Abstract:Crowdfunding and other forms of digitalized philanthropy have created new channels of communication between donors and fundraisers. Nevertheless, new issues about privacy and security have arisen due to these advancements. Donors may lose trust in conventional techniques due to a lack of transparency on the allocation of their funds, increasing the risk of potential misuse or exploitation. This study suggests a new use of blockchain technology as a viable solution for difficulties in the crowdfunding and charity sectors. By leveraging the inherent immutability, security, and openness of blockchain technology, all transactions and fund allocations are documented on a public ledger accessible to all stakeholders. As a result, our system will operate smoothly. This solution offers real-time donation tracking from the moment of contribution to final expenditure and automates payment distribution using smart contracts. This is done to ensure that contributions are used appropriately. The initiative includes a feedback mechanism for recipients to report on the impact of contributions, setting it apart from other similar schemes. This terminates the relationship between the donors and the beneficiaries. The prototype showcases how blockchain technology may enhance trust and transparency, namely in the realms of crowdfunding and charitable donations. Blockchain-based solutions have the ability to greatly improve the efficiency of fund distribution and the transparency of financial transactions, based on user input and trial results. This can motivate more people to participate in acts of generosity and charity initiatives.

Abstract:Crowdsourcing systems which utilize the human intelligence to solve complex tasks have gained considerable interest and adoption in recent years. However, the majority of existing crowdsourcing systems rely on central servers, which are subject to the weaknesses of traditional trust-based model, such as single point of failure. They are also vulnerable to distributed denial of service (DDoS) and Sybil attacks due to malicious users involvement. In addition, high service fees from the crowdsourcing platform may hinder the development of crowdsourcing. How to address these potential issues has both research and substantial value. In this paper, we conceptualize a blockchain-based decentralized framework for crowdsourcing named CrowdBC, in which a requester's task can be solved by a crowd of workers without relying on any third trusted institution, users’ privacy can be guaranteed and only low transaction fees are required. In particular, we introduce the architecture of our proposed framework, based on which we give a concrete scheme. We further implement a software prototype on Ethereum public test network with real-world dataset. Experiment results show the feasibility, usability, and scalability of our proposed crowdsourcing system.

Abstract:Blockchain-based crowdfunding is one of the new, upcoming alternatives to the traditional centralized approach to crowdfunding. Traditional crowdfunding platforms are vulnerable to data leaks, high transaction and platform fees, and rampant frauds which happens due to the anonymity of user’s identity i.e., users cannot be identified when they commit cybercrimes. As blockchain is immutable and decentralized, it can reduce the possibility of data breaches. This brings in transparency as there is no central authority over the blockchain-based crowdfunding system. This paper attempts to solve these existing issues with the aid of a digital identity management system with an underlying Blockchain system. By implementing blockchain in a digital identity management system, malicious users can be identified and action can be taken against them. This paper explores donation-based crowdfunding using Ethereum as a framework and has been tested on the Rinkeby Test Network. This system can conduct several crowdfunding campaigns simultaneously. This paper explains the smart contract written in Solidity language in detail.

Abstract:Equity crowdfunding is increasing in popularity as an alternative to traditional financing for start-ups and growth companies to raise money for their business. This study discusses how equity crowdfunding is different from traditional financing, such as angel investors and venture capitalists. We argue this difference is brought further into focus when large numbers of crowd members invest small amounts, as opposed to fewer individuals making large investments. Building on existing research on Social Identity Theory, we look at why some crowdfunding campaigns are more likely to attract these contrasting types of investment (numerous small investments or fewer large investments). A model is presenting linking different characteristics of campaigns to total investment and average investment. This proposed model will be tested using public data gathered from Crowdcube, a leading UK-based equity crowdfunding platform. This study has significant implications for fundraisers who may wish to target different types of crowds according to the nature of their business, i.e. smaller numbers of passionate investors to provide informed input or larger numbers of casual investors to help create awareness and spread positive word of mouth.

Abstract:Crowdfunding has proven to be a viable strategy for financing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is a type of online financing that prevents intermediaries, such as banks, from obtaining economic support through contributions from users whose motivation may be in exchange for some type of reward and/or altruism. Blockchain and smart contracts support and improve crowdfunding platforms by removing the need for intermediate third parties, making it easier for users to verify how their payments are being used, and providing a transparent ledger for all transactions. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the academic literature on information technologies for sustainable development by developing a bibliometric analysis to identify the top contributing and most influential authors, countries, publishers, institutions, and papers on blockchain to support SDGs achievements through crowdfunding; by developing a classification framework that organizes in research categories and subcategories the current state of art; and by identifying the main findings and a future research agenda in each research category and subcategory. To identify, select, collect, synthesize, analyze, and evaluate all research published on the field, providing a complete insight in this research area, the PRISMA methodology, content analysis and bibliometric tools are used.

