Abstract:We determine the spin-exchange dynamical structure factor of the Heisenberg spin chain, as is measured by indirect Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS). We find that two-spin RIXS excitations nearly entirely fractionalize into *two spinon* states. These share the same continuum lower bound as single-spin neutron scattering excitations, even if the relevant final states belong to orthogonal symmetry sectors. The RIXS spectral weight is mainly carried by higher-energy excitations, and is beyond the reach of the low-energy effective theories of Luttinger liquid type.

Abstract:Dynamical spin structure factors of quantum spin nematic states are calculated in a spin-1/2 square-lattice J(1)-J(2) model with ferromagnetic J(1) and competing antiferromagnetic J(2) interactions. To this end, we use a fermion representation, generalizing it to N flavors. We begin with a spin-triplet pairing state of fermion fields, called Z(2) planar state, which is a stable saddle-point solution in the large-N limit in a finite parameter range where the couplings J(1) and J(2) compete strongly [R. Shindou and T. Momoi, Phys. Rev. B 80, 064410 (2009)]. Using a large-N expansion, we take into account fluctuations around this saddle point up to corrections of order 1/N. The dynamical spin structure factors thus obtained signify the existence of gapless q-linear director-wave (spin-wave) modes at q = (0,0) and gapped "gauge-field"-like collective modes at q = (pi,pi), whose spectral weight vanishes as a linear and quadratic function of the momentum, respectively. The low-energy collective modes contain fluctuations of nematic-director, spin, and gauge degrees of freedom. Associated with the gapless q-linear modes, we evaluate the temperature dependence of the nuclear spin relaxation rate 1/T-1 in the low-temperature regime as 1/T-1 proportional to T2d-1, where d is the effective spatial dimension. Finite temperature structure factor in the Haldane-Shastry spin chain

Abstract:The Haldane-Shastry spin chain can be mapped to the infinite coupling limit of the SU(2) spin Calogero-Sutherland model. We use the $\mathfrak{gl}_2$ Jack polynomials' technology to compute the form factors of the spin operator on the multi-spinon spectrum. The spin structure factor is obtained through a form factor expansion. The expansion is proven to converge in the small momentum limit. Numerics based on two- and four-spinons contributions give an approximate result for the infinite temperature static and dynamic spin structure factor.

Abstract:We compute the zero temperature dynamical structure factor $S({\bf q},\omega)$ of the triangular lattice Heisenberg model using a Schwinger Boson approach that includes the Gaussian fluctuations ($1/N$ correction) of the saddle point solution. While the ground state of this model exhibits a well-known 120$^{\circ}$ magnetic ordering, the excitation spectrum revealed by $S({\bf q},\omega)$ has a strong quantum character that is not captured by low-order $1/S$ expansions. The low-energy magnons consist of two spinon bound states confined by gauge fluctuations of the auxiliary fields, which can produce internal structure of the magnon peaks. In addition, the high-energy continuum of spinon modes extends up to about three times the single-magnon bandwidth.

Abstract:We compute the momentum resolved dynamical spin structure factor $S(k,\omega)$ of the SU(4) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice assuming the $\pi$-flux Dirac spin liquid ground state by two methods: (i) variationally using Gutzwiller projected particle-hole excitations of the $\pi$-flux Fermi sea and (ii) in the non-interacting parton mean-field picture. The two approaches produce qualitatively similar results. Based on this analogy, we argue that the energy spectrum of the projected excitations is a gapless continuum of fractional excitations. Quantitatively, the Gutzwiller projection shifts the weight from higher to lower energies, thus emphasizing the lower edge of the continuum. In the mean-field approach, we obtained the $1/\text{distance}^4$ decay of the spin correlation function, and the local correlations show $S^{33}_{\text{MF}}(\omega)\propto \omega^3$ behavior.

Abstract:The geometric frustration of the spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on the triangulated Kagome (triangles-in-triangles) lattice is investigated within the framework of an exact analytical method based on the generalized star-triangle mapping transformation. Ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are obtained along with other exact results for the partition function, Helmholtz free energy, internal energy, entropy, and specific heat, by establishing a precise mapping relationship to the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on the Kagome lattice. It is shown that the residual entropy of the disordered spin liquid phase is for the quantum Ising-Heisenberg model significantly lower than for its semi-classical Ising limit (S_0/N_T k_B = 0.2806 and 0.4752, respectively), which implies that quantum fluctuations partially lift a macroscopic degeneracy of the ground-state manifold in the frustrated regime. The investigated model system has an obvious relevance to a series of polymeric coordination compounds Cu_9X_2(cpa)_6 (X=F, Cl, Br and cpa=carboxypentonic acid) for which we made a theoretical prediction about the temperature dependence of zero-field specific heat.

