Abstract:Abstract We fit various colour--magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the high-latitude Galactic globular clusters NGC\,5024 (M53), NGC\,5053, NGC\,5272 (M3), NGC\,5466, and NGC\,7099 (M30) by isochrones from the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database and Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones for $\alpha$--enrichment [$\alpha$/Fe]$=+0.4$. For the CMDs, we use data sets from {\it Hubble Space Telescope}, {\it Gaia}, and other sources utilizing, at least, 25 photometric filters for each cluster. We obtain the following characteristics with their statistic uncertainties for NGC\,5024, NGC\,5053, NGC\,5272, NGC\,5466, and NGC\,7099, respectively: metallicities [Fe/H]$=-1.93\pm0.02$, $-2.08\pm0.03$, $-1.60\pm0.02$, $-1.95\pm0.02$, and $-2.07\pm0.04$ dex with their systematic uncertainty 0.1 dex; ages $13.00\pm0.11$, $12.70\pm0.11$, $11.63\pm0.07$, $12.15\pm0.11$, and $12.80\pm0.17$ Gyr with their systematic uncertainty 0.8 Gyr; distances (systematic uncertainty added) $18.22\pm0.06\pm0.60$, $16.99\pm0.06\pm0.56$, $10.08\pm0.04\pm0.33$, $15.59\pm0.03\pm0.51$, and $8.29\pm0.03\pm0.27$ kpc;reddenings $E(B-V)=0.023\pm0.004$, $0.017\pm0.004$, $0.023\pm0.004$, $0.023\pm0.003$, and $0.045\pm0.002$ mag with their systematic uncertainty 0.01 mag; extinctions $A_\mathrm{V}=0.08\pm0.01$, $0.06\pm0.01$, $0.08\pm0.01$, $0.08\pm0.01$, and $0.16\pm0.01$ mag with their systematic uncertainty 0.03 mag, which suggest the total Galactic extinction $A_\mathrm{V}=0.08$ across the whole Galactic dust to extragalactic objects at the North Galactic pole. The horizontal branch morphology difference of these clusters is explained by their different metallicity, age, mass-loss efficiency, and loss of low-mass members in the evolution of the core-collapse cluster NGC\,7099 and loose clusters NGC\,5053 and NGC\,5466.

High-Resolution Spectroscopic Observations of [ital]hipparcos[/ital] Red Clump Giants: Metallicity and Mass Determinations

Abstract:We obtain high-resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of 39 red clump giants selected from the Hipparcos Catalogue. We determine their atmospheric parameters, iron abundances, alpha -element enhancements, and masses. We find that the sample can be divided into a metal-poor group and a metal-rich group. The majority of the stars are metal-rich (Z>0.3 Z(.)) with mass around 2 M-., while the metal-poor group has lower surface gravity and lower mass. The variation of alpha -element abundances with [Fe/H] agrees with that of local G and K disk dwarfs. We also show that the metallicity is weakly correlated with the I-band absolute magnitude and the V-I color, in agreement with Udalski's recent findings. We make the high-resolution spectra available over the internet for interested readers.
Near-Infrared Imaging of the Central Regions of Metal-Poor Inner Spheroid Globular Clusters

Abstract:JHK images obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) Adaptive Optics Bonnette (AOB) are used to investigate the near-infrared photometric properties of red giant branch (RGB) and horizontal branch (HB) stars in eight metal-poor globular clusters with R_GC < 2 kpc. The slope of the RGB on the (K, J-K) CMDs confirms the metal-poor nature of these clusters, four of which appear to have metallicities comparable to M92. The luminosity functions of RGB stars in inner spheroid and outer halo clusters have similar slopes, although there is a tendency for core-collapsed clusters to have slightly flatter luminosity functions than non-collapsed clusters. The distribution of red HB stars on the (K, J-K) CMDs of inner spheroid clusters with [Fe/H] ~ -1.5 is very different from that of clusters with [Fe/H] ~ -2.2, suggesting that metallicity is the main parameter defining HB content among these objects. The RGB-bump is detected in four of the inner spheroid clusters, and this feature is used to compute distances to these objects. Finally, the specific frequency of globular clusters in the inner Galaxy is discussed in the context of the early evolution of the bulge. If the globular cluster formation efficiency for the inner Galaxy is similar to that measured in other spheroidal systems, then the main body of the bulge could have formed from gas that was chemically enriched in situ.

