Abstract:A novel theoretical model of the component agent was proposed based on multi-layer finite state machine (FSM) and the requirements of collaborative design. And a new collaborative design-oriented product data model (CDPDM) was put forward. The CDPDM included three basic data modules (function data, structure data and management data) and a remote data modification module. This model had five characteristics: neutral representation, reusability, knowledge engineering, remote data modification and self-management. By combining the theoretical agent model with the CDPDM, a product component agent frame was proposed and some key issues, e. g. environment model construction, program and data encapsulation, software reuse and strategy set organization, were discussed. The practical application in demonstration enterprise shows that the proposed system can enhance the ability of the collaborative product design.

Abstract:Runtime reconfigurations of component- based systems must be undertaken with careful considerations of dependency between components. The safer and less disruptive a reconfiguration strategy is, the more accurate dependency information it needs. This paper proposes to manage dynamic dependency between components with mealy machine automatically derived from the implementation of components. To maintain the current dependency information for a component at runtime, the corresponding machine is instrumented into the component implementation in such a way that it is always synchronized with the execution of the component. We implemented a prototypical tool for this approach and evaluated it with a realistic benchmark application. The results show that our approach achieves a high accuracy and keeps low overheads without introducing any manual work.

Abstract:So far most research work done on software reverse engineering is mainly focused on the legacy systems, which are built on obsolete technologies, but contain a lot of information and knowledge about the certain application domain. However, software based on more recent technologies, such as component- based, also raises many issues during comprehension and evolution. Especially, the component models like in J2EE world are based on many technical aspects that make them difficult to understand and use. Thus, the evolution of component-based software becomes an emerging issue in reverse engineering area. In this paper we propose an idea to integrate reverse engineering with more recent systems based on the new technology, component-based, not only restricted to the legacy system. We also extend the existing graph based approaches to reverse engineering such systems. In our approach, the directed graph describes and manages dependencies among the components in the system based on the information extracted from source code, deployment descriptors and configuration files. With this component dependency graph, it helps developers to understand the system better, and ease the succeeding phases of reengineering the system.

Abstract:In this paper, a bottom-up architecture-based reliability estimation framework for component based software systems is presented. The approach takes the component composition mechanisms and the utilization frequency of each component into account, and it is general for different architecture styles. We first propose five basic component composition mechanisms and their reliability representation methods. Then we show how to estimate the reliability of heterogeneous architectures using these basic component composition mechanisms through an iterative process. Finally a case study of a stock trading system is used to illustrate the application of our approach.

A Component-Based Model Integrated Framework For Embedded Software

Abstract:The development of distributed, concurrent software in embedded systems is becoming increasingly complex and error-prone. Model-based integration of reusable components is advocated as the method of choice. To this end, we propose a framework to support component-based model integration, hierarchical functionality composition, and reconfiguration of systems with continuous and discrete dynamics. In this framework, components are designed and used as building blocks for integration, each of which is modeled with abstract ports, reactions, and communication schemes. It uses hierarchical composition to hide the implementation details of components, and keeps the components at the same level of hierarchy interacting under a well-defined model of computation. Code generation takes the design decisions down to the final running system. Within this framework, embedded software can be constructed by selecting and then connecting components in a functionality repository, specifying models and transforming them to executable codes.

Abstract:Modern embedded systems tend to be heterogeneous in the sense that components in a system have diverse interaction styles. Composition of subsystems with very different characteristic complicates embedded software development and challenges understandability, composability, and scalability of models. The paper describes a model driven component framework, Pcanel, to solve this problem. It proposes a hierarchical model structure and semantic framework that supports heterogeneous components. Pcanel drives component execution by models of computation, allowing the formal analysis, verification and validation of the embedded software. Models explicitly represent the designer's understanding of the system, and capture the requirements and the design of the application. The paper presents the principles and techniques of Pcanel in details. Examples in terms of real systems are given that illustrate how Pcanel addresses the heterogeneity nature and the assurance issues of embedded software composition.

Abstract:The rapidly increasing complexity of computing systems is driving the movement towards autonomic systems that are capable of managing themselves without the need for human intervention. Without autonomic technologies, many conventional systems suffer reliability degradation and compromised security. Autonomic management techniques reverse this trend. This study describes the roles and functions of various autonomic components, and systematically reviews past and current approaches that have been/are being developed to address specific areas of the autonomic computing environment that focus on improving system dependability including both reliability and security concerns. Analyzing past research can lead to the design of a more advanced, dependable autonomic computing system. A novel and promising prototypical system that is a work-in-progress will be presented finally.

