Abstract:The experimental status of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is reviewed. Measurements discussed include B0_(s)-\bar{B}0_(s) mixing and several rare B and K decays with implications for |V_td| and |V_ts|. Extraction of |V_cb| and |V_ub| from studies of semileptonic B decay is also discussed.

Abstract:We report on studies of three types of B-meson decay that can contribute to an understanding of fundamental intergenerational quark mixing, charge-conjugation--parity violation, and long-distance quantum chromodynamics. Specifically, we discuss a selection of analyses related to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters Vcb, Vub, alpha, and gamma, and the nonperturbative heavy quark effective theory quantities lambda_1 and lambda_bar. We first describe an examination of the first and second moments of the hadronic-recoil mass and charged-lepton energy spectra in inclusive b -> c l nu decays. We also report on the reconstruction, using similar experimental techniques, of the CKM-suppressed decay B -> rho l nu and the extraction of its branching fraction, Br(B0 -> rho- l+ nu) = (2.57 +- 0.29 +0.33/-0.46 +- 0.41) x 10E-4, as well as the value |Vub| = (3.25 +- 0.14 +0.21/-0.29 +- 0.55) x 10E-3, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to model dependence, respectively. Finally, we present results on rare two-body charmless hadronic B -> K pi, pi pi, and K K decays and comment briefly on their implications to the geometry of the CKM unitarity triangle, including a bound on gamma.

Abstract:In the heavy quark limit a heavy baryon which contains two heavy quarks is believed to be composed of a heavy diquark and a light quark. Based on this picture, we evaluate the weak semileptonic decay rates of such baryons. The transition form factors between two heavy baryons are associated with those between two heavy mesons by applying superflavor symmetry. The effective vertices of the W boson and two heavy diquarks are obtained in terms of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Numerical predictions on these semileptonic decay widths are presented and they will be tested in future experiments. [S0556-2821(98)00721-8].

Abstract:A brief review of the current state of observed deviations of theoretical predictions from experimental data in semileptonic decays of $B$ and $B_c$ mesons is given. A theoretical analysis of these decays is carried out, taking into account the effects of new physics, which appear due to the introduction of new four-fermion operators, which are absent in the basis of the Standard Model (SM) operators. The necessary form factors are calculated within the framework of the covariant quark model developed in our papers.

New determination of $|V_{ub}/V_{cb}|$ from $B_s^0\to \lbrace K^-, D_s^- \rbrace μ^+ν$

Abstract:We update the full set of $\bar{B}_s\rightarrow K$ form factors using light-cone sum rules with an on-shell kaon. Our approach determines the relevant sum rule parameters -- the duality thresholds -- from a Bayesian fit for the first time. Using a modified version of the Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed parametrisation, we combine our sum rule results at low momentum transfer $q^2$ with more precise lattice QCD results at large $q^2$. We obtain a consistent description of the form factors in the full $q^2$ range. Applying these results to a recent LHCb measurement of branching ratios for the decays $B_s^0 \to \lbrace K^-, D_s^-\rbrace \mu^+\nu_\mu$, we determine the ratio of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa elements $$ \notag \left|\frac{V_{ub}}{V_{cb}}\right|_{q^2<7\; \textrm{GeV}^2} = 0.0681\pm 0.0040 \quad \text{and} \quad \left|\frac{V_{ub}}{V_{cb}}\right|_{q^2>7 \;\textrm{GeV}^2} = 0.0801\pm 0.0047 \ , $$ which are mutually compatible at the $1.9\sigma$ level. We further comment on the sensitivity to Beyond the Standard Model effects through measurements of the shape of $B_s^0 \to K^- \mu^+\nu_\mu$ decays, in light of recent limits on such effects from other exclusive $b\to u\ell\nu$ processes.

Abstract:In this article, we review the current status of $B$-mixing and $b$-hadron lifetimes both from experimental and theoretical points of view. Furthermore, we discuss the phenomenological potential of these observables for deepening our understanding of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and for indirect searches for effects beyond the Standard Model (SM). In addition, we present new updated SM predictions for the mixing observables $\Delta M_{d,s}$, $\Delta \Gamma_{d,s}$ and $a_{fs}^{d,s}$. We conclude with an outlook on future prospects for theoretical and experimental improvements.

