Abstract:This mixed-method study explored academics' beliefs about interdisciplinary research collaboration (IDRC) and their influences on collaborative practices in a Chinese research university. Exploratory interviews with nine academics were first conducted to examine their beliefs about IDRC. The findings revealed that the academics' beliefs about IDRC fell into six broad themes, that is, IDRC: helps better address research problems; helps achieve innovative results; helps expand new academic fields; is challenging which requires crossing boundaries among disciplines; is a gradual process that takes plenty of time and effort; and is not necessary as some research problems can be addressed through within-disciplinary research. Based on the interview findings, a questionnaire was developed to examine the influences of academics' beliefs about IDRC on their self-reported collaborative practices and then administered to 659 academics in the university. Results showed that four of the six beliefs significantly and positively affected self-reported collaborative practice; one belief significantly and negatively affected self-reported collaborative practice; and one belief had no significant effect on self-reported collaborative practice. Differences existed among the academics of different disciplines regarding the influence of their beliefs about IDRC on self-reported collaborative practice. The practical implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are discussed.

It researches the status quo in humanities, the growth of social development science and cross-disciplinary social science, and the maturity of applied social science. In addition, it further highlights the important roles of economics, management, and library and information science in the collaboration network of humanities and social science with their extensive intra-disciplinary cooperation and crucial roles in the whole collaboration network.

International Scientific Collaboration of China: Collaborating Countries, Institutions and Individuals

Abstract:Using bibliometric methods, we investigate China's international scientific collaboration from 3 levels of collaborating countries, institutions and individuals. We design a database in SQL Server, and make analysis of Chinese SCI papers based on the corresponding author field. We find that China's international scientific collaboration is focused on a handful of countries. Nearly 95% international co-authored papers are collaborated with only 20 countries, among which the USA account for more than 40% of all. Results also show that Chinese lineage in the international co-authorship is obvious, which means Chinese immigrant scientists are playing an important role in China's international scientific collaboration, especially in English-speaking countries.

Abstract:This paper aims to identify the collaboration pattern and network structure of the coauthorship network of library and information science (LIS) in China. Using data from 18 core source LIS journals in China covering 6 years, we construct the LIS coauthorship network. We analyze the network from both macro and micro perspectives and identify some key features of this network: this network is a small-world network, and follows the scale-free character. In the micro-level, we calculate each author's centrality values and compare them with citation counts. We find that centrality rankings are highly correlated with citation rankings. We also discuss the limitation of current centrality measures for coauthorship network analysis.

Abstract:International collaboration is one of the effective ways to enhance the impact of scientific research papers. In this research, international research collaboration papers published by world-class universities in the field of humanities and social sciences from 2015 to 2019 were selected as the research object, and the effective enhancement of the impact of international research collaboration papers was found to not be dependent on expanding the scale of international research collaboration, but rather on selecting researchers with different international backgrounds and from high-level institutions for collaboration. It was also discovered that, in the field of humanities and social sciences, despite a relatively low proportion of international research collaboration papers being led by Chinese scholars, the Chinese research is characterized by a higher impact compared with the research led by non-Chinese scholars. In light of this, a series of proactive measures should be taken by China’s world-class universities, such as actively participating in and initiating international collaboration, selecting high-level research collaborators, and attracting scholars from different countries to engage in research collaboration in the field of humanities and social sciences.

Abstract:In the context of the "Double First-Class" plan for Chinese higher education, the internationalization of discipline becomes an inevitable trend. The "Prosperity Project of Philosophy and Social Science (2011—2020),"which was formulated by Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Finance (MOF), also put forward the "go global" and "bring in" strategies. The internationalization of references is not only an important means to realize the strategy of "bring in" but also an indicator to measure scholars' international vision. Therefore, this paper does an empirical study on Library and Information Science (LIS). Sixteen journals indexed by the Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) since 1998 are selected to explore the internationalization of references in LIS journal papers and to reveal the scholars' international vision. The paper then explores the factors affecting the internationalization of references and puts forward some specific suggestions for the internationalization of LIS in China.
Collaboration Size and Citation Impact in Big Data Research.

Abstract:With rapid and widespread application, Big Data has attracted growing attention from academic communities. Concerning the importance of collaboration in scientific research, the current study focused on profiles of collaboration types and size, as well as their relations with citation impact based on publications indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) from 2003 to 2017, so as to provide decision-making basis for optimizing collaboration options. Results show that collaborated publications, as well as collaboration size (i.e., number of authors, institutions and countries) in Big Data have grown substantially. Within-institutional collaboration plays a main role, while international collaboration takes relatively low but rising share. Citation impact is dependent on collaboration types with international collaboration the most efficient, followed by domestic one. None-collaboration receives the least citations. Team size increases over time in general, and is positively related with citation impact, and such phenomenon exists in different collaboration types. Among all the research fields involved, Mathematics and Computer Science is the main contributor in publications and also benefits the most in collaboration despite of its limited team size.

