Abstract:The D^1\Pi_u - X^1\Sigma_g^+ absorption system of molecular deuterium has been re-investigated using the VUV Fourier -Transform (FT) spectrometer at the DESIRS beamline of the synchrotron SOLEIL and photon-induced fluorescence spectrometry (PIFS) using the 10 m normal incidence monochromator at the synchrotron BESSY II. Using the FT spectrometer absorption spectra in the range 72 - 82 nm were recorded in quasi static gas at 100 K and in a free flowing jet at a spectroscopic resolution of 0.50 and 0.20 cm^{-1} respectively . The narrow Q-branch transitions, probing states of \Pi^- symmetry, were observed up to vibrational level v = 22. The states of \Pi^+ symmetry, known to be broadened due to predissociation and giving rise to asymmetric Beutler-Fano resonances, were studied up to v = 18. The 10 m normal incidence beamline setup at BESSY II was used to simultaneously record absorption, dissociation, ionization and fluorescence decay channels from which information on the line intensities, predissociated widths, and Fano q-parameters were extracted. R-branch transitions were observed up to v = 23 for J = 1-3 as well as several transitions for J = 4 and 5 up to v = 22 and 18 respectively. The Q-branch transitions are found to weakly predissociate and were observed from v = 8 to the final vibrational level of the state v = 23. The spectroscopic study is supported by two theoretical frameworks. Results on the \Pi^- symmetry states are compared to ab initio multi-channel-quantum defect theory (MQDT) calculations, demonstrating that these calculations are accurate to within 0.5 cm^-1.

Abstract:A high-resolution VUV laser absorption spectroscopy is used to investigate the photon-induced ion-pair formation in D 2 in the spectral region from 140117.4 to 140732.0 cm −1 . We report determination of photoionization efficiency in ortho-para D 2 in supersonic molecular beam with energy resolution of 0.1 cm −1 . The assignment of the superexcited D 2 Rydberg states is done based on the quantum defect theory.

Abstract:A theoretical investigation of electron-D2 resonant collisions - via the low lying and the Rydberg states of D2- - is presented for vibrational excitation, dissociative electron attachment and dissociative excitation processes by using the local-complex-potential approach. Full sets of vibrationally resolved cross sections, involving the ground electronic state - X 1{\Sigma}+g - and the first two electronic excited states - b 3{\Sigma}+u and B 1{\Sigma}+ u - of the D2 molecule, are given for fusion plasma applications in their technologically relevant partially dissociated, detached divertor regimes. In particular, transitions between electronic excited states are also considered. Comparisons are made with cross sections present in the literature, where available

Abstract:The triatomic hydrogen ion (H$_3^+$) has spurred tremendous interest in astrophysics in recent decades, and Rydberg states of H$_3$ have also maintained an important role for understanding H$_3^+$ experiments. In a previous study [J. Chem. Phys. \textbf{133}, 234302 (2010)], radiative transitions between neutral H$_3$ Rydberg states were calculated at wavelengths near 7 microns, and could be compared with mid-infrared laser lines observed in hydrogen/rare gas discharges. The present study extends the investigation to wavelengths near 10 -- 13 microns. Rydberg states of D$_3$ are also treated.

Synchrotron VUV radiation studies of the D^1Π_u State of H_2

Abstract:The 3p\pi D^1\Pi_u state of the H_2 molecule was reinvestigated with different techniques at two synchrotron installations. The Fourier-Transform spectrometer in the vacuum ultraviolet wavelength range of the DESIRS beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron was used for recording absorption spectra of the D^1\Pi_u state at high resolution and high absolute accuracy, limited only by the Doppler contribution at 100 K. From these measurements line positions were extracted, in particular for the narrow resonances involving ^1\Pi_u^- states, with an accuracy estimated at 0.06 cm^{-1} . The new data also closely match MQDT-calculations performed for the \Pi^- components observed via the narrow Q-lines. The \Lambda-doubling in the D^1\Pi_u state was determined up to v=17. The 10 m normal incidence scanning monochromator at the beamline U125/2 of the BESSY II synchrotron, combined with a home built target chamber and equipped with a variety of detectors was used to unravel information on ionization, dissociation and intramolecular fluorescence decay for the D^1\Pi_u vibrational series. The combined results yield accurate information of the characteristic Beutler-Fano profiles associated with the strongly predissociated \Pi_u^+ parity components of the D^1\Pi_u-levels. Values for the parameters describing the predissociation width as well as the Fano-q line shape parameters for the J=1 and J=2 rotational states were determined for the sequence of vibrational quantum numbers up to v=17.

