Abstract:The substrate-to-overlay bond development in cementitious bi-layer hybrid material is crucial in determining the integrity of concrete repairs, and Mode II fracture-type loads are more prevalent at the substrate-to-overlay interface bonds. This study focuses on a numerical parametric evaluation to determine the factors affecting the Mode II cohesive fracture behavior and failure modes of shotcrete-concrete interface bonds. The study utilizes a cohesive zone model for simulating the interface bond and a concrete damage plasticity model for analyzing the constitutive behavior of the concrete substrate and the shotcrete overlay. The numerical cohesive fracture model established correlates well with the Mode II fracture experimental tests of shotcrete-concrete interface bonds using a double-wedge butterfly fracture specimen. The results indicate that both the interface cohesive strength and the critical interface bond fracture energy govern the failure modes of the hybrid cementitious composite system. These parameters could be improved using mechanical methods such as substrate surface preparation before applying the overlay. It also emphasizes the importance of evaluating the substrate-to-overlay interface bonds based on the fracture-based tests simultaneously with the strength-based tests.
