Abstract:The massive emission of CO2 has caused a series of environmental problems, including global warming, which exacerbates natural disasters and human health. Cu-based catalysts have shown great activity in the reduction of CO2, but the mechanism of CO2 activation remains ambiguous. In this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the hydrogenation of CO2 on Cu(211)-Rh, Cu(211)-Ni, Cu(211)-Co, and Cu(211)-Ru surfaces. The doping of Rh, Ni, Co, and Ru was found to enhance CO2 hydrogenation to produce COOH. For CO2 hydrogenation to produce HCOO, Ru plays a positive role in promoting CO dissociation, while Rh, Ni, and Co increase the barriers. These results indicate that Ru is the most effective additive for CO2 reduction in Cu-based catalysts. In addition, the doping of Rh, Ni, Co, and Ru alters the electronic properties of Cu, and the activity of Cu-based catalysts was subsequently affected according to differential charge analysis. The analysis of Bader charge shows good predictions for CO2 reduction over Cu-based catalysts. This study provides some fundamental aids for the rational design of efficient and stable CO2-reducing agents to mitigate CO2 emission.

Abstract:We characterized CO2 adsorption and diffusion on the missing row reconstructed Cu(100)-O surface using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations with dispersion. We deposited CO2 molecules in situ at 5K, which allowed us to unambiguously identify individual CO2 molecules and their adsorption sites. Based on a comparison of experimental and DFT-generated STM images, we find that the CO2 molecules sit in between the O atoms in the missing row reconstructed Cu(100)-O surface. The CO2 molecules are easily perturbed by the STM tip under typical imaging conditions, suggesting that the molecules are weakly bound to the surface. The calculated adsorption energy, vibrational modes, and diffusion barriers of the CO2 molecules also indicate weak adsorption, in qualitative agreement with the experiments. A comparison of tunneling spectroscopy and DFT-calculated density of states shows that the primary change near the Fermi level is associated with changes to the surface states with negligible contribution from the CO2 molecular states.
Theoretical Insights into Synergistic Effects at Cu/TiC Interfaces for Promoting CO 2 Activation

Abstract:The adsorption behaviors of CO2 at the Cun/TiC(001) interfaces (n = 1–8) have been investigated using the density functional theory method. Our results reveal that the introduction of copper clusters on a TiC surface can significantly improve the thermodynamic stability of CO2 chemisorption. However, the most stable adsorption site is sensitive to the size and morphology of Cun particles. The interfacial configuration is the most stable structure for copper clusters with small (n ≤ 2) and large (n ≥ 8) sizes, in which both Cu particles and TiC support are involved in CO2 activation. In such a case, the synergistic behavior is associated with the ligand effect introduced by directly forming adsorption bonds with CO2. For those Cun clusters with a medium size (n = 3–7), the configuration where CO2 adsorbs solely on the exposed hollow site constructed by Cu atoms at the interface shows the best stability, and the charger transfer becomes the primary origin of the synergistic effect in promoting CO2 activation. Since the most obvious deformation of CO2 is observed for the TiC(001)-surface-supported Cu4 and Cu7 particles, copper clusters with specific sizes of n = 4 and 7 exhibit the best ability for CO2 activation. Furthermore, the kinetic barriers for CO2 dissociation on Cu4- and Cu7-supported TiC surfaces are determined. The findings obtained in this work provide useful insights into optimizing the Cu/TiC interface with high catalytic activation of CO2 by precisely controlling the size and dispersion of copper particles.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The adsorptions of CO and O2 molecules individually on the stoichiometric Cu-terminated Cu2O（111） surface are investigated by first-principles calculations on the basis of the density functional theory.The calculated results indicate that the CO molecule preferably coordinates to the Cu2 site through its C atom with an adsorption energy of -1.69 eV,whereas the O2 molecule is most stably adsorbed in a tilt type with one O atom coordinating to the Cu2 site and the other O atom coordinating to the Cu1 site,and has an adsorption energy of -1.97 eV.From the analysis of density of states,it is observed that Cu 3d transfers electrons to 2π orbital of the CO molecule and the highest occupied 5σ orbital of the CO molecule transfers electrons to the substrate.The sharp band of Cu 4s is delocalized when compared to that before the CO molecule adsorption,and overlaps substantially with bands of the adsorbed CO molecule.There is a broadening of the 2π orbital of the O2 molecule because of its overlapping with the Cu 3d orbital,indicating that strong 3d-2π interactions are involved in the chemisorption of the O2 molecule on the surface.
Adsorption of CO on the Fe3O4(001) Surface