Abstract:The present knowledge of Lamb shift, fine- and hyperfine structure of the $\mathrm{2S}$ and $\mathrm{2P}$ states in muonic deuterium is reviewed in anticipation of the results of a first measurement of several $\mathrm{2S-2P}$ transition frequencies in muonic deuterium ($\mu\mathrm{d}$). A term-by-term comparison of all available sources reveals reliable values and uncertainties of the QED and nuclear structure-dependent contributions to the Lamb shift, which are essential for a determination of the deuteron rms charge radius from $\mu\mathrm{d}$. Apparent discrepancies between different sources are resolved, in particular for the difficult two-photon exchange contributions. Problematic single-sourced terms are identified which require independent recalculation.

Influence of epithermal muonic molecule formation on kinetics of the $μ$CF processes in deuterium

Abstract:The non-resonant formation of $dd\mu$ molecules in the loosely bound state in collisions of non-thermalized $d\mu$ atoms with deuterium molecules D$_2$ has been considered. The process of such a type is possible only for collision energies exceeded the ionization potential of D$_2$. The calculated rates of $dd\mu$ formation in the above-threshold energy region are about one order of magnitude higher than obtained earlier. The role of epithermal non-resonant $\mu$-molecule formation for the kinetics of $\mu$CF processes in D$_2$ gas was studied. It was shown that the non-resonant $dd\mu$ formation by $d\mu$ atoms accelerated during the cascade can be directly observed in the neutron time spectra at very short initial times.

Abstract:Saturated absorption measurements of transitions in the (2-0) band of radioactive tritium hydride are performed with the ultrasensitive noise-immune cavity-enhanced optical-heterodyne molecular spectroscopy intracavity absorption technique in the range 1460–1510 nm. The hyperfine structure of rovibrational transitions of tritium hydride, in contrast to that of hydrogen deuteride, exhibits a single isolated hyperfine component, allowing for the accurate determination of hyperfineless rovibrational transition frequencies, resulting in R(0)=203 396 426 692(22) kHz and R(1)=205 380 033 644(21) kHz . This corresponds to an accuracy 3 orders of magnitude better than previous measurements in tritiated hydrogen molecules. Abstract:Deuterated molecules are important chemical tracers of prestellar and protostellar cores. Up to now, the titular reaction has been assumed to contribute to the generation of these deuterated molecules. We have measured the merged-beams rate coefficient for this reaction as function of the relative collision energy in the range of about 10 meV to 10 eV. By varying the internal temperature of the reacting H$_3^+$ molecules, we found indications for the existence of a reaction barrier. We have performed detailed theoretical calculations for the zero-point-corrected energy profile of the reaction and determined a new value for the barrier height of $\approx$ 68 meV. Furthermore, we have calculated the tunneling probability through the barrier. Our experimental and theoretical results show that the reaction is essentially closed at astrochemically relevant temperatures. We derive a thermal rate coefficient of $<1\times 10^{-12}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for temperatures below 75 K with tunneling effects included and below 155 K without tunneling.

Potential energy and dipole moment surfaces of H3- molecule

Abstract:A new potential energy surface for the electronic ground state of the simplest triatomic anion H3- is determined for a large number of geometries. Its accuracy is improved at short and large distances compared to previous studies. The permanent dipole moment surface of the state is also computed for the first time. Nine vibrational levels of H3- and fourteen levels of D3- are obtained, bound by at most ~70 cm^{-1} and ~ 126 cm^{-1} respectively. These results should guide the spectroscopic search of the H3- ion in cold gases (below 100K) of molecular hydrogen in the presence of H3- ions.

Abstract:The predissociation mechanism of D-2 near the threshold for the production of the D(2s, 2p) fragments has been studied by measuring the fragment yield spectra, fragment velocity map images, and fragment branching ratios D(2s)/(D(2s) + D(2p)) using a combination of XUV laser and velocity map imaging. The predissociation dynamics of the 2p pi C-1 Pi(+/-)(u)(v = 19) and 3p pi D-1 Pi(+/-)(u)(v = 4,5) states were studied. The 2p pi C-1 Pi(+/-)(u)(v = 19) state is a bound state due to a shallow barrier. For the R(0) transition to the 2p pi C-1 Pi(+)(u)(v = 19) state, the experimental results suggest that the predissociation occurs via three channels with decreasing importance: l-uncoupling with the 2p sigma B-1 Sigma(+)(u) state, tunneling, and l-uncoupling with the 3p sigma B-'1 Sigma(+)(u) state. For the R(1) transition to the 2p pi C-1 Pi(+)(u)(v = 19) state, the first channel plays the dominant role. For the Q(1) transition to the 2p pi C-1 Pi(-)(u)(v = 19) state, the predissociation occurs via tunneling as required by symmetry. For the predissociation of the 3p pi D-1 Pi(+)(u)(v = 4,5) states, the experimental data confirm the earlier results indicating that the main perturbing state is 3p sigma B-'1 Sigma(+)(u). The Beutler-Fano profiles and the associated spectroscopic parameters for the various predissociations have also been obtained. The measured Fano-parameters q for the P- and R-branches of the 3p pi D-1 Pi(+)(u) state are found to have opposite signs, and their relationships are in agreement with a formula derived from the Fano equation. Rotationally resolved Beutler-Fano profiles were measured for the P(2) and P(3) lines.