Abstract:In the past 30 years, publications from either China or Germany have increased exponentially with China growing much faster especially in the natural sciences, engineering and technology. In medical and health sciences, however, China still lags behind Germany in terms of publication production. Germany performs better in producing high-quality papers (measured by citations). Collaboration between the two countries has increased significantly, especially in the natural sciences and engineering and technology, but less so in medical and health sciences. Collaboration between China and Germany may help to raise quality of Chinese research in terms of highly cited papers.

Abstract:Due to the advance of information technology and the widely used social network on internet, research is being done in an open environment. While the researchers may share the published research achievements in paper format, it’s essential for the research groups to find the potential academic collaboration chance between them and the large scale academic social network. This article is to present our solution to find the chance of academic collaboration between different research groups in such an open research community. A prototype has been made and the core algorithms and an experiment with main interfaces are introduced.

Abstract:In this paper, we use bibliometric methods and social network analysis to analyze the pattern of China-US scientific collaboration on individual level in nanotechnology. Results show that Chinese-American scientists have been playing an important role in China-US scientific collaboration. We find that China-US collaboration in nanotechnology mainly occurs between Chinese and Chinese-American scientists. In the co-authorship network, Chinese-American scientists tend to have higher betweenness centrality. Moreover, the series of polices implemented by the Chinese government to recruit oversea experts seems to contribute a lot to China-US scientific collaboration.

Abstract:AbstractScientific collaboration is essential in solving problems and breeding innovation. Coauthor network analysis has been utilized to study scholars' collaborations for a long time, but these studies have not simultaneously taken different collaboration features into consideration. In this paper, we present a systematic approach to analyze the differences in possibilities that two authors will cooperate as seen from the effects of homophily, transitivity, and preferential attachment. Exponential random graph models ERGMs are applied in this research. We find that different types of publications one author has written play diverse roles in his/her collaborations. An author's tendency to form new collaborations with her/his coauthors' collaborators is strong, where the more coauthors one author had before, the more new collaborators he/she will attract. We demonstrate that considering the authors' attributes and homophily effects as well as the transitivity and preferential attachment effects of the coauthorship network in which they are embedded helps us gain a comprehensive understanding of scientific collaboration.
Patterns and Impact of Collaboration in China’s Social Sciences: Cross-Database Comparisons Between CSSCI and SSCI

Abstract:This study quantitatively analyzes the patterns and impact of collaboration at author and country levels in China's social sciences from 1998 to 2017. Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) are combined as data sources to show a comprehensive picture of collaboration in China's social sciences, and to compare the differences in the way Chinese social scientists work when publishing nationally and internationally. Results show that there are huge differences in patterns and impact of collaboration between China's national and international publications in social sciences. Specifically, non-collaboration dominates in China's CSSCI papers while collaboration dominates in China's SSCI papers; two-authored is the main form of collaboration in China's CSSCI papers but the teamwork of three or more authors is the main form in China's SSCI papers; few of China's CSSCI papers are published in international collaboration but Sino-foreign cooperation is very common in China's SSCI papers; collaboration benefits citations of China's SSCI papers in all disciplines but international collaboration doesn't work well for citations of China's CSSCI papers. Besides, similarities between China's national and international publications can also be observed, e.g., disciplines more cooperative in China's CSSCI papers are also those more cooperative in China's SSCI papers; the top ten countries collaborate with China in CSSCI and SSCI are the same, and the USA accounts for about half of Sino-foreign collaborations in both CSSCI and SSCI. Finally, the usage of bibliometric databases and possible reasons for collaboration differences are discussed.

Abstract:Scientific research has been increasingly globalized over the past decades. Each country may choose to collaborate more closely with some countries than others, resulting in non-trivial structural patterns in international collaboration networks. While the structure of the collaboration networks among countries has been widely studied, the origin of such structure still lacks of systematic exploration. Analyzing bibliometric data from six disciplines, this paper reveals four categories of significant drivers for the collaboration closeness between countries, namely science, economy, geopolitics, and culture respectively. Countries with large and equivalent scientific sizes, as well as economic sizes, are more likely to collaborate closely with each other. In particular, comemberships in intergovernmental organizations largely promote close collaboration in science. Cultural links, including the shared language and religion, also facilitate close collaboration between countries. The analytical results shall provide insights on policy-making regarding the design of national research systems and international collaboration strategies.

