In situ ambient pressure XPS study of Pt/Cu(111) single-atom alloy in catalytically relevant reaction conditions

Abstract:Abstract The presence of multiple reactant gases as well as reaction intermediates in a heterogeneous catalytic reaction results in a complex interaction between different components of the catalyst with each gas, which can alter the surface and chemical state of the catalyst differently than in the presence of an individual gas alone. In this study, we used in situ ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to study the surface state of Pt/Cu(111) single-atom alloy model system in two catalytically relevant reaction conditions: CO 2 hydrogenation and CO oxidation. We found that the activation of CO 2 results in the formation of CO, which adsorbs on Pt sites at up to 400 K. In the presence of CO 2 and H 2 , Pt catalyzes the reverse water–gas shift reaction, which produces more CO and further stabilizes surface Pt atoms at 450 K. On the other hand, in CO oxidation condition, the presence of O 2 results in the formation of a thick Cu 2 O layer at higher temperatures, and Pt atoms are no longer detected in the surface and subsurface layers. When O 2 is introduced to the sample before CO, the formation of a complete Cu 2 O layer that covers all Pt atoms occurs immediately at room temperature. However, when CO is introduced at room temperature before O 2 , the presence of adsorbed CO on Pt sites stabilizes the surface Pt atoms and prevents the formation of a complete Cu 2 O layer, thus exposing the Pt atoms in ‘holes’ in the Cu 2 O layer.

Abstract:Under ambient conditions, copper with oxygen near the surface displays strengthened CO2 and CO adsorption energies. This finding is often used to rationalize differences seen in product distributions between Cu-oxide and pure Cu electrodes during electrochemical CO2 reduction. However, little evidence exists to confirm the presence of oxygen within first few layers of the Cu matrix under relevant experimental reducing conditions. Using density functional theory calculations, we discuss the stability of subsurface oxygen from thermodynamic and kinetic perspectives and show that under reducing potentials subsurface oxygen alone should have negligible effects on the activity of crystalline Cu.
In Situ Oxidation Study of Pt(110) and Its Interaction with CO.

Abstract:Many interesting structures have been observed for O(2)-exposed Pt(110). These structures, along with their stability and reactivity toward CO, provide insights into catalytic processes on open Pt surfaces, which have similarities to Pt nanoparticle catalysts. In this study, we present results from ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-pressure scanning tunneling microscopy, and density functional theory calculations. At low oxygen pressure, only chemisorbed oxygen is observed on the Pt(110) surface. At higher pressure (0.5 Torr of O(2)), nanometer-sized islands of multilayered α-PtO(2)-like surface oxide form along with chemisorbed oxygen. Both chemisorbed oxygen and the surface oxide are removed in the presence of CO, and the rate of disappearance of the surface oxide is close to that of the chemisorbed oxygen at 270 K. The spectroscopic features of the surface oxide are similar to the oxide observed on Pt nanoparticles of a similar size, which provides us an extra incentive to revisit some single-crystal model catalyst surfaces under elevated pressure using in situ tools.
The Role of Cu‐oxide and Cu adatoms in the Reactivity of CO2 on Cu(110)

Abstract:We investigate the interaction of CO2 with metallic and oxidized Cu(110) surfaces using a combination of near-ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy (NAP-STM) and theory calculations. While the Cu(110) and full CuO films are inert, the interface between bare Cu(110) and the CuO film is observed to react instantly with CO2 at a 10 mbar pressure. The reaction is observed to proceed from the interfacial sites of CuO/Cu(110). During reaction with CO2, the CuO/Cu(110) interface releases Cu adatoms which combine with CO3 to produce a variety of added Cu-CO3 structures, whose stability depends on the gas pressure of CO2. A main implication for the reactivity of Cu(110) is that Cu adatoms and highly undercoordinated CuO segments are created on the Cu(110) surface through the interaction with CO2, which may act as reaction-induced active sites. In the case of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol, we used theory to assess such sites to indicate that their presence may significantly promote CH3OH formation. Our study thus implies that the CuO/Cu(110) interfacial system is highly dynamic in the presence of CO2, and it suggests a possible strong importance of reaction-induced Cu and CuO sites for the surface chemistry of Cu(110) in CO2-related catalysis.