Abstract:Service robots are complex, heterogeneous, software intensive systems built from components. Recent robotics research trends mainly address isolated capabilities on functional level. Non-functional properties, such as responsiveness or deterministic behavior, are addressed only in isolation (if at all). We argue that handling such non-functional properties on system level is a crucial next step. We claim that precise control over application-specific, dynamic execution and interaction behavior of functional components -- i.e. clear computation and communication semantics on model level without hidden code-defined parts -- is a key ingredient thereto. In this paper, we propose modeling concepts for these semantics, and present a meta-model which (i) enables component developers to implement component functionalities without presuming application-specific, system-level attributes, and (ii) enables system integrators to reason about causal dependencies between components as well as system-level data-flow characteristics. This allows to control data-propagation semantics and system properties such as end-to-end latencies during system integration without breaking component encapsulation.

Abstract:There is an increasing demand for the runtime reconfiguration of distributed systems in response to changing environments and evolving requirements. Reconfiguration must be done in a safe and low-disruptive way. In this paper, we propose version consistency of distributed transactions as a safe criterion for dynamic reconfiguration. Version consistency ensures that distributed transactions be served as if there were operating on a single coherent version of the system despite possible reconfigurations that may happen meanwhile. The paper also proposes a distributed algorithm to maintain dynamic dependences between components at architectural level and enable low-disruptive version-consistent dynamic reconfigurations. An initial assessment through simulation shows the benefits of the proposed approach with respect to timeliness and low degree of disruption.

Abstract:The proper operation of service-oriented architecture (SOA) strongly depends on the correct configuration of the service hosting environment that is essentially being shaped on a distributed system. Effective migration management of the distributed system is an absolute requirement to cope with intrinsic-changed nature of SOA. However, due to the large amount of configurations existing in the distributed system services and the complex dependencies among them, to migrate into a distributed system satisfying the operation requirement of SOA becomes an error-prone and time-consuming task. In this paper, we propose a model-based dependency management approach to migrate the distributed system services of the service hosting environment. Our approach has three contributions. Firstly, a model, called system service configuration model is defined for describing configuration parameters and the dependencies of different distributed system services. Secondly, based on the model, dependency management mechanisms are provided for validating the integrity of the configuration discovery process, checking the potentially cyclic dependencies and forming the correct setting sequence. Thirdly, a supporting tool, called system configuration migration (SCM), is implemented to demonstrate our approach, which has been deployed and used in the real migration cases.

Abstract:Service composition has become commonplace nowadays, in large part due to the increased complexity of software and supporting networks. Composition can be of many types, for instance sequential, prioritising, non-deterministic. However, a fundamental feature of the services to be composed consists in their dependencies with respect to each other. In this paper we propose a theory of service dependency, modelled around a dependency operator in the Action Systems formalism. We analyze its properties, composition behaviour, and refinement conditions with accompanying examples.

Abstract:Component is to have a solution to reuse software and the introduction of its attempt to a low self-up, pre-and large-scale custom-assembled to resolve the problem created the software system. On the market today there are a number of components-implemented model which have been widespread used. However, due to commercial secrets, companies or organizations are reluctant to develop a component model to integrate complete programs, which make it difficulty to carry out cross-component model interoperability. In this paper, a new component model is proposed based on the Web Service technology and the strong Assembly and Disassembly of components. By separating the component-based applications with the framework of the internal components, the proposed component model is reusable and consistent to multi-platforms. The analysis of relationship between the system framework and the component model proves that component management and mutual operations are implemented inside the system framework, and the systems based on the component model are open, flexible and maintainable.

Abstract:The functional features and QoS attributes of software components should be adapted during the stages of development lifecycle to match distinct applications demands in mass customization context. However, the researchers and developers of component-based software development system (CBSD) always ignore this fact. In this paper, we present a component management system to manage distributed software components for large-scale software system development. A concept of component repository was introduced as the basic logic unit for storage and management of the software components in accordance with development stage. The difference of operations permitted in each repository promised distinct applications and management demands of specific stage. Typically, software components were held in three disparate repositories: a design repository, a controlled repository and a product repository. The development of components from both engineering implementation and application assembly views are discussed. Automatic component transfer between component repositories was implemented in the charge of workflow. According to the concept of repository, there could be one-to-one correspondence between each software system and an independent database. Abstract:The new applications being intended for more and more heterogeneous environments, it is necessary to propose solutions of development which answer in best the necessities of adaptation of new services. Component-based programming partially answers this aim, allowing easy replacement of software blocks in order to provide the most adapted version of a component. Nevertheless, most of the industrial component-based model implementations do not allow to provide to components the most adapted technical services (naming, trading, security, transaction, etc.). In this paper, we suggest defining technical services themselves under the shape of components. We shall detail our proposition, by basing it on the Fractal component model of Objectweb. Then, we shall bring solutions for the use of these new component-based technical services and shall propose a set of management components which allow to administer in a dynamic and stand-alone way the obtained components. Finally we present the prototype of the proposed solution.
