Abstract:This article explores the question of cross-cultural understanding by reading One Chinese Moon (1960), a book that records Canadian geophysicist Jock Tuzo Wilson's travel to Great Leap Forward China in 1958. As a transcultural traveller, Wilson is able to see the distance between common assumptions about the visited country and the reality he witnesses during his travel. His awareness of such distance does not overcome his limitations as an observer, but nonetheless results in his providing the reader with nuanced, comparative observations of the travelled culture and his home culture. With privileged hindsight, we see that on most occasions the traveller cannot transcend the limit of history and his realm of knowledge when representing the visited place, which always puts his cultural translation in question. Nevertheless, his travel showcases a conscious effort to reach an understanding of China based upon his recognition of the common ground underneath striking national, cultural, and political disparities. His is an understanding that comprehends cultural difference not as an obstacle to knowing a foreign culture, but as a puzzle that elicits interest in that culture and causes an urge to learn the culture better. The process of cultural translation not only brings about an insightful vision of the traveller's original culture but also results in a global consciousness or a cosmopolitan conviction that casts into doubt the constructed boundaries between nations and cultures. Rather than pursuing an authentic version of a real China at the time of Wilson's travel – if such a version exists at all – this article questions the binarism represented in the existing discourse of and about travel writing by reading a neglected travel account.

Abstract:Culture is the cumulative deposit of knowledge, traditions, beliefs acquired by a human community in the course of generations: ethics is one of the most important of such beliefs. As for the intercultural communication, the discipline which studies a cultural dialogue about various issues across different communities, since the eighties of the last century it has been the object of various theories, based on experimental data collections: among them the ‘Values Orientation Theory’ by F.R. Kluckhohn and F. Strodtbeck, the ‘Cultural Dimensions Theory’ by G. Hofstede and the ‘Theory of Basic Values’ by S.H. Schwartz. One of the goals of this paper is to give a closer look at those theories. In the same period of time an ‘ethical turn’ manifested itself in western literary studies, after a long period of post-modernist disengagement, by initiative of J. Gardner, M. C. Nussbaum and J. Habermas, among others: the same happened in China in the eve of the new millennium, owing to the studies on comparative literature by Nie Zhenzhao. Literary works constitute an important vehicle of ethical intercultural communication. A second goal of the present paper is that of suggesting a ‘constructivist approach’ in the cultural dialogue between the western world and China, combining the results of those theoretical models with a comparative analysis of literary works chosen ad hoc, as recently done by Xu Zhilin in her comparative study of female images in ‘A leaf in the storm’, by Lin Yutang, and ‘Gone with the wind’, by Margareth Mitchell, from the perspective of Hofstede’s Cultural Dimension Theory.

Abstract:Using Chinese language teaching in an engineering department as an example, this paper explores how language teaching can meet the challenges of globalisation and the advancement of technology by fulfilling its educational function as described in Byram's model of intercultural communicative competence. By adapting theories and practices from counselling psychology, the proposed curriculum focuses on emotions to help learners uncover emotional barriers that arise when confronted with differences. It will support learners in raising awareness and developing their capacity to negotiate differences, leading to more effective cooperation with others. The paper discusses the use of experiential exercises in the classroom. They include those developed in Chinese language pedagogy, namely the performed culture approach and those developed in humanistic psychotherapy, such as body psychotherapy. The aim is to help learners notice their own feelings, attitudes, and behaviour as well as the otherness of the other in the classroom. This approach is powerful because it is in the here and now. It utilises movements and different senses as well as cognition. It helps uncover barriers to intercultural communication hidden under the surface by making the unconscious conscious. Reflection is a key part of this process. Learners are expected to reflect on their own thinking and feelings and to make sense of the dynamics in the classroom. Learners are expected to develop reflexivity, subjectivity and intersubjective awareness while acquiring linguistic competency and social cultural rules of use.

Abstract:Chinese migrants have been a rich source of influential international literature, represented by key works such as Eat a Bowl of Tea by Louis Chu in 1961 and The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan in 1989. Cultural differences and conflicts, stereotypes and other complex issues regarding the diasporic lives of the Chinese sojourners are revealed vividly in those stories. In the intercultural language teaching of Chinese in USA, Australia and Europe, a central and pressing task is to improve students' intercultural sensitivities and develop the capability to communicate efficiently with China and Chinese people. In light of critical literary studies that treat literature as a kind of ‘cultural artefact’ and recent analysis of Hay and Wang which advocates ‘migratory’ literature as a ‘third place’ for intercultural communication, this paper takes a step further. It does so by expanding the spectrum into Chinese norms, stereotypes and some core values that are significant in intercultural communication with Chinese and explores interdisciplinary approaches to linking studies of Chinese migrant literature and the intercultural education of Chinese at university level.