Reward-Based Crowdfunding Versus Initial Coin Offerings

Abstract:Inspired by emerging financing techniques that offer additional financing options for entrepreneurs, we establish a stylized model to compare two prevalent crowdfunding strategies: Reward-based crowdfunding and Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs). First, we highlight that the fundamental difference between reward-based crowdfunding and ICO lies in the distinct types of price distortion, resulting in different agency costs. Specifically, compared to the first-best benchmark, reward-based crowdfunding sets a lower funding price to attract more consumers to pre-order, while ICO sets a higher market price due to speculators’ revenue-sharing in the market stage. Second, we show that the financing limit (i.e., the maximum funds raised) of reward-based crowdfunding is driven by the platform traffic, whereas that of ICO is driven by the marginal production cost. Therefore, even with numerous speculators, ICO may result in a lower financing limit than reward-based crowdfunding when the platform traffic or the marginal production cost is high. Third, we explore how products’ cost structures shape entrepreneurs’ financing preferences. ICO suits intangible products with high fixed cost and low marginal production cost, while reward-based crowdfunding aligns better with products exhibiting the opposite cost structure. Finally, we extend our model to show the robustness of our findings and offer some additional insights. For example, ICO may amplify the risk of market uncertainty compared to reward-based crowdfunding; Security Token Offerings (STO) benefits from the absence of agency costs between the entrepreneur and speculators compared to ICO while it may suffer from equity loss, particularly in risky and regulated markets, etc.

Abstract:Blockchain, a promising decentralized para-digm, can be exploited not only to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional crowdsourcing systems, but also to bring technical innovations, such as decentralization and accountability. Nevertheless, some critical inherent limitations of blockchain have been rarely addressed in the literature when it is incorporated into crowdsourcing, which may yield the performance bottleneck in the crowdsourcing systems. To further leverage the superiority of combining blockchain and crowdsourcing, in this article, we propose an innovative hybrid blockchain crowdsourcing platform, named zkCrowd. Our zkCrowd integrates with a hybrid blockchain structure, smart contract, dual ledgers, and dual consensus protocols to secure communications, verify transactions, and preserve privacy. Both the theoretical analysis and experiments are performed to evaluate the advantages of zkCrowd over the state of the art.

Abstract:This thesis provides an in-depth exploration of the Decentralized Co-governance Crowdfunding (DCC) Ecosystem, a novel solution addressing prevailing challenges in conventional crowdfunding methods faced by MSMEs and innovative projects. Among the problems it seeks to mitigate are high transaction costs, lack of transparency, fraud, and inefficient resource allocation. Leveraging a comprehensive review of the existing literature on crowdfunding economic activities and blockchain's impact on organizational governance, we propose a transformative socio-economic model based on digital tokens and decentralized co-governance. This ecosystem is marked by a tripartite community structure - the Labor, Capital, and Governance communities - each contributing uniquely to the ecosystem's operation. Our research unfolds the evolution of the DCC ecosystem through distinct phases, offering a novel understanding of socioeconomic dynamics in a decentralized digital world. It also delves into the intricate governance mechanism of the ecosystem, ensuring integrity, fairness, and a balanced distribution of value and wealth.

Abstract:Crowdfunding is an act of raising funds from the public to support an individual or organizational project, and the success of crowdfunding projects lies in gaining backers' trust. In practice, however, crowdfunding platforms are rife with fraudulent crowdfunding projects. While some crowdfunding platforms use third-party auditors to verify projects before publishing, this also runs the risk of collusion between crowdfunders and auditors. The recent introduction of blockchain has increased the transparency of crowdfunding, but they, too, lack fraud prevention measures. Obviously, existing crowdfunding trust management schemes are not applicable under a zero-trust scenario. In this study, we propose a blockchain-based trust management mechanism for crowdfunding to address the fraudulent behavior in the existing crowdfunding systems. We introduce an auditor committee to audit crowdfunding projects credibly. A random selection algorithm on the blockchain enables the distributed generation of auditor committees with a trade-off between the randomness of selection and auditor expertise. The audit results are based on independent auditing by the audit committee members and are presented by the smart contract, avoiding the influence of third parties. In addition, we also provide an incentive mechanism to encourage auditors who perform accurate audits. Theoretical analyses and experiments show that our scheme can effectively deal with malicious behaviors and has an acceptable overhead.

