Abstract:Alloys with high yield strength and ductility are attractive for application because of their potential to offer mass reduction, energy savings, and enhanced structural reliability. However, increasing strength usually comes at the expense of ductility, which is commonly known as the strength-ductility trade-off for metal alloys. In this work, we explored a strategy of using a heterogeneous grain size structure and a reduced stacking fault energy in a CoCrFeNiMn FCC high entropy alloy to overcome the limitations of this trade-off. By this approach, the alloy achieved a yield strength of 980 MPa, a tensile strength of 1385 MPa, and tensile elongation to failure of 48% benefiting from cooperative strain hardening via multiple mechanisms, such as hetero-deformation induced (HDI) hardening, deformation twinning, Frank-Read dislocation sources and Lomer–Cottrell dislocation locks instigated by such structures. These micromechanisms of deformation help to harden the alloy via in situ refinement of the mean free paths for dislocations.

Abstract:In this work, multi strengthening/deformation mechanisms were introduced into a Ni-rich Ni40Co32Cr20Al3.5Ti3Nb1.5 (at%) medium-entropy alloy. After thermo-mechanical procedures, the microstructure is characterized by ultra fine γ' particles (2–18 nm) and short stacking faults. The alloy has superior mechanical properties with gigapascal yield strength, excellent ductility and strong work hardening ability. The initial high strength is caused by the blocking effect of ultra fine γ' particles, dislocation locks (Lomer-Cottrell locks), solute atoms and grain boundaries to dislocation movement. TEM observations at different strains indicate that the increasing number of stacking faults, Lomer-Cottrell locks and deformation twins are the main reasons for the improvement of work hardening ability during deformation. Twinning and dislocation slip, including perfect dislocations and partial dislocations, are the main deformation mechanisms. Our findings show that the coordination of multi strength/toughing mechanisms may be an effect way to enhance the strength-ductility trade-off.

Abstract:Developing advanced metallic materials with high strength and ductility is an eternal theme, however, the strength and ductility are generally considered to be conflicted to each other. Here, a simultaneous enhancement of strength and ductility is achieved in a commercial Al6061 alloy by combining the heterogeneous microstructure (composed of recovered zones and partially recrystallized zones) and nanoprecipitates. This unique microstructure is produced by the cold-drawing (∼61%) and pre-torsion (∼360°) followed by low-temperature ageing treatments. When the ageing temperature decreases from ∼300 °C to ∼150 °C, the nanoprecipitates changes from the coexistence of the needle-like β′ and rod-shaped β′ ′ to exclusive granular β′ ′ with refined size and increased volume fraction, which leads to the remarkable improvement of yield strength from σ y ∼176.0 MPa to σ y ∼340.2 MPa. Concurrently, the evading of precipitate-free zones (PFZs), the suppression of the grain-boundary precipitates and the formation of extremely fine nanoprecipitates (<5 nm) contribute to the unexpected enhanced uniform elongation (from ε u ∼5.3–5.6%). Furthermore, the hetero-deformation induced (HDI) strengthening and work hardening by the heterogeneous microstructure are also beneficial for the synergistic enhancement of the strength and ductility.

Abstract:Deformation twins (DTs) and stacking faults (SFs) are rarely found in Cu-20Ni-20Mn alloy, which limits further strengthening of alloy. Here, we report ultra-strong Cu-20Ni-20Mn alloy prepared by introducing a high density of coherent nanoprecipitates. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of alloy can be largely enhanced to 1624.7 ± 14.7 MPa, while maintaining an acceptable elongation of 7.3 ± 0.5%. We find that the coherent nanoprecipitates contribute to an ultra-high true stress up to about 1740 MPa, which facilitate the formation of DTs. The strength and ductility improvement stems from the synergistic effect of dislocations, nanoprecipitates and DTs. The Cu-20Ni-20Mn alloy sheet exhibiting an unprecedented strength-ductility synergy has been prepared by a two-step rolling process. The ultrafine grain structure containing substantial deformation twins coupling with homogeneously distributed nano-coherent precipitates accounts for the superior mechanical properties.

