Abstract:We discuss the influence of lowest Landau level (LLL) fluctuations near H_{c2}(T) on flux lattice melting in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO). We show that the specific heat step of the flux lattice melting transition in YBCO single crystals can be attributed largely to the degrees of freedom associated with LLL fluctuations. These degrees of freedom have already been shown to account for most of the latent heat. We also show that these results are a consequence of the correspondence between flux lattice melting and the onset of LLL fluctuations.

Abstract:The underlying physics of the magnetic-field-induced resistive state in high temperature cuprate superconductors remains a mystery. One interpretation is that the application of magnetic field destroys the d-wave superconducting gap to uncover a Fermi surface that behaves like a conventional (<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://i.e.Fermi" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> Liquid) metal (1). Another view is that an applied magnetic field destroys long range superconducting phase coherence, but the superconducting gap amplitude survives (2, 3). By measuring the specific heat of ultra-clean YBa2Cu3O6.56 (YBCO 6.56), we obtain a measure of the quasi-particle density of states from the superconducting state well into the magnetic-field-induced resistive state. We have found that at very high magnetic fields the specific heat exhibits both the conventional temperature dependence and quantum oscillations expected for a Fermi Liquid. On the other hand, the magnetic field dependence of the quasi-particle density of states follows a \sqrt{H} behavior that persists right through the zero-resistance transition, evidencing the fully developed d-wave superconducting gap over the entire magnetic field range measured. The coexistence of these two phenomena pose a rigorous thermodynamic constraint on theories of high-magnetic-field resistive state in the cuprates.

Abstract:YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) is a crucial aspect of research in the field of superconducting applications, where its high anisotropy is generally undesirable in strong power transmission. However, from a dialectical perspective, a thorough investigation of material anisotropy can offer an additional degree of freedom to tune potential properties and design innovative devices. This work employed pulsed laser deposition to fabricate a high-quality YBCO thin film (Tc = 89 K) and used the Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometer (MMSE) to determine the complete dielectric tensor of the YBCO film across the ultraviolet to near-infrared spectrum (245-1000 nm), enabling a comprehensive, quantitative study of the optical anisotropy of YBCO. It provided optical constants and dielectric function spectra for different axes. We found that YBCO exhibits birefringence and dichroism both in-plane and out-of-plane. By combining standard critical point (SCP) analysis and first-principles calculations, we identified specific interband transitions related to SCP in the YBCO dielectric spectra, revealing the physical essence of anisotropic optical transitions from a quantum mechanical standpoint. Temperature-dependent studies of the transitions and optical constants were conducted. The work fills a partial void in the optical parameters of the anisotropy of YBCO and holds relevance for understanding the origins of copper-based hightemperature superconductivity.

Abstract:The Kondo lattice: a question of scale The two types of magnetic order that appear in metals have very different origins: 'itinerant-electron' magnetism occurs where a spin-density wave instability in a sea of itinerant electrons causes magnetic order, and 'local-moment' magnetism occurs where magnetic order comes from an instability in a liquid of local atomic magnetic moments. A class of strongly correlated electron materials exist, the heavy-electron intermetallic compounds such as alloys containing Ce or Yb, that bridges these two extremes, with itinerant-electron magnetism reigning at low temperature and local-moment magnetism at high temperature. It has been a long-standing goal to quantitatively describe the transition between the two and to discover what determines its temperature scale. Yang et al . now report a simple semiquantitative solution to the latter problem that provides a new framework for interpreting the physics of heavy electron materials. This offers the prospect to quantitatively determine the physical origin of some of the remarkable properties, such as their superconducting behaviour.

Abstract:Flux line lattice in type II superconductors undergoes a transition into a "disordered" phase such as vortex liquid or vortex glass, due to thermal fluctuations and random quenched disorder. We quantitatively describe the competition between the thermal fluctuations and the disorder using the Ginzburg-Landau approach. The following T-H phase diagram of YBCO emerges. There are just two distinct thermodynamical phases, the homogeneous and the crystalline one, separated by a single first order transition line. The line, however, makes a wiggle near the experimentally claimed critical point at 12 T. The "critical point" is reinterpreted as a (noncritical) Kauzmann point in which the latent heat vanishes and the line is parallel to the T axis. The magnetization, the entropy, and the specific heat discontinuities at melting compare well with experiments.