Abstract:Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) is an efficient approach for large-scale sensing data collection by leveraging the mobility and capability of mobile devices. To avoid the weaknesses of traditional centralized crowdsensing systems, blockchain has been introduced to secure the process of MCS. This paper studies a location-aware scenario, where privacy of users are protected in a blockchain- based MCS system, and formulates an optimization problem to maximize the coverage given a budget based on reverse auction. An incentive mechanism named MMCB is further proposed and implemented as smart contracts in blockchain to solve the problem. We demonstrate that the mechanism achieves a set of desirable properties, including computation efficiency, individual rationality, truthfulness, budget feasibility, approximation, and privacy preservation. To protect the identity privacy of workers and obtain anonymity, a linkable ring signature is employed in smart contracts. In addition, a Pedersen commitment is utilized for protecting workers’ bid profile and the submitted sensing data is encrypted and only accessible to the requester. We implement a prototype system based on the Hyperledger Fabric platform, and the evaluation results show that our privacy-preserving incentive mechanism architecture improves 36.2% coverage and reduces 53.1% payment with better security level compared to the state-of-the-art schemes.

Abstract:Advancements in distributed ledger technologies are rapidly driving the rise of decentralized crowdsourcing systems on top of open smart contract platforms like Ethereum. While decentralized blockchain-based crowdsourcing provides numerous benefits compared to centralized solutions, current implementations of decentralized crowdsourcing suffer from fundamental scalability limitations by requiring all participants to pay a small transaction fee every time they interact with the blockchain. This increases the cost of using decentralized crowdsourcing solutions, resulting in a total payment that could be even higher than the price charged by centralized crowdsourcing platforms. This paper proposes a novel suite of protocols called NF-Crowd that resolves the scalability issue by reducing the lower bound of the total cost of a decentralized crowdsourcing project to O(1). NF-Crowd is a highly reliable solution for scaling decentralized crowdsourcing. We prove that as long as participants of a project powered by NF-Crowd are rational, the O(1) lower bound of cost could be reached regardless of the scale of the crowd. We also demonstrate that as long as at least one participant of a project powered by NF-Crowd is honest, the project cannot be aborted and the results are guaranteed to be correct. We design NF-Crowd protocols for a representative type of project named crowdsourcing contest with open community review (CC-OCR). We implement the protocols over the Ethereum official test network. Our results demonstrate that NF-Crowd protocols can reduce the cost of running a CC-OCR project to less than $2 regardless of the scale of the crowd, providing a significant cost benefit in adopting decentralized crowdsourcing solutions.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the emerging crowd‐funding phenomenon, that is a collective effort by consumers who network and pool their money together, usually via the internet, in order to invest in and support efforts initiated by other people or organizations. Successful service businesses that organize crowd‐funding and act as intermediaries are emerging, attesting to the viability of this means of attracting investment. Design/methodology/approach The research employs a “grounded theory” approach, performing an in‐depth qualitative analysis of three cases involving crowd‐funding initiatives: SellaBand in the music business, Trampoline in financial services, and Kapipal in non‐profit services. These cases were selected to represent a diverse set of crowd‐funding operations that vary in terms of risk/return for the investor and the type of payoff associated to the investment. Findings The research addresses two research questions: how and why do consumers turn into crowd‐funding participants? and how and why do service providers set up a crowd‐funding initiative? Concerning the first research question, the authors' findings reveal purposes, characteristics, roles and tasks, and investment size of crowd‐funding activity from the consumer's point of view. Regarding the second research question, the authors' analysis reveals purposes, service roles, and network effects of crowd‐funding activity investigated from the point of view of the service organization that set up the initiative. Practical implications The findings also have implications for service managers interested in launching and/or managing crowd‐funding initiatives. Originality/value The paper addresses an emerging phenomenon and contributes to service theory in terms of extending the consumer's role from co‐production and co‐creation to investment.

Abstract:Crowdsourcing is a task assignment technology that has emerged in recent years, enabling companies to reduce costs and increase work efficiency. Most of the current crowdsourcing systems (BCSs) built on blockchain focus on solving privacy issues and use rigorous proof protocols for task and solution security. Such systems cannot be directly applied in mobile environments because it would lead to excessive computational overhead for the endpoint. To achieve confidentiality of crowdsourcing tasks during transmission while reducing the energy consumption of mobile devices and optimizing task assignment results, in this paper, we develop a blockchain-based crowdsourcing model. We first build a model structure consisting of basic components, such as users, smart contracts, and blockchain, and design contracts to implement various crowdsourcing operations, such as registering, publishing tasks, and acquiring solutions. Unlike before, the ciphertext of the task and the encrypted secret key are embedded into the contract. This, together with the three operations we designed for users to interact with the smart contracts, can effectively protect the crowdsourcing data from being stolen while using the address anonymity of Ethereum to ensure the privacy of users. During task assignment, we use the DBSCAN algorithm to delineate each valid service area and implement the established multiobjective planning model within each area to achieve as many benefit goals as possible in the best way. Finally, we implement our prototype on the Ethereum test network Ropsten. The experimental results show that the cost overhead of the designed model is acceptable to mobile users, and the security analysis establishes the confidentiality of the designed operations.