Abstract:(Abridged) The present number of Galactic Open Clusters that have high-resolution abundance determinations, not only of [Fe/H], but also of other key elements, is largely insufficient to enable a clear modeling of the Galactic Disk chemical evolution. We obtained high-resolution (R~30000), high quality (S/N~50-100 per pixel), echelle spectra with FOCES, at Calar Alto, for 3 red clump stars in each of five Open Clusters. We used the classical Equivalent Width analysis method to obtain accurate abundances of 16 elements. We also derived the oxygen abundance through spectral synthesis of the 6300A forbidden line. Three of the clusters were never studied previously with high-resolution: we found [Fe/H]=+0.03 +/- 0.02 dex for Cr110; [Fe/H]=+0.01 +/- 0.05 dex for NGC2099 (M37) and [Fe/H]=-0.05 +/- 0.03 dex for NGC2420. For the remaining clusters, we find: [Fe/H]=+0.05 +/- 0.02 dex for M67 and [Fe/H]=+0.04 +/- 0.07 dex for NGC7789. We provide the first high-resolution based velocity estimate for Cr110, V=41.0 +/- 3.8 km/s. All our programme stars show abundance patterns typical of open clusters. Also, no significant sign of (anti-)correlations is found. We then compile high-resolution data of 57 clusters from the literature and we find a gradient of [Fe/H] with Galactocentric Radius of -0.06 +/- 0.02 dex/kpc, in agreement with past work. A change of slope is seen outside RGC=12 kpc and [alpha/Fe] shows a tendency of increasing with RGC. We also confirm the absence of a significant Age-Metallicity relation.

Abstract:We fit various colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the Galactic globular clusters NGC\,6397 and NGC\,6809 (M55) by isochrones from the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database (DSED) and Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones (BaSTI) for $\alpha$-enhanced [$\alpha$/Fe]$=+0.4$. For the CMDs, we use data sets from {\it HST}, {\it Gaia}, VISTA, and other sources utilizing 32 and 23 photometric filters for NGC\,6397 and NGC\,6809, respectively, from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared. We obtain the following characteristics for NGC\,6397 and NGC\,6809, respectively: metallicities [Fe/H]$=-1.84\pm0.02\pm0.1$ and $-1.78\pm0.02\pm0.1$ (statistic and systematic uncertainties); distances $2.45\pm0.02\pm0.06$ and $5.24\pm0.02\pm0.18$ kpc; ages $12.9\pm0.1\pm0.8$ and $13.0\pm0.1\pm0.8$ Gyr; reddenings $E(B-V)=0.178\pm0.006\pm0.01$ and $0.118\pm0.004\pm0.01$ mag; extinctions $A_\mathrm{V}=0.59\pm0.01\pm0.02$ and $0.37\pm0.01\pm0.04$ mag; extinction-to-reddening ratio $R_\mathrm{V}=3.32^{+0.32}_{-0.28}$ and $3.16^{+0.66}_{-0.56}$. Our estimates agree with most estimates from the literature. BaSTI gives systematically higher [Fe/H] and lower reddenings than DSED. Despite nearly the same metallicity, age, and helium enrichment, these clusters show a considerable horizontal branch (HB) morphology difference, which must therefore be described by another parameter. This parameter must predominantly explain why the least massive HB stars (0.58-0.63 solar masses) are only found within NGC 6809. Probably they have been lost by the core-collapse cluster NGC\,6397 during its dynamical evolution and mass segregation. In contrast, NGC\,6809 has a very low central concentration and, hence, did not undergo this process.

The Color-Magnitude Relation for Metal-Poor Globular Clusters in M87: Confirmation From Deep HST/ACS Imaging