Abstract:Thymio II is a small robot developed for education. It aims at offering a wide public the possibility to understand the basics of robotics and programming. To achieve this, it aims at being appealing to a large age range and serve as a medium for several types of activities. In this study, we tested it in five different workshops of the EPFL Robotics Festival with various activities. The workshops target different age groups and the participants can control the robot via different means: built-in buttons, graphical programming and text programming. At the end of the activities, participants were asked to fill a short survey to give their impressions about the robot, their appreciation of the tasks and their motivations to take part. We could show through this feedback that Thymio II appeals to young children as much as to teenagers, to both girls and boys, and allows them to have fun and learn new things.
Dynamic Scaling and Two-Dimensional High-Tc Superconductors

Abstract:There has been ongoing debate over the critical behavior of two-dimensional superconductors; in particular for high Tc superconductors. The conventional view is that a Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition occurs as long as finite size effects do not obscure the transition. However, there have been recent suggestions that a different transition actually occurs which incorporates aspects of both the dynamic scaling theory of Fisher, Fisher, and Huse and the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Berezinskii transition. Of general interest is that this modified transition apparently has a universal dynamic critical exponent. Some have countered that this apparent universal behavior is rooted in a newly proposed finite-size scaling theory; one that also incorporates scaling and conventional two-dimensional theory. To investigate these issues we study DC voltage versus current data of a 12 angstrom thick YBCO film. We find that the newly proposed scaling theories have intrinsic flexibility that is relevant to the analysis of the experiments. In particular, the data scale according to the modified transition for arbitrarily defined critical temperatures between 0 K and 19.5 K, and the temperature range of a successful scaling collapse is related directly to the sensitivity of the measurement. This implies that the apparent universal exponent is due to the intrinsic flexibility rather than some real physical property. To address this intrinsic flexibility, we propose a criterion which would give conclusive evidence for phase transitions in two-dimensional superconductors. We conclude by reviewing results to see if our criterion is satisfied.

Abstract:Angular-dependent magnetic torque measurements performed near the critical temperature on single crystals of HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+y}, La_{2-x}Sr{x}CuO_{4}, and YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.93} are scaled, following the 3D XY model, in order to determine the scaling function dG^{\pm}(z)/dz which describes the universal critical properties near T_{c}. A systematic shift of the scaling function with increasing effective mass anisotropy \gamma = (m_{ab}*/m_{c}*)^{1/2} is observed, which may be understood in terms of a 3D-2D crossover. Further evidence for a 3D-2D crossover is found from temperature-dependent torque measurements carried out in different magnetic fields at different field orientations \delta, which show a quasi 2D "crossing region'' (M*,T*). The occurrence of this "crossing phenomenon'' is explained in a phenomenological way from the weak z dependence of the scaling function around a value z = z*. The "crossing'' temperature T* is found to be angular-dependent. Torque measurements above T_{c} reveal that fluctuations are strongly enhanced in the underdoped regime where the anisotropy is large, whereas they are less important in the overdoped regime.

Abstract:This article presents the concepts and basic premises that are necessary for a better understanding of the Brief Interventions (BIs), with a literature review of its effectiveness and a discussion about BIs in Brazil. The theoretical premises are discussed, as well the concepts represented by the acronym FRAMES: Feedback; Responsibility; Advice; Menu; Empathic and Self-efficacy. Results of systematic reviews and metanalysis about BIs effectiveness are discussed and a summary box with the main studies is presented. Finally, the recent developments about the introduction of BIs in Brazil are commented. The importance of health professionals training and the adoption of BIs within different settings are emphasized considering its demonstrated effectiveness and economic feasibility.
Magnetic Anisotropy of Quantum Critical Fluctuation in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ at High Magnetic Fields of up to 100 T

