Abstract:Engineering nanostructures in metallic materials such as nanograins and nanotwins can promote plastic performance significantly. Nano/ultrafine-grained metals embedded in coarse grains called bimodal metals and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals have been proved to possess extensively improved yield strength whilst keeping good ductility. This paper will present an experimental study on nanostructured stainless steel prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with surface impacts of lower strain rate (10 s−1–103 s−1) and higher strain rate (104 s−1–105 s−1). Microstructure transition has been observed from the original γ-austenite coarse grains to α′-martensite nanograins with bimodal grain size distribution for lower strain rates to nanotwins in the ultrafine/coarse grained austenite phase for higher strain rates. Meanwhile, we will further address the mechanism-based plastic models to describe the yield strength, strain hardening and ductility in nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals. The proposed theoretical models can comprehensively describe the plastic deformation in these two kinds of nanostructured metals and excellent agreement is achieved between the numerical and experimental results. These models can be utilized to optimize the strength and ductility in nanostructured metals by controlling the size and distribution of nanostructures.

Abstract:An optimal proportion of austenitic and martensitic phases is achieved in isometric-phase steels through meticulously designed and elaborately calculated surface nanotechnology. Such isometric-phase steels with nanolamellaed structures and nanograins, exhibit surpassing combinations of strength, hardness and ductility (with yield strength of 1215 MPa, surface hardness of 8.6 GPa, and favorable ductility of 31%). A microstructure-based constitutive model is developed to investigate the deformation mechanism and mechanical performance in isometric-phase steels. We believe the light-weight isometric-phase steels in this work can be regarded as a finer counterpart of dual phase steels for applications in automobile, aircraft and nuclear industry. Abstract:Precipitation of multiple strong nanoprecipitates is crucial for the development of ultrahigh-strength structural materials with a strength of 2.5 GPa or above. Nevertheless, the ductility usually loses rapidly with strength due to limited dislocation mobility and high cracking tendency if coarse non-deformable precipitates are employed. Herein, we report a 2.5 GPa maraging steel strengthened by an ultrahigh den-sity of intermeshed shearable nanostructures consisting of Ni(Al, Fe) nanoprecipitates and Mo-rich ( similar to 30 at.%) disordered clusters, both of which assume coherent interfaces. The fully coherent B2-Ni(Al, Fe) par-ticles precipitate in an extremely fast fashion, effectively accelerating local aggregation of low-diffusivity Mo atoms and promoting the formation of Mo-rich clusters surrounding them. This elemental partition was found to be further enhanced by Co addition via depleting both residual Al and Mo within the ma-trix, leading to the formation of copious yet fine intermeshed nanostructures. During plastic deformation, the interlocked nanostructures not only enhance local cutting stress by combining long-range elastic and short-range chemically ordering effects but also improve dislocation activity and resist shear-induced plastic instability. The multiple shearable nanostructures endow decent ductility (> 6%) of the 2.5 GPa steel, suggesting a new paradigm for designing ultrastrong steels.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of The editorial office of Journal of Materials Science & Technology.
Ultrahigh strength in lightweight steel via avalanche multiplication of intermetallic phases and dislocation

Abstract:Lightweight high-strength steel has been an important topic for structural materials. Recent studies show that B2 intermetallic phase, nucleated around crystal defects such as grain boundaries and dislocations, can be used to further strengthen mechanical properties of metal alloys. Due to the limited density of nucleation sites, however, the current thermomechanical processing leads to formation of low density and coarse B2 phase. In this study, a lightweight steel Fe-Mn-Al-C (70 wt.% Fe) is processed by a thermal-controlled high strain rate plastic deformation process, warm laser shock peening (wLSP), in which high-density dislocations can be generated and high mobility of solute atoms at elevated temperature can facilitate the precipitation of B2 intermetallic phase. Simulations based on coupled phase-field and dislocation dynamics model are performed to investigate the intermetallic precipitation and dislocation formation during wLSP process. It is found that high density dislocations can be obtained in wLSP due to the pinning effect of B2 intermetallic phase on dislocations. The interaction between B2 intermetallic precipitates and shock wave facilitates the generation of high-density dislocations, which in turn serve as nucleation sites for B2 phase formation. This strong coupling effect results in avalanche multiplication of ultrahigh density and ultrafine B2 precipitates, and significant improvements in both strength and ductility. The yield strength of the lightweight steel reaches 2030Mpa with ultimate strength of 2850 MPa, among the highest for lightweight mid-carbon steel. This work provides a new insight to produce lightweight metals with ultrahigh density and ultrafine intermetallic phases for high strength and ductility.

