Abstract:This article examines the life of Friedrich Froebel, the founder of the kindergarten in the 1840s. It describes how the kindergarten and its impact in Germany and the United States. It spread at the international level of education because German kindergarten teachers relocated it to other countries when it was banned in Germany. In the years from 1851 to 1914, kindergarten had much greater success in the United States than in Germany. In 1900, most German school authorities refused to incorporate the kindergarten into public school systems, but many American school systems included kindergarten classes after it was accepted. This paper provides a summary of Froebel's life and his gifts to children in Germany and the United States.

Abstract:This contribution looks at the garden that Friedrich Froebel (1782–1852) founded in Bad Blankenburg in 1838 in order to understand the proposal presented at the Kindergarten Model School of Madrid for training teachers in 1879 (the Schools introduced new teaching methods or systems and, at the same time, trained the teachers in their application). Based on a description of the garden we analyse, from a botanical standpoint, the educational intentions of the original garden for children in the Kindergarten of Blankenburg and the modifications made to fit it to a Spanish context. Among other things, we study the introduction of productive work into the education curriculum of the youngest pupils, together with the floristic configuration and composition of the garden. The initial Froebel model in Spain underwent several modifications and adaptations, and, in the case of the garden itself, these modifications were reflected in the form, composition, and therefore didactic intention of the proposal. Its reception in Spain shows similarities and differences with respect to the original concept, which must be analysed in the context in which they were produced. Moreover, the differences in interpreting the method underscore its application in Spain and subsequent reinterpretations over the years.

Abstract:This study is a pilot study conducted on rural schools of Kashmir in a specific area in order to evaluate the understanding of Froebel’s theory by primary school teachers of rural Kashmir. The study is based on answering of preset questionnaire which was given to various primary school teachers in order to investigate their understanding of Froebel’s theory and its implications in practice. Analysis of data shows professional priorities of teachers, their respect of student’s ideas and their concern of student’s safety.Even though many teachers have an idea about Froebel’s theory, but majority did not know their practice is based on this theory. This study argues about the need for training of primary school teachers in rural areas with a focus on Froebel’s doctrine in order to generate trained teacher population who are well aware about the origin of their practice and can provide a rich learning experience.

Abstract:The present paper discusses the contributions of Friedrich Froebel educational thinking and specifically for the early childhood education regarding design, creation of the gardens of childhood (Kindergarten) and the didactics for the early childhood. As an introduction to pedagogical thinking of Froebel, this exploratory nature article, understandably, as characteristic of qualitative approach, the principles of self-expression, toy, physical culture, creative production, drama, drawing, among others for early childhood education. Although idealistic, Froebel's contribution, not only in the educational context, but in the field of child psychology emphasizes the need and recurrence of the recognition of the specificity of early childhood education and development, language and stages of maturity of the child.

Abstract:This paper aims to trace the influences of Hegel’s philosophical thoughts and ideas on the architecture design studios’ activities. Hegel is a key figure in the modern history of philosophy that lived in the time of establishing Beaux Art on the skeleton of Academie d’Architecture. Despite the many developments in different areas of education, seemingly, there are still some common grounds between Hegelian philosophy and architecture design studio activities that need to be highlighted and criticized. Content analysis and storytelling based on the structured observation applied in this research to compare two foundations. The results reveal four connections between Hegelian philosophy and architecture design studio activities, including precedents studies and historical dialectic, learning by doing and self-consciousness, crits (critiques) and idealism, and master-apprentice and master-slave theories, respectively. The findings highlight that activities in architecture design studios regenerate through studios, which run based on traditions, disciplines, and styles under the influences of Hegel’s philosophy. In conclusion, while Hegelian thoughts spread through successor philosophers in phenomenology, hermeneutics, existentialism, Marxism, and structuralism, education in architecture design studios has continued without the regeneration of ideas.