Abstract:The interaction of CO with the Fe3O4(001)-(rt2xrt2)R45{\deg} surface was studied using temperature programmed desorption (TPD), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the latter both under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions and in CO pressures up to 1 mbar. In general, the CO-Fe3O4 interaction is found to be weak. The strongest adsorption occurs at surface defects, leading to small TPD peaks at 115 K, 130 K and 190 K. Desorption from the regular surface occurs in two distinct regimes. For coverages up to 2 CO molecules per (rt2xrt2)R45{\deg} unit cell, the desorption maximum shows a large shift with increasing coverage, from initially 105 K to 70 K. For coverages between 2 and 4 molecules per (rt2xrt2)R45{\deg} unit cell, a much sharper desorption feature emerges at 50 K. Thermodynamic analysis of the TPD data suggests a phase transition from a dilute 2D gas into an ordered overlayer with CO molecules bound to surface Fe3+ sites. XPS data acquired at 45 K in UHV are consistent with physisorption. Some carbon-containing species are observed in the near-ambient-pressure XPS experiments at room temperature, but are attributed to contamination and/or reaction with CO with water from the residual gas. No evidence was found for surface reduction or carburization by CO molecules.
CO2 activation and dissociation on In2O3(110) supported PdnPt(4- n) (n = 0-4) catalysts: a density functional theory study

Abstract:Converting CO2 into valuable chemicals via catalytic reactions can mitigate both the greenhouse effect and energy shortage problems, thus designing efficient catalysts have attracted considerable attention over the past decades. In this work, a density functional theory (DFT) calculation was carried out to investigate the CO2 activation and dissociation processes on various PdnPt(4-n)/In2O3 (n = 0-4) catalysts. The PdnPt(4-n)/In2O3 models were initially built, and the interface sites of PdnPt(4-n)/In2O3 for CO2 adsorption were confirmed among cluster sites and substrate sites. The CO2 adsorption geometries, charger transfer, and projected density of states (PDOS) were analyzed to study the CO2-PdnPt(4-n)/In2O3 interactions. From the adsorbed *CO2, the transition states (TSs) for CO2 dissociation to form *CO and *O were gained to reveal the characteristics of the activated CO2δ-. Overall, according to the adsorption energy Eads results, the bimetallic PdPt3/In2O3 and Pd3Pt/In2O3 catalysts showed the strongest and weakest CO2 adsorption stabilities, respectively, while the Pd element addition decreases the barriers for CO2 dissociation with the priority order of Pd4 > Pd3Pt > Pd2Pt2 > PdPt3 > Pt4. The Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi (BEP) relation between activation barriers (Eb) and reaction energies E was obtained for the CO2 dissociation mechanism on PdnPt(4-n)/In2O3 catalysts with the equation of E = 0.20Eb + 0.40. Finally, the optimal Pd2Pt2/In2O3 catalyst for CO2 activation and dissociation was proposed. This study provides useful information for CO2 activation and conversation procedures on bimetal-oxide catalysts, and helps to take the optimal design of PdPt/In2O3 catalysts for the CO2 reaction.

Abstract:Detailed density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the adsorption energies (Ead) for oxygen on monolayer Pd on top of the Pd-Cu face-centered cubic (FCC) alloy and intermetallic B2 structure revealed a linear correspondence between the adsorption energies and the d-band center position. The calculated barrier (Ebarrier) for oxygen dissociation depends linearly on the reaction energy difference (ΔE). The O₂ has a stronger adsorption strength and smaller barrier on the intermetallic Pd-Cu surface than on its FCC alloy surface. The room-temperature free energy (ΔG) analysis suggests the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathways proceed by a direct dissociation mechanism instead of hydrogenation into OOH. These results might be of use in designing intermetallic Pd-Cu as ORR electrocatalysts.

