Abstract:We consider the double scaling limit of a model of Pauli spin operators recently studied in Hanada et al. [1] and evaluate the moments of the Hamiltonian by the chord diagrams. We find that they coincide with those of the double scaled SYK model, which makes it more likely that this model may play an important role in the study of holography. We compare the model with another previously studied model. We also speculate on the form of the Hamiltonian in the double scaling limit.

Comments on a Paper by Narovlansky and Verlinde

Abstract:The double-scaled infinite temperature limit of the SYK model has been conjectured by Rahman and Susskind (RS) [1, 2, 3, 4], and independently by Verlinde [5] to be dual to a certain low dimensional de Sitter space. In a recent discussion of this conjecture Narovlansky and Verlinde (NV) [6] came to conclusions which radically differ from those of RS. In particular these conclusions disagree by factors which diverge as $N \to \infty$. Among these is a mismatch between the scaling of boundary entropy and bulk horizon area. In this note, we point out differences in two key assumptions made by RS and NV which lead to these mismatches, and explain why we think the RS assumptions are correct. When the NV assumptions, which we believe are unwarranted, are replaced by those of RS, the conclusions match both RS and the standard relation between entropy and area. In the process of discussing these, we will shed some light on: the various notions of temperature that appear in the duality; the relationship between Hamiltonian energy and bulk mass; and the location of bulk conical defect states in the spectrum of DSSYK$_{\infty}$.

Abstract:In a recent paper of Linde and Mukhanov, a hybrid inflationary model with nongaussian density perturbations and a ``blue'' spectral index n > 1 was presented. In this comment we point out that this model can be considered as a particular realization of the general framework for the spectrum and statistics of the CMBR we proposed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="astro-ph/9611208" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/9611208">astro-ph/9611208</a>, based on the hypothesis of conformal invariance. The implication of this hypothesis is that density perturbations are nongaussian with a spectral index n > 1.

Abstract:In the past few years, the unifying frameworks of 4-dimensional Chern-Simons theory and affine Gaudin models have allowed for the systematic construction of a large family of integrable σ -models. These models depend on the data of a Riemann surface C (here of genus 0 or 1) and of a meromorphic 1-form ω on C , which encodes the geometry of their spectral parameter and the analytic structure of their Lax connection. The main subject of this paper is the renormalisation of these theories and in particular two conjectures describing their 1-loop RG-flow in terms of the 1-form ω . These conjectures were put forward in [1] and [2] and were proven in a variety of cases. After extending the proposal of [1] to the elliptic setup (with C of genus 1), we establish the equivalence of these two conjectures and discuss some of their applications. Moreover, we check their veracity on an explicit example, namely an integrable elliptic deformation of the Principal Chiral Model on .

Abstract:We investigate a possibility of scale invariant but non-conformal supersymmetric field theories from a perturbative approach. The explicit existence of monotonically decreasing a-function that generates beta-functions as a gradient flow provides a strong obstruction for such a possibility at two-loop order. We comment on the "discovery" of scale invariant but non-conformal renormalization group trajectories via a "change of scheme" in (4-\epsilon) dimension proposed in literatures.

Abstract:We propose a scaling hypothesis for pattern-forming systems in which modulation of the order parameter results from the competition between a short-ranged interaction and a long-ranged interaction decaying with some power $\alpha$ of the inverse distance. With L being a spatial length characterizing the modulated phase, all thermodynamic quantities are predicted to scale like some power of L. The scaling dimensions with respect to L only depend on the dimensionality of the system d and the exponent \alpha. Scaling predictions are in agreement with experiments on ultra-thin ferromagnetic films and computational results. Finally, our scaling hypothesis implies that, for some range of values \alpha>d, Inverse-Symmetry-Breaking transitions may appear systematically in the considered class of frustrated systems.

Abstract:This short note is devoted to deriving scaling but hyperscaling violating solutions in a generalised Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory with an arbitrary number of scalars and vectors. We obtain analytic solutions in some special case and discuss the physical constraints on the allowed parameter range in order to have a well-defined holographic ground-state solution.

Abstract:The cold dark matter (CDM) model of structure formation, normalized on large scales, leads to excessive pairwise velocity dispersions on small scales. In an attempt to circumvent this problem, we study three scenarios (all with $\Omega=1$) which have more large-scale power and less small-scale power than the CDM model: 1) an admixture of cold and hot dark matter; 2) cold dark matter with a non-scale-invariant, power-law primordial power spectrum; and 3) cold dark matter with coupling of dark matter to a long-range vector field. Despite the {reduced} small-scale power, when such models are evolved in the nonlinear regime to large amplitude, the velocities on small scales are actually {\it increased} over CDM with the same value of $\sigma_8$. This `flip-over', in disagreement with the expectation from linear perturbation theory, arises from the nonlinear coupling of the extra power on large scales with shorter wavelengths. However, due to the extra large-scale power, the recent COBE DMR results indicate smaller amplitudes for these models, $\sigma_8 \sim 0.5 - 0.7$, than for CDM (for which $\sigma_8 \sim 1.2$). Therefore, when normalized to COBE on large scales, such models do lead to reduced velocities on small scales and they produce fewer halos compared with CDM. Quantitatively it seems, however, that models that produce sufficiently low small-scale velocities fail to produce an adequate distribution of halos.
A Cordial Introduction to Double Scaled SYK

