Abstract:We propose different ways of lifting the notion of Dyck language from words to 2-dimensional (2D) pictures, by means of new definitions of increasing comprehensiveness. Two of the proposals are based on alternative definitions of a Dyck language, which are equivalent over words but not on pictures. First, the property that any two pairs of matching parentheses are well-nested or disjoint is rephrased for rectangular boxes and leads to the well-nested Dyck, $DW_k$. This is a generalization of the known Chinese box language, but, unlike the Chinese boxes, $DW_k$ is not recognizable by a tiling system. Second, the Dyck cancellation rule is rephrased as a neutralization rule, mapping a quadruple of symbols representing the corners of a subpicture onto neutral <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://symbols.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> neutralizable Dyck language $DN_k$ is obtained by iterating neutralizations, starting from 2-by-2 subpictures, until the picture is wholly neutralized. Third, we define the Dyck crossword $DC_k$ as the row-column combination of Dyck word languages, which prescribes that each column and row is a Dyck word. The relation between matching parentheses is represented in $DC_k$ by an edge of a graph situated on the picture grid. Such edges form a circuit, of path length multiple of four, of alternating row and column matches. Length-four circuits have rectangular shape, while longer ones exhibit a large variety of forms. A proper subset of $DC_k$, called quaternate, is also introduced by excluding all circuits of length greater than 4. We prove that $DN_k$ properly includes $DW_k$, and that it coincides with the quaternate $DC_k$ such that the neutralizability relation between subpictures induces a partial order. The 2D languages well-nested, neutralizable, quaternate and Dyck crossword are ordered by strict inclusions. This work can be also seen as a first step towards the definition of context-free picture languages.

On Some Complexity Results for Even Linear Languages

Abstract:We deal with a normal form for context-free grammars, called Dyck normal form. This normal form is a syntactical restriction of the Chomsky normal form, in which the two nonterminals occurring on the right-hand side of a rule are paired nonterminals. This pairwise property, along with several other terminal rewriting conditions, makes it possible to define a homomorphism from Dyck words to words generated by a grammar in Dyck normal form. We prove that for each context-free language L, there exist an integer K and a homomorphism phi such that L=phi(D'_K), where D'_K is a subset of D_K and D_K is the one-sided Dyck language over K letters. As an application we give an alternative proof of the inclusion of the class of even linear languages in AC1.

The Ehrenfeucht conjecture: a compactness claim for finitely generated free monoids

Abstract:We survey recent results on the so-called Ehrenfeucht Conjecture which states: For each language L over a finite alphabet Σ there exists a finite subset F of L such that for each pair (g, h) of morphisms on Σ∗ the equation g(x)=h(x) holds for all x in L if and only if holds for all x in F.We point out that the conjecture is closely related to the theory of equations in free monoids. We also state a suprising consequence of the conjecture: If it holds (even noneffectively) for all DOL languages, then the HDOL sequence equivalence problem is decidable. Furthermore, we give examples of when the conjecture is known to hold. In particular, we establish it for all binary languages, as well as for all languages when attention is restricted to bounded delay morphisms of some fixed delay.

Abstract:Within the framework of Riehl–Shulman's synthetic -category theory, we present a theory of two-sided cartesian fibrations. Central results are several characterizations of the two-sidedness condition à la Chevalley, Gray, Street, and Riehl–Verity, a two-sided Yoneda Lemma, as well as the proof of several closure properties. Along the way, we also define and investigate a notion of fibered or sliced fibration which is used later to develop the two-sided case in a modular fashion. We also briefly discuss discrete two-sided cartesian fibrations in this setting, corresponding to -distributors. The systematics of our definitions and results closely follows Riehl–Verity's -cosmos theory, but formulated internally to Riehl–Shulman's simplicial extension of homotopy type theory. All the constructions and proofs in this framework are by design invariant under homotopy equivalence. Semantically, the synthetic -categories correspond to internal -categories implemented as Rezk objects in an arbitrary given -topos.