Abstract:The investigation of high-temperature superconductors under high magnetic fields is one of the most important topics in condensed matter physics. For YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO), the measurements of magnetoresistance under a high magnetic field are technically challenging because the required magnetic field ($B$) is 100 T class. The low temperature (from 52 to 150 K) magnetoresistance is measured in optimally-doped YBCO thin films under the condition $B$$\parallel$CuO$_2$-plane up to 103 T by employing the single-turn coil technique and a radio frequency reflection method. The electrical resistivity $\rho$ exhibits $B$-linear behavior in the normal phase in the high magnetic field region. The field slope coefficient $\beta$ (=$d\rho/dB$) becomes converged at low temperatures. The convergency of $\beta$ below $T_c$ indicates the field-induced strange metal phase, which is determined by the quantum critical fluctuation at high magnetic fields. The $\beta$ value difference under the different directions of the magnetic field suggests the strong anisotropy in quantum critical fluctuations in the strange metal phase of YBCO.

Abstract:Magnetization measurements as a function of temperature are reported for $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.5}$ crystal (T_{c}=45.2 K) for fields between 0.2 to $3.5\ Tesla$. All isochamps for H>1 Tesla intersect at $T_{2D}^{\star}\simeq 42.8\ K$, implying fluctuations contribution to the magnetization. These curves collapse into a single curve when magnetization and temperature are scaled according to the predicted ''2D scaling'' in the fluctuation regime. Surprisingly, the low field curves also intersect, at $T_{3D}^{\star}\simeq 43.4 K$, and they obey a 3D scaling. We provide a theoretical picture of the magnetization in the fluctuation regime based on the Lawrence-Doniach model. Within this model we calculate the field and temperature dependence of the magnetization. The two intersection points and the $2D\to 3D$ crossover are consistent with the experimental observation.

Scaling of the quasiparticle spectrum for d-wave superconductors

Abstract:In finite magnetic field H, the excitation spectrum of the low energy quasiparticles in a 2 dimensional d-wave superconductor exhibits a scaling with respect to $H^{1/2}$. This property can be used to calculate scaling relations for various physical quantities at low temperature T. As examples, we make predictions for the scaling behavior of the finite magnetic field specific heat, quasiparticle magnetic susceptibility, optical conductivity tensor, and thermal conductivity tensor. These predictions are compatible with existing experimental data. Most notably, the thermal Hall coefficient $\kappa_{xy}$ measured by Krishana et al. in YBCO is found to scale as $\kappa_{xy} \sim T^2 F(\alpha T/H^{1/2})$ for $T \lesssim 30 K$ in agreement with our predictions, where $\alpha$ is a constant and F is a scaling function.

Effects of columnar disorder on flux-lattice melting in high-temperature superconductors

Abstract:The effect of columnar pins on the flux-lines melting transition in high-temperature superconductors is studied using Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations. We highlight the similarities and differences in the effects of columnar disorder on the melting transition in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) and the highly anisotropic Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (BSCCO) at magnetic fields such that the mean separation between flux-lines is smaller than the penetration length. For pure systems, a first order transition from a flux-line solid to a liquid phase is seen as the temperature is increased. When adding columnar defects to the system, the transition temperature is not affected in both materials as long as the strength of an individual columnar defect (expressed as a flux-line defect interaction) is less than a certain threshold for a given density of randomly distributed columnar pins. This threshold strength is lower for YBCO than for BSCCO. For higher strengths the transition line is shifted for both materials towards higher temperatures, and the sharp jump in energy, characteristic of a first order transition, gives way to a smoother and gradual rise of the energy, characteristic of a second order transition. Also, when columnar defects are present, the vortex solid phase is replaced by a pinned Bose glass phase and this is manifested by a marked decrease in translational order and orientational order as measured by the appropriate structure factors. For BSCCO, we report an unusual rise of the translational order and the hexatic order just before the melting transition. No such rise is observed in YBCO.

