Abstract:MOX (M = Fe, Co, Mn, Cr, Lanthanide, or Actinide metals; O = oxygen, X = F, Cl, Br, I), an emerging type of 2D layered materials, have been theoretically predicted to possess unique electronic and magnetic properties. However, 2D MOX have rarely been investigated. Herein, for the first time, ultrathin high‐quality ytterbium oxychloride (YbOCl) single crystals are successfully synthesized via an atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition method. Both theoretical simulations and experimental measurements are utilized to systematically investigate the Raman properties of 2D YbOCl nanosheets. The experimentally observed Eg mode at 85.53 cm−1 and A1g mode at 138.17 cm−1 demonstrate a good match to the results from density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the temperature‐dependent and thickness‐dependent Raman scattering spectra reveal the adjacent layers in YbOCl nanosheets show a relatively weak van der Waals interaction. Additionally, the polarized‐dependent Raman scattering spectra show the intensity of A1g mode exhibits twofold patterns while the intensity of the Eg mode remains constant as the rotation angle changes. These findings could provide the first‐hand experimental information about the 2D YbOCl crystals.

Abstract:This paper reports the growth and spectral assessments of Yb3+ ion doped MgMoO4 (Yb3+: MgMoO4) crystal grown by the TSSG method. Polarized spectral properties of Yb3+: MgMoO4 crystal, including absorption and emission cross-sections, absorption FWHM and fluorescence lifetime, have been investigated. The laser performance parameters beta(min), I-sat and I-min have also been evaluated. All the investigated results show the Yb3+-doped MgMoO4 crystal is expected as a promising candidate for ultrashort pulse and tunable lasers.

Abstract:The rare-earth sesquioxides (RE2O3, RE=Lu, Y and Sc) are promising host materials for solid-state lasers due to their low phonon energy and high thermal conductivity. On the other hand, Tm3+ and Yb3+ are preferable activators for advanced laser diode pumped solid-state lasers. In addition to that, Tm-doped materials can be used for eye-safe lasers application. Tm-doped Y2O3 single crystals were grown using the micro-pulling-down method. Crystals were transparent with gray and blue colors of 4.2mm in diameter and 13–20mm in length. The crystallinity was characterized using X-ray rocking curve analysis. Tm-doped Y2O3 single crystals have a good compositional homogeneity along the growth axis and their thermal conductivity was calculated from the measurements of thermal diffusivity, heat capacity and density. We have also recorded absorption, fluorescence spectra and measured fluorescence lifetimes as a function of the Tm content, we have found a very attractive fluorescence around the eye-safe wavelength of 1.9mm which corresponds to a 3F4→3H6 transition of Tm3+.

Abstract:Tm3+-doped CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 single crystal was successfully grown by the Czochralski method. The crystal structure, polarized absorption spectra and polarized emission spectra of Tm:CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 crystals were investigated. By using the Judd–Ofelt approach, the intensity parameters Ω2,4,6, spontaneous transition rate, branching ratios and radiative lifetimes were calculated. Diode-end-pumped continuous-wave Tm:CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 lasers have also been investigated by establishing a simple and compact plane-concave cavity with four differently coated output couplers. Four different lasing wavelengths at about 2029 nm, 2000 nm, 1966 nm and 1888 nm have been achieved with maximum output power and slope efficiency of (1.98 W, 15.1%), (5.89 W, 46.2%), (6.92 W, 54.9%) and (5.54 W, 44.7%), respectively. The results in regard to the broad emission spectra and good laser performance show that the Tm:CaY0.9Lu0.1AlO4 mixed crystal could be very promising for broadband tunable and/or femtosecond ultrafast laser generation in the important 2-μm spectral region.

