Abstract:Along with the rapid development of quantum information technologies, quantum networks that transmit quantum states have gradually shifted from laboratory to reality. However, the high cost of building a quantum network testbed seriously hinders the research progress of quantum networks, and the existing simulators have been developed with less exposure to network models. To overcome those deficiencies, this article proposes a new discrete-event driven network-layer simulation framework named SimQN, available at https://github.com/ertuil/SimQN, to provide full functionalities of the quantum networking simulation. The design goal of SimQN is to make it easy-to-configure while providing high performance and accurate simulation capability. We present multiple simulation physical backends to enable different functionalities and reduce computational overhead. The modularized SimQN also provides reusable network protocols and utilities to release the large-scale quantum networking evaluation burden. We present several demonstrations and analyses to illustrate the protocol design and the performance of SimQN.

UniQ: a Unified Programming Model for Efficient Quantum Circuit Simulation

Abstract:Quantum circuit simulation is critical for verifying quantum computers. Given exponential complexity in the simulation, existing simulators use different architectures to accelerate the simulation. However, due to the variety of both simulation methods and modern architectures, it is challenging to design a high-performance yet portable simulator. In this work, we propose UniQ, a unified programming model for multiple simulation methods on various hardware architectures. We provide a unified application abstraction to describe different applications, and a unified hierarchical hardware abstraction upon different hardware. Based on these abstractions, UniQ can perform various circuit transformations without being aware of either concrete application or architecture detail, and generate high-performance execution schedules on different platforms without much human effort. Evaluations on CPU, GPU, and Sunway platforms show that UniQ can accelerate quantum circuit simulation by up to 28.59 × (4.47 × on average) over state-of-the-art frameworks, and successfully scale to 399,360 cores on 1,024 nodes.
Distributed Simulation of Statevectors and Density Matrices

Abstract:Classical simulation of quantum computers is an irreplaceable step in the design of quantum algorithms. Exponential simulation costs demand the use of high-performance computing techniques, and in particular distribution, whereby the quantum state description is partitioned between a network of cooperating computers - necessary for the exact simulation of more than approximately 30 qubits. Distributed computing is notoriously difficult, requiring bespoke algorithms dissimilar to their serial counterparts with different resource considerations, and which appear to restrict the utilities of a quantum simulator. This manuscript presents a plethora of novel algorithms for distributed full-state simulation of gates, operators, noise channels and other calculations in digital quantum computers. We show how a simple, common but seemingly restrictive distribution model actually permits a rich set of advanced facilities including Pauli gadgets, many-controlled many-target general unitaries, density matrices, general decoherence channels, and partial traces. These algorithms include asymptotically, polynomially improved simulations of exotic gates, and thorough motivations for high-performance computing techniques which will be useful for even non-distributed simulators. Our results are derived in language familiar to a quantum information theory audience, and our algorithms formalised for the scientific simulation community. We have implemented all algorithms herein presented into an isolated, minimalist C++ project, hosted open-source on Github with a permissive MIT license, and extensive testing. This manuscript aims both to significantly improve the high-performance quantum simulation tools available, and offer a thorough introduction to, and derivation of, full-state simulation techniques.

Quantum Simulation of Dissipative Energy Transfer via Noisy Quantum Computer

Abstract:In recent years, due to its formidable potential in computational theory, quantum computing has become a very popular research topic. However, the implementation of practical quantum algorithms, which hold the potential to solve real-world problems, is often hindered by the significant error rates associated with quantum gates and the limited availability of qubits. In this study, we propose a practical approach to simulate the dynamics of an open quantum system on a noisy computer, which encompasses general and valuable characteristics. Notably, our method leverages gate noises on the IBM-Q real device, enabling us to perform calculations using only two qubits. The results generated by our method performed on IBM-Q Jakarta aligned with the those calculated by hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM), which is a classical numerically-exact method, while our simulation method runs with a much better computing complexity. In the last, to deal with the increasing depth of quantum circuits when doing Trotter expansion, we introduced the transfer tensor method(TTM) to extend our short-term dynamics simulation. Based on quantum simulator, we show the extending ability of TTM, which allows us to get a longer simulation using a relatively short quantum circuits.