Abstract:In the thermodynamic limit, we present an exactcalculation of the time dynamics of a central spin coupling withits environment at finite temperatures. The interactions belong tothe Heisenberg XY type. The case of an environment with finitenumber of spins is also discussed. To get the reduced densitymatrix, we use a novel operator technique which is mathematicallysimple and physically clear, and allows us to treat systems andenvironments that could all be strongly coupled mutually andinternally. The expectation value of the central spin and the vonNeumann entropy are obtained.

Abstract:We compute the zero-temperature dynamical structure factor S(q, omega) of the triangular lattice Heisenberg model (TLHM) using a Schwinger boson approach that includes the Gaussian fluctuations (1/N corrections) of the saddle-point solution. While the ground state of this model exhibits a well-known 120 degrees magnetic ordering, experimental observations have revealed a strong quantum character of the excitation spectrum. We conjecture that this phenomenon arises from the proximity of the ground state of the TLHM to the quantum melting point separating the magnetically ordered and spin-liquid states. Within this scenario, magnons are described as collective modes (two-spinon bound states) of a spinon condensate (Higgs phase) that spontaneously break the SU(2) symmetry of the TLHM. Crucial to our results is the proper account of this spontaneous symmetry breaking. The main qualitative difference relative to semiclassical treatments (1/S expansion) is the presence of a high-energy spinon continuum extending up to about three times the single-magnon bandwidth. In addition, the magnitude of the ordered moment (m = 0.224) agrees very well with numerical results and the low-energy part of the single-magnon dispersion is in very good agreement with series expansions. Our results indicate that the Schwinger boson approach is an adequate starting point for describing the excitation spectrum of some magnetically ordered compounds that are near the quantum melting point separating this Higgs phase from the deconfined spin-liquid state.

Abstract:Quantum dynamics of strongly correlated systems is a challenging problem. Although the low energy fractional excitations of one-dimensional integrable models are often well understood, exploring quantum dynamics in these systems remains challenging in the gapless regime, especially at intermediate and high energies. Based on the algebraic Bethe ansatz formalism, we study spin dynamics in a representative one- dimensional strongly correlated model, i.e., the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ chain with the Ising anisotropy, via the form-factor formulas. Various excitations at different energy scales are identified crucial to the dynamic spin structure factors under the guidance of sum rules. At small magnetic polarizations, gapless excitations dominate the low energy spin dynamics arising from the magnetic-field-induced incommensurability. In contrast, spin dynamics at intermediate and high energies is characterized by the two- and three-string states, which are multiparticle excitations based on the commensurate Neel ordered background. Our work is helpful for experimental studies on spin dynamics in both condensed matter and cold atom systems beyond the low energy effective Luttinger liquid theory. Based on an intuitive physical picture, we speculate that the dynamic feature at high energies due to the multiparticle antibound state excitations can be generalized to nonintegrable spin systems.
Nature of spinons in the 1D spin chains

Abstract:We provide an intuitive understanding of the collective low-energy spin excitation of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain, known as the spinon. To this end, we demonstrate how a single spinon can be excited by adding one extra spin to the ground state. This procedure accurately reproduces all key features of the spinon's dispersion. These follow from the vanishing norm of the excited state which is triggered by the ground state entanglement. Next, we show that the spinon dispersion can be approximately reproduced if we replace the true ground state with the simplest valence-bond solid. This proves that the spinon of the one-dimensional Heisenberg model can be understood as a single spin flowing through a valence-bond solid.

Abstract:The exchange-correlation potential formalism previously introduced and applied to the one-dimensional Hubbard model has been extended to spin systems and applied to the case of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin$-\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model. Within the spin exchange-correlation potential formulation, a new sum rule for spin-systems is derived. The exchange-correlation potential for the Heisenberg model is extrapolated from exact diagonalization results of small antiferromagnetic Heisenberg clusters. This procedure is also employed to revisit and computationally improve the previous investigation of the exchange-correlation potential of the half-filled Hubbard model, which was based on the exchange-correlation potential of the dimer. Numerical comparisons with exact benchmark calculations for both the Heisenberg and the Hubbard models indicate that, starting from the exchange-correlation potential of a finite cluster, the extrapolation procedure yields a one-particle spectral function with favorable accuracy at a relatively low computational cost. In addition, a comparison between the ground state energies for the one-dimensional Hubbard and Heisenberg models displays how the well known similarity in behavior of the two models at large interactions manifests within the exchange-correlation potential formalism.

Abstract:Multidimensional coherent spectroscopy is a powerful tool to characterize nonlinear optical response functions. Typically, multidimensional spectra are interpreted via a perturbative framework that straightforwardly provides intuition into the density matrix dynamics that give rise to specific spectral features. When the goal is to characterize system coupling to a thermal bath however, the perturbative formalism becomes unwieldy and yields less intuition. Here, we extend an approach developed by Vagov et al. to provide an exact expression for multidimensional spectra of a spin-boson Hamiltonian up to arbitrary order of electric field interaction. We demonstrate the utility of this expression by modeling polaron formation and coherent exciton-phonon coupling in quantum dots, which strongly agree with experiment.