Abstract:Copper has excellent initial activity for the oxidation of CO, yet it rapidly deactivates under reaction conditions. In an effort to obtain a full picture of the dynamic morphological and chemical changes occurring on the surface of catalysts under CO oxidation conditions, a complementary set of in situ ambient pressure (AP) techniques that include scanning tunneling microscopy, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were conducted. Herein, we report in situ AP CO oxidation experiments over Cu(111) model catalysts at room temperature. Depending on the CO:O2 ratio, Cu presents different oxidation states, leading to the coexistence of several phases. During CO oxidation, a redox cycle is observed on the substrate’s surface, in which Cu atoms are oxidized and pulled from terraces and step edges and then are reduced and rejoin nearby step edges. IRRAS results confirm the presence of under-coordinated Cu atoms during the reaction. By using control experiments to isolate individual phases, it is shown that the rate for CO oxidation decreases systematically as metallic copper is fully oxidized.

Abstract:Considering the high activity in CO oxidation as well as the related reactions, the surface structure of Cu/Pt bimetallic system and its interaction with CO and O 2 molecules have been revisited with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in combination with density-functional theory calculations (DFT). The extensively concerned Cu/Pt subsurface alloy (Cu-SSA) is clearly demonstrated with relative deactivation to CO and drastically weakened binding to O. In contrast, the submonolayer Cu film on Pt(111) manifests a significant enhancement in activating the O 2 molecules while reserving the strong binding to CO at the uncovered Pt area. Detailed control experiments corroborated by DFT calculations revealed that the Cu/Pt interface serves as the critical sites for both O 2 activation and the CO oxidation reaction. Therefore, the submonolayer Cu film may register a more promising catalyst structure than the Cu-SSA configuration for the Cu/Pt bimetallic system.

Abstract:A series of model catalysts consisting of Pt single atoms and nanoclusters supported by monolayered CuO film grown at Cu(110) were successfully prepared, which could be stabilized well above room temperature and which exhibited a high performance in CO oxidation at temperatures as low as similar to 360 K. Combined scanning tunneling microscopy and temperature-programmed desorption measurements directly evidenced that at the initial CO oxidation stage, oxygen vacancy in the CuO lattice was generated at the nearest neighbor of the Pt nanoclusters. The experimental measurements showed that the oxidation activity was inversely proportional to the Pt nanocluster size. In contrast, the Pt single atoms possessed no surface reactivity for the CO oxidation because of the early and complete desorption of CO before its oxidation on the model catalysts commenced.

Abstract:Abstract Instantaneous electronic and structural modifications of Cu surfaces by high‐pressure CO were explored. At pressures over a millibar range the coverage of CO on the Cu(1 1 1) surface reached approximately one monolayer, and we observed several shake‐up peaks in the Cu 2p photoemission spectra for the first time by using ambient pressure X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These shake‐up peaks resembled those obtained for oxidized surface Cu atoms. We propose that these changes are related to the generation of a copper–carbonyl complex and subsequent Cu surface restructuring owing to lateral CO–CO repulsions. The generality of this finding was investigated in two model reactions, the water‐gas shift and CO oxidation, on a Cu(1 1 1) surface, and we clearly identified the pseudo‐oxidation of Cu. These reversible changes were found to be independent of the orientation of the Cu surface and are of general importance for Cu‐based heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:Catalytic CO oxidation on Pt(111) to CO2 was studied under atmospheric pressures of CO and O-2 and at various temperatures. Surface vibrational spectroscopy by sum frequency generation was used to probe the surface species, while the reaction rate and gas composition were simultaneously monitored by gas chromatography. Correlation between the turnover rates and the surface coverage of various CO species were utilized to identify the active CO species in the reaction. Ignition, above which the reaction becomes self-sustained, divides the reaction into two reactivity regimes. Below ignition, atop bonded CO appears as the major species on the surface, but the reaction rate is inversely proportional to the surface coverage of this species, indicating that it is not the active species but rather an inhibitor. The observed activation energy for the reaction in this regime suggests that desorption of atop CO is the rate-limiting step in the reaction. Above ignition, the atop CO becomes hardly detectable and the activation energy reduces to the one directly associated with the reaction energy barrier between adsorbed CO and O on Pt. In all cases, the reaction rate is linearly proportional to the surface coverage of CO adsorbed at non-registry sites or defect (or distorted) surface sites. They are therefore identified as the active CO species in this surface catalytic reaction.

