Abstract:Many marine species are threatened, and given the importance of biodiversity indices in the current European marine policy, taking stock of existing species and species diversity is crucial. Zooplankton form the basis of the pelagic food web, acting as staple food for fish larvae and adult pelagic fish, but are very susceptible to a changing climate. Inventorying zooplanktonic diversity is therefore important. Based on monthly sampling campaigns in 2009 and 2010, an update is provided on the zooplankton species list for the Belgian part of the North Sea. A total of 137 taxa are listed, some of which had rarely or never been observed in the area. This inventory revealed several species new to the Belgian marine species list: the calanoid copepod Metridia lucens, the cyclopoids Oithona similis and Giardella callianassae, the hydrozoans Amphinema dinema and Eutima gracilis, the mysid Acanthomysis longicornis, the polychaete worm Tomopteris helgolandica, the cladoceran Penilia avirostris and the monstrilloid copepod Cymbasoma germanicum. Additionally, we identified several males of C. germanicum, which have never been described before. Brief discussions are presented on spatial distribution and abundance of all taxa.

Abstract:Fairy shrimps (Crustacea, Anostraca) are specialized inhabitants of inland water bodies that periodically dry or freeze over. Here we report the first observation since 1997 of a member of this basal crustacean order in Belgium and the first sighting of the species Branchipus schaefferi Fischer, 1834 since 1930. Nineteen populations were found in a restricted area located 55 km SE of Brussels in the Province of Hainaut. Based on a field survey, we discuss the habitat characteristics of these populations. We discuss also the distribution and habitat requirements of the species based on literature and formulate a number of guidelines for the conservation of this species as well as other large branchiopods in densely settled areas with intensive agriculture such as Belgium. Finally, we formulate a number of likely explanations for the lack of recent observations of these organisms in Western Europe and in Belgium.

Abstract:Surveys in stone yards in Wallonia (southern Belgium) led to the find of six taxa of land snails being new to Belgium and one being new to Wallonia. The new taxa can be divided into two groups: living animals of the European species Charpentieria itala, Laciniaria plicata, Chilostoma cingulatum, and Theba pisana, and shells with remains of the dead animals in the case of the Asian taxa Cathaica fasciola, Acusta sp., and Bradybaena jourdyi. The latter are widespread in their respective Asian native range while Acusta sp. and B. jourdyi had never been reported from Europe. We discuss the role of stone yards as hubs for the dispersion of land snails. The individuals of the newly observed taxa may have arrived in several waves (with successive arrivals of stones) and may not reproduce in the stone yard. We explore the risks of settling. In this study, we provide evidence that the doorsnails C. itala and L. plicata have already settled elsewhere in Wallonia. Abstract:To date, only eight species of marine tardigrades have been recorded from the Southern Ocean. A total of 1210 tardigrade specimens were collected during various marine expeditions with R/V POLARSTERN: ANDEEP-1, ANDEEP-2, ANDEEP-3 and ANDEEP-SYSTCO. The sampled tardigrades belong to five families (Batillipedidae, Coronarctidae, Halechiniscidae, Styraconyxidae and Echiniscoididae), seven genera ( Batillipes , Coronarctus , Moebjergarctus , Angursa , Styraconyx , Tholoarctus, Isoechiniscoides ) and 15 species ( Batillipes wyedeleinorum , Coronarctus dissimilis, Coronarctus tenellus, Coronarctus cf. tenellus , Moebjergarctus clarionclippertonensis, Angursa sp ., A. abyssalis, A. antarctica, A. capsula, A. lanceolata, A. lingua, Styraconyx qivitoq, S. takeshii, Tholoarctus oleseni , Isoechiniscoides aff. sifae sp. can.). For the genera Batillipes , Coronarctus , Moebjergarctus , Tholoarctus and Isoechiniscoides , these new distribution data are the southernmost records and first reports from the Southern Ocean. Furthermore, the genera Styraconyx, Batillipes and Isoechiniscoides are reported from the abyssal zone for the first time. These new findings significantly expand our previous knowledge of both geographic and bathymetric distribution of marine Tardigrada.