Abstract:We define the monoidal category $(Poly_E,y,\triangleleft)$ of polynomials under composition in any category $E$ with finite limits, including both cartesian and vertical morphisms of polynomials, and generalize to this setting the Dirichlet tensor product of polynomials $\otimes$, duoidality of $\otimes$ and $\triangleleft$, closure of $\otimes$, and coclosures of $\triangleleft$. We also prove that $\triangleleft$-comonoids in $Poly_E$ are precisely the internal categories in $E$ whose source morphism is exponentiable, generalizing a result of Ahman-Uustalu equating categories with polynomial comonads, and show that coalgebras in this setting correspond to internal copresheaves. Finally, the double category of ``typed'' polynomials in $E$ is recovered using $\triangleleft$-bicomodules in $Poly_E$.

Abstract:Führmann introduced Abstract Kleisli structures to model call-by-value programming languages with side effects, and showed that they correspond to monads satisfying a certain equalising condition on the unit. We first extend this theory to non-strict morphisms of monads, and to incorporate $2$-cells of monads. We then further extend this to a theory of abstract Kleisli structures on $2$-categories, characterising when the original pseudomonad can be recovered by the abstract Kleisli structure on its $2$-category of free-pseudoalgebras.

Abstract:We define the notion of dextral symmetric algebras (not necessarily associative), motivated by the idea of symmetric rings. We derive a complete classification of dextral symmetric algebras of Leavitt path algebras, and right Leibniz algebras up to dimension $4$. We also obtain that a finite-dimensional dextral symmetric right Leibniz algebra is solvable if and only if it satisfies a weaker notion of nilpotency.

Abstract:This paper has two purposes. The first is to extend the theory of linearly distributive categories by considering the structures that emerge in a special case: the normal duoidal category $(\mathsf{Poly} ,\mathcal{y}, \otimes, \triangleleft )$ of polynomial functors under Dirichlet and substitution product. This is an isomix LDC which is neither $*$-autonomous nor fully symmetric. The additional structures of interest here are a closure for $\otimes$ and a co-closure for $\triangleleft$, making $\mathsf{Poly}$ a bi-closed LDC, which is a notion we introduce in this paper. The second purpose is to use $\mathsf{Poly}$ as a source of examples and intuition about various structures that can occur in the setting of LDCs, including duals, cores, linear monoids, and others, as well as how these generalize to the non-symmetric setting. To that end, we characterize the linearly dual objects in $\mathsf{Poly}$: every linear polynomial has a right dual which is a representable. It turns out that the linear and representable polynomials also form the left and right cores of $\mathsf{Poly}$. Finally, we provide examples of linear monoids, linear comonoids, and linear bialgebras in $\mathsf{Poly}$.

Abstract:We associate lattices to the sets of unions and intersections of left and right quotients of a regular language. For both unions and intersections, we show that the lattices we produce using left and right quotients are dual to each other. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for these lattices to have maximal possible complexity.

Abstract:Algebra Colloquium, Volume 31, Issue 04, Page 549-558, December 2024. We give some new characterizations of strongly one-sided [math]-invertibility of elements in rings, and establish the relations between one-sided [math]-inverses and strongly one-sided [math]-inverses. When [math], Kaplansky's theorem on the number of one-sided inverses is generalized to the case of strongly one-sided [math]-inverses. Moreover, we give some new characterizations of Dedekind-finite rings from the viewpoint of [math]-finiteness, and thus answer a question in [L. Wang, D. Mosić, The one-sided inverse along two elements in rings, Linear Multilinear Algebra 69 (13) (2021) 2410–2422].

Abstract:We consider the formal languages generated from kneading sequences (KS) in unimodal maps on an interval. The usefulness of an equivalence relation R(L) and the Myhill-Nerode theorem in dynamical systems has been explored. A necessary and sufficient condition for the languages being regular is proved. The minimal DFA for periodic KS is determined. A simple proof is provided to show that the language of the Feigenbaum attractor is not regular.

Abstract:This paper considers the word problem for free inverse monoids of finite rank from a language theory perspective. It is shown that no free inverse monoid has context-free word problem; that the word problem of the free inverse monoid of rank $1$ is both $2$-context-free (an intersection of two context-free languages) and ET0L; that the co-word problem of the free inverse monoid of rank $1$ is context-free; and that the word problem of a free inverse monoid of rank greater than $1$ is not poly-context-free.