Abstract:The in operando monitoring of catalytic intermediates is crucial for understanding the reaction mechanism and for optimizing the reaction conditions to improve the efficiency of the catalytic protocol; however, until now, this has remained a daunting challenge. Herein, we investigated the interaction of CO2 and H-2 with the Cu(111) surface in a CO2 hydrogenation model system by using the in operando technique of near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which is further assisted by ultraviolet photo-emission spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) measurements. These techniques allowed the direct observation of CO2 dissociation into CO+O on the Cu(111) surface and the adsorption of O on the surface at room temperature. The intermediate HCOO- was unambiguously detected in the CO2 + H-2 environment, which corroborated the formate pathway for methanol formation on the Cu(111) surface. We further found that O coverage can prevent the build up of graphitic carbon on the Cu surface. By taking advantage of the competitive interplay between Cu-O and graphitic carbon, we have proposed a feasible strategy for inhibition of the formation of graphitic carbon by tuning the CO2 and H-2 partial pressures, which may contribute to sustaining the active Cu catalyst under the reaction conditions.
Theoretical Study of the Role of a Metal–Cation Ensemble at the Oxide–Metal Boundary on CO Oxidation

Abstract:Identification of the active sites in heterogeneous catalysis is important for a mechanistic understanding of the structure-reactivity relationship and rationale of the design of new catalysts, but remains challenging. Among others, the boundaries at metal nanoparticles and supported oxides were found to be important and attributed to the active sites in various catalytic reactions. To reveal the nature of the active sites at the boundaries, the catalytic role of the inverse 3d transition-metal oxide nanoislands on Pt(111) for low-temperature CO oxidation was studied by density functional theory calculations. A characteristic Pt-cation ensemble at the oxide/metal boundaries as the active sites is identified. In Pt-cation ensembles, coordinate-unsaturated (CUS) cations exposed at the edges of oxide nanoislands are highly active for O-2 adsorption and dissociation, and less-reactive Pt binds modestly with dissociated O responsible for the facile CO oxidation. Inverse VIIIB-oxide/Pt boundaries exhibit high activities for low-temperature CO oxidation, and the corresponding activity decreases gradually from Fe to Co to Ni. The results rationalize a wide range of the experimental findings. To take advantage of the high oxidizing activity of low-valent VIIIB cations, FeO/Pt and CoO/Pt catalysts are appropriate for the reactions under oxygen-poor conditions, whereas NiO/Pt for the reactions under oxygen-rich conditions. The dependence of the activity and valence state of the Pt-cation ensemble at the oxide/metal boundaries is discussed, and the insight of the metal-cation ensemble as the active sites is highlighted.

Abstract:We have studied the catalytic carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation (CO+0.5O2→CO2) reaction using a powder catalyst composed of both copper (5wt.% loading) and titania (CuOx–TiO2). Our study was focused on revealing the role of Cu, and the interaction between Cu and TiO2, by systematic comparison between two nanocatalysts, CuOx–TiO2 and pure CuOx. We interrogated these catalysts under in situ conditions using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) to probe the structure and electronic properties of the catalyst at all stages of the reaction and simultaneously probe the surface states or intermediates of this reaction. With the aid of several ex situ characterization techniques including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the local catalyst morphology and structure were also studied. Our results show that a CuOx–TiO2 system is more active than bulk CuOx for the CO oxidation reaction due to its lower onset temperature and better stability at higher temperatures. Our results also suggest that surface Cu+ species observed in the CuOx–TiO2 interface are likely to be a key player in the CO oxidation mechanism, while implicating that the stabilization of this species is probably associated with the oxide–oxide interface. Both in situ DRIFTS and XAFS measurements reveal that there is likely to be a Cu(Ti)–O mixed oxide at this interface. We discuss the nature of this Cu(Ti)–O interface and interpret its role on the CO oxidation reaction.