Abstract:The rapid development of quantum computers has enabled demonstrations of quantum advantages on various tasks. However, real quantum systems are always dissipative due to their inevitable interaction with the environment, and the resulting non-unitary dynamics make quantum simulation challenging with only unitary quantum gates. In this work, we present an innovative and scalable method to simulate open quantum systems using quantum computers. We define an adjoint density matrix as a counterpart of the true density matrix, which reduces to a mixed-unitary quantum channel and thus can be effectively sampled using quantum computers. This method has several benefits, including no need for auxiliary qubits and noteworthy scalability. Moreover, accurate long-time simulation can also be achieved as the adjoint density matrix and the true dissipated one converge to the same state. Finally, we present deployments of this theory in the dissipative quantum $XY$ model for the evolution of correlation and entropy with short-time dynamics and the disordered Heisenberg model for many-body localization with long-time dynamics. This work promotes the study of real-world many-body dynamics with quantum computers, highlighting the potential to demonstrate practical quantum advantages.

Abstract:Quantum network simulators offer the opportunity to cost-efficiently investigate potential avenues for building networks that scale with the number of users, communication distance, and application demands by simulating alternative hardware designs and control protocols. Several quantum network simulators have been recently developed with these goals in mind. As the size of the simulated networks increases, however, sequential execution becomes time-consuming. Parallel execution presents a suitable method for scalable simulations of large-scale quantum networks, but the unique attributes of quantum information create unexpected challenges. In this work, we identify requirements for parallel simulation of quantum networks and develop the first parallel discrete-event quantum network simulator by modifying the existing serial simulator SeQUeNCe. Our contributions include the design and development of a quantum state manager (QSM) that maintains shared quantum information distributed across multiple processes. We also optimize our parallel code by minimizing the overhead of the QSM and decreasing the amount of synchronization needed among processes. Using these techniques, we observe a speedup of 2 to 25 times when simulating a 1,024-node linear network topology using 2 to 128 processes. We also observe an efficiency greater than 0.5 for up to 32 processes in a linear network topology of the same size and with the same workload. We repeat this evaluation with a randomized workload on a caveman network. We also introduce several methods for partitioning networks by mapping them to different parallel simulation processes. We have released the parallel SeQUeNCe simulator as an open-source tool alongside the existing sequential version.

An Efficient Classical Algorithm for Simulating Short Time 2D Quantum Dynamics

Abstract:Efficient classical simulation of the Schrodinger equation is central to quantum mechanics, as it is crucial for exploring complex natural phenomena and understanding the fundamental distinctions between classical and quantum computation. Although simulating general quantum dynamics is BQP-complete, tensor networks allow efficient simulation of short-time evolution in 1D systems. However, extending these methods to higher dimensions becomes significantly challenging when the area law is violated. In this work, we tackle this challenge by introducing an efficient classical algorithm for simulating short-time dynamics in 2D quantum systems, utilizing cluster expansion and shallow quantum circuit simulation. Our algorithm has wide-ranging applications, including an efficient dequantization method for estimating quantum eigenvalues and eigenstates, simulating superconducting quantum computers, dequantizing quantum variational algorithms, and simulating constant-gap adiabatic quantum evolution. Our results reveal the inherent simplicity in the complexity of short-time 2D quantum dynamics and highlight the limitations of noisy intermediate-scale quantum hardware, particularly those confined to 2D topological structures. This work advances our understanding of the boundary between classical and quantum computation and the criteria for achieving quantum advantage.

Abstract:Although there have been remarkable advances in quantum computing (QC), it remains crucial to simulate quantum programs using classical large-scale parallel computing systems to validate quantum algorithms, comprehend the impact of noise, and develop resilient quantum applications. This is particularly important for bridging the gap between near-term noisy-intermediate-scale-quantum (NISQ) computing and future fault-tolerant quantum computing (FTQC). Nevertheless, current simulation methods either lack the capability to simulate noise, or simulate with excessive computational costs, or do not scale out effectively.