Abstract:We study the notion of a "differential 2-rig", a category R with coproducts and a monoidal structure distributing over them, also equipped with an endofunctor D : R -> R that satisfies a categorified analogue of the Leibniz rule. This is intended as a tool to unify various applications of such categories to computer science, algebraic topology, and enumerative combinatorics. The theory of differential 2-rigs has a geometric flavour but boils down to a specialization of the theory of tensorial strengths on endofunctors; this builds a surprising connection between apparently disconnected fields. We build "free 2-rigs" on a signature, and we prove various initiality results: for example, a certain category of colored species is the free differential 2-rig on a single generator.

Abstract:Dendric shift spaces simultaneously generalize codings of regular interval exchanges and episturmian shift spaces, themselves both generalizations of Sturmian words. One of the key properties enforced by dendricity is the Return Theorem. In this paper, we prove its converse, providing the following natural algebraic perspective on dendricity: A minimal shift space is dendric if and only if every set of return words is a basis of the free group over the alphabet.

Abstract:A language A on a free monoid X* generated by the finite alphabet X is called a disjunctive language if the principal congruence determined by A is the identity. In this paper we study some properties of disjunctive languages over X with | X | ⩾ 2. We show that there is no minimal (and hence no maximal) disjunctive language and that the cardinality of the family of disjunctive languages is the same as that of the reals. It is also shown that if a discrete disjunctive language is partitioned into two subsets then one of them must be disjunctive. We prove that every non-empty word which is not a power of a letter is a product of two primitive words and then show that Qn is regular for all n ⩾ 2, where Q is the set of primitive words. But in contrast with this, Q(i)Q(j) … Q(l) is shown to be disjunctive for all i + l ⩾ 3. Here Q(i) = če:italic>wi | w ε Q⩽ce:italic>.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that one-sided Duo rings are (two-sided) McCoy. By doing so, we are then able to explicitly describe some of these ring element annihilators of polynomials in McCoy rings. We conclude the paper by showing the place of these results in the literature by way of an extension of a convenient diagram from a paper by Camillo and Nielsen.

Monoidal closure of Grothendieck constructions via $Σ$-tractable monoidal structures and Dialectica formulas

Abstract:We study the categorical structure of the Grothendieck construction of an indexed category $\mathcal{L}:\mathcal{C}^{op}\to\mathbf{CAT}$ and characterise fibred limits, colimits, and monoidal structures. Next, we give sufficient conditions for the monoidal closure of the total category $\Sigma_\mathcal{C} \mathcal{L}$ of a Grothendieck construction of an indexed category $\mathcal{L}:\mathcal{C}^{op}\to\mathbf{CAT}$. Our analysis is a generalization of Gödel's Dialectica interpretation, and it relies on a novel notion of $\Sigma$-tractable monoidal structure. As we will see, $\Sigma$-tractable coproducts simultaneously generalize cocartesian coclosed structures, biproducts and extensive coproducts. We analyse when the closed structure is fibred -- usually it is not.

Abstract:The classical Dold-Kan correspondence is known to admit a categorification in the form of an equivalence between the $\infty$-categories of $2$-simplicial stable $\infty$-categories and connective chain complexes of stable $\infty$-categories. In this work, we extend these concepts to give a categorification of the classical Dwyer-Kan correspondence by showing that the $\infty$-category of $2$-duplicial stable $\infty$-categories is equivalent to the $\infty$-category of conective chain complexes with right adjoints.

Monomial identities in the Weyl algebra

Abstract:Motivated by a question and some enumerative conjectures of Richard Stanley, we explore the equivalence classes of words in the Weyl algebra, $\mathbf{k} \left< D,U \mid DU - UD = 1 \right>$. We show that each class is generated by the swapping of adjacent *balanced subwords*, i.e., those which have the same number of $D$'s as $U$'s, and give several other characterizations. Armed with this we deduce a number of enumerative results about the number of such equivalence classes and their sizes. We extend these results to the class of $c$-Dyck words, where every prefix has at least $c$ times as many $U$'s as $D$'s. We also connect these results to previous work on bond percolation and rook theory, and generalize them to some other algebras.