Abstract:It is generally accepted that CO oxidation on transition metals follows a Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. The oxidation reaction takes place in two sequential steps where the oxygen molecule first dissociates into atomic oxygen and then reacts with an adsorbed CO to form CO2. One critical question concerning the reaction kinetics under high pressure is the probability of oxygen dissociation on a highly CO covered surface. On bare transition metal surfaces, molecularly adsorbed oxygen readily dissociates with little or no apparent activation barrier. In industrial diesel engine catalysis, the metal surface is initially packed with CO. Subsequent reactions such as oxygen dissociation must take place on a CO covered surface. In this paper, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations for O2 dissociation on Pt(111) in the presence of different CO adsorption environments. While several stable O2 molecular precursor states (top-bridge-top, top-fcc-bridge, and top-hcp-bridge) exist on a clean Pt(111) surface, these precursors become endothermic beyond a critical CO coverage of ∼0.44 ML. Furthermore, the reaction path for CO oxidation via dissociated atomic oxygen becomes less favorable at higher CO coverage, primarily due to competitive adsorption and lateral repulsion. It was found that the oxygen dissociation barrier and the binding energies of atomic oxygen are well correlated via the Evans-Polanyi relationship.
First-Principles investigation on the behavior of Pt single and triple atoms supported on monolayer CuO (1 1 0) in CO oxidation

Abstract:CuO layers coated with single noble metal atoms has been used in CO oxidation, but understanding of its mechanism is still ambiguous. A series of first-principles calculations were performed in this study to investigate the properties of a single Pt atom and triple Pt (Pt3) atoms supported on a CuO(1 1 0) layer on a Cu(1 1 0) substrate and their role in CO oxidation reactions. Calculations on the adsorption energies of O2 and CO2 as well as the subsequent energy evolution revealed that the Pt3 atoms were more active than the single Pt atom in CO oxidation. The catlyts surface with Pt3 atoms was reconstructed by CO oxidation, while no reconstruction phenomenon was found on the surface with the single Pt atom. Further, tensile properties along the [1 1 0] and [0 0 1] directions elucidated that the weak bonding between the Pt3 atoms and the substrate could result in the surface reconstruction.

Abstract:Cu-based catalysts are promising for CO oxidation applications with catalyst deactivation being a major barrier. We start with a CuO/Al2O3 catalyst and find that while the CO conversion decreases, CO2 accumulates and the average Cu chemical state stays the same. It suggests CO2 self-poisoning, i.e., CO2 desorption is the rate-determining step. Subsequently, experiments are performed to prove this hypothesis by showing (1) CO2 adsorption inhibits O2 adsorption, (2) complete desorption of CO2 regenerate the catalyst, (3) pre-adsorbed CO2 quenches catalyst activity which recovers during the reaction and (4) the apparent activation energy is consistent with CO2 desorption. It is further evidenced by using a stronger CO2 adsorbing support CeO2 to speed up CO2 desorption from the CuO sites resulting in a superior CuO/CeO2 catalyst. It provides an example for experimentally deciding and speeding up the rate-determining step in a catalytic reaction.

Abstract:The identification of the contribution of different surface sites to the catalytic activity of a catalyst nanoparticle is one of the most challenging issues in the fundamental studies of heterogeneous catalysis. We herein demonstrate an effective strategy of using a series of uniform cubic Cu2O nanocrystals with different sizes to identify the intrinsic activity and contributions of face and edge sites in the catalysis of CO oxidation by a combination of reaction kinetics analysis and DFT calculations. Cu2O nanocrystals undergo insitu surface oxidation forming CuO thin films during CO oxidation. As the average size of the cubic Cu2O nanocrystals decreases from 1029nm to 34nm, the dominant active sites contributing to the catalytic activity switch from face sites to edge sites. These results reveal the interplay between the intrinsic catalytic activity and the density of individual types of surface sites on a catalyst nanoparticle in determining their contributions to the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Identifying the active sites of catalysts under working conditions is crucial for precise understanding of reaction mechanisms and rational design of catalysts. However, the nature of active sites of bimetallic catalysts for CO oxidation is still a subject of debate. Herein, we employ in situ X-ray absorption and infrared spectroscopy to monitor the realistic structures of active centers in a bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalyst during CO oxidation. This catalyst brings 100% CO conversion at room temperature and 30-fold higher turnover frequency than monometallic Pt/Al2O3 catalysts. The in situ studies reveal that under the CO oxidation condition, a fraction of Co atoms are segregated from the PtCo alloy into the surface CoO species that decorates the remaining PtCo nanoparticles through direct Pt-O-Co interfacial bonds. The bond-valence analysis unravels one dangling Co-O coordination per Co2+ in the surface CoO, which acts as the active sites for O-2 activation. The synergy between the CoO species and the PtCo alloy brings the superior catalytic activity. We also show that the directly connected Pt-O-Co interface is more beneficial to the catalytic performance than the unconnected Pt-CoO interface and provides a promising strategy toward the design of advanced catalysts for the redox reaction.