Abstract:With the opening of Chinese publication market,many international publishing groups are entering Chinese journal market.English language science journals of Chinese universities have many problems such as comprehensiveness,low influence,and narrow distribution.The cooperation with international publishing groups is helpful for oversea circulation;and therefore,can enlarge the readership and authorship and promote the international influences of the journals.The characteristics of the English science journals of Chinese universities lead to the situation that they focus more on the influence than the financial benefits in the cooperation.We should be more active in the cooperation with international publishing groups,make full use of the services that they can provide,and be credible to gain double wins.

Abstract:Purpose This study analyzed the interdisciplinary characteristics of Chinese research studies in library and information science (LIS) measured by knowledge elements extracted through the Lexicon-LSTM model. Design/methodology/approach Eight research themes were selected for experiment, with a large-scale (N = 11,625) dataset of research papers from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database constructed. And it is complemented with multiple corpora. Knowledge elements were extracted through a Lexicon-LSTM model. A subject knowledge graph is constructed to support the searching and classification of knowledge elements. An interdisciplinary-weighted average citation index space was constructed for measuring the interdisciplinary characteristics and contributions based on knowledge elements. Findings The empirical research shows that the Lexicon-LSTM model has superiority in the accuracy of extracting knowledge elements. In the field of LIS, the interdisciplinary diversity indicator showed an upward trend from 2011 to 2021, while the disciplinary balance and difference indicators showed a downward trend. The knowledge elements of theory and methodology could be used to detect and measure the interdisciplinary characteristics and contributions. Originality/value The extraction of knowledge elements facilitates the discovery of semantic information embedded in academic papers. The knowledge elements were proved feasible for measuring the interdisciplinary characteristics and exploring the changes in the time sequence, which helps for overview the state of the arts and future development trend of the interdisciplinary of research theme in LIS.

Fronts and Prospects on Scientific Collaboration Between the Two Sides of the Straits: Visualization Coauthor of Advantage Disciplines

Abstract:Cooperation and synergy development in science between the Mainland and Taiwan is an important component that belongs to collaboration and development of both sides of Taiwan Straits.From JD Bernard′s science of sciences view about science collaboration,this paper took scientrometrics and knowledge visualization methods as tools to analyze scientific articles represented scientific collaboration of both Sides and enrolled by SCI for detecting scientific cooperation trends and research fronts.The results have shown that the number of collaborated articles was increasing with total papers of each Side growing in nearly 20 years and these literatures related to wide range fields but their distribution was uneven: 41.62% of them was distributed in Physics,Mathmatics and Material Sciences,which are the developing quickly and relative advantaged disciplines of both Sides.Three cooperation patterns can be summarized in the three disciplines using co-citation knowledge mapping created by advanced visualization technique called Citespace: in Physics,the pattern is named single key point following the fronts with the help of third party while in Mathmatics,it can be called multi-key points to exploring fronts based on common advantage of both Sides and in Material Sciences,it can be characterized as detecting fronts dispersedly through complementing each other's advantages.The future of scientific cooperation between both Sides also has been looked into distance and several proposals have been suggested: the fronts of scientific collaboration between both Sides should be expanded into synergy innovation of the both Sides,the industy-technology-research-development alliance made of joint ventures should be established in order to develop industrial technologies for civil use and joint industries,universities and institutions together.Such alliance also should be developed a cyber-enabled discovery-innovation system under network environment.
A Study on the Author Collaboration Network in Big Data*

Abstract:In order to obtain a deeper understanding of the collaboration status in the big data field, we investigated the author collaboration groups and the core author collaboration groups as well as the collaboration trends in big data by combining bibliometric analysis and social network analysis. A total of 4130 papers from 13,759 authors during the period of 2011–2015 was collected. The main results indicate that 3483 of the papers are coauthored (i.e., 84.33% of all papers) from 12,016 coauthors (i.e., 87.33% of all authors), which represent a reputable level of collaboration. On the other hand, 91.83% of all the identified coauthors have published only one paper so far, reflecting a poor level of maturity of such authors. Through social network analysis, we observed that the author collaboration network is composed of small author collaboration groups and also that the authors are mainly from the computer science & technology field. As an important contribution of our study, we further analyzed the author collaboration network, culminating in the generalization of four subnet modes, which were defined by some papers: ‘dual-core’, ‘complete’, ‘bridge’ and ‘sustainable development’. It was found that the dual-core mode stands for the stage that researchers have just begun to study big data. Beginning of big data research, the complete mode tends to joint research, both the dual-core and complete modes are mostly engaged in the same project, and the bridge mode and the sustainable development mode represent, respectively, the popular and valued directions in the big data field. The results of this study can be useful for researchers interested in finding suitable partners in the big data field. By tracking the core authors and the key author collaboration groups, one can learn about the current developments in the big data field as well as predict the development prospects of such a field. Therefore, we expect with the results of our study summarized in this paper to contribute to a faster development of the big data field.
