystallographic technique of Hirshfeld Atom Refinement (HAR) based on aspherical atomic scattering factors can be effectively employed to resolve this riddle. Our HAR models accurately located the proton positions, thus distinguishing salts, co-crystals, and continuum crystal structures, which are substantiated by the N-1s binding energies from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) corresponding to the base components in a series of crystals. The quantum crystallography models reveal the subtle features of electron localization and bonding around the double well potential in the intermolecular proton-transfer regions in these crystals.

Halogen Bonding versus Nucleophilic Substitution in the Co-Crystallization of Halomethanes and Amines

Abstract:Haloalkanes and amines are common halogen-bond (XB) donors and acceptors as well as typical reagents in nucleophilic substitution reactions. Thus, crystal engineering using these molecules requires an understanding of the interchange between these processes. Indeed, we previously reported that the interaction of quinuclidine (QN) with CHI3 in acetonitrile yielded co-crystals showing a XB network of these two constituents. In the current work, the interactions of QN with C2H5I or 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) with CH2I2 led to nucleophilic substitution producing I− anions and quaternary ammonium (QN-CH2CH3 or DABCO-CH2I+) cations. Moreover, the reaction of QN with CHI3 in dichloromethane afforded co-crystals containing XB networks of CHI3 with either Cl− or I− anions and QN-CH2Cl+ counter-ions. A similar reaction in acetone produced XB networks comprising CHI3, I− and QN-CH2COCH3+. These distinctions were rationalized through a computational analysis of XB complexes and the transition-state energies for the nucleophilic substitution. It indicated that the outcome of the reactions was determined mostly by the relative energies of the products. The co-crystals obtained in this work showed bonding between the cationic (DABCO-CH2I+, QN-CH2Cl+) or neutral (CHI3) XB donors and the anionic (I−, Cl−) or neutral (CHI3) acceptors. Their analysis showed comparable electron and energy densities at the XB bond critical points and similar XB energies regardless of the charges of the interacting species.

Listening to the formation of cocrystals and transformation of polymorphs in mechanochemistry through advanced operando acoustic analysis and real-time methods

Abstract:In this contribution, we apply our newly developed ball-milling operando platform, which combines Raman spectroscopy, thermal (IR) imaging, as well as acoustic and high-speed optical video recordings, to the synthesis and transformation of citric acid – isonicotinamide (1 : 2) cocrystal polymorphs. Particularly, we demonstrate how Raman, temperature, acoustic and video data are complementary and enable to detect and connect together chemical and physical events happening during the ball-milling in a time-resolved manner. Importantly, we show that the formation of the three polymorphs can be detected through the acoustic analyses solely. Even more impressively, the meticulous analyses of the sound data allowed the subtle polymorphic transitions to be perceived in operando mode when the Raman spectroscopy was not conclusive enough. Such changes in sound signatures are greatly linked to the beads’ motions in the milling jar. A new data analysis methodology of acoustic recordings is proposed through a combination of energetical and statistical approaches, which simplifies the data analyses for potential users. The interpretation of the detected sound signals was further validated thanks to the high-speed videos recorded in synchronization with all other operando techniques. Finally, we broaden this acoustic methodology to opaque stainless-steel jars, showing the relevance of the acoustic analysis method for any type of milling jars.

Abstract:Three different devices: ball mill, hot stage melting, and magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR rotor were used for the preparation of ethenzamide (ET) cocrystals with glutaric acid (GLU), ethylmalonic acid (EMA) and maleic acid (MAL) as coformers. In each case, well-defined binary systems (ET:EMA, ET:GLU, ET:MAL) were obtained. The common features of the two solvent free methods of cocrystal formation (grinding, melting) are presented on the basis of arguments obtained by solid state NMR spectroscopy. Thermal analysis (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) proved that the eutectic phase arises over a wide range of molar ratios of components for each of the binary systems. NMR techniques, supported by theoretical calculations, allowed to provide details about the pathway of the reaction mechanism with atomic accuracy. It was found that the formation of ET cocrystals is a complex process that requires five steps. Each step has been recognized and described. Variable temperature 1D and 2D MAS NMR experiments allowed to track physicochemical processes taking place in a molten state. Moreover, it was found that in a multicomponent mixture consisting of all four components, ET, EMA, GLU, and MAL, ET in the molten phase behaves as a specific selector choosing only one partner to form binary cocrystals according to energy preferences. The process of exchange of coformers in binary systems during grinding, melting, and NMR measurements is described. The stabilization energies (Estab ) and molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps computed for the cocrystals under discussion and their individual components rationalize the selection rules and explain the relationships between individual species.
Identification of an overlooked halogen bond synthon and its application in designing fluorescent materials.

