Abstract:Room temperature phosphorescence from organic materials has attracted an increasing attention in the recent years due to their potential application in various advancing technologies, notably in bioimaging and displays. In this context, heavy atoms such as halogen ones revealed useful tools to enhance the spin‐orbit coupling (SOC) of molecular organic phosphors. However, the effect of halogen at the supramolecular level remains less understood, especially in the field of molecular crystals where additional factors can impact the phosphorescence emission. Here, we investigate external effect of halogens on the phosphorescence of chiral phthalimides molecular crystals. The results show that changing the nature of the halogen atom onto the phthalimide core leads to an evolution of the photophysical properties of the materials which does not necessarily follow the classical trend imposed by the expected internal heavy atom effect. Beyond this aspect, we showed that the halogen atom has a profound impact on the packing between the chromophores at the supramolecular level which is of paramount importance towards the optical properties (PLQY and lifetimes) of the different phosphors examined.

Abstract:Organic halogen-bonded co-crystals assembled from two or more componentsviahalogen bonds, have attracted significant attention due to their unpredictable and outstanding chemical and physical properties, which make them potential candidate materials for organic optoelectronic applications. This paper briefly summarizes the recent progress in terms of the developed fabrication methods for organic halogen-bonded co-crystals and their multifunctional optoelectronic applications. Based on the current research on organic halogen-bonded co-crystals, we further discuss the achievements as well as the existing challenges. Finally, we provide our outlooks for further studies and applications of organic halogen-bonded co-crystals.
Through‐Space CBr···π Halogen Interaction: Efficient Modulation of Reaction‐Based Photochromism and Photoluminescence at Crystalline States for Irradiation Time‐Dependent Anti‐Counterfeiting

Abstract:Reaction‐based photo‐responsive molecular systems have been used as a reliable platform for building intelligent materials, but often suffer from high inactivity in terms of conversion efficiency and reversibility when it comes to solid‐state applications. Herein, a class of Spiro‐conjugated diphenylindene (DPI) aggregation‐induced emission materials that exhibit solid‐state photocyclization‐based photochromism and photoluminescence, achieved by manipulating through‐space CBr···π halogen interactions is reported. In the crystalline state, the Spiro bridge enables a pair of perpendicularly configured CBr···π interactions that suppress photoluminescence while activating a highly reversible (>10 000 cycles) and efficient photochromism based on photocyclization. After breaking this intermolecular CBr···π interaction, for example, by grinding, the solid‐state photochromic properties are sensitively de‐activated. In addition, this spontaneously reversible photochromism behavior gives a controllable decolorization time (from a few seconds to a few minutes), depending on the light exposure conditions, while displaying a luminescence change. In a proof‐of‐principle study, these photo‐function features demonstrate an attractive potential for novel anti‐counterfeiting applications. This work reveals the efficient regulation of CBr···π halogen interactions for spatial molecular packing, molecular electronic transitions, and chemical transformations, paving the way for the development of solid‐state intelligent materials with good reversibility.

Abstract:Five series of cyanostilbene-based rod-like liquid crystals containing one different terminal atom (H, F, Cl, Br and I) at one end and one terminal aliphatic chain with different numbers of carbon atoms at the other end were reported by Suzuki coupling and Knoevenagel reactions. The influence of terminal halogen atoms and terminal chain length on the self-assembly, AIE behavior, temperature-dependent emission and mechanochromism behavior was explored by POM, DSC, XRD, SEM, absorption spectra and emission spectra. All the compounds are enantiotropic liquid crystals. The lowest non-halogen substituted homologue exhibited solo N phase, but the higher non-halogen substituted homologues exhibited mesogenic transition from SmA phase to N phase upon rising temperature. All the lowest halogen substituted homologues exhibited mesogenic transition from SmA phase to N phase upon rising temperature and all the higher homologues only exhibited SmA. The distinct mesogenic phase transition could be attributed to the intermolecular interaction produced by terminal halogen and the rigidity of the terminal aliphatic chain. All the non-halogen substituted compounds and halogen substituted compounds with smaller terminal halogen atom (F, Cl and Br atom) exhibited AIE behaviors, whereas the iodinated compounds exhibited extremely weak emission in solution and aggregated states due to the heavy atoms effect. These compounds also exhibited distinct solid-state emission with blue or cyan fluorescence, which could be quenched by increasing temperature. The reversible mechanochromism behavior was also achieved in all the compounds. The mechanical force induced quench in emission in non-halogen substituted compounds and halogen substituted compounds with smaller terminal halogen atom (F, Cl and Br atom), whereas enhancement in iodinated compounds. The reversible mechanochromism behavior endowed these compounds with potential applications in rewritable paper and anti-counterfeiting. The interesting properties in these liquid crystals would be attributed to the balance of the halogen-halogen interactions, heavy atom effect, steric-hindrance effect and chain length. These investigations would be helpful to understand the relationship between chemical structures and properties.

