Abstract:Alternating bilinear maps with few relations allow to define a combinatorial closure similarly as in [2]. For the $\aleph_0$-categorical case we show that this closure is part of the algebraic closure.

Abstract:The Baire algebra of a topological space $X$ is the quotient of the algebra of all subsets of $X$ modulo the meager sets. We show that this Boolean algebra can be endowed with a natural closure operator, resulting in a closure algebra which we denote ${\bf Baire}(X)$. We identify the modal logic of such algebras to be the well-known system $\sf S5$, and prove soundness and strong completeness for the cases where $X$ is crowded and either completely metrizable and continuum-sized or locally compact Hausdorff. We also show that every extension of $\sf S5$ is the modal logic of a subalgebra of ${\bf Baire}(X)$, and that soundness and strong completeness also holds in the language with the universal modality.

A Homological View of Categorical Algebra

Abstract:We provide a foundation for working with homological and homotopical methods in categorical algebra. This involves two mutually complementary components, namely (a) the strategic selection of suitable axiomatic frameworks, some well known and some new, and (b) the development of categorical tools for effective reasoning and computing within those frameworks. The selection of axiomatic frameworks begins `from the ground up' with z-exact categories. These are pointed categories in which every morphism has a kernel and cokernel. Then we progress all the way to abelian categories, en route meeting contexts such as Borceux--Bourn homological categories and Janelidze--Márki--Tholen semiabelian categories. We clarify the relationship between these axiomatic frameworks by direct comparison, but also by explaining how concrete examples fit into the selection. The outcome is a fine-grained set of criteria by which one can map varieties of algebras (in the sense of Universal Algebra) and topological models of algebraic theories into the various frameworks. The categorical tools for effective computation deal mostly with situations involving universal factorizations of morphisms, with exact sequences, and with the homology of chain complexes. Further, the categorical tools for computation include the `basic diagram lemmas' of homological algebra, that is the (Short) $5$-Lemma, the $(3\times 3)$-Lemma, the Snake Lemma, and applications thereof. We find that these tools are even available in some surprisingly weak categorical environments, such as the category of pointed sets. In discovering such features, we make systematic use of what we call the self-dual axis of a category.

On the category of (i,j)-Baire Bilocales

Abstract:We define and characterize the notion of (i,j)-Baireness for bilocales. We also give internal properties of (i,j)-Baire bilocales which are not translated from properties of (i,j)-Baireness in bispaces. It turns out (i,j)-Baire bilocales are conservative in bilocales, in the sense that a bitopological space is almost (i,j)-Baire if and only if the bilocale it induces is (i,j)-Baire. Furthermore, in the class of Noetherian bilocales, (i,j)-Baireness of a bilocale coincides with (i,j)-Baireness of its ideal bilocale. We also consider relative versions of (i,j)-Baire where we show that a bilocale is (i,j)-Baire only if the subbilocale induced by the Booleanization is (i,j)-Baire. We use the characterization of (i,j)-Baire bilocales to introduce and characterize (\tau_{i},\tau_{j})-Baireness in the category of topobilocales.

Abstract:Let $C$ and $R$ be unital rings and $Z$ an injective cogenerator for right $C$-modules. For an $R,C$-bimodule $U$ let $U^*=Hom_C(U,Z)$, $S=End_R(U)$ and $Biend_R(U)=End_S(U)$, the biendomorphism ring of $U$. Under suitable requirements on $U$ we show that $B:=Biend_R(U)$ can be identified with a subring of $\tilde{B}:=Biend_R(U^*)$,study conditions for the reverse inclusion and density of $B$ in $\tilde{B}$. In the case $C$ is contained in the center of $R$ we describe $Biend_R(R^*)$ in terms of the Arens products on $R^{**}$ and study Arens regularity of $R$ in the context of duality of modules. We characterize Arens regular algebras over fields.