Abstract:0.45 at. % Yb doped 12(0.11)Y(0.8)(9)VO(4) and La0.15Y0.85VO4 mixed crystals were grown by the Czochralski method, the structures and polarized spectroscopic properties were systematically studied. The fluorescence lifetimes of these two crystals were 355 and 374 mu s, respectively. Continuous wave laser performances of the alpha-cut mixed crystals were demonstrated, with Yb:La0.11Y0.89VO4, a maximum output power of 1.97 W was achieved at the absorbed pump power of 7.58 W. Passive Q-switched laser with MoS2 as saturable absorber was also achieved, and the maximum average output power was 82 mW at a repetition rate of 200 kHz with a slope efficiency of 20%. Abstract:Nd3+ and Yb3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 crystals with the size 25 mm×100 mm were grown by the Czochralski method.The habit of as-grown crystal was discussed and the phase of crystal was analyzed by XRD.The characteristics of thermal expansion were measured and the coefficient of thermal expansion of c axis was twice as much as a axis.Polarized absorption spectra,fluorescence spectra,and fluorescence decay curve were measured at room temperature.The standard and modified Judd-Ofelt theories have been performed to analyze the absorption spectra and the spectroscopic parameters.Results show that Yb3+ doped NaY(WO4)2 crystals have relatively large luminescent quantum efficiency.The Nd3+∶NaY(WO4)2 crystal was made into laser stick and and the laser experiment was performed using a xenon flash lamp as a pump source.Maximum pulse energy of 786 mJ with a repetition rate of 1Hz has been obtained.A maxinum output power of 87 mW and the double-frequency conversion efficiency is more than 25%,slope efficiency is 7.98%.

Abstract:The sesquioxide Lu 2 O 3 possesses superior physical and chemical properties and emerges as a promising host material for high-power laser applications. However, Lu 2 O 3 has an extremely high melting point, making it difficult to prepare large-size and high-quality crystals. In this paper, we report the growth of a Yb:Lu 2 O 3 crystal with dimensions of Φ50.7 × 43.0 mm 3 using the temperature gradient technique (TGT) combined with the directional solidification technique. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the high-resolution X-ray rocking curve of the crystal was determined to be 58.76 arcsec. Additionally, the optical homogeneity root mean square (RMS) was 10 −5 . The thermal properties, spectroscopic characterization, and continuous wave (CW) laser operation of Yb:Lu 2 O 3 crystal were systematically studied. The results demonstrate the efficacy of the TGT as a novel approach for growing large-sized Lu 2 O 3 crystals of exceptional quality.

Abstract:A novel mid-infrared Ho:Lu0.1Y0.9AlO3 laser crystal with a size of Φ26 mm × 80 mm was grown successfully by the Czochralski method. The crystal structure was characterized in detail by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffractions: Pnma (62) space group, a = 5.3234 Å, b = 7.3517 Å, c = 5.1670 Å, V = 202.22 Å3, and Z = 1. The X-ray rocking curves show that the crystal possesses high crystalline quality. It was observed by a transmission electron microscope that all atoms are neatly arranged and all elements are uniformly distributed. Meanwhile, the refractive index curves from 400 to 3000 nm at three crystalline axes and Mohs hardness were also achieved. The thermal expansion coefficient is 4.382 × 10–6 K–1, and thermal conductivity is 5.872 W·m–1·K–1. Particularly, the maximum phonon energy is only 552 cm–1, as exhibited by the Raman spectrum. Finally, the transmission, fluorescence spectra, and level lifetimes were measured and compared, which provided a basis for subsequent spectral theoretical analysis and laser experiment.

Abstract:High quality Yb and Ho co-doped Y(3)A1(5)0(12) single crystal fibers have been successfully grown by the laser heated pedestal growth method of up to 124 mm in length and 450 mu m in diameter for the first time. The results of inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry analysis, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy reveal that the lattice structure and doping concentrations of the SCF are the same as that of the bulk. Abstract:The saturable absorbers play key role in passively Q-switched lasers, and Cr4+-doped crystals present attractive advantages for Yb:YAG lasers. At present the major problem is the low doping concentration of Cr4+ and the effective way to promote Cr3+→Cr4+ conversion. From this view, we introduce divalent additives Ca2+ and Mg2+ as charge compensators to ensure the charge state of Cr4+ in the tervalence environment of Yb:YAG. The results reveal that this method can promote Cr3+→Cr4+ conversion effectively and an optimal CaO/MgO ratio is 1:4. The corresponding Cr0.01at.%,Yb5at.%:YAG single crystals present enhanced absorption coefficients and fluorescence intensity at 941 nm and 1030 nm, and decreased fluorescence lifetimes and decay curves than Yb:YAG. The thermal expansion coefficient and laser damage threshold of Cr,Yb:YAG single crystal are approaching the YAG host material. The results show that Cr,Yb:YAG crystal has good potential for self-Q-switched monolithic solid-state lasers.