Abstract:The vibrational wave-packet dynamics of diatomic rubidium molecules (Rb2) in triplet states formed on the surface of superfluid helium nanodroplets is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Detailed comparison of experimental femtosecond pump-probe spectra with dissipative quantum dynamics simulations reveals that vibrational relaxation is the main source of dephasing. The rate constant for vibrational relaxation in the first excited triplet state is found to be constant ~0.5ns^-1 for the lowest vibrational levels v< 15 and to increase sharply when exciting to higher energies.

Abstract:High-resolution coherent Raman spectroscopic measurements of all three tritium-containing molecular hydrogen isotopologues T$_2$, DT and HT were performed to determine the ground electronic state fundamental Q-branch ($v=0 \rightarrow 1, \Delta J = 0$) transition frequencies at accuracies of $0.0005$ cm$^{-1}$. An over hundred-fold improvement in accuracy over previous experiments allows the comparison with the latest ab initio calculations in the framework of Non-Adiabatic Perturbation Theory including nonrelativisitic, relativisitic and QED contributions. Excellent agreement is found between experiment and theory, thus providing a verification of the validity of the NAPT-framework for these tritiated species. While the transition frequencies were corrected for ac-Stark shifts, the contributions of non-resonant background as well as quantum interference effects between resonant features in the nonlinear spectroscopy were quantitatively investigated, also leading to corrections to the transition frequencies. Methods of saturated CARS with the observation of Lamb dips, as well as the use of continuous-wave radiation for the Stokes frequency were explored, that might pave the way for future higher-accuracy CARS measurements.

Abstract:The vibrational overtone band of monodeuterated methane (CH3D) in the region 5900-6100 cm(-1) was recorded by a high resolution Fourier transform spectrometer. Rotational analyses were performed separately for the parallel 2v(4)(A(1)) and perpendicular 2v(4)(E) bands, whose origins were found to be 5980.41 cm(-1) and 6022.21 cm(-1), respectively. The A(l) band displays J-resolved rotational structure while the K structure is resolved only at higher J values. A resonance Hamiltonian with the polyad number P = 2n(1) + 2n(4) + n(5) is derived using the fourth order Canonical Van Vleck Perturbation Theory (CVPT) to show that the 2v(4)(A(1)) and 2v(4)(E) are vibrationally perturbed by Fermi and Darling-Dennison resonances. The observation of rotational l-resonance in the 2v(4)(E) band is a consequence and evidence of the mixing of the vibrational states with different l values.
Photoionization from the ground and excited vibrational states of H+2 and its deuterated isotopologues

Abstract:Photoionization cross sections and rate coefficients have been calculated for all bound vibrational levels of the 1s$\sigma_{\mathrm{g}}$ state of H$_{2}^{+}$, HD$^{+}$, and D$_{2}^{+}$. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation is employed in our calculation of vibrationally-resolved photoionization cross sections. Vibrationally-resolved and local thermal equilibrium photoionization rate coefficients are presented for photon temperatures less than $50\,000$ K and are found to be several orders of magnitude larger than previous results in the literature. Analytic fits for the vibrationally-resolved and local thermal equilibrium photoionization rate coefficients are provided. Near threshold oscillations in the vibrationall-resolved photoionization are observed. A benchmark set of photoionization cross sections are presented. Fixed-nuclei photoionization cross sections are calculated using two-center true continuum wave functions and are verified by comparison with previous calculations and are found to be in excellent agreement in all cases. Abstract:The ionization of a gas molecule has been experimentally studied by measurement of both the electron-molecule ionization cross section in an electron beam, Qi, and the electron ionization coefficient of an electron swarm, alpha /N. The results are presented for both hydrogen and deuterium and a comparison of the theoretical values of alpha /N, calculated from the present values of Qi using various electron energy distribution functions, F( epsilon ), with the present experimental values of alpha /N in hydrogen, indicates which form of F( epsilon ) is most probable in this gas.