Abstract:We define and study the notions of closure $\text{\rsfs{C}}$ operators and interior $\mathbf{I}$ operators of the category $\mathbf{CCov}$ of convergent covers which appears in positive topologies. The main motivation of this paper is to construct the concrete categories $\mathbf{\text{\rsfs{C}}\text{-} CCov}$, \ of\ $\mathbf{CCov}\text{-spaces}$, and $\mathbf{I}\text{-}\mathbf CCov$, \ of\ $\mathbf{CCov}\text{-spaces}$ and deduce that they are topological categories.

Categorical Realizability for Non-symmetric Closed Structures

Abstract:In categorical realizability, it is common to construct categories of assemblies and categories of modest sets from applicative structures. These categories have structures corresponding to the structures of applicative structures. In the literature, classes of applicative structures inducing categorical structures such as Cartesian closed categories and symmetric monoidal closed categories have been widely studied. In this paper, we expand these correspondences between categories with structure and applicative structures by identifying the classes of applicative structures giving rise to closed multicategories, closed categories, monoidal bi-closed categories as well as (non-symmetric) monoidal closed categories. These applicative structures are planar in that they correspond to appropriate planar lambda calculi by combinatory completeness. These new correspondences are tight: we show that, when a category of assemblies has one of the structures listed above, the based applicative structure is in the corresponding class. In addition, we introduce planar linear combinatory algebras by adopting linear combinatory algebras of Abramsky, Hagjverdi and Scott to our planar setting, that give rise to categorical models of the linear exponential modality and the exchange modality on the non-symmetric multiplicative intuitionistic linear logic.

$\mathbb{E}_n$-algebras in m-categories

Abstract:We prove a connectivity bound for maps of $\infty$-operads of the form $\mathbb{A}_{k_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes \mathbb{A}_{k_n} \to \mathbb{E}_n$, and as a consequence, give an inductive way to construct $\mathbb{E}_n$-algebras in $m$-categories. The result follows from a version of Eckmann-Hilton argument that takes into account both connectivity and arity of $\infty$-operads. Along the way, we prove a technical Blakers-Massey type statement for algebras of coherent $\infty$-operads.

Monoidal closure of Grothendieck constructions via $Σ$-tractable monoidal structures and Dialectica formulas

Abstract:We study the categorical structure of the Grothendieck construction of an indexed category $\mathcal{L}:\mathcal{C}^{op}\to\mathbf{CAT}$ and characterise fibred limits, colimits, and monoidal structures. Next, we give sufficient conditions for the monoidal closure of the total category $\Sigma_\mathcal{C} \mathcal{L}$ of a Grothendieck construction of an indexed category $\mathcal{L}:\mathcal{C}^{op}\to\mathbf{CAT}$. Our analysis is a generalization of Gödel's Dialectica interpretation, and it relies on a novel notion of $\Sigma$-tractable monoidal structure. As we will see, $\Sigma$-tractable coproducts simultaneously generalize cocartesian coclosed structures, biproducts and extensive coproducts. We analyse when the closed structure is fibred -- usually it is not.

Abstract:We define a notion of a connectivity structure on an $\infty$-category, analogous to a $t$-structure but applicable in unstable contexts -- such as spaces, or algebras over an operad. This allows us to generalize notions of n-skeleta, minimal skeleta, and cellular approximation from the category of spaces. For modules over an Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum, these are closely related to the notion of projective amplitude. We apply these to ring spectra, where they can be detected via the cotangent complex and higher Hochschild homology with coefficients. We show that the spectra $Y(n)$ of chromatic homotopy theory are minimal skeleta for $H\mathbb{F}_2$ in the category of associative ring spectra. Similarly, Ravenel's spectra $T(n)$ are shown to be minimal skeleta for $BP$ in the same way, which proves that these admit canonical associative algebra structures.

