Abstract:Quantum speed limits (QSLs) impose fundamental constraints on the evolutionspeed of quantum systems. Traditionally, the Mandelstam-Tamm (MT) andMargolus-Levitin (ML) bounds have been widely employed, relying on the standarddeviation and mean of energy distribution to define the QSLs. However, theseuniversal bounds only offer loose restrictions on the quantum evolution. Herewe introduce the generalized ML bounds, which prove to be more stringent inconstraining dynamic evolution, by utilizing moments of energy spectra ofarbitrary orders, even noninteger orders. To validate our findings, we conductexperiments in a superconducting circuit, where we have the capability toprepare a wide range of quantum photonic states and rigorously test thesebounds by measuring the evolution of the system and its photon statistics usingquantum state tomography. While, in general, the MT bound is effective forshort-time evolution, we identify specific parameter regimes where either theMT or the generalized ML bounds suffice to constrain the entire evolution. Ourfindings not only establish new criteria for estimating QSLs but alsosubstantially enhance our comprehension of the dynamic evolution of quantumsystems.

Abstract:A revised version of the massively parallel simulator of a universal quantum computer, described in this journal eleven years ago, is used to benchmark various gate-based quantum algorithms on some of the most powerful supercomputers that exist today. Adaptive encoding of the wave function reduces the memory requirement by a factor of eight, making it possible to simulate universal quantum computers with up to 48 qubits on the Sunway TaihuLight and on the K computer. The simulator exhibits close-to-ideal weak-scaling behavior on the Sunway TaihuLight,on the K computer, on an IBM Blue Gene/Q, and on Intel Xeon based clusters, implying that the combination of parallelization and hardware can track the exponential scaling due to the increasing number of qubits. Results of executing simple quantum circuits and Shor's factorization algorithm on quantum computers containing up to 48 qubits are presented.

Abstract:The rapid development of quantum computers has enabled demonstrations of quantum advantages on various tasks. However, real quantum systems are always dissipative due to their inevitable interaction with the environment, and the resulting non-unitary dynamics make quantum simulation challenging with only unitary quantum gates. In this work, we present an innovative and scalable method to simulate open quantum systems using quantum computers. We define an adjoint density matrix as a counterpart of the true density matrix, which reduces to a mixed-unitary quantum channel and thus can be effectively sampled using quantum computers. This method has several benefits, including no need for auxiliary qubits and noteworthy scalability. Moreover, accurate long-time simulation can also be achieved as the adjoint density matrix and the true dissipated one converge to the same state. Finally, we present deployments of this theory in the dissipative quantum $XY$ model for the evolution of correlation and entropy with short-time dynamics and the disordered Heisenberg model for many-body localization with long-time dynamics. This work promotes the study of real-world many-body dynamics with quantum computers, highlighting the potential to demonstrate practical quantum advantages.

Toward a Universal Quantum Computer

Abstract:According to Deutsch, a universal quantum Turing machine (UQTM) is able to perform, in repeating a fixed unitary transformation on the total system, an arbitrary unitary transformation on an arbitrary data state, by including a program as another part of the input state. We note that if such a UQTM really exists, with the program state dependent on the data state, and if the prescribed halting scheme is indeed valid, then there would be no entanglement between the halt qubit and other qubits, as pointed out by Myers. If, however, the program is required to be independent of the data, the concerned entanglement appears, and is problematic no matter whether the halt qubit is monitored or not. We also note that for a deterministic programmable quantum gate array, as discussed by Nielson and Chuang, if the program is allowed to depend on the data state, then its existence has not been ruled out. On the other hand, if UQTM exists, it can be simulated by repeating the operation of a fixed gate array. However, more importantly, we observe that it is actually still open whether Deutsch's UQTM exists and whether a crucial concatenation scheme, of which the halting scheme is a special case, is valid.
Universal imaginary-time critical dynamics on a quantum computer

Abstract:Quantum computers promise a highly efficient approach to investigate quantum phase transitions, which describe abrupt changes between different ground states of many-body systems. At quantum critical points, the divergent correlation length and entanglement entropy render the ground state preparation difficult. In this work, we explore the imaginary-time evolution for probing the universal critical behavior as the universal information of the ground state can be extracted in the early-time relaxation process. We propose a systematic and scalable scheme to probe the universal behaviors via imaginary-time critical dynamics on quantum computers and demonstrate the validness of our approach by both numerical simulation and quantum hardware experiments. With the full form of the universal scaling function in terms of imaginary time, system size, and circuit depth, we successfully probe the universality by scaling analysis of the critical dynamics at an early time and with shallower quantum circuit depth. Equipped with quantum error mitigation, we also confirm the expected scaling behavior from experimental results on a superconducting quantum processor which stands as the first experimental demonstration on universal imaginary-time quantum critical dynamics.