Dynamics of Spin Helices in the One-Dimensional $XX$ Model

Abstract:Motivated by cold-atom experiments and a desire to understand far-from-equilibrium quantum transport, we analytically study the dynamics of spin helices in the one-dimensional $XX$ model. We use a Jordan-Wigner transformation to map the spin chain onto a non-interacting Fermi gas with simple equations of motion. The resulting dynamics are nontrivial, however, as the spin-helix initial condition corresponds to a highly nonequilibrium distribution of the fermions. We find a separation of timescales between the in-plane and out-of-plane spin dynamics. We gain insights from analyzing the case of a uniform spin chain and from a semiclassical model. One of our key findings is that the spin correlation functions decay as $t^{-1/2}$ at long time, in contrast to the experimentally observed exponential decay.

Zero-field Time Correlation Functions of Four Classical Heisenberg Spins on a Ring

Abstract:A model relevant for the study of certain molecular magnets is the ring of N=4 classical spins with equal near-neighbor isotropic Heisenberg exchange interactions. Assuming classical Heisenberg spin dynamics, we solve explicitly for the time evolution of each of the spins. Exact triple integral representations are derived for the auto, near-neighbor, and next-nearest-neighbor time correlation functions for any temperature. At infinite temperature, the correlation functions are reduced to quadrature. We then evaluate the Fourier transforms of these functions in closed form, which are double integrals. At low temperatures, the Fourier transform functions explicitly demonstrate the presence of magnons. Our exact results for the infinite temperature correlation functions in the long-time asymptotic limit differ qualitatively from those obtained assuming diffusive spin dynamics. Whether such explicitly non-hydrodynamic behavior would be maintained for large-N rings is discussed.

Spin dynamics simulation of the three-dimensional XY model: Structure factor and transport properties

Abstract:We present extensive Monte-Carlo spin dynamics simulations of the classical XY model in three dimensions on a simple cubic lattice with periodic boundary conditions. A recently developed efficient integration algorithm for the equations of motion is used, which allows a substantial improvement of statistics and large integration times. We find spin wave peaks in a wide range around the critical point and spin diffusion for all temperatures. At the critical point we find evidence for a violation of dynamic scaling in the sense that independent components of the dynamic structure factor S(q,w) require different dynamic exponents in order to obtain scaling. Below the critical point we investigate the dispersion relation of the spin waves and the linewidths of S(q,w) and find agreement with mode coupling theory. Apart from strong spin wave peaks we observe additional peaks in S(q,w) which can be attributed to two-spin wave interactions. The overall lineshapes are also discussed and compared to mode coupling predictions. Finally, we present first results for the transport coefficient D(q,w) of the out-of-plane magnetization component at the critical point, which is related to the thermal conductivity of He4 near the superfluid-normal transition.

Abstract:We have investigated the zero-and finite-temperature behaviors of the anisotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg XXZ spin-1/2 chain in the presence of a transverse magnetic field (h). The attention is concentrated on an interval of magnetic field between the factorizing field (h(f)) and the critical one (h(c)). The model presents a spin-flop phase for 0 < h < h(f) with an energy scale which is defined by the long range antiferromagnetic order while it undergoes an entanglement phase transition at h = h(f). The entanglement estimators clearly show that the entanglement is lost exactly at h = h(f), which justifies different quantum correlations on both sides of the factorizing field. As a consequence of zero entanglement (at h = h(f)) the ground state is known exactly as a product of single-particle states which is the starting point for initiating a spin wave theory. The linear spin wave theory is implemented to obtain the specific heat and thermal entanglement of the model in the interested region. A double-peak structure is found in the specific heat around h = h(f), which manifests the existence of two energy scales in the system as a result of two competing orders before the critical point. These results are confirmed by the low temperature Lanczos data which we have computed.

Abstract:We study the dynamic structure factor $S(\vec{q},\omega)$ of superfluid 4He at zero temperature in the roton momentum region and beyond using field-theoretical Green's function techniques. We start from the Gavoret-Nozi\`{e}res two-particle propagator and introduce the concept of quasiparticles. We treat the residual (weak) interaction between quasiparticles as being local in coordinate space and weakly energy dependent. Our quasiparticle model explicitly incorporates the Bose-Einstein condensate. A complete formula for the dynamic susceptibility, which is related to $S (\vec{q},\omega)$, is derived. The structure factor is numerically calculated in a self-consistent way in the special case of a momentum independent interaction between quasiparticles. Results are compared with experiment and other theoretical approaches.