Abstract:High-performance but low-cost structural materials with nanoscale precipitations are vitally important for engineering applications in advanced industry systems. Thus far, the classical nucleation mechanism assumes a critical nucleus of a homogeneous composition up to a sharp boundary with a large energy barrier of nucleation. A fine dispersion of nanoscale precipitates often requires strong solute supersaturations with expensive alloying additions or otherwise deteriorated strength-ductility, weldability, and fabricability. The simultaneous satisfaction of all these mutually exclusive requirements is the long-standing issue for the design of advanced materials for structural applications. In this alloy design, we have adopted a revolutionary approach of ultra-strong iron-based alloys that have resolved all these key issues through non-classical nanoscale precipitations and multi-elemental partitioning. Such an alloy design strategy offers a unique approach to control nanoscale precipitates with low solute supersaturations. Fine precipitations so designed lead to the strong enhancement of both the precipitate-dislocation interactions and work-hardening capacity, resulting with a sharp increase of the yield strength (YS) to as high as 1500 MPa and tensile ductility up to 15 %. Furthermore, our design assures outstanding fabricability together with superior post-weld properties through dense nanoscale reprecipitations (∼10 24 m −3 ) in a well economical manner for production. The non-classical actions unfold brand new pathways for precipitation of various intermediate structures and chemistries with low energy barriers, especially useful for the design of sustainable and economical modern alloy systems.

Abstract:Materials can be made strong, but as such they are often brittle and prone to fracture when under stress. Inspired by the exceptionally strong and ductile structure of byssal threads found in certain mussels, we have designed and manufactured a multi-hierarchical steel, based on an inexpensive austenitic stainless steel, which defeats this "conflict" by possessing both superior strength and ductility. These excellent mechanical properties are realized by structurally introducing sandwich structures at both the macro- and nano-scales, the latter via an isometric, alternating, dual-phase crystal phases comprising nano-band austenite and nano-lamellar martensite, without change in chemical composition. Our experiments (transmission and scanning electron microscopy, electron back-scattered diffraction, nano-indentation and tensile tests) and micromechanics simulation results reveal a synergy of mechanisms underlying such exceptional properties. This synergy is key to the development of vastly superior mechanical properties, and may provide a unique strategy for the future development of new super strong and tough (damage-tolerant), lightweight and inexpensive structural materials.

Abstract:<p>The strengthening effects of grain refinement and nano-sized coherent precipitation are effective strengthening mechanisms in the development of low-cost advanced high-strength steels. In the present work, low carbon dual phase steels with ultrafine grains and nanoscale copper rich precipitates were produced by a combination of warm deformation and isothermal aging processes. Then, the microstructure and plastic deformation behavior were explored using the EBSD technique and crystal plasticity simulations, and the precipitation mechanism of nanoscale Cu-rich particles was investigated by HRTEM, atom-probe tomography in combination with first-principles calculations. The results indicate that the formation and compositional evolution of the Cu-rich particles are associated with the mixing enthalpy of alloying elements and the attractive interaction between the solute atoms. Besides the precipitation hardening effect, grain refinement improve both strength and ductility of the steels significantly, while more severe deformation will result in the heterogeneous distribution of martensite, then intensify the plastic heterogeneities and early hardening of ferrite grains during tension deformation, thus give rise to a decrease in ductility.</p>