Abstract:This work reports on 60 marine alien mollusks from nine countries across the Mediterranean Sea and the Sea of Marmara collected by two Belgian citizen scientists. Some of their published observations concerning collection dates are compared with the year of first publication for these alien mollusks reported in the literature, which enable us to backdate some of their introductions and set new first Mediterranean records for two species. This underlines the importance of collaboration between volunteers and institutional scientists in tracing variations and changes in the environment and biodiversity.

Abstract:A survey for slug- and snail-associated nematodes was conducted in forests, parks, botanical gardens, and nature reserves at 13 localities in Belgium to uncover more diversity of gastropod mollusc-associated nematodes and to characterise Pellioditis populations found in the country. A total of 319 slugs and snails belonging to nine species were examined. Arion vulgaris was the most commonly found mollusc species in this study (eight locations), and 19.4% of the examined mollusc specimens were found infected by nematodes. The highest prevalence of nematodes was observed in Cornu aspersum (60%) followed by A. vulgaris (34.8%), Limax maximus (28.6%), and Cepaea sp. (20%). Eleven nematode species belonging to eight families were isolated and identified from the mollusc hosts including Alloionema appendiculatum, Angiostoma dentiferum, A. gandavense, Angiostrongylus vasorum, Cosmocerca longicauda, Panagrolaimus cf. subelongatus, Pellioditis californica, P. hermaphrodita, Rhabditis sp., Tetrameres cf. fissispina, and Troglostrongylus cf. brevior.Pellioditis was the most commonly found nematode genus (at nine localities) and C. longicauda and P. californica were reported in Belgium for the first time. Co-infections of more than one nematode species were observed in eight (2.5%) molluscs specimens. Most co-infections consisted of two nematode species. In one A. vulgaris specimen, a co-infection of three nematode species (A. vasorum, P. hermaphrodita, and Tetrameres cf. fissispina) was observed. Four ex vivo cultures of P. californica and six ex vivo cultures of P. hermaphrodita were established from single hermaphrodites, and both species were described based on light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and morphometric, morphological, and molecular data.

Abstract:Benthic communities in continental shelf seas are influenced by human activities, yet assessing long-term change remains impeded by the scarcity of baseline data predating the proliferation of human activities. In this study, we considered the oldest macrofauna data from Van Veen samples collected in autumn 1970-1971 in a shallow soft-sediment seabed south of the Nieuwpoort Bank in the Belgian Part of the North Sea (BPNS). Both archived data in notebooks and hitherto unprocessed samples were considered. The community structure and biodiversity of these samples were compared with samples from autumn 2016. Furthermore, we compared (bi)monthly dynamics of indicator taxa for muddy sand ( Abra spp.) and fine-medium sands ( Nephtys spp.) present in the area with a time series collected in 2002-2003. Our findings reveal that both habitat types became richer in macrofauna species number and diversity. The invasive species that colonized the area between sampling periods explained <1 % of observed community structure changes. Overall, most taxa had higher population densities in 2016 compared to 1970-1971. Population densities varied seasonally, peaking in August 2016, and with less distinct recruitment dynamics in 1970-1971, confirming lower overall population densities in that period, especially for Abra. We discuss these results in relation to datasets discrepancies, climate variability, and sediment fining, acknowledging limitations in sampling design and processing methods. Nevertheless, this data rescue exercise proved valuable for understanding marine ecosystem changes, highlighting the potential of 'old' archived data and samples from the early Anthropocene.