Abstract:Metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) are our local link to the earliest epochs of star formation and galaxy building. Studies of extragalactic GC systems using deep, high-quality imaging have revealed a small but significant slope to the color-magnitude relation for metal-poor GCs in a number of galaxies. We present a study of the M87 GC system using deep, archival HST/ACS imaging with the F606W and F814W filters, in which we find a significant color-magnitude relation for the metal-poor GCs. The slope of this relation in the I versus V-I color-magnitude diagram (gamma(I) =-0.024 +/- 0.006) is perfectly consistent with expectations based on previously published results using data from the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey. The relation is driven by the most luminous GCs, those with M(I) less than or similar to -10, and its significance is largest when fitting metal-poor GCs brighter than M(I) = -7.8, a luminosity which is similar to 1 mag fainter than our fitted Gaussian mean for the luminosity function (LF) of blue, metalpoor GCs (similar to 0.8 mag fainter than the mean for all GCs). These results indicate that there is a mass scale at which the correlation begins, and is consistent with a scenario where self-enrichment drives a mass-metallicity relationship. We show that previously measured half-light radii of M87 GCs from best-fit PSF-convolved King models are consistent with the more accurate measurements in this study, and we also explain how the color magnitude relation for metal-poor GCs is real and cannot be an artifact of the photometry. We fit Gaussian and evolved Schechter functions to the luminosity distribution of GCs across all colors, as well as divided into blue and red subpopulations, finding that the blue GCs have a brighter mean luminosity and a narrower distribution than the red GCs. Finally, we present a catalog of astrometry and photometry for 2250 M87 GCs.

Abstract:The vertebrate nervous system is one of the main sites where retinoids and related binding proteins play their critical roles. The cerebellum is subjected to the effects of retinoids over its lifetime. The retinoid binding proteins are differently expressed during life: CRBP I, expressed in the adult cerebellum, is possibly involved in plasticity during memory processes. CRABP I, expressed in the embryonic cerebellum, is involved in the development of the organ and in cellular differentiation. In particular, since the expression of CRABP I coincides with earliest cerebellar differentiation, it is probably involved in this critical step, participating in a complex network of regulatory genes expressed in the mes/methencephalon such as Fgf8, Wnt1, En1/2, Pax2/5, Otx2 and Gbx2. Finally, the way for metabolic synchronization of isthmic cell populations and the putative existence of alternative pathways for CRABP I to regulate RA are discussed.
Deep Chandra Monitoring Observations of NGC 4649: II. Wide-Field Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of the Globular Clusters

Abstract:We present g and z photometry and size estimates for globular clusters (GCs) in the massive Virgo elliptical NGC 4649 (M60) using a five-pointing Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys mosaic. The metal-poor GCs show a monotonic negative metallicity gradient of −0.43 ± 0.10 dex per dex in radius over the full radial range of the data, out to ∼24 kpc. There is evidence for substantial color substructure among the metal-rich GCs. The metal-poor GCs have typical sizes ∼0.4 pc larger than the metal-rich GCs out to large galactocentric distances (≳ 20 kpc), favoring an intrinsic explanation for the size difference rather than projection effects. There is no clear relation between half-light radius and galactocentric distance beyond ∼15 kpc, suggesting that the sizes of GCs are not generically set by tidal limitation. Finally, we identify ∼20 candidate ultracompact dwarfs that extend down to surprisingly faint absolute magnitudes (Mz ∼ −8.5), and may bridge the gap between this class and “extended clusters” in the Local Group. Three of the brighter candidates have published radial velocities and can be confirmed as bona fide ultracompact dwarfs; follow-up spectroscopy will determine the nature of the remainder of the candidates.
Exploring the Chemistry and Mass Function of the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae with New Theoretical Color–Magnitude Diagrams

Abstract:Despite their shared origin, members of globular clusters display star-to-star variations in composition. The observed pattern of element abundances is unique to these stellar environments and cannot be fully explained by any proposed mechanism. It remains unclear whether stars form with chemical heterogeneity or inherit it from interactions with other members. These scenarios may be differentiated by the dependence of chemical spread on stellar mass; however, obtaining a sufficiently large mass baseline requires abundance measurements on the lower main sequence, which is too faint for spectroscopy even in the nearest globular clusters. We developed a stellar modeling method to obtain precise chemical abundances for stars near the end of the main sequence from multiband photometry, and we applied it to the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. The computational efficiency is attained by matching chemical elements to the model components that are most sensitive to their abundance. We determined [O/Fe] for ∼5000 members below the main-sequence knee at the level of accuracy, comparable to the spectroscopic measurements of evolved members in the literature. The inferred distribution disfavors stellar interactions as the origin of chemical spread; however, an accurate theory of accretion is required to draw a more definitive conclusion. We anticipate that future observations of 47 Tucanae with the James Webb Space Telescope will extend the mass baseline of our analysis into the substellar regime. Therefore, we present predicted color–magnitude diagrams and mass–magnitude relations for the brown dwarf members of 47 Tucanae.