Abstract:Current study presents a way to control precipitates in a designed Fe-18Mn-8Al-1C-5Ni (wt.%) lightweight steel through annealing and aging treatment. The main objective is to obtain refined and homogeneously distributed B2 phases and intra-granular κ-carbides to enhance mechanical properties. After annealing, the microstructure consists of recrystallized austenite with polygonal B2 phases along grain boundaries (GB-B2) and intra-granular B2 phases (IG-B2). Subsequent aging leads to the newly dual-precipitation of both nanoscale IG-B2 particles and coherent κ-carbides within the grains. As a result, the aged steel exhibited a remarkable ultra-high strength (yield strength of 1220 MPa, tensile strength of 1423 MPa) and a total elongation of 35.8%. The optimized precipitation of GB-B2 (∼360 nm) and IG-B2 (∼150 nm) particles as well as coherent κ-carbides intra-granularly (∼2.6 nm) contributes to enhancing strength significantly with maintaining good ductility. Meanwhile, due to the non-shearing characteristic of GB-B2 and high-density IG-B2 particles, the investigated steel exhibits distinct enhancement of work hardening ability compared to lightweight steels reinforced with single κ-carbides precipitates. These findings provide valuable insights for designing high-performance lightweight steels by tailoring the precipitation configuration.

Abstract:To obtain ultra-high strength with guaranteed ductility, stable nanolamellar austenite packed with high densities of dislocations and nanotwins is inserted into nanolamellar martensite. An ultra-high yield strengths of 1.6–2.2 GPa at room temperature and 1.94–2.5 GPa at liquid nitrogen temperature were obtained in the steel, which is combined with good uniform elongation of 4–9%. The designed steel is shaped with the combination of solid solution strengthening, lamellar boundary strengthening and dislocation strengthening. The nanostructure is stabilized by C distribution, and in this way the stress–strain carrying capacity of martensite and austenite is increased, thus ensuring ultra-high strength. In addition, the generation of TRIP effect at low temperatures ensures the realization of strain-hardening rate and uniform elongation at ultra-high strength. Therefore, the nanolamellar martenite-austenite microstructure and strong carbon partitioning through martensite and austenite is considered as a fundamental guarantee for the ultra-high strength and toughness. Our results provide an optional strategy for the development of new ultra-strong alloys for low-temperature applications.

Abstract:Fe-Mn-Al-C austenitic matrix lightweight steels show a high ultimate tensile strength and total elongation but a relatively low yield strength. The yield strength is increased by coprecipitation of nanoscale Cu-rich and kappa-carbide particles. For lightweight steel, strips of Fe-28Mn-9Al-0.8C (wt%) are prepared in near-rapid solidification conditions, the addition of Cu up to 5 wt% leads to the coprecipitation of nanoscale Cu-rich and kappa-carbide particles in certain heat-treating conditions. The formation of Cu-rich particles has promoted the precipitation of nanosized kappa-carbide particles. The yield strength of particle-strengthened Fe-28Mn-9Al-0.8C-5Cu (wt%) austenitic matrix steel reaches 808 MPa with total elongation greater than 20%. Thus, the addition of 5 wt% Cu increases the yield strength of heat-treated austenitic matrix lightweight steel without seriously deteriorating its plasticity by coprecipitation of nanoscale Cu-rich and kappa-carbide particles.

Abstract:Disperse ferrite is generally embedded in lightweight steel, yet exhibits decent performance, thereby prompting a question: can heterogeneous design optimize it? Here, two representative structures, featured with discontinuous fibrous and dispersed ferrite separately embedded in the austenite matrix, were constructed as examples to address the issue. A heterostructure with fibrous ferrite shows a remarkable product (49 GPa·%) of ultimate strength and total elongation, standing out among other lightweight steels. Superior strength-ductility synergy is primarily attributed to hetero-deformation-induced strengthening and hardening. Abundant hetero-interactions imparted by phase boundaries, dense slip bands in austenite and dislocation networks inside ferrite serve as underlying physical mechanisms.