Abstract:Nematodes are one of the key organisms in the terrestrial ecosystems of Antarctica. Their exceptional cryptobiotic adaptations against freezing and desiccation stress have attracted significant research attention. However, even today, relatively little is known about the biology of nematodes across this continent, especially in terms of their biodiversity and distribution. To address such fundamental research areas, correct classification of Antarctic nematodes is a necessary underpinning. Until recently, morphological examination has been the only established method available, and this remains challenging even for experts. Advances in molecular biological techniques now provide a complementary approach to nematode classification, but as yet have largely not been applied to the Antarctic fauna. In this study we initiate development of cataloguing of Antarctic nematodes using both morphological and molecular information from individual worms. We collected nematode samples from islands in maritime Antarctica (Signy, Adelaide and Léonie Islands; a latitudinal range between the South Orkney Islands and Marguerite Bay), and classified them by DNA sequence obtained from morphologically-determined samples. We obtained small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA) sequence data from seven major maritime Antarctic nematode species, which will permit future identification of these species without the requirement for detailed morphological taxonomic analyses. We also trialled the application of molecular analyses to morphologically unidentified samples from King George Island, thereby obtaining support for our approach through the identification of samples with identical sequences. This approach provides baseline information for future studies of Antarctic nematodes.

Abstract:Dinoflagellates belonging to the genus Hematodinium are key parasites of marine crustaceans, primarily decapods. In this study, we document the first report of H. perezi Chatton & Poisson, 1930 on the African Atlantic coast. This is also the first parasite record in the invasive non-native Atlantic blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 in Morocco. Specimens of C. sapidus were sampled in winter 2023 from two Ramsar sites on the Moroccan Atlantic, namely Merja Zerga and Oualidia Lagoons, and were screened to detect the presence of parasites in their hemolymph. Based on staining fresh hemolymph smears, we did not detect Hematodinium in any of the 36 investigated individuals (20 and 16 from Merja Zerga and Oualidia Lagoons, respectively), probably due to methodological artifacts. The PCR-based method was revealed to be more accurate in diagnosing the Hematodinium parasite. It showed that at Merja Zerga Lagoon, 13 individuals of C. sapidus were infected by the parasite (prevalence: 65%) in comparison to four at Oualidia Lagoon (25%). Genetic analysis, based on the ITS1 rDNA gene from Hematodinium, confirmed the sequences as being those of Hematodinium perezi.

Abstract:Bivalve diseases caused by protozoan parasitic infection are monitored by coordinated surveillance programs across European member countries. These routine monitorings of bivalve health, however, only survey a few relatively well known parasites, which may leave undetected a range of lesser known opportunistic protozoan agents. Under increased stress, for example due to shifting environmental conditions affecting water quality and nutrient access, these opportunistic parasites may develop pathogenicity impacting reproduction or growth and therefore decreasing the success and future development of aquaculture or wild population sustainability. During routine histopathological surveillance of blue mussels in Sweden, we noticed cryptic lesions in the adductor muscle in high prevalence over a period ranging from 2017 to 2022. These lesions suggested cell infiltration and degenerative changes in the muscle tissues. In this study, we report on the isolation, identification, and culture of the protistan cells likely responsible for at least some of these lesions. Using histology and cytology, molecular phylogeny, and catalyzed reporter deposition fluorescence in situ hybridization (CARD-FISH), we show that the cells correspond to the H. nelsoni sequence initially isolated from oysters. We also reveal the presence of H. nelsoni in the digestive glands and mantel, and that this parasite might be horizontally transmitted from adult to larvae via infections within gonads, ovaries. This study represents the first report of H. nelsoni in blue mussel.

Abstract:Four species of marine tardigrades were found in deep sea sediment samples of the Newfoundland Basin in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. Samples were collected during expedition SO286 at more than 3000 m depth in an abyssal area that belongs to the intended new marine protected area "North Atlantic Current and Evlanov Seamount" (NACES). The genus Coronarctus was represented by two specimens of C. dissimilis . The genus Angursa was represented by four specimens of A. capsula , five specimens of A. abyssalis , and one specimen of A. lanceolata . In order to investigate the morphology and morphometry, we primarily used light microscopy with differential interference contrast. However, some specimens were additionally investigated with confocal laser scanning and scanning electron microscopy. The morphological and morphometric details and the new geographic records of the four identified species increase our knowledge of the taxonomy and biogeography of marine tardigrades. For C. dissimilis and A. lanceolata , the new records could indicate a pan-Atlantic distribution for both species, which were so far only known from the South Atlantic Ocean. The new record of A. capsula is even more remarkable since that species was so far only known from its type locality in the East Pacific deep sea.