Abstract:An official state evaluation of the Pestalozzi method in Yverdon in 1810 judged that the method practiced at the institute was appropriate for a family-type educational institution but would not serve as a model for mass schooling in a modern state. This sobering report caused the tensions to escalate, and years of ups and downs were ahead of Pestalozzi. After Napoleon’s end and the Congress of Vienna (1814-1815) Switzerland was in danger of being divided between France (in Restoration) and conservative Austria. This triggered Pestalozzi’s writing of his political testament. The devastating economic crises of 1816–1817 reminded him of his original vocation, education for the poor, which reinforced the problems in Yverdon.

Abstract:This chapter explores distinctive aspects of history studies when conducted as a university class travelling abroad. Whereas effective teaching of children and adolescents studying ‘at home’ is usually associated with a ‘zone of proximal development’, this chapter suggests that when your history classroom re-locates to a foreign land history teaching encounters worlds of wander and wonder: a zone of improximal development. Rather than try to assess student learning outcomes via sampling that will always be too small, this essay offers an experienced teacher’s (contestable!) reflections on historical and educational foundations of these differences. These foundations prompt four practicalities for academics planning study tours: (1) Centre every aspect of the tour around an explicit and universal focus question, reiterating it in a closing assessment open to a variety of interpretations. (2) Enable daily time and space, while travelling, for academic de-briefs with students. (3) Frame focus-question-related study topics for students to prepare, before travelling, each linked to a site visited. A student—not just the academic and the local guide—then becomes an instructor, of sorts, on tour, at least once, probably twice. (4) Find ways to discuss the anthropology of ‘othering’ at induction classes before you tour, tasking students to ponder the ‘us’ and ‘me’ in encounters with ‘them’.

Abstract:O presente trabalho buscou investigar a pedagogia escolar de Froebel como campo de pesquisa e sua aplicação na educação. Este estudo foi norteado pela busca de resposta ao seguinte questionamento: quais são as principais ideias de Froebel para a educação de crianças? De forma específica, buscou-se ainda: (1) Examinar a relação entre a infância e adolescência de Froebel e a sua obra; (2) conhecer os princípios filosóficos que suportam a pedagogia de Frobel; (3) identificar os principais pontos do pensamento educacional de Froebel; (4) confrontar os dados resultantes da pesquisa. O estudo foi teórico-bibliográfico, de natureza qualitativa. A pesquisa demonstrou que a auto atividade livre e espontânea da criança, desenvolvida através de jogos e brincadeiras, é a principal ideia do pensamento educacional de Froebel.

Abstract:Abstract In the mid to late nineteenth century, many missionary women from Western countries arrived in Japan to engage in educational work. They made a significant impact not only on the establishment of Christian kindergartens and kindergarten teacher training schools but also on the dissemination of Friedrich Froebel's theory of kindergarten education across Japan. This paper considers the role of religion in the missionary women's implementation of Froebel's theory to understand how Christian faith and values have influenced pedagogy and practice at their training schools, with a particular focus on the case of prominent American missionary and Froebelian Annie L. Howe (1852-1943) and her Glory Kindergarten teacher training school in Japan. By highlighting the curriculum and day-to-day training experiences at Howe's Froebelian kindergarten teacher training school, this study contributes to the body of knowledge about how teaching, learning, curriculum, and pedagogic discourse were transformed not just by the decisions of the Froebelians but also by Howe's Christian faith and values.

Abstract:Much existing scholarship takes Marc-Antoine Jullien’s 1816/17 Esquisse et Vues Préliminaries d’un ouvrage sur L’Éducation Comparée [Sketch and Preliminary Views for a work on Comparative Education] as an epochal moment in the establishment of comparative education as a scientific field of academic study. Yet, Jullien’s plan also needs to be examined in relation to European traditions of travel and global colonial expansion – and, concurrently, to the cosmopolitan practices, networks and mobilities that constitute social science. This article argues that principles of colonial difference saturate Jullien’s proposal. The ways that Jullien’s work enables and disables subjectivities and subject positions as well as the ways it reifies social and contextual categories of analysis have cautionary salience for us today. Jullien’s proposal did not found a discipline nor did it spark a continuous conversation, yet it is an instance in the establishment of the field that shows the stubbornly durable entanglement of educational comparison with colonialism.