Abstract:We develop a 2-dimensional version of accessibility and presentability compatible with the formalism of flat pseudofunctors. First we give prerequisites on the different notions of 2-dimensional colimits, filteredness and cofinality; in particular we show that sigma-filteredness and bifilteredness are actually equivalent in practice for our purposes. Then, we define bi-accessible and bipresentable 2-categories in terms of bicompact objects and bifiltered bicolimits. We then characterize them as categories of flat pseudofunctors. We also prove a bi-accessible right bi-adjoint functor theorem and deduce a 2-dimensional Gabriel-Ulmer duality relating small bilex 2-categories and finitely bipresentable 2-categories. Finally, we show that 2-categories of pseudo-algebras of bifinitary pseudomonads on Cat are finitely bipresentable, which in particular captures the case of Lex, the 2-category of small lex categories. Invoking the technology of lex-colimits, we prove further that several 2-categories arising in categorical logic (Reg, Ex, Coh, Ext, Adh, Pretop) are also finitely bipresentable.

Abstract:For any commutative ring $R$, we show that the categories of $R$-coalgebras and cocommutative $R$-coalgebras are locally $\aleph_1$-presentable, while the categories of $R$-flat $R$-coalgebras are $\aleph_1$-accessible. Similarly, for any associative ring $R$, the category of $R$-corings is locally $\aleph_1$-presentable, while the category of $R$-$R$-bimodule flat $R$-corings is $\aleph_1$-accessible. The cardinality of the ring $R$ can be arbitrarily large. We also discuss $R$-corings with surjective counit and flat kernel. The proofs are straightforward applications of an abstract category-theoretic principle going back to Ulmer. For right or two-sided $R$-module flat $R$-corings, our cardinality estimate for the accessibility rank is not as good. A generalization to comonoid objects in accessible monoidal categories is also considered.

Abstract:A strict monoidal category referred to as affine Brauer category $\mathcal{AB}$ is introduced over a commutative ring $\kappa$ containing multiplicative identity $1$ and invertible element $2$. We prove that morphism spaces in $\mathcal{AB}$ are free over $\kappa$. The cyclotomic (or level $k$) Brauer category $\mathcal{CB}^f(\omega)$ is a quotient category of $\mathcal{AB}$. We prove that any morphism space in $\mathcal{CB}^f(\omega)$ is free over $\kappa$ with maximal rank if and only if the $\mathbf u$-admissible condition holds in the sense of (1.30). Affine Nazarov-Wenzl algebras and cyclotomic Nazarov-Wenzl algebras will be realized as certain endomorphism algebras in $\mathcal{AB}$ and $\mathcal{CB}^f(\omega)$, respectively. We will establish higher Schur-Weyl duality between cyclotomic Nazarov-Wenzl algebras and parabolic BGG categories $\mathcal O$ associated to symplectic and orthogonal Lie algebras over the complex field $\mathbb C$. This enables us to use standard arguments in [1,26,27] to compute decomposition matrices of cyclotomic Nazarov-Wenzl algebras. The level two case was considered by Ehrig and Stroppel in [14].

Abstract:Rings form a bicategory [Rings], with classes of bimodules as horizontal arrows, and bimodule maps as vertical arrows. The notion of Morita equivalence for rings can be translated in terms of bicategories in the following way. Two rings are Morita equivalent if and only if they are isomorphic objects in the bicategory. We repeat this construction for von Neumann algebras. Von Neumann algebras form a bicategory [W*], with classes of correspondences as horizontal arrows, and intertwiners as vertical arrows. Two von Neumann algebras are Morita equivalent if and only if they are isomorphic objects in the bicategory [W*].

Abstract:We show that the theory of De Morgan algebras has a model completion and axiomatise it. Then we prove that it is $\aleph_0$-categorical and describe definable and algebraic closures in that theory. We also obtain similar results for Boole-De Morgan algebras.

