Abstract:Linear functions of many independent random variables lead to classical noises (white, Poisson, and their combinations) in the scaling limit. Some singular stochastic flows and some models of oriented percolation involve very nonlinear functions and lead to nonclassical noises. Two examples are examined, Warren's `noise made by a Poisson snake' and the author's `Brownian web as a black noise'. Classical noises are stable, nonclassical are not. A new framework for the scaling limit is proposed. Old and new results are presented about noises, stability, and spectral measures.

Abstract:We made an extensive study of the light hadron spectrum using the Wilson gauge action and Kogut-Susskind quarks. Using both dynamical quarks and the quenched approximation, we determine hadron masses for five and four gauge couplings respectively, with at least five quark masses at each coupling. In the continuum limit, we find a significant difference between two flavors of dynamical quarks and the quenched approximation for a range of quark masses.

Abstract:We prove well-posedness results for stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equations with linear multiplicative Wiener noise, including the nonconservative case. Our approach is different from the standard literature on stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equations. By a rescaling transformation we reduce the stochastic equation to a random nonlinear Schrödinger equation with lower-order terms and treat the resulting equation by a fixed point argument based on generalizations of Strichartz estimates proved by Marzuola et al. (J Funct Anal 255(6):1479–1553, 2008). This approach makes it possible to improve earlier well-posedness results obtained in the conservative case by a direct approach to the stochastic Schrödinger equation. In contrast to the latter, we obtain well-posedness in the full range $[1, 1 + 4/d)$ of admissible exponents in the nonlinear part (where $d$ is the dimension of the underlying Euclidean space), i.e., in exactly the same range as in the deterministic case.

Abstract:Consider the random Schrödinger operator $H_n$ defined on $\{0,1,\cdots,n\}\subset\mathbb{Z}$ $$ (H_n\psi)_\ell=\psi_{\ell-1,n}+\psi_{\ell+1,n}+\sigma\frac{\omega_\ell}{a_{\ell,n}}\psi_{\ell,n},\quad \psi_0=\psi_{n+1}=0, $$ where $\sigma>0$, $\omega_\ell$ are i.i.d. random variables and $a_{\ell,n}$ typically has order $\sqrt{n}$ for $\ell\in[\epsilon n,(1-\epsilon)n]$ and any $\epsilon>0$. Two important cases: the vanishing case $a_{\ell,n}=\sqrt{n}$ and the decaying case $a_{\ell,n}=\sqrt{\ell}$ were studied before in \cite{kritchevski2011scaling}. In this paper we consider more general decaying profiles that lie in between these two extreme cases. We characterize the scaling limit of transfer matrices and determine the point process limit of eigenvalues near a fixed energy in the bulk, in terms of solutions to coupled SDEs. We obtain new point processes that share similar properties to the $\text{Sech}_\tau$ process. We determine the shape profile of eigenfunctions after a suitable re-scaling, that correspond to a uniformly chosen eigenvalue of $H_n$. We also give more description of the new point processes we just defined, including the probability of small and large gaps and a variance estimate.

Abstract:One of the most celebrated findings in complex systems in the last decade is that different indexes y (e.g., patents) scale nonlinearly with the population~x of the cities in which they appear, i.e., $y\sim x^\beta, \beta \neq 1$. More recently, the generality of this finding has been questioned in studies using new databases and different definitions of city boundaries. In this paper we investigate the existence of nonlinear scaling using a probabilistic framework in which fluctuations are accounted explicitly. In particular, we show that this allows not only to (a) estimate $\beta$ and confidence intervals, but also to (b) quantify the evidence in favor of $\beta \neq 1$ and (c) test the hypothesis that the observations are compatible with the nonlinear scaling. We employ this framework to compare $5$ different models to $15$ different datasets and we find that the answers to points (a)-(c) crucially depend on the fluctuations contained in the data, on how they are modeled, and on the fact that the city sizes are heavy-tailed distributed.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is twofold. The first is to study the asymptotics of a parabolically scaled, continuous and space-time stationary in time version of the well-known Funaki-Spohn model in Statistical Physics. After a change of unknowns requiring the existence of a space-time stationary eternal solution of a stochastically perturbed heat equation, the problem transforms to the qualitative homogenization of a uniformly elliptic, space-time stationary, divergence form, nonlinear partial differential equation, the study of which is the second aim of the paper. An important step is the construction of correctors with the appropriate behavior at infinity.

Abstract:In this article, we establish a probabilistic representation for the second-order moment of the solution of stochastic heat equation in $[0,1] \times \bR^d$, with multiplicative noise, which is fractional in time and colored in space. This representation is similar to the one given in Dalang, Mueller and Tribe (2008) in the case of an s.p.d.e. driven by a Gaussian noise, which is white in time. Unlike the formula of Dalang, Mueller and Tribe (2008), which is based on the usual Poisson process, our representation is based on the planar Poisson process, due to the fractional component of the noise.