Abstract:A novel L1 2 precipitation-strengthened Co 51.3 Ni 19.5 Cr 19 Al 6.4 Ti 3.4 Nb 0.4 medium-entropy alloy (MEA) with excellent combination of large ductility and high strength was prepared via direct casting. The coherent ultrafine L1 2 precipitates particles (∼30 nm) with a volume fraction of 65% formed uniformly in the FCC matrix after heat-treatment, which endows this newly-designed MEA with superior tensile properties , i.e., a yield strength of ∼710 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of ∼1045 MPa and a uniform elongation of ∼31.3%, respectively. The blocking effect of ultra-fine L1 2 precipitates significantly contributes to the high strength of the Co 51.3 Ni 19.5 Cr 19 Al 6.4 Ti 3.4 Nb 0.4 MEA. In addition, deformation-induced nano-spaced stacking-fault networks, nano-twins and high-density Lomer-Cottrell locks facilitate the high work-hardening capacity, leading to excellent tensile ductility. This alloy design strategy can potentially be applied to many other alloys and open new avenues for designing strong yet ductile materials for engineering applications.

Abstract:Recent studies indicate that eutectic high-entropy alloys can simultaneously possess high strength and high ductility, which have potential applications in industrial fields. Nevertheless, microstructural origins of the excellent strength–ductility combination remain unclear. In this study, an AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high-entropy alloy was prepared with face-centered cubic (FCC)(L12)/body-centered-cubic (BCC)(B2) modulated lamellar structures and a remarkable combination of ultimate tensile strength (1351 MPa) and ductility (15.4%) using the classical casting technique. Post-deformation transmission electron microscopy revealed that the FCC(L12) phase was deformed in a matter of planar dislocation slip, with a slip system of {111} <110>, and stacking faults due to low stacking fault energy. Due to extreme solute drag, high densities of dislocations are distributed homogeneously at {111} slip plane. In the BCC(B2) phase, some dislocations exist on two {110} slip bands. The atom probe tomography analysis revealed a high density of Cr-enriched nano-precipitates, which strengthened the BCC(B2) phase by Orowan mechanisms. Fracture surface observation revealed a ductile fracture in the FCC(L12) phase and a brittle-like fracture in the BCC(B2) lamella. The underlying mechanism for the high strength and high ductility of AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high-entropy alloy was finally analyzed based on the coupling between the ductile FCC(L12) and brittle BCC(B2) phases.

Abstract:Coherent twin boundaries (CTBs) are internal planar defects that offer a promising pathway for designing advanced metallic materials with superior strength-ductility synergy. However, incorporating nanoscale CTBs into additive manufacturing (AM) microstructures is highly challenging without severe plastic deformation. Here, by utilizing the intrinsic cellular structures in AM alloys, we for the first time achieved a high density of multi-scale annealing twins in a laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) Ni35Co35Cr25Ti3Al2 medium-entropy alloy. These multi-scale annealing twins, together with nanoprecipitates and dislocations, resulted in gigapascal strength (∼1.4 GPa) and substantial tensile ductility (∼25 %). We reveal that the AM-induced cellular structures, decorated with entangled dislocations and Ti segregation at the cellular boundaries, facilitate the abundant nucleation of multi-scale annealing twins through interactions with migrating recrystallization boundaries. Additionally, the cellular precipitation networks enhance the thermal stability of nanoscale annealing twins. Frequent dislocation-TB interactions during deformation contribute to superior strain hardenability and thus good ductility. Synergized multiple strengthening mechanisms, i.e., boundary strengthening, precipitation strengthening, and dislocation strengthening, are responsible for the excellent strength. Our present findings advance the design of AM microstructures by harnessing the beneficial effects of cellular structures and provide valuable guidance for developing alloys with exceptional mechanical properties.