Abstract:We review recent progress regarding the double scaled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and other $p$-local quantum mechanical random Hamiltonians. These models exhibit an expansion using chord diagrams, which can be solved by combinatorial methods. We describe exact results in these models, including their spectrum, correlation functions, and Lyapunov exponent. In a certain limit, these techniques manifest the relation to the Schwarzian quantum mechanics, a theory of quantum gravity in $AdS_2$. More generally, the theory is controlled by a rigid algebraic structure of a quantum group, suggesting a theory of quantum gravity on non-commutative $q$-deformed $AdS_2$. We conclude with discussion of related universality classes, and survey some of the current research directions.

Spectral methods for limit theorems for random expanding transformations

Abstract:We extend the spectral method for proving limit theorems to random non-uniformly expanding dynamical systems. This yields the CLT and moderate deviations principles (MDP). We show that as the amount of non-uniformity decreases the CLT rates and the speed in the MDP become closer to the optimal ones. For smooth systems the rates are effective. Compared to recent progress on the subject [34] we are able to consider much more general maps, Gibbs measures and observables. However, our main results are new even in the setup of [34].

Spectral Flow for the Riemann zeros

Abstract:Recently, with Mussardo we defined a quantum mechanical problem of a single particle scattering with impurities wherein the quantized energy levels $E_n (\sigma)$ are exactly equal to the zeros of the Riemann $\zeta (s)$ where $\sigma = \Re (s)$ in the limit $\sigma \to 1/2$. The S-matrix is based on the Euler product and is unitary by construction, thus the underlying hamiltonian is hermitian and all eigenvalues must be real. Motivated by the Hilbert-Pólya idea we study the spectral flows for $\{ E_n (\sigma) \}$. This leads to a simple criterion for the validity of the Riemann Hypothesis. The spectral flow arguments are simple enough that we present analogous results for the Generalized and Grand Riemann Hypotheses. We also illustrate our results for a counter example where the Riemann Hypothesis is violated since there is no underlying unitary S-matrix due to the lack of an Euler product.

Abstract:We present a spectral analysis for matrix scaling and operator scaling. We prove that if the input matrix or operator has a spectral gap, then a natural gradient flow has linear convergence. This implies that a simple gradient descent algorithm also has linear convergence under the same assumption. The spectral gap condition for operator scaling is closely related to the notion of quantum expander studied in quantum information theory. The spectral analysis also provides bounds on some important quantities of the scaling problems, such as the condition number of the scaling solution and the capacity of the matrix and operator. These bounds can be used in various applications of scaling problems, including matrix scaling on expander graphs, permanent lower bounds on random matrices, the Paulsen problem on random frames, and Brascamp-Lieb constants on random operators. In some applications, the inputs of interest satisfy the spectral condition and we prove significantly stronger bounds than the worst case bounds.

Perspectives on scaling and multiscaling in passive scalar turbulence

Abstract:We revisit the well-known problem of multiscaling in substances passively advected by homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flows or passive scalar turbulence. To that end we propose a two-parameter continuum hydrodynamic model for an advected substance concentration $\theta$, parametrised jointly by $y$ and $\overline y$, that characterise the spatial scaling behaviour of the variances of the advecting stochastic velocity and the stochastic additive driving force, respectively. We analyse it within a one-loop dynamic renormalisation group method to calculate the multiscaling exponents of the equal-time structure functions of $\theta$. We show how the interplay between the advective velocity and the additive force may lead to simple scaling or multiscaling. In one limit, our results reduce to the well-known results from the Kraichnan model for passive scalar. Our framework of analysis should be of help for analytical approaches for the still intractable problem of fluid turbulence itself.

Abstract:The nonlinear Schroedinger model is a prototypical dispersive wave equation that features finite time blowup, either for supercritical exponents (for fixed dimension) or for supercritical dimensions (for fixed nonlinearity exponent). Upon identifying the self-similar solutions in the so-called "co-exploding frame", a dynamical systems analysis of their stability is natural, yet is complicated by the mixed Hamiltonian-dissipative character of the relevant frame. In the present work, we study the spectral picture of the relevant linearized problem. We examine the point spectrum of 3 eigenvalue pairs associated with translation, $U(1)$ and conformal invariances, as well as the continuous spectrum. We find that two eigenvalues become positive, yet are attributed to symmetries and are thus not associated with instabilities. In addition to a vanishing eigenvalue, 3 more are found to be negative and real, while the continuous spectrum is nearly vertical and on the left-half (spectral) plane. Finally, the subtle effects of the boundaries are also assessed and their role in the observed weak eigenvalue oscillations is clarified.