Abstract:We present the growth, spectroscopy, continuous-wave (CW) and passively mode-locked (ML) operation of a novel "mixed" tetragonal calcium rare-earth aluminate crystal, Yb3+:Ca(Gd,Y)AlO4. The absorption, stimulated-emission, and gain cross-sections are derived for π and σ polarizations. The laser performance of a c-cut Yb:Ca(Gd,Y)AlO4 crystal is studied using a spatially single-mode, 976-nm fiber-coupled laser diode as a pump source. A maximum output power of 347 mW is obtained in the CW regime with a slope efficiency of 48.9%. The emission wavelength is continuously tunable across 90 nm (1010 - 1100 nm) using a quartz-based Lyot filter. With a commercial SEmiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror to initiate and maintain ML operation, soliton pulses as short as 35 fs are generated at 1059.8 nm with an average output power of 51 mW at ∼65.95 MHz. The average output power can be scaled to 105 mW for slightly longer pulses of 42 fs at 1063.5 nm.

Abstract:In this research, 1 at.% Ho3+, x at.% Yb3+: NaY0.1Gd0.9(WO4)2 (x = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) crystals were successfully prepared by Czochralski method. The XRD results demonstrated that the tetragonal structure of NaY0.1Gd0.9(WO4)2 cannot be changed by doping Ho3+ and Yb3+ ions. According to the absorption spectrum, emission spectrum and decay curve of the crystals, the J-O intensity parameter and emission cross-section can be obtained. These results showed that the as-prepared Ho3+, Yb3+: NaY0.1Gd0.9(WO4)2 crystal was suitable as candidates for 2.0 μm near-infrared laser gain material.

Abstract:Yb:CaGdAlO4, or Yb:CALGO, a new laser crystal, has been attracting increasing attention recently in a myriad of laser technologies. This crystal features salient thermal, spectroscopic and mechanical properties, which enable highly efficient and safe generation of continuous-wave radiations and ultrafast pulses with ever short durations. More specifically, its remarkable thermal-optic property and its high conversion efficiency allow high-power operation. Its high nonlinear coefficient facilitates study of optimized mode locking lasers. Besides, its ultrabroad and flat-top emission band benefits the generation of complex structured light with outstanding tunability. In this paper, we review the recent advances in the study of Yb:CALGO, covering its physical properties as well as its growing applications in various fields and prospect for future development.

Abstract:Dy3+:YAP and Dy3+,Tm3+:YAP single crystals have been successfully obtained by Czochralski (CZ) method aiming for ∼3 μm emission. The optical absorption and emission features of both crystals were studied in detail. A narrow and weak absorption band around 800 nm as well as the up-conversion emissions under the excitation of 802 nm in Dy3+:YAP crystal, along with a weak ∼3 μm emission were observed, indicating that Dy3+:YAP crystal was not suitable for direct pumping under 800 nm excitation. Tm3+ ion was introduced as a sensitizer for enhancing ∼3 μm emission. It was found that co-doping with Tm3+ greatly improved the absorption capacity around 800 nm. And thus an enhanced ∼2.84 μm emission was realized in Dy3+,Tm3+:YAP crystal under 795 nm excitation. The energy transfer mechanisms between Tm3+ and Dy3+ ions were discussed, and high microscopic energy transfer constants between Tm3+ and Dy3+ ions were obtained, proving that Tm3+ ion could act as an effective sensitizer for Dy3+ ion in YAP crystal. Following the obtained spectroscopic results, Dy3+,Tm3+:YAP crystal could be a promising medium for ∼3 μm laser operation under 795 nm laser diode for practical applications.