Relationship among thermal anomalies, superconductivity and structural blocks in different-metal-site-doped YBCO

Abstract:Three series of polycrystalline samples of YBa(2)Cu(3- x)Ni(x)O(y)(YBCNO), Y(1-x)Pr(x)Ba(2)Cu(3)O(y) (YPrBCO) and YBa(2-x)La(x)Cu(3)O(y) (YBLCO) (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, respectively), synthesized by a solid state reaction technique, were characterized by thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry, DC magnetization measurement, temperature dependent x-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement. To our knowledge this is the first systematic report of two phase transitions at about 400 and 850 degrees C before melting. By careful measurements it was seen that the amounts of the percentage weight loss and the DSC changes, along with T(c), decrease with increasing dopant. Combining the theory of oxygen diffusion with the block model in YBCO, the mechanism of the phase transitions can be explained as follows: the phase transition at 400 degrees C comes directly from O(1) in the rock salt block, while the phase transition at 850 degrees C is related to the perovskite block. The calculation of the combinative energy between the two structural rock salt and perovskite blocks shows that, with increasing dopant, the higher the combinative energy the lower the T(c), and vice versa. The results indicate that there exits a triangular relationship among thermal anomalies, superconductivity and structural blocks in different-metal-site-doped YBCO, which may be significant for understanding the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity.
Electronic Specific Heat and Low-Energy Quasiparticle Excitations in the Superconducting State of La2-xSrxCuO4 Single Crystals

Abstract:Low-temperature specific heat has been measured and extensively analyzed on a series of La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals from underdoped to overdoped regime. From these data the quasiparticle density of state in the mixed state is derived and compared to the predicted scaling law C-vol/TrootH=f(T/rootH) of d-wave superconductivity. It is found that the scaling law can be nicely followed by the optimally doped sample (x = 0.15) in quite a wide region of (T/rootH less than or equal to 8K/rootT). However, the region for this scaling becomes smaller and smaller toward more underdoped region: a clear trend can be seen for samples from x=0.15 to 0.069. Therefore, generally speaking, the scaling quality becomes worse on the underdoped samples in terms of scalable region of T/rootH. This feature in the underdoped region is explained as due to the low-energy excitations from a second order ( for example, antiferromagnetic correlation, d-density wave, spin-density wave, or charge-density wave order) that may coexist or compete with superconductivity. Surprisingly, deviations from the d-wave scaling law have also been found for the overdoped sample (x=0.22), while the scaling law is reconciled for the overdoped sample, when the core size effect is taken into account. An important discovery of present work is that the zero-temperature data follow the Volovik's relation Deltagamma(T=0)=ArootH quite well for all samples investigated here; although the applicability of the d-wave scaling law to the data at finite temperatures varies with doped-hole concentration. We also present the doping dependence of some parameters, such as the residual linear term gamma(0), the alpha value, etc. It is suggested that the residual linear term (gamma(0)T) of the electronic specific heat observed in all cuprate superconductors is probably due to the inhomogeneity, either chemical or electronic in origin. The field-induced reduction of the specific heat in the mixed state is also reported. Finally, implications on the electronic phase diagram are suggested.
Synergistic interplays between the selective electron-phonon coupling, antiferromagnetic fluctuations and charge density wave in the YBa2Cu3Ox cuprate superconductor

Abstract:This research aims to investigate the synergistic effect between charge density wave, selective electron-phonon coupling under antiferromagnetic fluctuations, as well as the unusual electron distribution observed in ARPES data in YBa2Cu3Ox superconductors (YBCO). By considering their synergistic impact, our model can calculate the superconducting transition temperature Tc of YBa2Cu3Ox as a function of pressure for x = 6.5 and 7 at a reasonable level. Moreover, we have identified a specific antiferromagnetic phonon that contributes significantly to the high Tc observed in YBCO. This finding highlights the significance of these effects in achieving high Tc values. Our study not only identifies an imbalanced charge-density wave effect for triggering selective electron-phonon coupling but also explains why the charge density wave usually occurs around the magnetic copper atoms. Furthermore, our research reveals limitations in the conventional mean-field ab-initio approximation used for antiferromagnetic fluctuations in YBCO. It shows that the dynamic behavior of electrons in YBCO might not be accurately captured by this approximation, as non-uniform magnetic fields under antiferromagnetic fluctuations induce an additional electric potential on electrons across the boundary between non-magnetic to magnetic sites instantaneously. This instantaneous electric potential, in turn, suggest that the influence of the antiferromagnetic phonon-based pairing mechanism might not have been optimized in theory