Abstract:Research on new supramolecular synthons facilitates the progress of materials design. Herein, the ability of sp(2) carbonyl oxygen atoms to act as halogen-bond acceptors was established through cocrystallization. Four sets of carbonyl compounds, including aldehydes, ketones, esters, and amides, were selected as halogen-bond acceptors. In the absence of strong hydrogen bonds, 14 out of 16 combinations of halogen-bond donors and acceptors could form cocrystals, whereby the supramolecular synthon C=O center dot center dot center dot X acts as the main interaction. Further, the geometric parameters of the C= O center dot center dot center dot X interaction were statistically revealed on the basis of the crystallographic database. The bifurcated interaction mode that has been observed in other halogen-bond synthons rarely occurs in the case of C=O center dot center dot center dot X. The robustness of C=O center dot center dot center dot X makes its application in crystal engineering possible and opens up new opportunities in designing multicomponent fluorescent materials, as indicated by multicolor emission of cocrystals D through C=O center dot center dot center dot X interactions.
Raman and terahertz spectroscopical investigation of cocrystal formation process of piracetam and 3-hydroxybenzoic acid

Abstract:Cocrystallization can improve physical and chemical properties of active pharmaceutical ingredient, and this feature has great potential in pharmaceutical development. In this study, the cocrystal of piracetam and 3-hydroxybenzoic acid under grinding condition has been characterized by Raman and terahertz spectroscopical techniques. The major vibrational modes of individual starting components and cocrystal are obtained and assigned. Spectral results show that the vibrational modes of the cocrystal are different from those of the corresponding parent materials. The dynamic process of such pharmaceutical cocrystal formation has also been monitored directly with Raman and THz spectra. The formation rate is pretty fast in first several 20 min grinding time, and then it becomes slow. After ∼35 min, such process has been almost completed. These results offer us the unique means and benchmark for characterizing the cocrystal conformation from molecule-level and also provide us rich information about the reaction dynamic during cocrystal formation process in pharmaceutical fields.

Abstract:Phonon polaritons, the hybrid quasiparticles resulting from the coupling of photons and lattice vibrations, have gained significant attention in the field of layered van der Waals heterostructures. Particular interest has been paid to hetero‐bicrystals composed of molybdenum oxide (MoO3) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which feature polariton dispersion tailorable via avoided polariton mode crossings. In this work, we systematically study the polariton eigenmodes in MoO3‐hBN hetero‐bicrystals self‐assembled on ultrasmooth gold using synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy. We experimentally demonstrate that the spectral gap in bicrystal dispersion and corresponding regimes of negative refraction can be tuned by material layer thickness, and we quantitatively match these results with a simple analytic model. We also investigate polaritonic cavity modes and polariton propagation along "forbidden" directions in our microscale bicrystals, which arise from the finite in‐plane dimension of the synthesized MoO3 micro‐ribbons. Our findings shed light on the unique dispersion properties of polaritons in van der Waals heterostructures and pave the way for applications leveraging deeply sub‐wavelength mid‐infrared light matter interactions. Experimental Evidence for Non‐Fermi‐Contact J Coupling Across Chalcogen Bonds in Ionic Salt Cocrystal Polymorphs

Abstract:A pair of novel polymorphic ionic cocrystals of 3,4-dicyanotelluradiazole and tetraphenylphosphonium bromide are synthesized and are characterized by single-crystal XRD. Strong and directional non-covalent chalcogen bonds (ChB) between Te and Br are analyzed via solid-state NMR to reveal large and anisotropic J(125Te,79/81Br) coupling tensors, providing unequivocal evidence for non-Fermi contact contributions across ChBs. Along with large 79/81Br quadrupolar couplings for the Br- anions, these data provide new tools to characterize chalcogen bonds and to differentiate between ChB polymorphs.