Abstract:We investigate the Nth order amplitude squeezing in the fan-state |\xi ;2k,f>_F which is a linear superposition of the 2k-quantum nonlinear coherent states. Unlike in usual states where an ellipse is the symbol of squeezing, a 4k-winged flower results in the fan state. We first derive the analytical expression of squeezing for arbitrary k, N, f and then study in detail the case of a laser-driven trapped ion characterized by a specific form of the nonlinear function f. We show that the lowest order in which squeezing may appear and the number of directions along which the amplitude may be squeezed depend only on k whereas the precise directions of squeezing are determined also by the other physical parameters involved. Finally, we present a scheme to produce such fan-states.

Photometric metallicity for 694233 Galactic giant stars from Gaia DR3 synthetic Stromgren photometry. Metallicity distribution functions of halo sub-structures

Abstract:We use the calibrations by Calamida et al. and by Hilker et al., and the standardised synthetic photometry in the v, b, and y Stromgren passbands from Gaia DR3 BP/RP spectra, to obtain photometric metallicities for a selected sample of 694233 old Galactic giant stars having |b|>20.0 and parallax uncertainties lower than 10%. The zero point of both sets of photometric metallicities has been shifted to to ensure optimal match with the spectroscopic [Fe/H] values for 44785 stars in common with APOGEE DR17, focusing on the metallicity range where they provide the highest accuracy. The metallicities derived in this way from the Calamida et al. calibration display a typical accuracy of ~0.1 dex and 1 sigma precision ~0.2 dex in the range -2.2 <=[Fe/H]<= -0.4, while they show a systematic trend with [Fe/H] at higher metallicity, beyond the applicability range of the relation. Those derived from the Hilker et al. calibration display, in general, worse precision, and lower accuracy in the metal-poor regime, but have a median accuracy < 0.05 dex for [Fe/H]>= -0.8. These results are confirmed and, consequently, the metallicities validated, by comparison with large sets of spectroscopic metallicities from various surveys. The newly obtained metallicities are used to derive metallicity distributions for several previously identified sub-structures in the Galactic halo with an unprecedented number of stars. The catalogue including both sets of metallicities and the associated uncertainties is made publicly available.

Abstract:Aims. We present colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of young massive star clusters in several galaxies located well beyond the Local Group. The richness of these clusters allows us to obtain large samples of post-main sequence stars and test how well the observed CMDs are reproduced by canonical stellar isochrones. Methods. We use imaging of seven clusters in the galaxies NGC 1313, NGC 1569, NGC 1705, NGC 5236 and NGC 7793 obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope and carry out PSF-fitting photometry of individual stars in the clusters. The clusters have ages in the range ~(5−50) × 106 years and masses of ~105 M⊙–106 M⊙. Although crowding prevents us from obtaining photometry in the inner regions of the clusters, we are still able to measure up to 30–100 supergiant stars in each of the richest clusters. The resulting CMDs and luminosity functions are compared with photometry of artificially generated clusters, designed to reproduce the photometric errors and completeness as realistically as possible. Results. In agreement with previous studies, our CMDs show no clear gap between the H-burning main sequence and the He-burning supergiant stars, contrary to predictions by common stellar isochrones. In general, the isochrones also fail to match the observed number ratios of red-to-blue supergiant stars, although the difficulty of separating blue supergiants from the main sequence complicates this comparison. In several cases we observe a large spread (1–2 mag) in the luminosities of the supergiant stars that cannot be accounted for by observational errors. We find that this spread can be reproduced by including an age spread of ~(10−30) × 106 years in the models. However, age spreads cannot fully account for the observed morphology of the CMDs and other processes, such as the evolution of interacting binary stars, may also play a role. Conclusions. Colour–magnitude diagrams can be successfully obtained for massive star clusters out to distances of at least 4–5 Mpc. Comparing such CMDs with models based on canonical isochrones we find several areas of disagreement. One interesting possibility is that an age spread of up to ~30 Myr may be present in some clusters. The data presented here may provide useful constraints on models for single and/or binary stellar evolution.