Abstract:Photomechanical molecular crystals, actuated by solid-state photochemical reactions, manifest a spectrum of mechanical motions upon light exposure, underscoring their prospective integration into the next generation of intelligent materials and devices. Utilizing the solid-state photodimerization of naphthyl acrylic acid as a paradigm, this study delved into the interplay between crystal morphology and reaction dynamics on the photomechanical responses of molecular crystals. Distinct crystal forms—bulk, microrods, and microplates—were cultivated through tailored crystallization conditions. While bulk crystals of naphthyl acrylic acid (NA) underwent shattering and splintering upon UV light exposure, the microplate counterparts displayed unique cracking patterns with fissures yet retained their overall structural integrity. In contrast, NA microrods underwent pronounced bending under identical irradiation conditions. These phenomena are attributed to the efficient lattice reconfiguration stemming from the [2 + 2] cycloaddition photochemical reaction within the crystals. An intermediate fluorescence enhancement was observed across all crystal types upon light exposure. Collectively, our results underscore the pivotal role of crystal shape in dictating photomechanical behavior, thereby heralding novel strategies for developing advanced photomechanical materials.

Abstract:Molecular architectures containing photosensitive units respond to light, giving dramatic variations of their structure. In particular, the crystalline packing phases offer the possibility of significant advances in crystal design and the understanding of solid-state photoreactivity. In this review we mainly focus on three different photoreactivity patterns, namely the isomerization of azobenzene, open-ring <-> closed-ring transformations of diarylethenes and cycloadditions of olefin pairs, as well as some examples of photoreactive crystals outside these types. Many interesting phototriggered functionalities are documented herein, such as photo-tuning of guest adsorption of azobenzene or diarylethene-based porous frameworks and crystalline organic polymers generated by photo-cycloaddition reactions taking place in the different networks. Abstract:To understand the deformation mechanism of molecular crystals under mechanical forces will accelerate the molecular design and preparation of deformable crystals. Herein, the relationship between structural halogenation and molecular-level stacking, micro/nanoscale surface morphology, and macroscopic mechanical properties are investigated. Elastic crystals of halo-pyrimidinyl carbazoles (CzM-Cl, CzM-Br and CzM-I) with lamellar structure and brittle crystal (CzM-F) were quantitatively analyzed by crystal energy framework (CEF) providing the inter/intralayer interaction energy (Inter/Intra-IE). It is revealed that the elastic crystals bend under external force as a result from stronger Intra-IE to prevent cleavage and weaker Inter-IE for the short-range movement of molecules on the slip plane. This research will provide an insight for the molecular design of flexible crystals and facilitate the development of next-generation smart crystal materials.

Abstract:In this review, we highlight the role of halogenated compounds in the colloidal synthesis of nanostructured semiconductors. Halogen-containing metallic salts used as precursors and halogenated hydrocarbons used as ligands allow stabilizing different shapes and crystal phases, and enable the formation of colloidal systems with different dimensionality. We summarize recent reports on the tremendous influence of these compounds on the physical properties of nanocrystals, like field-effect mobility and solar cell performance and outline main analytical methods for the nanocrystal surface control.

Abstract:Self-trapping excitons (STEs) emission in metal halides has been a matter of interest, correlating with the strength of electron-phonon coupling in the lattice, which are usually caused by ions with ns2 electronic structure. In this work, Sb3+/Te4+ ions doped Zn-based halide single crystals (SCs) with two STEs emissions have been synthesized and the possibility of its anti-counterfeiting application was explored. Further, the relationship between the strength of electron-phonon coupling and photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) for STEs in a series of metal halides has been studied. And the semi-empirical range of the Huang-Rhys factors (S) for metal halides with excellent photoluminescence (PL) property has been summarized. This work provides ideas for further research into the relationship between luminescence performance and electron-phonon coupling of metal halides, and also provides a reference for designing the metal halides with high PLQYs.
Molecular Twisting Affects the Solid-State Photochemical Reactions of Unsaturated Ketones and the Photomechanical Effects of Molecular Crystals

Abstract:Three groups of chalcone derivatives and their analogues involving halogen atoms (X=F, Cl, Br) have been synthesized. Firstly, the nearly planar acyclic chalcone derivatives were inclined to undergo photo-induced stereospecific [2+2] cycloaddition, which triggered the crystals to exhibit macroscopic motions of bending or cracking. In particular, the single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation happened upon UV irradiation of the crystals, which was helpful for the understanding photomechanical effects. Cyclic 3,4-dihydronaphthalene-based chalcone analogues possess a more twisted conformation, and they tend to undergo trans-cis isomerization. No photomechanical effect was observed for the crystals of the cyclic chalcone analogues due to the lower isomerization rate. The twist degree of chroman-based molecules was in between of the first two, [2+2] cycloaddition and trans-cis isomerization simultaneously took place in crystals. Photo-induced bending and twisting were observed for the crystals of chroman-based chalcone analogues. Therefore, the differences in molecular dihedral angles in alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones were responsible for their photochemical characters and in turn to tune the photomechanical effects. In this work, a bridge between the molecular structures and solid-state photochemical reactions triggered photomechanical crystals is built.
The Photosalient Effect and Thermochromic Luminescence Based on o‐Carborane‐Assisted π‐Stacking in the Crystalline State