Abstract:Using a nonplanar molecule as accepter and aryl iodidesas donors, three nonplanar cocrystals based on I···N halogen bonding are successfully fabricated. By changing the number and position of iodine in thecocrystals, the halogen bond, the π–π interactions between molecules are tuned, resulting the transformation of dimension and morphology of cocrystals. The application of organic crystal in different photoelectric device has different demand on the crystal structure and morphology, while the self‐assembly of different materials into crystals with a desired morphology remains a challenge. Herein, using three binary halogen‐bonded cocrystals involving a nonplanar halogen accepter molecule tetra(4‐pyridyl)‐tetrathiafulvalene (TTF(py)4), co‐crystallized with halogen donor aryl iodides C6F6‐xIx (x = 2,3, 1,3,5‐trifluoro‐2,4,6‐triiodobenzene (IFB), meta‐1,3‐diiodotetrafluorobenzene (mdIFB) or para‐1,3‐diiodotetrafluorobenzene (pdIFB)), are reported. TTF(py)4‐IFB cocrystals are formed primarily via N···I halogen bonds and F···H hydrogen bonds, while TTF(py)4‐mdIFB cocrystals and TTF(py)4‐pdIFB cocrystals are formed primarily via π–π Interactions, N···I halogen bonds and F···H hydrogen bonds, homogeneous π–π interactions are dominant in TTF(py)4‐mdIFB, while heterogeneous π–π interactions are dominant in TTF(py)4‐pdIFB. Through predicted morphology based on the attachment energy (Eatt) theory, especially π–π interaction, the influence of intermolecular interactions on crystal morphology is analyzed. The study demonstrates that the π–π interaction plays an important role in regulating the crystal structure and morphology, the work provides a deeper understanding of π–π interactions in nonplanar binary halogen‐bonded cocrystals.

Precise Structural and Dynamical Details in Zeolites Revealed by Coupling-Edited 1H-17O Double Resonance NMR Spectroscopy

Abstract:Despite the extensive industrial and research interests in zeolites, their intrinsic catalytic nature is not fully understood due to the complexity of the hydroxyl-aluminum moieties. O-17 NMR would provide irreplaceable opportunities for much-needed fine structural determination given the ubiquitous presence of oxygen atoms in nearly all species; however, the low sensitivity and quadrupolar nature of oxygen-17 make its NMR spectroscopic elucidation challenging. Here, we show that state-of-the-art double resonance solid-state NMR techniques have been combined with spectral editing methods based on scalar (through-bond) and dipolar (through-space) couplings, which allowed us to address the subtle protonic structures in zeolites. Notably, the often-neglected and undesired second-order quadrupolar-dipolar cross-term interaction ("2nd-QD interaction") can actually be exploited and can help gain invaluable information. Eventually, a comprehensive set of H-1-O-17/H-1-Al-27 double resonance NMR with J-/D-coupling spectral editing techniques have been designed in this work and enabled us to reveal atomic-scale precise structural and dynamical details in zeolites including: 1) The jump rate of the bridging acid site (BAS) proton is relatively low, i.e., far less than 100 s(-1) at room temperature. 2) The Al-OH groups with H-1 chemical shift at 2.6-2.8 ppm, at least for nonseverely dealuminated H-ZSM-5 catalysts, exhibit a rigid bridging environment similar to that of BAS. 3) The Si-OH groups at 2.0 ppm are not hydrogen bonded and undergo fast cone-rotational motion. The results in this study predict the 2nd-QD interaction to be universal for any rigid -O-17-H environment, such as those in metal oxide surfaces or biomaterials.

This paper highlights recent developments of energetic cocrystals and details intermolecular interactions, physical parameters and detonation properties. The major part of the discussion relates to the different types of energetic cocrystals including cocrystals composed of energetic molecules and solvents, 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20)-based cocrystals and azole-based cocrystals, et al. In addition, resonant acoustic mixing (RAM) technique, bead milling and spray flash evaporation technique are also introduced as means for large-scale production of nanosized energetic cocrystals.

Abstract:Hybrid quantum systems in which acoustic resonators couple to superconducting qubits are promising quantum information platforms. High quality factors and small mode volumes make acoustic modes ideal quantum memories, while the qubit-phonon coupling enables the initialization and manipulation of quantum states. We present a scheme for quantum computing with multimode quantum acoustic systems, and based on this scheme, propose a hardware-efficient implementation of a quantum random access memory (QRAM). Quantum information is stored in high-Q phonon modes, and couplings between modes are engineered by applying off-resonant drives to a transmon qubit. In comparison to existing proposals that involve directly exciting the qubit, this scheme can offer a substantial improvement in gate fidelity for long-lived acoustic modes. We show how these engineered phonon-phonon couplings can be used to access data in superposition according to the state of designated address modes-implementing a QRAM on a single chip.