CCD time-series photometry of variable stars in globular clusters and the metallicity dependence of the horizontal branch luminosity

Abstract:We describe and summarize the findings from our CCD time-series photometry of globular clusters (GCs) program and the use of difference image analysis (DIA) in the extraction of very precise light curves even in the crowded central regions down to $V\sim 19$ mag. We have discovered approximately 250 variable stars in a sample of 23 selected GCs and have, therefore, updated the census of variables in each system and in some cases we have actually completed it down to a certain magnitude. The absolute magnitude and [Fe/H] for each individual RR Lyrae is obtained via the Fourier decomposition of the light curve. An average of these parameters leads to the distance and metallicity of the host GCs. We have also calibrated the P-L relation for SX Phe stars which enables an independent calculation of the cluster distance. We present the mean [Fe/H], $M_V$ and distance for a group of selected GCs based exclusively on the RR Lyrae light curve Fourier decomposition technique and set on a rather unprecedented homogeneous scale. We also discuss the luminosity dependence of the horizontal branch (HB) via the $M_V$-[Fe/H] relation. We find that this relation should be considered separately for the RRab and RRc stars.

Wide Field Near-Infrared Photometry of 12 Galactic Globular Clusters: Observations Versus Models on the Red Giant Branch

Abstract:We present wide field near-infrared photometry of 12 Galactic globular clusters, typically extending from the tip of the cluster red giant branch (RGB) to the main sequence turnoff. Using recent homogenous values of cluster distance, reddening and metallicity, the resulting photometry is directly compared to the predictions of several recent libraries of stellar evolutionary models. Of the sets of models investigated, Dartmouth and Victoria-Regina models best reproduce the observed RGB morphology, albeit with offsets in J-Ks color which vary in their significance in light of all sources of observational uncertainty. Therefore, we also present newly recalibrated relations between near-IR photometric indices describing the upper RGB versus cluster iron abundance as well as global metallicity. The influence of enhancements in alpha elements and helium are analyzed, finding that the former affect the morphology of the upper RGB in accord with model predictions. Meanwhile, the empirical relations we derive are in good agreement with previous results, and minor discrepancies can likely be attributed to differences in the assumed cluster distances and reddenings. In addition, we present measurements of the horizontal branch (HB) and RGB bump magnitudes, finding a non-negligible dependence of the near-IR HB magnitude on cluster metallicity. Lastly, we discuss the influence of assumed cluster distances, reddenings and metallicities on our results, finding that our empirical relations are generally insensitive to these factors to within their uncertainties.

Abstract:We present a model-fit pipeline to determine the stellar parameters of M-type dwarfs, which is an improvement upon our previous work described in Hejazi et al. 2020. We apply this pipeline to analyze the low-resolution (R~2000) spectra of 3745 M dwarfs/subdwarfs, collected at the MDM Observatory, Lick Observatory, Kitt Peak National Observatory, and Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory. We examine the variation of the inferred parameter values in the HR diagram constructed from their Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) parallaxes and optical magnitudes. We also study the distribution of our stars in the abundance diagram of [alpha/Fe] versus [M/H] and inspect the variation of their metallicity class, effective temperature, and surface gravity as well as their Galactic velocity components U, V, and W in this diagram. In addition, the analyses of the stars' projected motions in the two-dimensional UV, VW, and UW planes and the variation of their chemical parameters in these planes, and also their distribution in the abundance-velocity diagrams are important parts of this study. The precision of our model-fit pipeline is confirmed by the clear stratification of effective temperature and chemical parameters in the HR diagram, the similarity of the stars' distribution in the [alpha/Fe] versus [M/H] diagram and in the metallicity-velocity planes with those from other studies, revealing substructure in the abundance-velocity diagrams, and chemical homogeneity between the components of a set of binary systems.