Abstract:Recent developments in high-temperature superconductivity highlight a generic tendency of the cuprates to develop competing electronic (charge) supermodulations. While coupled with the lattice and showing different characteristics in different materials, these supermodulations themselves are generally conceived to be quasi-two-dimensional, residing mainly in individual CuO2 planes, and poorly correlated along the c axis. Here we observed with resonant elastic X-ray scattering a distinct type of electronic supermodulation in YBa2Cu3O7 (- x) (YBCO) thin films grown epitaxially on La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO). This supermodulation has a periodicity nearly commensurate with four lattice constants in-plane, eight out of plane, with long correlation lengths in three dimensions. It sets in far above the superconducting transition temperature and competes with superconductivity below this temperature for electronic states predominantly in the CuO2 plane. Our finding sheds light on the nature of charge ordering in cuprates as well as a reported long-range proximity effect between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in YBCO/LCMO heterostructures.
Reversible and irreversible magnetocaloric effect in the NdBa_2Cu_3O_7 superconductor in relation with specific heat and magnetization

Abstract:A recently developed technique for measuring the isothermal magnetocaloric coefficient ($M_T$) is applied to the study of a superconducting NdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ single crystal. Results are compared with magnetization ($M$) and specific heat ($C$). In the reversible region both $C$ and $M_T$ follow the scaling law of the 3D-xy universality class. The anomalies connected with flux-line lattice melting are visible on $M_T(B)$ curves as peaks and steps, similar to $C(T)$ curves yet with much smaller background. At lower temperature, in the irreversible region the $M_T(B)$ behaviour resembles more that of $M(B)$, exhibiting the "fishtail" effect. Our results confirm that the peculiarities of the phase diagram known from the high temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$, e.g. vortex melting, dominance of critical fluctuations and absence of a $B_{c2}$ critical field line, are a common property of RE-123 systems.

Thermoelectric Properties of YBa2Cu3O7-(La,Ca)MnO3 Superlattices

Abstract:We report measurements of the thermoelectric power and electrical resistivity of superlattices composed of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (YBCO) and the metallic ferromagnet La(2/3)Ca(1/3)MnO3 (LCMO) with individual layer thicknesses between 5 and 50 nm. Whereas YBCO and LCMO reference films prepared under the same conditions exhibit negative Seebeck coefficients, in excellent agreement with data on bulk compounds of identical composition, those of all superlattices are positive, regardless of the individual layer thickness. Having ruled out lattice strain and incomplete oxygenation, we attribute the observed sign reversal of the Seebeck coefficient to a long-range electronic reconstruction nucleated at the YBCO-LCMO interfaces.

Abstract:A metastable homogeneous state exists down to zero temperature in systems of repelling vortices. A zero- "fluctuation-temperature" liquid state therefore serves as a (pseudo) "fixed point" controlling the properties of vortex liquid below and even around melting point. Based on this picture for the vortex phase we apply the Borel-Pade resummation technique to develop a quantitative theory of the vortex liquid for the lowest-Landau-level Ginzburg-Landau model in type-II superconductors. While on the solid phase, there exists a superheat solid phase which ends at the spinodal line. The picture for the vortex phase is supported by an exactly solvable large N Ginzburg-Landau model in a magnetic field and has been recently confirmed by the experiments. The applicability of the lowest-Landau-level model is discussed and corrections due to higher levels are calculated. The melting line is located based on the quantitative theory for the description of the vortex solid and the vortex liquid. Magnetization, entropy, and specific heat jumps along the melting line are calculated. The theoretical results explain quantitatively very well the experimental data on the high-T-c cuprates YBa2Cu3O7, DyBCO, low-T-c material (K, Ba) BiO3, and also Monte Carlo simulation results.