Achieving ultrahigh strength and ductility in high-entropy alloys via dual precipitation

Abstract:The strength-ductility trade-off has been a longstanding dilemma in metallic materials. Here we report an innovative approach to achieve a high strength-ductility synergy via dual precipitation of sheared and bypassed precipitates. (Ni 2 Co 2 FeCr) 96-x Al 4 Nb x (at.%) alloys strengthened by nanoscale L1 2 particles and Laves precipitates were selected as a model for this study, and their precipitate microstructures and mechanical properties were thoroughly investigated. The dual-precipitation-strengthened alloys exhibit a yield strength of more than 1400 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of over 1800 MPa, and a uniform elongation of 18%, thus achieving a high strength-ductility synergy. Our analysis reveals that the nanoscale L1 2 precipitates contribute to the strength via the particle shearing mechanism, whereas the Laves phase provides the strengthening through the Orowan bypass mechanism. The study of deformation microstructures shows that the L1 2 precipitates are sheared by stacking faults, which facilitates long-range dislocation gliding through the matrix. As a result, deformation induces the formation of hierarchical stacking fault networks and immobile Lomer-Cottrell locks, which effectively enhance the work hardening capability and plastic stability, thereby resulting in a high ductility at high strength levels. Dislocations are piled-up against the interface between the Laves precipitates and matrix, which increases the work hardening capability at the early stages of plastic deformation but causes stress concentrations. Obtaining Ultrastrong and Ductile Steel with Hierarchical Lamellar Duplex Phase Microstructure by Two-Stage Martensitic Transformation Mechanism

Abstract:In the present work, ultrahigh strength (yield strength approximately 2.1 gigapascals) and superior ductility (uniform elongation of 17 pct) were achieved by optimizing the partitioning–deformation–tempering (PDT) process of an initial duplex phase steel of austenite and martensite, by which transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP)-assisted hierarchically heterogeneous microstructure can be obtained. Remarkably, after the Lüders band deformation (the first deformation stage, Lüders band strain ~ 8 pct) at an ultrahigh stress level, a second deformation stage (elongation > 8 pct) occurred. The interaction mechanisms of Lüders band deformation and two-stage deformation and the resulting improved ductility were investigated systematically. Our detailed results demonstrate that this two-stage deformation mechanism is closely related to the two-stage martensitic transformations. More specifically, the dramatic variation in stress state from uniaxial tensile state to the triaxial stress state verified by finite element simulation during Lüders band deformation facilitates the concurrent explosive martensitic transformation of large austenite grains with several micrometers in the deforming Lüders band tracked by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction tensile tests. This also stimulates the activation of multiple slip systems, generating abundant crystallographic defects such as high-density dislocations, fine stacking faults, and twins in untransformed austenite with submicron grain size in the first martensitic transformation stage. These crystallographic defects in the preserved fine austenites serve as preferential nucleation sites for martensitic embryos in the second martensitic transformation stage, which follows the nucleation and transformation kinetics of strain-induced martensitic transformation and fully utilizes the TRIP effect. The two-stage controllable martensitic transformation mechanism provides new insight into the design strategy of ultrastrong steels with TRIP-assisted hierarchically heterogeneous microstructures for desirable strength-ductility synergy.
The Fabrication of Ultrahigh-Strength Steel with a Nanolath Structure via Quenching-Partitioning-Tempering

Abstract:A novel low-alloy ultrahigh-strength steel featuring excellent mechanical properties and comprising a nanolath structure was fabricated in this work using a quenching-partitioning-tempering (Q-P-T) process. The Q-P-T process comprised direct quenching and an isothermal bainitic transformation for partitioning after thermo-mechanical control processing (online Q&P) and offline tempering (reheating and tempering). The ultrafine nanolath martensite/bainite mixed structure, combined with residual austenite in the form of a thin film between the nanolaths, was formed, thereby conferring excellent mechanical properties to the steel structures. After the Q-P-T process, the yield and tensile strengths of the steels reached 1450 MPa and 1726 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, the Brinell hardness and elongation rate were 543 HB and 11.5%, respectively, with an average impact energy of 20 J at room temperature.