Abstract:Abstract Alloys with ultra-high strength and sufficient ductility are highly desired for modern engineering applications but difficult to develop. Here we report that, by a careful controlling alloy composition, thermomechanical process, and microstructural feature, a Co-Cr-Ni-based medium-entropy alloy (MEA) with a dual heterogeneous structure of both matrix and precipitates can be designed to provide an ultra-high tensile strength of 2.2 GPa and uniform elongation of 13% at ambient temperature, properties that are much improved over their counterparts without the heterogeneous structure. Electron microscopy characterizations reveal that the dual heterogeneous structures are composed of a heterogeneous matrix with both coarse grains (10∼30 μm) and ultra-fine grains (0.5∼2 μm), together with heterogeneous L1 2 -structured nanoprecipitates ranging from several to hundreds of nanometers. The heterogeneous L1 2 nanoprecipitates are fully coherent with the matrix, minimizing the elastic misfit strain of interfaces, relieving the stress concentration during deformation, and playing an active role in enhanced ductility.

Abstract:High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with a single-phased face-centered-cubic structure possess excellent plasticity but generally low strength. Precipitation strengthening is one of the most promising methods to improve the strength of alloys. However, plagued by a nerve-wracking fact that strength-ductility trade-off frequently limits the improvement of alloy properties. To overcome this problem, a new Ni35(CoFe)55V5Nb5 HEA with an excellent strength and ductility synergy was developed by introducing a novel bifunctional L12-Ni3Nb nano-precipitate. This HEA exhibits a high yield strength of 855 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 1,302 MPa and marvelous elongation of ∼ 50%. First-principles calculations show that the (Ni24Co18Fe6)3(Nb10V4Fe2) nano-precipitate with a L12 structure possesses lower formation energy than that with D022 structure. The novel nano-precipitates provide two-fold functions. On the one hand, L12-(Ni24Co18Fe6)3(Nb10V4Fe2) nano-precipitates have a high anti-phase boundary energy, contributing to a significant increment in the yield strength through precipitation strengthening. More importantly, the precipitation of the precipitates lowers the stacking fault energy (SFE) of the alloy matrix, contributing to the excellent work-hardening ability and large plasticity through activating the continuous formation of SF networks and Lomer-Cottrell locks during deformation. The strategy to introduce the novel bifunctional nano-precipitates paves a new way to enhance the strength-ductility synergy of alloys.

Dislocation obstacles such as grain boundaries<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03607-y#ref-CR4">4</a>, twin boundaries<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03607-y#ref-CR5">5</a>, solute atoms<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03607-y#ref-CR6">6</a> and precipitates<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03607-y#ref-CR9">9</a> can increase strength. Here, using a model, precipitate-strengthened, Fe–Ni–Al–Ti medium-entropy alloy, we demonstrate a strategy that combines these dual functions in a single alloy. The nanoprecipitates in our alloy, in addition to providing conventional strengthening of the matrix, also modulate its transformation from fcc-austenite to body-centred cubic (bcc) martensite, constraining it to remain as metastable fcc after quenching through the transformation temperature. During subsequent tensile testing, the matrix progressively transforms to bcc-martensite, enabling substantial increases in strength, work hardening and ductility. This use of nanoprecipitates exploits synergies between precipitation strengthening and transformation-induced plasticity, resulting in simultaneous enhancement of tensile strength and uniform elongation. Our findings demonstrate how synergistic deformation mechanisms can be deliberately activated, exactly when needed, by altering precipitate characteristics (such as size, spacing, and so on), along with the chemical driving force for phase transformation, to optimize strength and ductility.