Abstract:Herein, we report unique multiple-stimuli responsiveness of anthracene-tethered o-carborane derivatives. We designed and synthesized anthracene derivatives with different substitution positions and numbers of the o-carborane units. Two compounds had the characteristic crystal structure involving the columnar π-stacking structures of the anthracene units. From the analysis of crystalline-state structure-property relationships, it was revealed that the crystals exhibit the photosalient effect accompanied with photochemical [4+4] cycloaddition reactions and temperature-dependent photophysical dual-emission properties including excimer emission of anthracene. Those properties were considered as non-radiative and radiative deactivation pathways through the excimer formation in the excited state and formation of those species was facilitated by the π-stacking structure of anthracene units. Moreover, we found unusual temperature dependency of the occurrence of the photosalient effect. According to the data from variable temperature X-ray crystallography, the strong correlation between lattice shrinkage and strain accumulation is suggested.

Abstract:Three novel alkyl phenothiazinyl phenylacrylonitrile derivatives (C12F, C12Cl, and C12Br) with different halogen end groups (fluorine, chlorine, and bromine) were synthesized with ultra-high yield (>90%) and successfully confirmed according to standard spectroscopic methods. All these compounds were demonstrated with apparent twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) features. The halogen effect rendered them different electronic donor-acceptor behaviours, and gave birth to peculiar different mechanofluorochromic properties. The fluorine-substituted compound (C12F) showed obvious red-shifted mechanofluorochromic feature, while almost no mechanofluorochromic characteristic existed in the chlorine- (C12Cl) and bromine-substituted (C12Br) compounds. The mechanofluorochromic mechanism of C12F was investigated and attributed to the phase transformation from crystalline to amorphous state between the original and ground samples, easy crystallinity of the compound, straight conformation of alkyl chain, higher energy gap, and significant decrease of weighted mean lifetime. Moreover, C12F showed reversible mechanofluorochromic behaviour and reproducibility by annealing the ground sample, making it promising dual responsive and smart fluorescent materials for fluorescence switches and mechanosensors. The discussion of halogen effect on mechanofluorochromic properties in this work would provide a new way to adjust the fluorescent feature of mechanofluorochromic materials.

Abstract:The halogen-substituted derivatives and the hexabenzoperylenes in organic semiconductors are theoretically studied using density functional theory. The effects of halogen-substitution on intramolecular energy-level transition and intermolecular stacking patterns are discussed by studying the charge transfer and spectral characteristics. The results show that halogen atom can effectively lower the frontier molecule orbitals energy and enhance the molecular stability. Not only the plane characteristics of the molecular structure been controlled, but also the semiconductors can be converted from p-type to n-type by changing the number and position of halogen-substituted atoms. The studies reveal that the molecular torsion angle can been used to effectively predict the transport level of molecules, and the halogen-substitution play an important part in the photochemical properties of molecules.

Abstract:Structurally ordered soft materials that respond to complementary stimuli are susceptible to control over their spatial and temporal morphostructural configurations via intersectional or combined effects such as gating, feedback, shape-memory, or programming. In absence of general and robust design and prediction strategies for their mechanical properties, at present, combined chemical and crystal engineering approaches could provide useful guidelines to identify effectors that determine both the magnitude and time of their response. Here, we capitalize on the purported ability of soft intermolecular interactions to instigate mechanical compliance by using halogenation to elicit both mechanical and photochemical activity of organic crystals. Starting from (E)-1,4-diphenylbut-2-ene-1,4-dione, whose crystals are brittle and photoinert, we use double and quadruple halogenation to introduce halogen-bonded planes that become interfaces for molecular gliding, rendering the material mechanically and photochemically plastic. Fluorination diversifies the mechanical effects further, and crystals of the tetrafluoro derivative are also elastic but also motile, displaying the rare photosalient effect.

Abstract:Abstract Photoluminescence (PL) colour-changing materials in response to photostimulus play an increasingly significant role in intelligent applications for their programmability. Nevertheless, current research mainly focuses on photochemical processes, with less attention to PL transformation through uniform aggregation mode adjustment. Here we show photochromic luminescence in organic crystals (e.g. dimethyl terephthalate) with PL varying from dark blue to purple, then to bright orange-red, and finally to red. This change is attributed to the emergence of clusters with red emission, which is barely achieved in single-benzene-based structures, thanks to the subtle molecular rearrangements prompted by light. Crucial to this process are the through-space electron interactions among molecules and moderate short contacts between ester groups. The irradiated crystals exhibit reversible PL transformation upon sufficient relaxation, showing promising applications in information storage and smart optoelectronic devices. This research contributes to the development of smart photochromic luminescent materials with significant PL colour transformations through molecular rearrangement.