Abstract:We aim to analyze the chemical evolution of the Small Magellanic Cloud adding 12 additional clusters to our existing sample having accurate and homogeneously derived metallicities. We are particularly interested in seeing if there is any correlation between age and metallicity for the different structural components to which the clusters belong. Spectroscopic metallicities of red giant stars are derived from the measurement of the equivalent width of the near-IR calcium triplet lines. Cluster membership analysis was carried out using criteria that include radial velocities, metallicities, proper motions and distance from the cluster center. The mean cluster radial velocity and metallicity were determined with a typical error of 2.1 km/s and 0.03 dex, respectively. We added this information to that available in the literature for other clusters studied with the same method, compiling a final sample of 48 clusters with metallicities homogeneously determined. Clusters of the final sample are distributed in an area of ~ 70 deg^2 and cover an age range from 0.4 Gyr to 10.5 Gyr. The metallicity distribution of our new cluster sample shows a lower probability of being bimodal than suggested in previous studies. The separate chemical analysis of clusters in the six components (Main Body, Counter-Bridge, West Halo, Wing/Bridge, Northern Bridge and Southern Bridge) shows that only clusters belonging to the Northern Bridge appear to trace a V-Shape, showing a clear inversion of the metallicity gradient in the outer regions. There is a suggestion of a metallicity gradient in the West Halo, similar to that previously found for field stars. It presents, however, a very large uncertainty. Also, clusters belonging to the West Halo, Wing/Bridge and Southern Bridge exhibit a well-defined age-metallicity relation with relatively little scatter in abundance at fixed age compared to other regions.

Abstract:We present the results of combined optical and near-infrared photometry for the globular cluster systems of the giant ellipticals IC 4051 and NGC 3311. We use the reduced age-metallicity degeneracy in (V-I) vs.(V-H) color-color diagrams to derive the cumulative age distribution within the red sub-population of globular clusters and to search for age sub-populations. The age distribution is then compared to the one determined for simulated globular cluster systems in order to set constraints on the relative age and size of these globular cluster sub-populations. In both galaxies we find a significant fraction of globular clusters with ages between 2- 5 Gyr. We also investigate the metallicity distribution in both systems. Small number statistics prevent us from making any definite statements concerning NGC 3311, but we find that the derived metallicity distribution of the IC 4051 clusters strongly depends on the assumed age distribution. Based on our most likely result that finds a large number of young/intermediate age clusters (~2 Gyr) within the selected globular cluster sample, we find metallicity peaks at $\sim$ -0.2 for the old clusters and +0.8 for the young clusters. Only few very metal poor clusters are found. However, the metallicity distribution within the young/intermediate globular cluster population is significantly affected by our choice of the applied Single Stellar Population model. The mean metallicity of the second generation of globular clusters changes from the above mentioned and extremely high +0.8 dex to +0.2 dex. Note that the model dependency becomes less severe with an increasing age of the cluster population.

Abstract:Despite their shared origin, members of globular clusters display star-to-star variations in composition. The observed pattern of element abundances is unique to these stellar environments, and cannot be fully explained by any proposed mechanism. It remains unclear whether stars form with chemical heterogeneity, or inherit it from interactions with other members. These scenarios may be differentiated by the dependence of chemical spread on stellar mass; however, obtaining a sufficiently large mass baseline requires abundance measurements on the lower main sequence that is too faint for spectroscopy even in the nearest globular clusters. We developed a stellar modelling method to obtain precise chemical abundances for stars near the end of the main sequence from multiband photometry, and applied it to the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. The computational efficiency is attained by matching chemical elements to the model components that are most sensitive to their abundance. We determined [O/Fe] for ~5000 members below the main sequence knee at the level of accuracy, comparable to the spectroscopic measurements of evolved members in literature. The inferred distribution disfavors stellar interactions as the origin of chemical spread; however, an accurate theory of accretion is required to draw a more definitive conclusion. We anticipate that future observations of 47 Tucanae with JWST will extend the mass baseline of our analysis into the substellar regime. Therefore, we present predicted color-magnitude diagrams and mass-magnitude relations for the brown dwarf members of 47 Tucanae.

Abstract:In order to address the problem of the validity of the "background field approximation", we introduce a dynamical model for a mirror described by a massive quantum field. We then analyze the properties of the scattering of a massless field from this dynamical mirror and compare the results with the corresponding quantities evaluated using the original Davies Fulling model in which the mirror is represented by a boundary condition imposed on the massless field at its surface. We show that in certain circumstances, the recoils of the dynamical mirror induce decoherence effects which subsist even when the mass of the mirror is sent to infinity. In particular we study the case of the uniformly accelerated mirror and prove that, after a certain lapse of proper time, the decoherence effects inevitably dominate the physics of the quanta emitted forward. Then, the vanishing of the mean flux obtained in the Davies Fulling model is no longer found but replaced by a positive incoherent flux.