Abstract:Recent studies confirmed that introducing nanoprecipitates as strengthening phase into high-entropy alloys (HEAs) is an extremely effective means to achieve the excellent strength-ductility synergy. In this work, we successfully created a dual nanoscale precipitate structure in a Co-free Ni 2.5 CrFeAl 0.3 Ti 0.2 HEA by controlling thermo-mechanical process. Compared to the recrystallized alloy, homogeneous L1 2 precipitates in FCC matrix and heterogeneous L1 2 /BCC precipitates near grain boundaries were formed in the aged alloys. The dual-nanoprecipitate structure induces a long-range back stress during deformation process, effectively contributing to a balance of high strength and good ductility at 298K. Especially, the mechanical properties of the recrystallized and aged alloys are dramatically improved without strength-ductility tradeoff, showing a multiple-stage strain-hardening behavior at 77 K. In the aged alloys, the nanoprecipitates shorten the mean free path of dislocation movement to effectively induce the precipitation strengthening appreciably depending on the precipitation size. Different from planar dislocations slip dominated by stacking faults at 298K, multiple stacking fault networks and deformation twins were activated sequentially with increasing the tensile strain, thus forming a dynamic Hall-Petch effect at 77K. The current work could help to understand the correlation between mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms in precipitation-strengthening HEAs, and the transformation of these deformation mechanisms provide an insight for developing outstanding-performance HEAs through trigging various hardening modes.

Abstract:This study explored a multi-mechanism approach to improving the mechanical properties of a CoCr-FeMnNi high-entropy alloy through non-equiatomic alloy design and processing.The alloy design en-sures a single-phase face-centered cubic structure while lowering the stacking fault energy to encour-age the formation of deformation twins and stacking faults by altering the equiatomic composition of the alloy.The processing strategy applied helped create a hierarchical grain size gradient microstructure with a high nanotwins population.This was achieved by means of rotationally accelerated shot peen-ing(RASP).The non-equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy achieved a yield strength of 750 MPa,a tensile strength of 1050 MPa,and tensile uniform elongation of 27.5％.The toughness of the alloy was 2.53×1010 kJ/m3,which is about 2 times that of the same alloy without the RASP treatment.The strength increase is attributed to the effects of grain boundary strengthening,dislocation strengthening,twin strengthening,and hetero-deformation strengthening associated with the heterogeneous microstruc-ture of the alloy.The concurrent occurrence of the multiple deformation mechanisms,i.e.,dislocation deformation,twining deformation and microband deformation,contributes to achieving a suitable strain hardening of the alloy that helps to prevent early necking and to assure steady plastic deformation for high toughness.
Tailoring nanoprecipitates to achieve ultrahigh strength (CoCrNi)94.5W3Ta2.5 medium-entropy alloys

Abstract:Metallic materials with high mechanical performance are in constant demand by various engineering applications. However, most conventional strengthening mechanisms inevitably suffer from fiercely sacrificing ductility, which severely limits service safety of metallic alloys, especially under various harsh circumstances. In this work, a novel ultra-strong (CoCrNi)94.5W3Ta2.5 medium entropy alloy (MEA) with dual nanoprecipitates is successfully developed. By conducting multiple thermomechanical processes, not only quantities of coherent γ" nanoprecipitates with D022 superlattice are introduced, but also massive semi-coherent η nanoprecipitates with hexagonal D024 superlattice are reconstructed with appropriate sizes and distributions, meanwhile ultrafine grains are achieved, together enabling superior strength-ductility synergies. This MEA exhibits not only high tensile strength of about 1.7 GPa and ultimate elongation of 23.8 % at room temperature, but also ultra-high tensile strength of about 2.2 GPa and still sufficient ultimate elongation of 13.2 % at cryogenic temperature. In-depth microstructure characterization indicates that the nanoprecipitates are effective barriers to dislocation motion at the early stages of plastic deformation. Intriguingly, the slip and deformation twinning could be transmitted across the phase boundaries with increasing applied strain, ensuring both strength enhancement and plasticity maintenance. At cryogenic temperature, much more complex deformation mechanisms are activated, e.g., multiple slip systems and high-density deformation twins, facilitating even better mechanical properties. The design concept of strengthening materials via tailoring dual coherent nanoprecipitates may afford a paradigm to develop advanced metallic materials with ultrahigh strength.