Abstract:Phases of elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix can be obtained using decays of $B$ mesons to $\pi^+ \pi^-$, $\pi^\pm K^\mp$, and $\pi^+ K^0$ or $\pi^- \overline{K}^0$. For $B^0~{\rm or}~ \overline{B}^0 \to \pi^+ \pi^-$, one identifies the flavor of the neutral $B$ meson at time of production and studies the time-dependence of the decay rate. The other processes are self-tagging and only their rates need be measured. By assuming flavor SU(3) symmetry and first-order SU(3) breaking, one can separately determine the phases $\gamma \equiv {\rm Arg}~V_{ub}^*$ and $\alpha = \pi - \beta - \gamma$, where $\beta \equiv {\rm Arg}~V_{td}^*$. Special cases include the vanishing of strong interaction phase differences between amplitudes, the possibility of recovering partial information when $\pi^+ \pi^-$ and $\pi^\pm K^\mp$ decays cannot be distinguished from one another, and the use of a correlation between $\gamma$ and $\alpha$ in the region of allowed parameters.

Abstract:$B_d$ and $B_s$ meson systems play a fundamental role to test and improve our understanding of Standard Model flavor dynamics. The mixing parameters $\Delta m_{d,s}$ represent important constraints in the unitarity triangle analysis. Their theoretical estimates require non-perturbative calculations of B-meson decay constants and B-parameters; accurate results, recently obtained from the lattice, are reviewed. Other phenomenologically interesting quantities are the beauty hadron lifetime ratios and, the width differences and CP-violation parameters in $B_d$ and $B_s$ systems. We discuss their theoretical predictions which, in the last four years, have been improved thanks to accurate lattice calculations and next-to-leading order perturbative computations.

Cabibbo angle anomalies and a global fit to vector-like quarks

Abstract:The most recent determinations of $V_{ud}$ from superallowed beta decays lead to a discrepancy when compared to the value implied by mesonic CKM measurements combined with CKM unitarity. On top of this, improved precision in lattice QCD calculations have revealed another discrepancy between the $V_{us}$ determinations from kaon and pion semi-leptonic decays. The combination of these can be referred to as the Cabibbo angle anomaly, which we find has a significance of around $3\,\sigma$. After summarising the current state of these issues, I will talk about new physics models that modify semi-leptonic decays as potential explanations, and why vector-like quarks in particular appear the most promising candidates. I will then discuss the results of a global fit to various vector-like quark models, and how other constraints are important in determining the most likely explanation. Finally I will touch on future experiments that could shed further light on the situation.

Abstract:Time-dependent CP asymmetries in $B^0$ decays from interference of $B^0$-$\bar B^0$ mixing and $b\to c\bar cs, u\bar ud, sq\bar q$, and direct asymmetries from interference of $b\to c\bar us$ and $b\to u\bar cs$ are studied, improving errors in the weak phases $\beta$ and $\gamma$ to $\pm 1^\circ$ and $\pm 7^\circ$, respectively. Two kinds of tests for New Physics are discussed: 1. Deviations of asymmetries in $b\to sq\bar q$ decays from $\sin 2\beta\sin\Delta mt$. 2. Violation of a sum rule for direct asymmetries in $B\to K\pi$.

Abstract:Neutrons study a number of hot topics from the field of particle physics and cosmology: Recent measurements of various mixed American-British-French-German-Hungarian-Japan-Russian groups of researchers determine the strength of the weak interaction of the neutron, which gives us unique information on quark-mixing and the question of unitarity. Much to our surprise, with neutron-decay we find a deviation Delta = 0.0083(28) from the unitarity condition, an effect that cannot be explained by the current Standard Model of particle physics.