Abstract: Quantum simulation elucidates properties of quantum many-body systems by mapping its Hamiltonian to a better-controlled system. Being less stringent than a universal quantum computer, noisy small- and intermediate-scale quantum simulators have successfully demonstrated qualitative behavior such as phase transition, localization and thermalization which are insensitive to imperfections in the engineered Hamiltonian. For more complicated features like quantum information scrambling, higher controllability will be desired to simulate both the forward and the backward time evolutions and to diagnose experimental errors, which has only been achieved for discrete gates. Here, we study the verified scrambling in a 1D spin chain by an analogue superconducting quantum simulator with the signs and values of individual driving and coupling terms fully controllable. We measure the temporal and spatial patterns of out-of-time ordered correlators (OTOC) by engineering opposite Hamiltonians on two subsystems, with the Hamiltonian mismatch and the decoherence extracted quantitatively from the scrambling dynamics. Our work demonstrates the superconducting system as a powerful quantum simulator.

Abstract:Superconducting quantum circuit is a promising system for building quantum computer. With this system we demonstrate the universal quantum computations, including the preparing of initial states, the single-qubit operations, the two-qubit universal gate operations between arbitrary qubits, the multiple pairs of two-qubit gate operations in parallel, the coupling operations on a group of qubits in parallel, the coupling operations on multiple groups of qubits in parallel, the coupling operations on multiple pairs and multiple groups of qubits in parallel. Within available technology, a universal quantum computer consists of more than 50 qubits allowing operations is achievable with the design.

Concatenated Pieceable Fault-Tolerant Scheme for Universal Quantum Computation

Abstract:As existing approaches to get around the restriction of the no-go theorem generally exhibit high ancillary qubit overhead costs, we propose a scheme for universal fault-tolerant quantum computation by using the pieceable fault-tolerant protocol and code switching techniques. In additional, by utilizing the construction of the pieceable fault-tolerant circuit, we adopt a decoding strategy based on a deep-neural-network algorithm to improve the error threshold of the non-Clifford logical gate circuit. We describe our universal construction in detail with a two-level nonuniform concatenated 25-qubit code and perform numerical simulations to analyze the depolarizing noise threshold of a given universal gate set with this code. The resources required to implement this universal gate set are also estimated to further demonstrate the efficiency of our scheme. We compare these results with the existing universal concatenation methods and conclude that our method outperforms them in terms of the lower bound of the error threshold and qubit resource overhead.
Probing entanglement dynamics and topological transitions on noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers

Abstract:We simulate quench dynamics of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain on the IBM quantum computers, calculating the Rényi entanglement entropy, the twist order parameter and the Berry phase. The latter two quantities can be deduced from a slow-twist operator defined in the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem. The Rényi entropy is obtained using a recently developed randomized measurement scheme. The twist order parameter and the Berry phase are measured without the need for additional gates or ancilla qubits. We consider quench protocols in which a trivial initial state evolves dynamically in time under the topological SSH Hamiltonian in the fully dimerized limit (the flat-band limit). During these quenches, there are persistent and periodic oscillations in the time evolution of both entanglement entropy and twist order parameter. Through the implementation of error mitigation techniques using a global depolarizing ansatz and postselection, our simulations on the IBM devices yield results that closely match exact solutions.

Abstract:Quantum computers now show the promise of surpassing any possible classical machine. However, errors limit this ability and current machines do not have the ability to implement error correcting codes due to the limited number of qubits and limited control. Therefore, dynamical decoupling (DD) and encodings that limit noise with fewer qubits are more promising. For these reasons, we put forth a model of universal quantum computation that has many advantages over strategies that require a large overhead such as the standard quantum error correcting codes. First, we separate collective noise from individual noises on physical qubits and use a decoherence-free subspace (DFS) that uses just two qubits for its encoding to eliminate collective noise. Second, our bath model is very general as it uses a spin-boson type bath but without any Markovian assumption. Third, we are able to either use a steady global magnetic field or to devise a set of DD pulses that remove much of the remaining noise and commute with the logical operations on the encoded qubit. This allows removal of noise while implementing gate operations. Numerical support is given for this hybrid protection strategy which provides an efficient approach to deal with the decoherence problems in quantum computation and is experimentally viable for several current quantum computing systems. This is emphasized by a recent experiment on superconducting qubits which shows promise for increasing the number of gates that can be implemented reliably with some realistic parameter assumptions.

Universal Quantum Channel Simulation in Duality Quantum Computing

Abstract:Quantum channels describe general transformations of the state of a physical system and play a fundamental role in many fields. It promises wide range of applications, because any physical process can be represented as a quantum channel transforming an initial state into a final state. The evolution of system undergoing a quantum channel is not necessary unitary which makes it unrealisable without ancillary system. Inspired by the method performing non-unitary operator by the linear combination of unitary operations, we proposed a quantum algorithm for the simulation of universal single-qubit channel, described by a convex combination of two generalized extreme channels corresponding to four Kraus operators, and is scalable to arbitrary higher dimension. We demonstrate the whole algorithm experimentally using the universal IBM cloud quantum computer and study properties of different qubit quantum channels. We illustrate the quantum capacity of the general qubit quantum channels, which quantifies the amount of quantum information that can be protected. There is a general agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experiments, which strongly supported our method. By realizing arbitrary qubit channel, this work provides a universal way to explore various properties of quantum channel and novel prospect of quantum communication.