Abstract:The anomalous scaling of factorial moments with continuously diminishing scale is studied using a random cascading model. It is shown that the model currently used have the property of anomalous scaling only for descrete values of elementary cell size. A revised model is proposed which can give good scaling property also for continuously varying scale. It turns out that the strip integral has good scaling property provided the integral regions are chosen correctly, and that this property is insensitive to the concrete way of self-similar subdivision of phase space in the models.

Abstract:We revisit the well-known problem of multiscaling in substances passively advected by homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flows or passive scalar turbulence. To that end we propose a two-parameter continuum hydrodynamic model for an advected substance concentration $\theta$, parametrised jointly by $y$ and $\overline y$, that characterise the spatial scaling behaviour of the variances of the advecting stochastic velocity and the stochastic additive driving force, respectively. We analyse it within a one-loop dynamic renormalisation group method to calculate the multiscaling exponents of the equal-time structure functions of $\theta$. We show how the interplay between the advective velocity and the additive force may lead to simple scaling or multiscaling. In one limit, our results reduce to the well-known results from the Kraichnan model for passive scalar. Our framework of analysis should be of help for analytical approaches for the still intractable problem of fluid turbulence itself.

Abstract:Modeling real-world problems with partial differential equations (PDEs) is a prominent topic in scientific machine learning. Classic solvers for this task continue to play a central role, e.g. to generate training data for deep learning analogues. Any such numerical solution is subject to multiple sources of uncertainty, both from limited computational resources and limited data (including unknown parameters). Gaussian process analogues to classic PDE simulation methods have recently emerged as a framework to construct fully probabilistic estimates of all these types of uncertainty. So far, much of this work focused on theoretical foundations, and as such is not particularly data efficient or scalable. Here we propose a framework combining a discretization scheme based on the popular Finite Volume Method with complementary numerical linear algebra techniques. Practical experiments, including a spatiotemporal tsunami simulation, demonstrate substantially improved scaling behavior of this approach over previous collocation-based techniques.

Abstract:This work is concerned with the construction of statistical surrogates for concurrent multiscale modeling in structures comprising nonlinear random materials. The development of surrogates approximating a homogenization operator is a fairly classical topic that has been addressed through various methods, including polynomial- and deep-learning-based models. Such approaches, and their extensions to probabilistic settings, remain expensive and hard to deploy when the nonlinear upscaled quantities of interest exhibit large statistical variations (in the case of non-separated scales, for instance) and potential non-locality. The aim of this paper is to present a methodology that addresses this particular setting from the point of view of probabilistic learning. More specifically, we formulate the approximation problem using conditional statistics, and use probabilistic learning on manifolds to draw samples of the nonlinear constitutive model at mesoscale. Two applications, relevant to inverse problem solving and forward propagation, are presented in the context of nonlinear elasticity. We show that the framework enables accurate predictions (in probability law), despite the small amount of training data and the very high levels of nonlinearity and stochasticity in the considered system.

Abstract:Extending Kolmogorov's refined similarity hypothesis to study the inertial behavior [[T(x+r,t) -T(x,t)](2n)]proportional to r(zeta 2n) of a passive scalar T(x, t) advected by a rapidly changing incompressible velocity field, a random variable theta was introduced by Ching [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 3644 (1997)]. In this paper, the statistical distribution of the random variable X= theta/root[theta (2)] is investigated analytically for the scaling in two limits; n-independent scaling zeta (2n)=zeta (2) and regular scaling zeta (2n)=n zeta (2), and numerically for the scaling of the Kraichnan conjecture zeta (2n)=1/2 [root 4nd zeta (2)+(d-zeta (2))(2)- (d-zeta (2))]. For n-independent scaling zeta (2n) = zeta (2), the statistical distribution of X tends to an exponential distribution when zeta (2)-->0 or d-->infinity and to a Gaussian distribution when 52 -->2 and d=2. For regular scaling zeta (2n)=n zeta (2), the statistical distribution of X tends to a Gaussian distribution when zeta (2)-->0 or d-->infinity. In d=2, there seems to be a phase transition for the probability density function P(X) from a convex to a concave function when the value of 52 is increased and the critical point is zeta (2)=4/3 where the random variable X has a uniform distribution in [-root3, root3]. In d=3, P(X) is a convex function for all 0<(2)<2 and tends to a constant on its support [-3, root3] when zeta (2)-->2. For the scaling of the Kraichnan conjecture, P(X) has two peaks in d=2 for zeta (2)>1.33, but, in d=3, it has only one peak for all 0<2<2 and changes very slowly with the value of X in the neighborhood of X=O as (2)-->2.

