Abstract:Utilizing Red Sea water as a novel electrolyte for H 2 gas generation is achieved through a highly photon-trapping photocathode comprising poly-2-mercaptoaniline (P2MA) decorated on nickel oxide-sulfide (NiO-NiS). This photocathode features exhibits porous semi-spherical particles, each averaging 120 nm in length and featuring pore diameters of ~ 10 nm. With a bandgap of 1.26 eV, the fabricated photocathode demonstrates the capability to harness sunlight for hydrogen generation, spanning from the UV to the IR region up to 900 nm. The estimated hydrogen production rate reaches 16 μmole/h for every 10 cm 2 , while the generated current density (J ph ) stands at −0.63 mA.cm −2 . As photon energy gradually decreases from 340 to 730 nm, these photons facilitate the attachment of active sites, leading to the splitting of water molecules and the formation of holes capable of interacting with seawater for additional gas generation. This results in evaluated J ph values of −0.53 and -0.51 mA.cm −2 , correspondingly. The fabricated photocathode has great stability and sensitivity through sequential on/off modulation under various light conditions, in which the observed J ph has −0.004 mA.cm −2 , along with zero J o values at very limited voltage. The cost-effective fabrication of this photocathode employs a one-pot technique, leveraging Red Sea water as an electrolyte. This approach opens possibilities for the straightforward design of cells dedicated to converting seawater into hydrogen gas. Such systems could find direct applications in residential and industrial settings, offering solutions for both household and commercial energy needs through industrial and commercial treatments.