Advances in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics

Abstract:We introduce the current status of quantum computing applied to the simulation of time-dependent processes in quantum systems. After a brief overview of currently existing quantum computers, the basics of quantum computing and error mitigation, and the techniques for simulating time-dependent quantum systems using quantum computers, we discuss two of our recent projects. We demonstrate the quantum computing of the strong-field dynamics of N2+ modeled as a three-level system and the quantum computing of the time-dependent dynamics of a three-site spin chain described by the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. In both cases, the simulations are carried out using a superconducting-qubit type quantum computer. Error mitigation is found to be crucial for obtaining results with an acceptable level of accuracy. We also discuss our recent comparison of the results obtained using a superconducting-qubit type quantum computer and those obtained using a trapped-ion type quantum computer.

Abstract:It is first pointed out that there is a common mathematical model for the universe and the quantum computer. The former is called the histories approach to quantum mechanics and the latter is called measurement based quantum computation. Although a rigorous concrete model for the universe has not been completed, a quantum measure and integration theory has been developed which may be useful for future progress. In this work we show that the quantum integral is the unique functional satisfying certain basic physical and mathematical principles. Since the set of paths (or trajectories) for a quantum computer is finite, this theory is easier to treat and more developed. We observe that the sum of the quantum measures of the paths is unity and the total interference vanishes. Thus, constructive interference is always balanced by an equal amount of destructive interference. As an example we consider a simplified two-slit experiment

Abstract:We develop a high-performance tensor-based simulator for random quantum circuits(RQCs) on the new Sunway supercomputer. Our major innovations include: (1) a near-optimal slicing scheme, and a path-optimization strategy that considers both complexity and compute density; (2) a three-level parallelization scheme that scales to about 42 million cores; (3) a fused permutation and multiplication design that improves the compute efficiency for a wide range of tensor contraction scenarios; and (4) a mixed-precision scheme to further improve the performance. Our simulator effectively expands the scope of simulatable RQCs to include the 10×10(qubits)X(1 + 40 + l)(depth) circuit, with a sustained performance of 1.2 Eflops (single-precision), or 4.4 Eflops (mixed-precision)as a new milestone for classical simulation of quantum circuits; and reduces the simulation sampling time of Google Sycamore to 304 seconds, from the previously claimed 10,000 years.

Abstract:Time evolution of quantum systems is of interest in physics, in chemistry, and, more recently, in computer science. Quantum computers are suggested as one route to propagating quantum systems far more efficiently than ordinary numerical methods. In the past few years, researchers have actively been improving quantum simulation algorithms, especially those in second quantization. This work continues to advance the state-of-the-art by unifying several diverging approaches under a common framework. In particular, it highlights the similarities and differences of the first and second quantized algorithms which are usually presented in a distinct fashion. By combining aspects of the two approaches, this work moves towards an online second quantized algorithm operating within a single-Fock space. This paper also unifies a host of approaches to algorithmic quantum measurement by removing superficial differences. The aim of the effort is not only to give a high-level understanding of quantum simulation, but to move towards experimentally realizable algorithms with practical applications in chemistry and beyond.

Abstract:The state transfer of closed quantum systems in the interaction picture is studied. The convergent problem encountered in designing control laws based on the Lyapunov method is solved by the well constructed observable operator and a path programming control strategy. It is proved that the condition for the target state being a stable point in the Lyapunov's sense is the coherent vectors of the observable operator and the target state must be in opposite directions. For the local optimisation limitation of the Lyapunov-based method, the path programming control strategy is proposed, which is used to change the distribution of stationary points or choose a transition path by appropriately selecting intermediate target states. Comparative numerical system simulation experiments are implemented on a four-level quantum system and the experimental results are analysed.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the synchronization of dissipative quantum harmonic oscillators in the framework of quantum open system via the Active-Passive Decomposition (APD) configuration. We show that two or more quantum systems may be synchronized when the quantum systems of interest are embedded in dissipative environments and influenced by a common classical system. Such a classical system is typically termed as a controller, which (1) can drive quantum systems to cross different regimes (e.g., from periodic to chaotic motions) and (2) constructs the so-called Active-Passive Decomposition configuration such that all the quantum objects under consideration may be synchronized. The main findings of this paper is that we demonstrate that the complete synchronizations measured by the standard quantum deviation may be achieved for both stable regimes (quantum limit circles) and unstable regimes (quantum chaotic motions). As an example, we numerically show in an optomechanical setup that the complete synchronization can be realized in quantum mechanical resonators.