Abstract:Recently, the LHCb Collaboration has observed the decays Ξb0→Ξc+Ds− and Ξb−→Ξc0Ds− . They measured the relative branching fractions times the ratio of beauty-baryon production cross sections R(Ξb0Λb)≡σ(Ξb0)σ(Λb0)×B(Ξb0→Ξc+Ds−)B(Λb0→Λc+Ds−) and R(Ξb−Λb)≡σ(Ξb−)σ(Λb0)×B(Ξb−→Ξc0Ds−)B(Λb0→Λc+Ds−) . Once the ratio σ(Ξb0)σ(Λb0) or σ(Ξb−)σ(Λb0) is known, one can determine the relative branching fractions which can be used to exam the mixing of Ξc and Ξc′ . In previous literature, Ξc and Ξc′ were assumed to belong to SU(3)F antitriple and sextet, respectively. However, recent experimental measurements, such as the ratio Γ(Ξcc→Ξcπ+)/Γ(Ξcc→Ξc′π+) , indicate the spin-flavor structures of Ξc and Ξc′ are a mixture of Ξc3 ̄ and Ξc6 . The exact value of mixing angle θ is still under debate. In theoretical models, the mixing angle was fitted to be about 16.27°±2.30° or 85.54°±2.30° based on decay channels Ξcc→Ξc(′) . While in lattice calculation, a small angle ( 1.2°±0.1° ) is preferred. To address such discrepancy and test the mixing of Ξc and Ξc′ , here we propose the analysis of semileptonic and nonleptonic decays of Ξb→Ξc and Ξb→Ξc′ . We calculate the decay rate of Ξb→Ξc and Ξb→Ξc′ based on the light-front quark model and study the effect of the mixing angle on the ratios of weak decays Ξb→Ξc and Ξb→Ξc′ . In particular, we find the transition Ξb→Ξc′ can be an ideal channel to verify the mixing and extract the mixing angle because in theory, the decay rate would be extremely tiny without mixing. Abstract:As the hint for CP violating new physics in B-> phi Ks has weakened, we reconsider the possibility of near maximal mixing between \tilde s_R-\tilde b_R squarks. Such a right-handed strange-beauty squark \widetilde{sb}_{1} can be realized by combining supersymmetry with an approximate Abelian flavor symmetry, and comes with a unique new CP violating phase from right-handed quark mixing. Naturally heavy strange-beauty squark and gluino, of order 0.5 to 1 TeV, are easily accommodated by recent time-dependent CP violation measurements in Bd -> phi K^0 and pi^0 K^0. Because of near maximal mixing, even with such heavy masses, the \widetilde{sb}_{1} and \tilde g can still strongly impact on Bs mass difference and generate CP violation in the mixing, which can still be probed at Tevatron Run II. But if the scenario is realized, the LHC will provide definitive information on the new CP phase, and possibly discover the \widetilde{sb}_{1} squark. Time-dependent CP violation in Bd -> K^{*0} gamma can be probed at the future B factory upgrades. Other b -> s decays influenced by large right-handed dynamics are also discussed.
Effect of isoscalar and isovector scalar fields on baryon semileptonic decays in nuclear matter

Abstract:The precise determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements is very important, because it could be a clue to new physics beyond Standard Theory. This is particular true of $V_{ud}$, because it is the main contribution to the unitary condition of the CKM matrix elements. The level of accuracy for the test of the unitarity involving the element $V_{ud}$ is now of the order of $10^{-4}$. Because the precise data for $V_{ud}$ is usually extracted from super-allowed nuclear $\beta$ decay, it is quite significant to investigate the breaking of SU(3) flavor symmetry on the weak vector coupling constant in nuclear matter. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the isoscalar scalar ($\sigma$) and the isovector scalar ($\delta$ or $a_0$) mean-fields affect the weak vector and axial-vector coupling constants for semileptonic baryon (neutron, $\Lambda$ or $\Xi^-$) decay in asymmetric nuclear matter. To do so, we use the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, where nuclear matter consists of nucleons including quark degrees of freedom bound by the self-consistent exchange of scalar and vector mesons. We pay careful attention to the center of mass correction to the quark currents in matter. We then find that, for neutron $\beta$ decay in asymmetric nuclear matter, the defect of the vector coupling constant due to the $\delta$ field can be of the order of $10^{-4}$ at the nuclear saturation density, which is the same amount as the level of the current uncertainty in the measurements. It is also interesting that, in neutron-rich matter, there exists a certain low density at which isospin symmetry is restored, that is, the $u$-$d$ quark mass difference vanishes. We conclude that the effect of the isoscalar scalar and the isovector scalar fields should be considered in baryon semileptonic decays in nuclei.

Abstract:Exotic multi-quark states are examined in the quark model and in QCD. Current status of theoretical studies of the pentaquark Θ+ is reported. We show recent analyses of multiquark components of baryons. A novel method to extract a compact excited state in the lattice QCD is applied. We also discuss how to determine mixings of different Fock components in the hadron in the QCD sum rule approach.

Abstract:We review the status of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and the CP-violating phases in the CKM-unitarity triangle. The emphasis in these lecture notes is on $B$-meson physics, though we also review the current status and issues in the light quark sector of this matrix. Selected applications of theoretical methods in QCD used in the interpretation of data are given and some of the issues restricting theoretical precision on the CKM matrix elements discussed. The overall consistency of the CKM theory with the available data in flavour physics is impressive and we quantify this consistency. Current data also show some anomalies which, however, are not yet statistically significant. They are discussed briefly. Some benchmark measurements that remain to be done in experiments at the $B$-factories and hadron colliders are listed. Together with the already achieved results, they will provide unprecedented tests of the CKM theory and by the same token may lead to the discovery of new physics.