Abstract:In this qualitative study, the researchers examined the experience of a sample of language instructors in foreign language programs to identify the challenges they encountered and the strategies they applied in integrating culture into their daily teaching. The findings of this study indicated that in spite of confronting challenges in cultural teaching, language instructors have made individual efforts on culture teaching in their specific programs. The article concluded with possible implications for language teachers and suggestions for future studies.

Abstract:With the increasing comprehensive national strength of China and the need for national development, the communication between China and Western English-speaking countries has been thriving. Under this trend, the field of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages has been developing rapidly, with a large number of foreign friends showing great enthusiasm for learning Chinese. The main arguments of this paper are: 1. challenges encountered in teaching Chinese as a second foreign language; 2. Reasons for Chinese intercultural communication errors; 3. strategies of teaching Chinese as a second language in intercultural communication. Therefore, to better promote communication between China and the West, spread Chinese culture, and help foreigners to understand and overcome the difficulties of learning Chinese, this essay demonstrates that Chinese language teachers should focus on cultivating the intercultural communication abilities of communicators. Through learning the basic linguistic knowledge and cultural background of both communicators, it is possible to minimize barriers in intercultural communication, and more amicable international exchanges can be facilitated.

Abstract:According to Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory, the Sino-American cultural conflict depicted in American writer Peter Hessler's documentary book River Town focuses on four aspects: Individualism versus Collectivism, Power Distance, Long-term versus Short-term, Indulgence versus Restraint. Hessler experienced inevitable cultural conflicts in physical and mental aspects. Finally good things wear out. He fitted into Chinese life and fell in love with this Chinese town. Through the textual analysis of the cases in the book, the cultural conflicts between China and the United States and the intercultural communication skills used by the cross-boundary communicators can be clarified. Under the background of reform and opening up, Chinese society has undergone great changes, the stereotype of traditional China has been broken in River Town. Thus, it is very important to use intercultural communication skills in different places according to local conditions and times.

Abstract:Reviewed by John Lowe, Charlene Tan and Ting-Hong WongIf one is interested in studying 'social change' – almost however one interprets that broad phrase – then China is a magnet to researchers. What makes it so is not only the extent of the social change that is on offer to the interested observer, but also, and perhaps more significantly, the speed at which change has taken and is taking place here. Living in China and engaging with 'life as it is lived' on a daily – if often vicarious – basis, it is easy to feel that 'ways of life' are changing at a rate that is almost sensible. Add to this observation of rapid change the claim widely made by various Chinese authorities – and commonly repeated to me in student essays – that China is 'unique' in its 5000-year cultural continuity; then similarly note the frequent, insistent references one meets to the need to recognise the influences of a philosopher-teacher from 2500 years ago if one is to 'understand' contemporary China. With this mix of cultural change and continuity the study of change in Chinese society becomes not just interesting but enigmatic. The relationships and tensions that are present in all societies, between cultural change and cultural continuity, between what we make of our present daily lives and what we take in from the past in that making process beg to be taken as being particularly significant in China (and woe betide any naïve Western researcher who does not accept this). Or do they? Should we also be questioning how much of what constitutes China and what is happening there is as 'unique' as Chinese authorities' sources claim – and my students and acquaintances like to echo. Can we approach a study of China by asking whether the uniqueness of China is any more than that of any country or culture? Should we take a 'particularist' or 'universalist' view of China, its social arrangements and its culture? As Willis is aware, and seems to be wary of, the former can lead to 'exoticism' and Orientalism in our accounts; the latter can take us to other extremes of dismissing differences as merely local matters within a generalized story of human 'progress'. We might indeed ask whether the use of concepts of 'the modern' and of 'modernity' as a framework for 'progress' might lead us in the latter direction: are they tools of an homogenizing approach to cultural analysis?

Abstract:This article reviews teaching intercultural competence in the classroom with a group of homogeneous Chinese university students. This is explored through teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing in a way that changes Chinese students' thinking. It involves a change of cultural perspectives by placing the concept of 'the individual' at the heart of their learning and writing in English. This cultural change through alternative thinking strategies demands that Chinese students critically examine their collective traditions and beliefs that have otherwise influenced their assumptions in learning and in writing in English. This article is derived from teaching strategies that facilitate change through a biographical teaching method, which ensures a personal paradigm shift in the student towards becoming a global citizen.