Abstract:In delocalized systems, particle number fluctuations, also known as quantum surface roughness, and the mean-square displacement exhibit a temporal power-law growth followed by a saturation to a system-size-dependent value. We use simple scaling arguments to show that these quantities satisfy the Family-Vicsek scaling law and derive a dynamic scaling relation between the dynamical exponents, assuming that the saturation times of both quantities scale similarly with the system size. This relation clarifies the mechanism behind quantum surface roughness growth and suggests that diffusive quantum many-body systems belong to the Edwards-Wilkinson universality class. Moreover, it provides a convenient way to assess quantum transport in cold-atom experiments. We numerically verify our results by studying two non-interacting models and one interacting model having regimes with distinct dynamical exponents.

Abstract:We use Monte Carlo simulations to demonstrate generic scaling aspects of classical phase transitions approached through a quench (or annealing) protocol where the temperature changes as a function of time with velocity $v$. Using a generalized Kibble-Zurek ansatz, we demonstrate dynamic scaling for different types of stochastic dynamics (Metropolis, Swendsen-Wang, and Wolff) on Ising models in two and higher dimensions. We show that there are dual scaling functions governing the dynamic scaling, which together describe the scaling behavior in the entire velocity range $v \in [0, \infty)$. These functions have asymptotics corresponding to the adiabatic and diabatic limit, and close to these limits they are perturbative in $v$ and $1/v$, respectively. Away from their perturbative domains, both functions cross over into the same universal power-law scaling form governed by the static and dynamic critical exponents (as well as an exponent characterizing the quench protocol). As a by-product of the scaling studies, we obtain high-precision estimates of the dynamic exponent $z$ for the two-dimensional Ising model subject to the three variants of Monte Carlo dynamics; for single-spin Metropolis updates $z_M=2.1767(5)$, for Swendsen-Wang multi-cluster updates $z_{\rm SW}=0.297(3)$, and for Wolff single-cluster updates $z_{W}=0.30(2)$. For Wolff dynamics, we find an interesting behavior with a non-analytic break-down of the quasi-adiabatic and diabatic scaling, instead of the generic smooth cross-over described by a power law. We interpret this disconnect between the two scaling regimes as a dynamic phase transition of the Wolff algorithm, caused by an effective sudden loss of ergodicity at high velocity.

Abstract:Recently, a novel framework to handle stochastic processes has emerged from a series of studies in biology, showing situations beyond 'It\^o versus Stratonovich'. Its internal consistency can be demonstrated via the zero mass limit of a generalized Klein-Kramers equation. Moreover, the connection to other integrations becomes evident: the obtained Fokker-Planck equation defines a new type of stochastic calculus that in general differs from the {\alpha}-type interpretation. A unique advantage of this new approach is a natural correspondence between stochastic and deterministic dynamics, which is useful or may even be essential in practice. The core of the framework is a transformation from the usual Langevin equation to a form that contains a potential function with two additional dynamical matrices, which reveals an underlying symplectic structure. The framework has a direct physical meaning and a straightforward experimental realization. A recent experiment has offered a first empirical validation of this new stochastic integration.

Abstract:We propose to compute physical properties by Monte Carlo calculations using conditional expectation values. The latter are obtained on top of the usual Monte Carlo sampling by partitioning the physical space in several subspaces or fragments, and subsampling each fragment (i.e., performing side walks) while freezing the environment. No bias is introduced and a zero-variance principle holds in the limit of separability, i.e. when the fragments are independent. In practice, the usual bottleneck of Monte Carlo calculations -- the scaling of the statistical fluctuations as a function of the number of particles N -- is relieved for extensive observables. We illustrate the method in variational Monte Carlo on the 2D Hubbard model and on metallic hydrogen chains using Jastrow-Slater wave functions. A factor O(N) is gained in numerical efficiency.

A Scaling Approach to Stochastic Chemical Reaction Networks

Abstract:We investigate the asymptotic properties of Markov processes associated to stochastic chemical reaction networks (CRNs) driven by the kinetics of the law of mass action. Their transition rates exhibit a polynomial dependence on the state variable, with possible discontinuities of the dynamics along the boundary of the state space. We investigate the scaling properties of these networks when the norm of the initial state is converging to infinity and the reaction rates are fixed. This scaling approach is used to have insight on the time evolution of these networks when they start from a ``large'' initial state. The main difference with the scalings of the literature is that it does not change neither the graph structure of the CRN, nor its reaction rates. Several simple and interesting examples of CRNs are investigated with this scaling approach, including the detailed analysis of a CRN with several unsual asymptotic properties in the last section. We also show that a stability criterion due to Filonov for positive recurrence of Markov processes may simplify significantly the stability analysis of these networks.