Abstract:Abstract Nanoscale small-volume metallic materials typically exhibit high strengths but often suffer from a lack of tensile ductility due to undesirable premature failure. Here, we report unusual room-temperature uniform elongation up to ~110% at a high flow stress of 0.6–1.0 GPa in single-crystalline -oriented CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy nanopillars with well-defined geometries. By combining high-resolution microscopy and large-scale atomistic simulations, we reveal that this ultrahigh uniform tensile ductility is attributed to spatial and synergistic coordination of deformation twinning and dislocation slip, which effectively promote deformation delocalization and delay necking failure. These joint and/or sequential activations of the underlying displacive deformation mechanisms originate from chemical compositional heterogeneities at the atomic level and resulting wide variations in generalized stacking fault energy and associated dislocation activities. Our work provides mechanistic insights into superplastic deformations of multiple-principal element alloys at the nanoscale and opens routes for designing nanodevices with high mechanical reliability.

An order-disorder core-shell strategy for enhanced work-hardening capability and ductility in nanostructured alloys

Abstract:Nanocrystalline metallic materials have the merit of high strength but usually suffer from poor ductility and rapid grain coarsening, limiting their practical application. Here, we introduce a core-shell nanostructure in a multicomponent alloy to address these challenges simultaneously, achieving a high tensile strength of 2.65 GPa, a large uniform elongation of 17%, and a high thermal stability of 1173 K. Our strategy relies on an ordered superlattice structure that excels in dislocation accumulation, encased by a ≈3 nm disordered face-centered-cubic nanolayer acting as dislocation sources. The ordered superlattice with high anti-phase boundary energy retards dislocation motions, promoting their interaction and storage within the nanograins. The disordered interfacial nanolayer promotes dislocation emission and effectively accommodates the plastic strain at grain boundaries, preventing intergranular cracking. Consequently, the order-disorder core-shell nanostructure exhibits enhanced work-hardening capability and large ductility. Moreover, such core-shell nanostructure exhibits high coarsening resistance at elevated temperatures, enabling it high thermal stability. Such a design strategy holds promise for developing high-performance materials.
Nanoprecipitate and stacking fault-induced high strength and ductility in a multiscale heterostructured high-entropy alloy

Abstract:Two-phase high-entropy alloys (HEAs) have high strength due to the contribution of interface-dependent strengthening, but the deformation incompatibility between the two phases causes instability. The initiation of cracks occurs at the two-phase interfaces, which ultimately leads to low ductility. To overcome this problem, the strategy proposed in this work is to introduce nanoprecipitates as a buffer zone and simultaneously promote stress release caused by the formation of stacking faults (SFs) at the two-phase interfaces, reducing the stress localization at the two-phase interface, thus improving the ductility. The Al 16 Cr 20 Fe 10 Co 30 Ni 24 HEA was chosen as the model material to evaluate this approach. After rolling at 800°C, the HEA had a two-phase lamellar structure consisting of a face-centered cubic (FCC) phase and an ordered body-centered cubic BCC (B2) phase. Recrystallization occurred within the FCC phase, and precipitates were present in both the FCC and B2 lamellae. The B2 nanoprecipitates in the FCC phase play the most important role, contributing to the improvement of yield strength and buffering the direct contact between gliding dislocations and the two-phase interface. In addition, the B2 nanoprecipitates also promote the widespread formation of SFs at the two-phase interfaces, leading to stress release. More importantly, nanoprecipitates are nucleation sites for SFs. The formation of an SF network improves the strain-hardening ability. The HEA shows a yield strength of 1,120 MPa and an ultimate tensile strength of 1,540 MPa while still exhibiting an elongation to fracture of ∼25%.