Abstract:In developing countries, funding is a significant obstacle to receiving higher education. Brilliant but needy students cannot complete their studies since their parents are unemployed and their countries' economies are poor. As a result, the students' talents are not harnessed to their full potential. In order to help students obtain higher education and harness their full potential, governments provide student loans to students in higher education. The government provides loans to students through the ministry of education. The students pay back the loan with interest when they start working. Governments have been the sole funders of student loans. The emergence of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war have resulted in a global economic crisis. Because of the global economic crisis, the government's spending has increased. In order to help reduce the burden of government and thereby reduce spending, we intend to revolutionize the student loan program through blockchain and crowdsourcing. This work presents a blockchain-based crowdsourcing decentralized loan platform where investors will be brought on board to provide funds for students in higher education. The platform will allow students to apply for loans from investors through registered financial institutions. The students will pay back the loans with interest when they enter the workforce. The proposed platform will allow students to fund their education, investors will get interest on the money they invest, and governments can channel the money they put into student loan programs into other avenues. We perform a thorough security analysis and back the efficiency of our work with numerical results.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of data-driven innovation and information quality on the adoption of blockchain technology on crowdfunding platforms through adopting a mono method quantitativae approach. Micro-level theoretical perspectives have been less explored in studies of successful crowdfunding innovation than macro-level theoretical perspectives. Furthermore, crowdfunding platforms' performance varies because of issues like trust, information asymmetry, and transparency of funds flow, among others. There is a solution to these issues in the form of Blockchain Technology (BCT). While BCT has been adopted and used by other businesses, its adoption and usefulness for crowdfunding platforms have not been studied. We investigate crowdfunding platform success using the "task-technology fit theory" and "resource-based view theory". Authors collected primary level data from task owners of crowdfunding platforms to test the hypotheses. The proposed theoretical model is tested with a sample size of 314 business units, and the proposed hypotheses are tested using Warp PLS 7.0. We also control for the type of crowdfunding activities for our study. The study will help in understanding and improving the success of crowdfunding tasks on crowdfunding platforms. Additionally, it will contribute to TTF and RBV theory as well.

Abstract:Crowdsourcing has attracted widespread attention in recent years and developed into various applications. An indispensable service of crowdsourcing systems is task recommendation, which means tasks should be accurately recommended to the workers with aligned interests. However, existing systems rely on their separate servers to conduct recommendation services, resulting in computing resources locked inside each isolated system. Moreover, due to the wide attacking surfaces of traditional centralized servers setting, existing systems are subject to single points of failure or malicious data breaches. Therefore, failure to address these inherent limitations properly will hinder the wide adoption of crowdsourcing. In this article, we propose and implement FedCrowd, the first federated and privacy-preserving crowdsourcing platform by using blockchain technology. Our main idea is to employ the smart contract as a trusted platform for systems to release encrypted tasks, and carefully craft matching protocols to enable efficient task recommendations in the ciphertext domain. Our task-matching protocols are highly customized for the decentralized settings, where users can securely perform keyword and range-based queries over federated task indexes without sharing secret keys. We formally analyze the security strengths and complete the prototype implementation on Ethereum. Experiment results demonstrate the feasibility and usability of the FedCrowd platform.

Cheng Pages 1254-1260 (2019 Proceedings of the 36th ISARC, Banff, Canada, ISBN 978-952-69524-0-6, ISSN 2413-5844) Abstract: A construction contract facilitates payments through the supply chain by integrating people, activities, and events throughout the project period through obligations, permissions, and prohibitions in its terms and conditions. The management of payments is a manual process and is more difficult in the case of construction projects as different stakeholders at different levels of the project organizational structure are bound by different contracts. Moreover, payments are strongly affected by the lack of clarity in the definitions of the obligations, responsibilities, and liabilities of various stakeholders in construction contracts. This intensifies disputes and causes delays in construction payments leading to additional expenditure, cash flow problems, and lack of trust. Therefore, to address these problems, we propose a methodology to automate construction payments by formalizing them into smart contracts and executing on a decentralized blockchain based framework. We formalize the payment logic that binds the prohibitions and liabilities associated with financial commitments, such as interim payments on completion of tasks in a construction project, and convert it into a computer-executable code. A framework based on blockchain is used to host this smart contract and to automate actions such as the triggering of payments after achieving consensus among the relevant project stakeholders. This framework also address the conditions required for the security of information in construction projects, such as confidentiality and information integrity in a multi-party environment. The proposed framework is demonstrated through a case-based scenario.