Influence of CO Adsorption on the Structure of Electric Double Layer on Cu Surface

Abstract:Understanding the interplay between reactant adsorbate and structure of the electric double layer (EDL) is crucial as it plays a key role in determining the efficiency and kinetics of heterogeneous electrocatalytic reactions. In this context, our study presents a comprehensive experimental analysis of the EDL structure and its interaction with CO adsorption on Cu surfaces. Utilizing in situ surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) and electrochemical impedance characterizations, we investigate the impact of CO adsorption on EDL properties at various CO pressures. Our findings demonstrate a significant decrease in EDL capacitance with increased CO adsorption, linked to reduced cation density, increased EDL thickness, and weakened interfacial electric field strength. Additionally, we observed a considerable decline in the relative dielectric constant of the EDL, which is likely attributable to the influence of adsorbed CO altering the dielectric properties of the medium. These results emphasize the critical role of adsorbate-EDL interactions in electrocatalytic processes, providing new insights into these complex dynamics.
Impact of Subsurface Oxygen on CO2 Charging Energy Changes in Cu Surfaces

Abstract:Subsurface oxygen in oxide-derived copper catalysts significantly influences CO$_2$ activation. However, its effect on the molecular charging process, the key to forming the CO$_2^{\delta-}$ intermediate, remains poorly understood. We employ many-body perturbation theory to investigate the impact of the structural factors induced by the subsurface oxygen on charged activation of CO$_2$. By computing the molecular single-particle state energy of the electron-accepting orbital ($\sigma*$) on Cu (111) surface, we examined how this molecular quasi-particle (QP) energy changes with varied vicinity of adsorption and multiple subsurface oxygen configuration. We demonstrate that subsurface oxygen impairs CO$_2$ charging, with its presence and density being influential factors. The non-local potential proves substantial for accurate excitation energy predictions yet is not sensitive to minor atomic structural changes. More importantly, state delocalization and hybridization are critical for determining QP energy. These insights are enlightening for designing atomic architectures to optimize catalytic performance on modified surfaces.

First-Principles Study of the Adsorption of Co on Tio2(110)

Abstract:The adsorption of CO on TiO2(110) is investigated using the full-potential linearized-augmented-plane-wave method. The equilibrium structures of the clean and adsorbed TiO2(110) surfaces are optimized through total-energy and atomic force calculations. Two geometries of CO absorption, namely, OC-Ti and CO-Ti, were considered. It is found that the former orientation is preferred. The calculated adsorption energy and redshift of the CO stretch frequency based on the local-density approximation are 0.79 eV/molecule and 23 cm(-1) respectively. The gradient corrections reduce the CO-TiO2 binding energy to 0.25 eV/molecule. CO interacts with the TiO2(110) substrate mainly via its 5 sigma state. Significant charge redistribution is involved in the CO/TiO2(110) interaction, which changes the Coulomb potential and subsequently causes large shifts in the core and valence states of the CO adsorbate.
Adsorption of CO on Rutile TiO2 (110)-1 × 1 Surface with Preadsorbed O Adatoms

Abstract:We report the investigation on the adsorption behaviors of CO on the rutile TiO2(110)-1 x 1 surface with preadsorbed O adatoms using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) joint with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The STM experimental results show that the diffusive CO molecules tend to adsorb at the site close to the O adatoms, forming CO-O and CO-O-CO complexes. These complexes are quite stable against the high bias voltages and UV illumination. DFT calculations give an activation energy barrier of 0.56 eV for CO oxidation through the CO-O complex to produce CO2. Our experimental and theoretical results both indicate that the dissociative O-2, that is, the O adatoms on TO4+, may not be directly responsible for the catalytic oxidation at low temperature.
DFT insights into doping and oxygen vacancy effects on CO and CO2 adsorptions over CuAl 2 O 4 spinel surfaces

Abstract:Introducing transition metals into CuAl 2 O 4 spinel enhances catalyst stability and Cu sintering resistance in methanol steam reforming. Yet, the influence of doping on vacancy formation and the adsorption behaviors of CO 2 (the primary product) and CO (the notorious byproduct) remains unclear. Herein, we employed DFT + U to investigate CO and CO 2 adsorption on perfect, M-doped (Fe, Co, and Ni), and M-doped oxygen-deficient CuAl 2 O 4 spinel (1 0 0) and (1 1 0) surfaces. We find that stronger CO adsorption on (1 0 0) than (1 1 0) surfaces across all M-doped surfaces, while CO 2 adsorbs more stronger on (1 1 0) surfaces. The weakened CO adsorptions are observed on Fe and Ni-doped surfaces, demonstrating that doping plays a significant role in improving the resistance to CO poisoning. Co-doping promotes CO adsorption via a 'CO 3 ′-like structure on CuAl 2 O 4 (1 1 0) surface and boosts the CO oxidation. Furthermore, infrared spectroscopy simulation indicates that the vibrational frequencies for CO linear adsorption, formation of bent 'CO 2 ′ and 'CO 3 ′-like structures are within the ranges of 2042–2078, 1463–1566, and 1497–1816 cm −1 , respectively. In addition, Ov on Ni-doped surfaces can significantly strengthen the CO 2 adsorption by 0.6–1.3 eV, highlighting the doping and oxygen-defect engineering in enhancing the CO 2 capture. This research uncovers the critical impact of metal doping and oxygen vacancies on CO and CO 2 adsorptions over CuAl 2 O 4 spinel catalyst, providing insights for developing catalysts with improved resistance to CO poisoning and enhanced CO oxidation which is vital for methanol steam reforming.