Abstract:We provide cross sections and Maxwell rate coefficients for reactive collisions of slow electrons with BeH$^+$ ions on all the eighteen vibrational levels ($X{^{1}\Sigma^{+}},v_{i}^{+}=0,1,2,\dots,17$) using a Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory (MQDT) - type approach. These data on dissociative recombination, vibrational excitation and vibrational de-excitation are relevant for magnetic confinement fusion edge plasma modelling and spectroscopy, in devices with beryllium based main chamber materials, such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and the Joint European Torus (JET). Our results are presented in graphical form and as fitted analytical functions, the parameters of which are organized in tables.

Measurement of Quadrupole Deformation using E$2$ and M$1+$E$2$ Transitions in Heavy Isotopes in the Mass Range of $150<A<250$

Abstract:The measurement of a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) in atoms is crucial for understanding the origins of CP-violation. However, accurate interpretation of the EDM in systems involving deformed isotopes requires the characterization of their deformation. While nuclear deformation is indicated in various structure models, there is substantial mutual disagreement between the theoretical models or between theoretical models and experimental values. Nuclear E$2$ transitions allow access to quantify quadrupole deformation, but these transitions are often mixed with M$1$ transitions. Both E$2$ and M$1$ transitions are well characterized by Weisskopf estimates, which rely on a single-particle approximation, but deviate due to collective nuclear deformations. Previously, Weisskopf estimates were only available for the mass range $A<150$, and in this work we have extended the Weisskopf estimates of both E$2$ and M$1$ transition lifetimes to the mass range of $150\le A\le 250$. We comprehensively studied the deviation of E$2$ and M$1+$E$2$ transition lifetimes from the newly established Weisskopf estimates in $91$ candidate isotopes, by comparing the transition lifetimes of the candidate isotopes to their nearest even-even counterparts, whose E$2$ transition strengths are very well understood. Estimates of collective nuclear quadrupole deformation in $67$ of these isotopes were thus obtained, either from E$2$ or M$1+$E$2$ transition lifetimes. In $32$ cases they were obtained from both types of transitions independently, and are mutually consistent, as well as following the trends established in theory. We thereby identify the isotopes $^{223,225}$Fr, $^{221,223}$Ra, $^{223,225,227}$Ac and $^{229}$Pa, where EDM measurements are foreseen and information on nuclear deformation is needed, for which no measurement of nuclear quadrupole deformation has been made.

Deuterium Separation by Multiphoton Dissociation of Dichlorofluoromethane

Abstract:Absorption and dissociation probabilities of CHCl2F and CDCl2F were investigated by a pulsed CO2 laser in the wavenumber region of largest selectivity for deuterium. The absorption of CHCl2F, which is a difference band, can largely be suppressed by cooling. At 200 K and at 920 cm−1 absorption selectivities up to 4000 were found by extrapolation. In the presence of buffer gas, CDCl2F can be multiphoton excited nearly like a linear absorber (“harmonic oscillator”). This is interpreted by a nearly resonant collisional relaxation v7 to v2 and by the smallness of the cross anharmonicity x27. The dissociation selectivityS was 24,000 at natural abundance. Such large values were measured by a chromatographic method.S depends only onpD, the partial pressure of the deuterated species. This dependence is approximately ln S∝p D −1 . It can be rationalized by considering only the average energy transferred to the nonresonant molecules by collisions with CDCl2F. The above functional shape is related to an Arrhenius type law. Comparison with trifluoromethane for D separation shows that CHCl2F has primarily two advantages: its rapid H-D exchange with water and the less stringent requirements of laser energy and pulse length.
First detection and absolute transition frequencies in the (3–0) band of D2

Abstract:Three electric quadrupole transitions in the second overtone band of D2 are newly measured by comb-referenced cavity ring down spectroscopy around 1.18 μm. These extremely weak transitions (line intensities smaller than 10−29 cm/molecule) are the first to be detected in the (3–0) band of D2. The spectra of the O(3), O(2), and Q(2) lines near 8321, 8446, and 8607 cm−1, respectively, are recorded at room temperature for pressure values ranging between 100 and 600 Torr. Accurate transition frequencies and line intensities of the three D2 transitions are determined from a line fitting procedure using beyond-Voigt profiles, including strong Dicke narrowing. Considering statistical fit errors and possible biases due to the interference with water lines (which are six orders of magnitude stronger than the studied D2 lines), total uncertainties on the frequencies extrapolated at zero pressure are estimated below 14 MHz (∼4.7 × 10−4 cm−1). The derived experimental frequencies and intensities are compared to ab initio values. An overall agreement is achieved, confirming the positional accuracy of the most advanced theoretical calculations.