Abstract:Quantum computing has shown its strong potential in solving certain important problems. Due to the intrinsic limitations of current real quantum computers, quantum circuit simulation still plays an important role in both research and development of quantum computing. GPU-based quantum circuit simulation has been explored due to GPU's high computation capability. Despite previous efforts, existing quantum circuit simulation systems usually rely on a single method to improve poor data locality caused by complex quantum entanglement. However, we observe that existing simulation methods show significantly different performance for different circuit patterns. The optimal performance cannot be obtained only with any single method.
Simulating Quantum Systems with NWQ-Sim on HPC

Abstract:NWQ-Sim is a cutting-edge quantum system simulation environment designed to run on classical multi-node, multi-CPU/GPU heterogeneous HPC systems. In this work, we provide a brief overview of NWQ-Sim and its implementation in simulating quantum circuit applications, such as the transverse field Ising model. We also demonstrate how NWQ-Sim can be used to examine the effects of errors that occur on real quantum devices, using a combined device noise model. Moreover, NWQ-Sim is particularly well-suited for implementing variational quantum algorithms where circuits are dynamically generated. Therefore, we also illustrate this with the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) for the Ising model. In both cases, NWQ-Sim's performance is comparable to or better than alternative simulators. We conclude that NWQ-Sim is a useful and flexible tool for simulating quantum circuits and algorithms, with performance advantages and noise-aware simulation capabilities.

Abstract:The quantum internet is envisioned as the ultimate stage of the quantum revolution, which surpasses its classical counterpart in various aspects, such as the efficiency of data transmission, the security of network services, and the capability of information processing. Given its disruptive impact on the national security and the digital economy, a global race to build scalable quantum networks has already begun. With the joint effort of national governments, industrial participants, and research institutes, the development of quantum networks has advanced rapidly in recent years, bringing the first primitive quantum networks within reach. In this work, we aim to provide an up-to-date review of the field of quantum networks from both theoretical and experimental perspectives, contributing to a better understanding of the building blocks required for the establishment of a global quantum internet. We also introduce a newly developed quantum network toolkit to facilitate the exploration and evaluation of innovative ideas. Particularly, it provides dual quantum computing engines, supporting simulations in both the quantum circuit and measurement-based models. It also includes a compilation scheme for mapping quantum network protocols onto quantum circuits, enabling their emulations on real-world quantum hardware devices. We showcase the power of this toolkit with several featured demonstrations, including a simulation of the Micius quantum satellite experiment, a testing of a four-layer quantum network architecture with resource management, and a quantum emulation of the CHSH game. We hope this work can give a better understanding of the state-of-the-art development of quantum networks and provide the necessary tools to make further contributions along the way.

Quantum simulation of Maxwell's equations via Schrödingersation

Abstract:We present quantum algorithms for electromagnetic fields governed by Maxwell's equations. The algorithms are based on the Schrödingersation approach, which transforms any linear PDEs and ODEs with non-unitary dynamics into a system evolving under unitary dynamics, via a warped phase transformation that maps the equation into one higher dimension. In this paper, our quantum algorithms are based on either a direct approximation of Maxwell's equations combined with Yee's algorithm, or a matrix representation in terms of Riemann-Silberstein vectors combined with a spectral approach and an upwind scheme. We implement these algorithms with physical boundary conditions, including perfect conductor and impedance boundaries. We also solve Maxwell's equations for a linear inhomogeneous medium, specifically the interface problem. Several numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the validity of this approach. In addition, instead of qubits, the quantum algorithms can also be formulated in the continuous variable quantum framework, which allows the quantum simulation of Maxwell's equations in analog quantum simulation.

Abstract:The study of quantum channels is an important field and promises a wide range of applications, because any physical process can be represented as a quantum channel that transforms an initial state into a final state. Inspired by the method of performing non-unitary operators by the linear combination of unitary operations, we proposed a quantum algorithm for the simulation of the universal single-qubit channel, described by a convex combination of "quasi-extreme" channels corresponding to four Kraus operators, and is scalable to arbitrary higher dimension. We demonstrated the whole algorithm experimentally using the universal IBM cloud-based quantum computer and studied the properties of different qubit quantum channels. We illustrated the quantum capacity of the general qubit quantum channels, which quantifies the amount of quantum information that can be protected. The behavior of quantum capacity in different channels revealed which types of noise processes can support information transmission,and which types are too destructive to protect information. There was a general agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experiments, which strongly supports our method. By realizing the arbitrary qubit channel, this work provides a universallyaccepted way to explore various properties of quantum channels and novel prospect for quantum communication.