Abstract:This study investigates the oxidation behavior of Cu3Pt(100) in CO2 using a combination of ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, and density functional theory modeling. Our in situ measurements reveal the simultaneous oxidation and reduction of Cu2O due to the opposing effects of atomic oxygen and CO generated from dissociative CO2 adsorption, leading to a dynamic equilibrium state of simultaneously occurring redox reactions. Complementary atomistic calculations elucidate the inhibitory effects of subsurface Pt enrichment and the counteracting roles of CO2 and CO in surface oxidation and reduction. These results provide mechanistic insights into the dissociative pathway of CO2 molecules and dynamic evolution of surface composition and reactivity of Cu-based alloy catalysts in CO2-rich environments, with broader implications for tuning gas-surface reactions by manipulating gas reactants or solid surface composition.
The Role of Cu‐oxide and Cu adatoms in the Reactivity of CO2 on Cu(110)

Abstract:We investigate the interaction of CO2 with metallic and oxidized Cu(110) surfaces using a combination of near-ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy (NAP-STM) and theory calculations. While the Cu(110) and full CuO films are inert, the interface between bare Cu(110) and the CuO film is observed to react instantly with CO2 at a 10 mbar pressure. The reaction is observed to proceed from the interfacial sites of CuO/Cu(110). During reaction with CO2, the CuO/Cu(110) interface releases Cu adatoms which combine with CO3 to produce a variety of added Cu-CO3 structures, whose stability depends on the gas pressure of CO2. A main implication for the reactivity of Cu(110) is that Cu adatoms and highly undercoordinated CuO segments are created on the Cu(110) surface through the interaction with CO2, which may act as reaction-induced active sites. In the case of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, we used theory to assess such sites to indicate that their presence may significantly promote CH3OH formation. Our study thus implies that the CuO/Cu(110) interfacial system is highly dynamic in the presence of CO2, and it suggests a possible strong importance of reaction-induced Cu and CuO sites for the surface chemistry of Cu(110) in CO2-related catalysis.

Theoretically Predicted CO Adsorption and Activation on the Co-Doped hcp-Fe7C3 Catalyst

Abstract:The Hcp-Fe7C3 phase has attracted more attention due to the high catalytic activity in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reactions. In this work, the adsorption and activation of CO on a Co-doped hcp-Fe7C3 catalyst were investigated by density functional theory (DFT) in order to understand the effect of Co doping on the initial step of FTS reactions on iron-based catalysts. Different Co-doped hcp-Fe7C3 001 and 11 ̄0 surfaces were constructed, and the CO adsorption configurations were studied. The calculated results show that the structure of the 001 surface remains basically unchanged after doping with Co atoms, while the replacement of Fe or C atoms on 11 ̄0 surfaces with Co atoms has a significant impact on the surface structure. The top sites on the doped Co atoms of hcp-Fe7C3 are disadvantages for the CO adsorption, whereas the T, 2F, or 3F sites around the doped Co atoms are beneficial for promoting the adsorption of CO. The CO direct dissociation pathways on the four types of Co-doped hcp-Fe7C3 001 surfaces are exothermic, while the H-assisted dissociation pathways of CO are endothermic. The H-assisted activation via HCO on the 3F1 site of the 2Co2-doped hcp-Fe7C3 001 surface shows the lowest energy barrier of 1.96 eV. For the Co-doped hcp-Fe7C3 11 ̄0 surfaces, the H-assisted activation via HCO is the preferred activation pathway for CO on the Co-doped surfaces with the energy barrier of approximately 1.30 eV.