Abstract:Ultra-high strength lightweight steel has great potential in the automotive industry. An ultra-high strength Fe12Mn-9Al-1.4C-3Cr austenite-based lightweight steel has been developed in the study. The alloy is designed based on the precipitation strengthening of kappa-carbides while preventing the formation of intergranular kappa-carbides by sub-rapid solidification and Cr addition. The results show that the addition of Cr element reduces C segregation at grain boundaries by expanding the solid solution ability of austenite matrix. It can effectively inhibit the precipitation of intergranular kappa-carbides at the grain boundaries. Therefore, the ductility of as-cast steel is greatly improved from 14.0% to 47.8% by Cr addition. Besides, the strain hardening ability of the alloy is also enhanced with refined slip bands. The yield strength and tensile strength of the cold rolled steel reach approximately 1.5 GPa, with an elongation up to 15%. The ultra-high strength comes from the high-density dislocation hardening and precipitation strengthening of kappa-carbides. This work provides potential alloy design and processing route for automotive applications requiring ultra-high strength and lightweight.
Dual Nanoprecipitation and Nanoscale Chemical Heterogeneity in a Secondary Hardening Steel for Ultrahigh Strength and Large Uniform Elongation

Abstract:Nanoprecipitates and nanoscale retained austenite (RA) with suitable stability play crucial roles in determining the yield strength (YS) and ductility of ultrahigh strength steels (UHSSs). However, owing to the kinetics incompatibility between nanoprecipitation and austenite reversion, it is highly challenging to simultaneously introduce high-density nanoprecipitates and optimized RA in UHSSs. In this work, through the combination of austenite reversion treatment (ART) and subsequent flash austenitizing (FA), nanoscale chemical heterogeneity was successfully introduced into a low-cost UHSS prior to the aging process. This chemical heterogeneity involved the enrichment of Mn and Ni in the austenite phase. The resulting UHSS exhibited dual-nanoprecipitation of Ni(Al,Mn) and (Mo,Cr)2 C and nanoscale austenite stabilized via Mn and Ni enrichment. The hard martensitic matrix strengthened by high-density dual-nanoprecipitates constrains the plastic deformation of soft RA with a relatively low fraction of -15 %, and the presence of relatively stable nanoscale RA with adequate Mn and Ni enrichment leads to a marginal loss in YS but keeps a persistent transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect. As a result, the newly-developed UHSS exhibits an ultrahigh YS of - 1.7 GPa, an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of -1.8 GPa, a large uniform elongation (UE) of -8.5 %, and a total elongation (TE) of -13 %. The strategy of presetting chemical heterogeneity to introduce proper metastable phases before aging can be extended to other UHSSs and precipitation-hardened alloys. Achieving Unexpected Strength and Ductility Synergies in Heterogeneous Metastable Lamellar Steels

Abstract:High-strength steel with excellent ductility is pivotal for the formability and safety of critical structural components. Here, a heterogeneous metastable lamellar steel, composed of alternating lamellar ferrite and austenite aligned with the rolling direction, was developed through an innovative combination of warm rolling and immediate annealing processes. This novel design overcomes the strength-ductility trade-off, achieving high ultimate tensile strength (∼1.2 GPa) and excellent uniform elongation (∼78%), pushing the product of ultimate tensile strength and uniform elongation to an ultra-high level (> 90 GPa %). The high tensile strength is attributed to ultrafine lamellar grains and significant work hardening induced by the hetero-deformation and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect. The exceptional ductility is a result of the synergy of multiple plasticity mechanisms, including (i) the inherent plastic deformation ability of lamellar microstructure and the hetero-deformation-induced hardening in the early deformation period, (ii) the persistent TRIP effect induced by the lamellar austenite with high mechanical stability and the elimination of strain localization caused by prolonged strain hardening due to the coordinated deformation of lamellar austenite and ferrite in the middle deformation period, and (iii) delamination cracking in the late deformation period. This approach adopted in current work offers a straightforward and economically feasible pathway for fabricating advanced high-strength steel with superior performance.