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative ring If $\mathcal{C}_1$ and $\mathcal{C}_2$ are $R$-linear triangulated categories then we can give an obvious triangulated structure on $\mathcal{C} = \mathcal{C}_1 \oplus \mathcal{C}_2$ where $Hom_\mathcal{C}(U, V) = 0$ if $U \in \mathcal{C}_i$ and $V \in \mathcal{C}_j$ with $i \neq j$. We say a $R$-linear triangulated category $\mathcal{C}$ is disconnected if $\mathcal{C} = \mathcal{C}_1 \oplus \mathcal{C}_2$ where $\mathcal{C}_i$ are non-zero triangulated subcategories of $\mathcal{C}$. Let $\mathcal{C}_i$ and $\mathcal{D}_j$ be connected triangulated $R$ categories with $i \in \Gamma$ and $j \in \Lambda$. Suppose there is an equivalence of triangulated $R$-categories \[ \Phi \colon \bigoplus_{i \in \Gamma}\mathcal{C}_i \xrightarrow{\cong} \bigoplus_{j \in \Lambda}\mathcal{D}_j \] Then we show that there is a bijective function $\pi \colon \Gamma \rightarrow \Lambda$ such that we have an equivalence $\mathcal{C}_i \cong \mathcal{D}_{\pi(i)} $ for all $i \in \Gamma$. We give several examples of connected triangulated categories and also of triangulated subcategories which decompose into utmost finitely many components.

Abstract:The bicategorical point of view provides a natural setting for many concepts in the representation theory of monoidal categories. We show that centers of twisted bimodule categories correspond to categories of 2-dimensional natural transformations and modifications between the deloopings of the twisting functors. We also show that dualities lift to centers of twisted bimodule categories. Inspired by the notion of (pre)bimonoidal functors due to McCurdy and Street and by bilax functors of Aguiar and Mahajan, we study 2-dimensional functors which are simultaneously lax and colax with a compatibility condition. Our approach uses a sort of 2-categorical Yang-Baxter operators, but the idea could equally be carried out using a kind of 2-categorical braidings. We show how this concept, which we call bilax functors, generalize many known notions from the theory of Hopf algebras. We propose a 2-category of bilax functors whose 1-cells generalize the notions of Yetter-Drinfel`d modules in ordinary categories, and a type of bimonads and mixed distributive laws in 2-categories. We show that the 2-category of bilax functors from the trivial 2-category is isomorphic to the 2-category of bimonads, and that there is a faithful 2-functor from the latter to the 2-category of mixed distributive laws of Power and Watanabe.

Homotopification and categorification of Leibniz conformal algebras

Abstract:Bakalov, Kac and Voronov introduced Leibniz conformal algebras (and their cohomology) as a non-commutative analogue of Lie conformal algebras. Leibniz conformal algebras are closely related to field algebras which are non-skew-symmetric generalizations of vertex algebras. In this paper, we first introduce $Leib_\infty$-conformal algebras (also called strongly homotopy Leibniz conformal algebras) where the Leibniz conformal identity holds up to homotopy. We give some equivalent descriptions of $Leib_\infty$-conformal algebras and characterize some particular classes of $Leib_\infty$-conformal algebras in terms of the cohomology of Leibniz conformal algebras and crossed modules of Leibniz conformal algebras. On the other hand, we also introduce Leibniz conformal $2$-algebras that can be realized as the categorification of Leibniz conformal algebras. Finally, we observe that the category of Leibniz conformal $2$-algebras is equivalent to the category of $2$-term $Leib_\infty$-conformal algebras.

Fixpoint operators for 2-categorical structures

Abstract:Fixpoint operators are tools to reason on recursive programs and data types obtained by induction (e.g. lists, trees) or coinduction (e.g. streams). They were given a categorical treatment with the notion of categories with fixpoints. A theorem by Plotkin and Simpson characterizes existence and uniqueness of fixpoint operators for categories satisfying some conditions on bifree algebras and recovers the standard examples of the category Cppo ($\omega$-complete pointed partial orders and continuous functions) in domain theory and the relational model in linear logic. We present a categorification of this result and develop the theory of 2-categorical fixpoint operators where the 2-dimensional framework allows to model the execution steps for languages with (co)inductive principles. We recover the standard categorical constructions of initial algebras and final coalgebras for endofunctors as well as fixpoints of generalized species and polynomial functors.