Abstract:CO adsorption and dissociation on Ru-doped Co(1 0 0) surfaces at different CO coverage compared to clean surface were investigated based on spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT), in order to explore the effect of the initial step of Ru promoter on CO activation in cobalt-based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS). The results show that CO adsorption is highly site-dependent, the adsorption strength of CO at different types of adsorption sites is determined by the interaction between the adsorbed CO molecule and Ru-doped Co(1 0 0) surfaces. CO dissociation is promoted at hollow sites but inhibited at top and bridge sites above the Ru atoms. In addition, the amount of saturated adsorbed CO is increased while the amount of dissociated CO is decreased on the Ru-doped Co(1 0 0) surfaces at high coverage. Combining the experimental results, it is concluded that the adsorption model is preferred than substitution model for CO activation, because the increased CO molecular states in adsorption model is facile for the subsequent H-assisted dissociation on Co surface. The present work suggests that the addition of Ru promoter can improve the CO activation on Co(1 0 0) surface and pave the way for experimental research.

Abstract:Interaction of carbon monoxide (CO) with transition metal surfaces is an essential part of CO oxidation catalysis. In this report, we investigate and compare CO adsorption behavior on Pt (111) and Pd (111) surfaces combining first-principles (FP) calculations and lattice gas Monte-Carlo (LG-MC) simulations. Our results indicate that despite stronger CO binding on Pd (111) at low coverage, more repulsive lateral interactions on Pd surface lead to a more rapid adsorption energy decrease with respect to coverage. This results in lower saturation coverage and weaker CO desorption energies on Pd (111), which could contribute to its excellent reactivity observed under high pressure reaction conditions.
Atomic Layer Deposition on Pd Nanocrystals for Forming Pd-TiO 2 Interface Toward Enhanced CO Oxidation

Abstract:Pd typically exhibits relatively low catalytic activity in CO oxidation, as CO is apt to be adsorbed on Pd to poison the surface for O2 activation. In this Letter, we report that this limitation can be overcome by integrating Pd with TiO2. The TiO2 was coated on Pd nanocubes with a controllable thickness using atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. Given the different work functions of TiO2 and Pd, the electrons in TiO2 semiconductor will flow toward Pd. With the electron density increased on Pd, the adsorption of CO to Pd will be weakened while the oxygen activation can be facilitated. Meanwhile, the interface-confined sites at Pd-TiO2 may further enhance the oxygen activation. As the species adsorption and activation are strongly correlated with electron density, the performance of Pd-TiO2 in CO oxidation turns out to depend on the TiO2 thickness, which determines the number of transferred electrons, within a certain range (<1.8 nm). This work provides a new strategy for enhancing catalytic performance through tailoring charge densities in hybrid catalysts.
Electrochemical CO<sub>2</sub>reduction on Pd-modified Cu foil

Abstract:Bimetallic catalysts can improve CO(2)reduction efficiency via the combined properties of two metals. CuPd shows enhanced CO(2)reduction activity compared to copper alone. Using differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) and electrochemical infrared (IR) spectroscopy, volatile products and adsorbed intermediates were measured during CO(2)and CO reduction on Cu and CuPd. The IR band corresponding to adsorbed CO appears 300 mV more positive on CuPd than that on Cu, indicating acceleration of CO(2)reduction to CO. Electrochemical IR spectroscopy measurements in CO-saturated solutions reveal similar potentials for CO adsorption and CO(3)(2-)desorption on CuPd and Cu, indicating that CO adsorption is controlled by desorption of CO32-. DEMS measurements carried out during CO reduction at both electrodes showed that the onset potential for reduction of CO to CH(4)and CH3OH on CuPd is about 200 mV more positive than that on Cu. We attribute these improvements to interaction of Cu and Pd, which shifts the d-band center of the Cu sites.
Low Barrier Carbon Induced CO Dissociation on Stepped Cu

Abstract:Using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we observe the breaking of the strong interatomic bond in molecular CO at low temperature on a stepped Cu surface. Since the electronic structure of Cu does not allow for the splitting of CO at such low temperatures it suggests that there may be a less obvious pathway for the process. Through x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we can clearly identify products associated with the dissociation of CO and the subsequent formation of stable graphitic carbon on the surface. However, the dissociation of CO can be inhibited when the stepped Cu surface is kept clean from surface carbon. These observations imply that the reaction is driven by the presence of small amounts of weakly bound carbon at the surface. Density-functional theory calculations confirm that carbon atoms on a stepped Cu surface indeed are the preferred adsorption sites for CO, which increases the stabilization of CO on the surface and weakens the C-O bond. This results in the breaking of the C-O bond at the step edge via the Boudouard reaction (2CO(ads)→C(ads)+CO(2)) with a barrier of 0.71 eV.