Abstract:The negative effects of thermal cycles in the process of additive manufacture present a challenge for the control of microstructure so as to fabricate the products with improved properties compared with conventional casting technique. In this work, AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high-entropy alloy (EHEA) was prepared by laser metal deposition (LMD). Compared with conventionally cast EHEA samples, the LMD-fabricated EHEA samples showed significantly enhanced tensile strength (by 19.7%) and increased tensile ductility (by 56.4%). Such enhancement in tensile properties was attributed to the refinement of the uniformly distributed eutectic-structure, which improved the strain hardening/dislocation accumulation capability of the EHEA. The present work provides a new strategy to utilize both the high cooling rates of LMD and the eutectic-structure characteristics for forming refined homogeneous structures and thus achieving superior mechanical properties to those prepared by traditional processing techniques.

Abstract:High-density dislocations and nano-twinning are known to significantly influence the work hardening ability of materials, presenting a potent approach for enhancing their overall strength. Here, a superior tensile strength-ductility synergy in a FeCoCrNiMo0.2 high entropy alloy (HEA) with high density dislocation and nano-twinning was achieved by employing cryo-rolling followed by subsequent annealing. Through electron microscope observation, the effects of geometrically necessary dislocation density and nano-twinning on tensile strength and plasticity are elucidated. The microstructure analysis reveals a substantial presence of dislocations and nano-twinning within the deformed grains following short-time annealing at 600 °C and 800 °C. The strategic presence of nano-twins serves as effective impediments to dislocation slip, resulting in the storage of dislocations within the grains, which contributes to the alloy's superior strength-ductility synergy and remarkable work hardening ability. Impressively, the obtained tensile strength-ductility matching exhibits yield strength and ductility values of 992.1 MPa/0.19 and 719 MPa/0.39, respectively. Upon increasing the annealing temperature to 1000 °C, high-density annealing twins emerge in the recrystallized grains, accompanied by a concomitant reduction in the geometrically necessary dislocation density due to dislocation rearrangement and annihilation. Furthermore, a small amount of topological close-packed (TCP) phase and L12 phase precipitation during annealing are observed, contributing to increased work hardening ability of the alloy. The findings underscore the importance of microstructural engineering as a valuable strategy for optimizing the mechanical properties of HEAs with a face-centered cubic structure.

Abstract:Simultaneously improving strength and ductility has been an attractive theme in materials science and engineering. Through designing nanostructures, it is possible to overcome the traditional trade-off between ductility and strength of materials. In this paper, we show that introducing superlattice intrinsic stacking faults in nickel aluminide (Ni3Al) can facilitate its strength and toughness. In comparison with twin boundaries, the enhancing effect of superlattice intrinsic stacking faults is more obvious. Most significantly, the yield strength of samples with superlattice intrinsic stacking faults is always superior to their single crystalline counterparts, indicating that the yield strength of single crystalline Ni3Al can be exceeded. These findings provide new insights into the nanostructural design of aerospace materials.

Abstract:Precipitation strengthening is a crucial strategy for ensuring the overall performance of conventional and multicomponent alloys to meet industrial demands. However, the mechanical properties of high-Cr-bearing alloys are often compromised by brittle Cr-rich precipitates at grain boundaries (GBs), leading to severe embrittlement. In this work, a multi-step thermomechanical process is employed to regulate discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) and static recrystallization, achieving an ultrafine-grained microstructure. This optimized approach simultaneously impedes the continuous precipitation of the ordered L1 2 nanocrystals within the matrix and actively encourages the synergistic discontinuous precipitations of submicron L1 2 and Cr-rich σ particles at GBs, thereby enhancing (yield) strength and high-temperature thermal stability. The ultrafine grains facilitate uniform plastic deformation, characterized by pronounced parallel dislocation slip and stacking faults (SFs) within face-centered cubic (fcc) grains, while second-direction slips, SFs, and Lomer-Cottrell (L-C) lock networks near GB precipitates greatly alleviate stress concentration. Critically, the submicron L1 2 particles enveloping σ precipitates at GBs also display plastic deformation via mechanical twinning and dislocations, effectively impeding rapid crack propagation along GBs. This research not only provides new insights into the ductility-strength balance in advanced alloys but also proposes a compelling route for optimizing biphasic precipitation, expanding the applicability of high-Cr multicomponent alloys.