Abstract:Travel and travel writing imply freedom of mobility and agency. That a fugitive slave like William Wells Brown could become a tourist is significant because it destabilizes our understanding of tourism. In The American Fugitive in Europe: Sketches of Places and People Abroad (New York: Jewett, Proctor & Worthington, 1855), Brown grounds his critique of his tour in the experiences of his early life as a slave and in his insistence on ethical responsibility. He interrogates the inequities of American society by revisiting European history from the perspective of the oppressed. Brown moves beyond touristic hedonism to anchor the tourist subject onto the larger canvas of historical and socio-political reality. This paper explores Brown's shifting identity through Urry (The Tourist Gaze: Leisure and Travel in Contemporary Societies, London, Sage, 1990) and MacCannell's (‘Tourist Agency’, Tourism Studies, vol. 1, pp. 23–38, 2001) reading of the tourist gaze.

Abstract:The publication of Noah & Eckstein's Toward a Science of Comparative Education (1969, Macmillan, NY) marked the beginning of an increasingly narrow research trajectory in comparative education, claiming a universality for Western knowledge and privileging scientific rationality in research. Juxtaposing the 'science' to Lewis Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland', such comparative education relegated more-than-human worlds and spiritual domains of learning – and being – to our collective pasts, personal childhood memories, or imaginations. How can we reorient and attune ourselves toward a Wonder(land), rather than a Science of comparative education exclusively, opening spaces for multiple ways of making sense of the world, and multiple ways of being? How can we reanimate our capacity toengage with a more-than-human world? Based on the analysis of children's literature and textbooks published during various historical periods in Latvia, this article follows the white rabbit to reexamine taken-for-granted dichotomies – nature and culture, time and space, self and other – by bringing the 'pagan' worldviews or nature-centred spiritualities more clearly into focus, while reimagining education and childhood beyond the Western horizon.

Abstract:In 2018, the state Kindergarten sector in Malta (3-5 years) was influenced by the shift from a prescriptive to an emergent curriculum, and the increasing use of eTwinning - a particular scenario that is research-worthy. Through one narrative inquiry of a Kindergarten educator who decided to ‘marry’ the emergent curriculum and eTwinning in practice, this paper aims to systematically track down the educator’s experience of this integration. Findings indicate initial and ongoing challenges overshadowed by sustained success through the synergy created from the philosophically fused emergent curriculum and the eTwinning concept. This study conceptualises the birth of an innovative approach and surfaces a rediscovery of Froebel’s 19th-century Kindergarten.

Abstract:Fredrich Froebel was a scientist, both in instinct and in training, and his life coincided with an important and dynamic period of scientific growth. I take this opportunity to delve both into some history and futurology to examine the heritage and legacy of his work. The usual of interpolation is of reading into data: where there exist some consistent trends within a broad set of data then the reader can reasonably infer the value of intervening points, to 'read between the dots.' Here, I explore known features of Froebel's scientific life and then read – interpret – between the lines. Extrapolations, in turn, are inferences made beyond the data, surmises drawn from datum points already established. This is 'informed speculation'. In the latter part of the paper, I run with some of Froebel's seminal ideas into the near future, peering forward for issues in science education that might plausibly have Froebelian antecedents.

Abstract:"More than any other university I have visited, Sussex gives a feeling of intellectual excitement and enthusiasm," said Richard West in "The" [London] "Sunday Times. The Idea of a New University" is an account, by the men who thought of it and put it into practice, of the founding of a new kind of university.The planners of the University of Sussex have jettisoned traditional undergraduate education, with its rigidly separated subjects, for a new concept which has attracted large numbers of students, some of whom have turned down scholarships at Oxford or Cambridge in its favor. The degree courses at Sussex have a central "core" subject and related "context" papers, which will bring the specialist in French literature, for instance, into contact with the disciplines of social science, philosophy, or history. The papers themselves include such stimulating topics as "Contemporary Britain" or "The Modern European Mind." Departments have been done away with; there are instead Schools, of Social Studies, of African and Asian Studies, of Physical Sciences and so on.