Abstract:A Li3Ba2Nd3(MoO4)8 crystal has been grown by the flux method for the first time. The crystal structure has been refined at room temperature using single crystal X-ray diffraction data. X-ray investigations showed that the newly synthesized compound crystallizes in a monoclinic structure, space group C2/c with the following unit-cell dimensions: a=5.281301A°, b=12.8725(2)A°, c=19.2549(2)A°, V=1308.83A°3, Z=2 and ρ=5.095gcm−3. The absorption and emission spectra of Li3Ba2Nd3(MoO4)8 crystal at room temperature have also been studied. The heat capacity was measured from 25 to 300°C. These results show that Li3Ba2Nd3(MoO4)8 crystal is a potential laser crystal.

Abstract:Mid-infrared waveband lasers have demonstrated important applications in the fields of atmosphere pollution monitoring, gas flow monitoring, ocean detection, laser medicine, military confrontation and basic scientific researches etc. In this paper, we review the research development of bulk crystal growth, physicochemical, spectral and laser properties of 2.5–5.0 μm waveband mid-infrared laser crystals in recent years. A serial of gallate and aluminate crystals with low phonon energy were grown by the Czochralski method, such as Er3+ activated and rare earth ions co-doped Gd3Ga5O12(GGG), SrGdGa3O7, SrLaGa3O7, CaYAlO4 and CaGdAlO4 crystals, Ho3+ activated and rare earth ions co-doped GGG crystals, as well as Dy3+:YAlO3 crystals, and 2.5–3.4 μm waveband emissions were obtained in these crystals. High quality Dy3+:KPb2Cl5, Cr2+:CdSe and Cr2+:Fe2+:CdSe crystals were grown by the Bridgman method, and 2.5–5.0 μm waveband emissions were obtained in these crystals. The physicochemical and spectral properties of the above crystals were studied systematically, with focus on analyses of the concentration effect of activated ions Er3+, the sensitization mechanism of the co-dopant sensitized ions and the impact of the depopulated ions on the inhibition of self-termination effect. The fluorescence dynamic of the activated ions within the mid-infrared waveband, the energy transfer efficiencies between activated ions and co-dopant sensitization ions, as well as between the activated ions and co-dopant depopulation ions were calculated, and the energy transfer mechanism was discussed. Based on the results of spectroscopic investigations, the concentrations of Er3+, the types and the concentrations the co-dopant sensitization ions were optimized in different kinds of crystals. The laser properties of Er3+ activated GGG, CaYAlO4 crystals were presented. Finally, 2.7–2.8 µm multi-wavelength CW or pulsed lasers were achieved in Er:GGG, Er,Pr:GGG and Er:GGG/GGG composite crystals end-pumped by 965 nm LD or in Cr,Er:YSGG crystals by Xenon lamp, furthermore, the single longitudinal mode microchip laser was achieved in Er:GGG crystal for the first time.
Spectroscopy and 3.01 μm laser performance of Ho:YAP oxide crystal pumped by 1150 nm Raman laser

Abstract:We demonstrate the spectroscopy and mid-infrared laser performance on the Ho:YAP oxide crystal grown by the Czochralski method in detail. The crystal belongs to orthorhombic system of Pnmb (62) space group and shows high crystalline quality. The lifetimes of 5 I 6 and 5 I 7 levels are 0.412 and 4.485 ms, respectively. Particularly, under 1150 nm Raman fiber laser pumping, a 3.01 μm CW laser with a maximum power of 181 mW and slope-efficiency of 3.35% is achieved. The M 2 factor of 1.35/1.37 indicates that the yield laser has excellent beam quality. The results reveal that the Ho:YAP crystal possesses great potential for developing efficient 3.0 μm mid-infrared lasers.