Abstract:The construction of quantum computer simulators requires advanced software which can capture the most significant characteristics of the quantum behavior and quantum states of qubits in such systems. Additionally, one needs to provide valid models for the description of the interface between classical circuitry and quantum core hardware. In this study, we model electron transport in semiconductor qubits based on an advanced CMOS technology. Starting from 3D simulations, we demonstrate an order reduction and the steps necessary to obtain ordinary differential equations on probability amplitudes in a multi-particle system. We compare numerical and semi-analytical techniques concluding this paper by examining two case studies: the electron transfer through multiple quantum dots and the construction of a Hadamard gate simulated using a numerical method to solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and the tight-binding formalism for a time-dependent Hamiltonian.
Control Flow Adaption: An Efficient Simulation Method For Noisy Quantum Networks

Abstract:Quantum network research at both the software stack and hardware implementation level has become an exciting area of quantum information science. Although demonstrations of small-scale quantum networks have emerged in the past decade, quantum communication and computation hardware remain scarce resources today. As a result, the evaluation and validation of quantum network protocols primarily rely on classical simulators rather than real quantum networks. This paper introduces a novel quantum network simulation method called control flow adaptation, which enhances standard tensor network simulations. This method enables accurate and efficient simulations of many important quantum network protocols by carefully leveraging the control flow structures of them. Furthermore, we have developed a prototype quantum network simulator, qns-3, as a module for ns-3. This new module implements the control flow adaptation technique and applies it to a wide range of protocols. All related code is open-sourced. We believe the development of the control flow adaptation method and the qns-3 simulator represents a step forward in quantum network research, offering a versatile and scalable platform for testing and verifying quantum network protocols on classical computers.

Abstract:The use and adoption of quantum computers by the wider computing community is diminished by the need to adopt new programming techniques. These techniques involve moving from a high-level language where the programmer can define and manipulate objects, to a quantum model where the programmer defines and configures the circuits at a gate level. Previous work by the authors aimed to ease this transition through the use of a software development kit (Qx86 SDK) that emulates a traditional CPU for execution on a quantum computer, but only delivered a raw capability. The current work now presents a number of new methods that extends and improves the SDK's capability. These methods include optimizing traditional logic gate emulation, multiple gate simplification methods, reducing the number of required qubits and alternative optimized techniques for many CPU instructions. A quantum machine code mapping method is described that enhances the emulation of a traditional/quantum hybrid CPU prototype. While still orders of magnitude slower than the performance of a traditional CPU in terms of arithmetic, logic and bitwise operations, execution speed is shown to be markedly improved (in some cases by more than 1,000%) and without introducing any unrealistic requirements (that is, all execution can be performed utilizing less than 32 qubits). The usefulness of the SDK has now been enhanced as a reference guide, where the programmer/researcher can contrast traditional methods versus multiple quantum methods of execution.

Abstract:We delve into the use of photonic quantum computing to simulate quantum mechanics and extend its application towards quantum field theory. We develop and prove a method that leverages this form of Continuous-Variable Quantum Computing (CVQC) to reproduce the time evolution of quantum-mechanical states under arbitrary Hamiltonians, and we demonstrate the method's remarkable efficacy with various potentials. Our method centres on constructing an evolver-state, a specially prepared quantum state that induces the desired time-evolution on the target state. This is achieved by introducing a non-Gaussian operation using a measurement-based quantum computing approach, enhanced by machine learning. Furthermore, we propose a framework in which these methods can be extended to encode field theories in CVQC without discretising the field values, thus preserving the continuous nature of the fields. This opens new avenues for quantum computing applications in quantum field theory.