The present study, applying historicism, points out that these papers, though informative, are far from adequate for lack of equal importance attached to journal papers and books, and to some events of historic significance. The objective of the present study is, therefore, to make up for some missing links in these papers. A rhetorical approach out of various perspectives on ICS is called for so that teachers and students of ICS in China would be better informed to realize effective intercultural communication in English. To this end, this paper first points out that to trace the origin of the relationship between language and culture is a bit far-fetched, for no one could possibly pin down exactly when the relationship was perceived between culture and FLE in general and English teaching in particular. Then a more comprehensive account is made of the development of ICS in China for English Teaching. Third, some barriers in furthering ICS for English teaching in China are clarified as well as their causes. Fourth and finally, a rhetorical approach is suggested to ICS both for descriptions of cultural differences and evaluations of cultural elements that comprise a given culture. Abstract:Abstract: Chuang Tzu, one of ancient China’s cultural canons, has been translated into massive English versions in the past century. Consequently, these English renderings, to some extent, reflect the chronological change of reconceptualization of ancient China’s image from the people’s perspective from English-spoken countries. Thus, from the angle of imagology in comparative literature, this paper probes into the recreated ancient China’s images manifested through the refractions and transcreations in the English translations of Chuang Tzu interpreted by overseas translators. As a result, different national images have been found in Chung Tzu’s expedition into the English world, which respectively are a gospel-graced ancient China, a mysterious ancient China, an ecological ancient China and a multi-faceted ancient China. Through a meticulous study of the image variations, the operational mechanism of Sino-foreign translational communication has been clarified to better burrow into the formation of the Westerns’ general impression on the Eastern nation.

Abstract:In the history of western sinology and translation of Chinese literature during the 20 th Century,Arthur Waley( 1889—1966) has been a legendary figure. Despite his love for Chinese history and culture,the immensity of translation works,and his reputation in the English-speaking world,he had never been to China. His understanding of China was mainly acquired from reading,a country that existed in texts and history,an ancient country filled with imagination and construction. Thanks to Waleyu0027s profession and reputation,he had frequent contacts with Chinese intellectuals who were visiting or living in the UK. These Chinese intellectuals were from the elite class of their times who were considered as outstanding figures of China,so to Waley,they represented the living China,serving as symbols of the actual China. Communication with these Chinese intellectuals allowed Waley to have certain direct contact with the actual China,and contributed positively to Waleyu0027s close experience of Chinese culture,studies on Chinese history and culture,and his translation project of Chinese poetry and fiction.

Abstract:This chapter is built on the research data of a study with 20 Chinese university teachers of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) regarding their intercultural competence teaching. This work also draws on our own lived experience as former EFL teachers in China and as learners and researchers in Canada (Xu, 2000; Xu & Stevens, 2005; Xu, 2006; Zhou, 2007; Xu & Connelly, 2009). In addition to linguistic competence, it is also necessary for Chinese English teachers and learners to develop intercultural competence, the ability of intercultural understanding and mediation, in order to achieve effective and smooth intercultural and international communication (Corbett, 2003).

Abstract:With the status of English as a global lingua franca (ELF), English is no longer the sole property of its Anglophone native English speakers (NES) problematizing the current dominance of Anglophone cultures and NES in the field of English language teaching (ELT). The notion of intercultural citizenship education offers a critical alternative model in language education. To investigate how ELF, intercultural approaches and the concept of intercultural citizenship might be integrated within the field of ELT, a study was conducted in a university located in southeast China. Due to the large number of ELT learners and high degree of student mobility in China these are issues of much relevance in this setting. The research collected qualitative data through face-to-face interviews, email interviews and focus groups with students on study abroad programmes who have both ELT and first-hand intercultural experiences. Many students spoke positively about aspects of intercultural citizenship, but classroom instruction offered only limited channels for students to experience and understand intercultural communication and citizenship. In contrast, most of their understanding and experiences were gained outside the classroom during study abroad. Furthermore, many students spoke about the importance of English in their development of intercultural connections and citizenship. We conclude that more in-depth and critical approaches to teaching language, culture and intercultural communication in ELT are needed which foster and cultivate students’ sense of intercultural citizenship.
