Abstract:We study a theory of particles interacting with strings. Considering such a theory for Type IIA superstring will give some clue about M-theory. As a first step toward such a theory, we construct the particle-particle-string interaction vertex generalizing the D-particle boundary state.

Abstract:In a previous paper (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/9808141" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/9808141">hep-th/9808141</a>) we showed that the type I string theory contains a stable non-BPS D-particle carrying SO(32) spinor charge. In this paper we formulate the rules for computing the spectrum and interaction of open strings with one or both ends lying on this D-particle.

Abstract:We clarify the relation between the vertex operators in type IIB matrix model and superstring. Green-Schwarz light-cone closed superstring theory is obtained from IIB matrix model on two-dimensional noncommutative backgrounds. Superstring vertex operators should be reproduced from those of IIB matrix model through this connection. Indeed, we confirm that supergravity vertex operators in IIB matrix model on the two-dimensional backgrounds reduce to those in superstring theory. Noncommutativity plays an important role in our identification. Through this correspondence, we can reproduce superstring scattering amplitudes from IIB matrix model.

D-strings in unconventional type I vacuum configurations

Abstract:We determine the spectrum of D-string bound states in various classes of generalized type I vacuum configurations with sixteen and eight supercharges. The precise matching of the BPS spectra confirms the duality between unconventional type IIB orientifolds with quantized NS-NS antisymmetric tensor and heterotic CHL models in D=8. A similar analysis puts the duality between type II (4,0) models and type I strings {\it without open strings} on a firmer ground. The analysis can be extended to type II (2,0) asymmetric orbifolds and their type I duals that correspond to unconventional K3 compactifications. Finally we discuss BPS-saturated threshold corrections to the correponding low-energy effective lagrangians. In particular we show how the exact moduli dependence of some F^4 terms in the eight-dimensional type II (4,0) orbifold is reproduced by the infinite sum of D-instanton contributions in the dual type I theory.

Abstract:We review particle physics model building in type IIB string theory and F-theory. This is a region in the landscape where in principle many of the key ingredients required for a realistic model of particle physics can be combined successfully. We begin by reviewing moduli stabilisation within this framework and its implications for supersymmetry breaking. We then review model building tools and developments in the weakly coupled type IIB limit, for both local D3-branes at singularities and global models of intersecting D7-branes. Much of recent model building work has been in the strongly coupled regime of F-theory due to the presence of exceptional symmetries which allow for the construction of phenomenologically appealing Grand Unified Theories. We review both local and global F-theory model building starting from the fundamental concepts and tools regarding how the gauge group, matter sector and operators arise, and ranging to detailed phenomenological properties explored in the literature.

Abstract:We propose the stringy description of the system consisting of two heavy and four light quarks in the case of two light flavors of equal mass. As an application, we consider the three low-lying Born-Oppenheimer potentials as a function of the heavy quark separation. Our analysis shows that the ground state potential is described in terms of both hadroquarkonia and hadronic molecules. A connected string configuration makes the dominant contribution to the potential of an excited state at small separations, and for separations larger than 0.1 fm, it exhibits the diquark-diquark-diquark structure [Qq][Qq][qq] . For better understanding the quark organization inside the system, we introduce several critical separations related to the processes of string reconnection, breaking and junction annihilation. Abstract:Is string theory uniquely determined by self-consistency? Causality and unitarity seemingly permit a multitude of putative deformations, at least at the level of two-to-two scattering. Motivated by this question, we initiate a systematic exploration of the constraints on scattering from higher-point factorization, which imposes extraordinarily restrictive sum rules on the residues and spectra defined by a given amplitude. These bounds handily exclude several proposed deformations of the string: the simplest "bespoke" amplitudes with tunable masses and a family of modified string integrands from "binary geometry." While the string itself passes all tests, our formalism directly extracts the three-point amplitudes for the low-lying string modes without the aid of worldsheet vertex operators.

The effective potential for string backgrounds from string geometry theory

Abstract:String geometry theory is one of the candidates of the non-perturbative formulation of string theory. In this paper, in the bosonic sector of string geometry theory, we identify perturbative vacua in bosonic string theory, which include general string backgrounds. From fluctuations around these vacua, we derive the path-integrals of perturbative strings on the string backgrounds up to any order. Furthermore, the identification of the perturbative vacua enables us to obtain differential equations that determine an effective potential for string backgrounds. We solve the differential equations and obtain an effective potential explicitly up to the second order. In a generic region, we show that the minimum of the second order potential gives a non-trivial background. This fact supports that the full effective potential can determine the true vacuum in string theory.

Abstract:We study gauge/string duality with flavor degrees of freedom in type 0B string theory. We construct a model by placing the N_f probe D9_-/anti-D9_- brane pairs in the background of the N_c electric D3-branes. This model has some features in common with QCD, as in AdS/QCD model. By analyzing the effective action, we obtain the linear confinement behavior for the masses of the highly excited spin-1 mesons.

Abstract:We study vortex-strings in four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric SU(Nc)xU(1) gauge theories with Nf hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of SU(Nc) and general U(1) charges. If Nf>Nc, the vacuum is not gapped and the low-energy theory contains both the vacuum massless excitations and the string zero-modes. The question we address in this work is whether the vacuum and the string moduli decouple at low energies, allowing a description of the low-energy dynamics in terms of a two-dimensional theory on the string worldsheet. We find a simple condition controlling the bulk-string coupling: If there exist two flavors such that the product of their U(1) charge difference with the magnetic flux carried by the string configuration is not an integer multiple of 2\pi, the string has zero-modes that decay slower than 1/r, where r is the radial distance from the string core. These modes are coupled to the vacuum massless excitations even at low energies. If, however, all such products are integer multiples of 2\pi, long-range modes of this type do not exist and the string moduli decouple from the bulk at low energies. This condition turns out to coincide with the condition of trivial Aharonov-Bohm phases for the particles in the spectrum. In addition to a derivation of the bulk-string decoupling criterion using classical analysis of the string zero-modes, we provide a non-perturbative derivation of the criterion, which uses supersymmetric localization techniques.

Type IIA String Theory and tmf with Level Structure

Abstract:We look at a new string$^h$ tangential structure first introduced by Devalapurkar and relate it to the $W_7=0$ condition of Diaconescu-Moore-Witten for type IIA string theory and M-theory. We show that a string$^h$ structure on the target space automatically satisfies the $W_7=0$ condition and we also explain when the $W_7=0$ condition gives rise to a string$^h$ structure. Devalapurkar initially constructed $MString^h$ in such a way that it orients $tmf_1(3)$, we extend Devalapurkar's orientation and show that $MString^h$ orients $tmf_1(n)$. We compute the homotopy groups of $MString^h$ in the dimensions relevant for physical applications, and apply them to anomaly cancellation applications for compactifications of type IIA string theory.

Abstract:The {\it string theory} seems to be a mathematically consistent way for explaining so far observed fermion and boson second quantized fields, with gravity included, by offering the renormalizability of the theory by extending the point fermions and bosons into strings and by offering the supersymmetry among fermions and bosons. In a long series of works one of the authors in collaboration with another author and other collaborators, has found the phenomenological success with the model named the {\it spin-charge-family} theory with the properties: The creation and annihilation operators for fermions and bosons fields are described as tensor products of the Clifford odd (for fermions) and the Clifford even (for bosons) ``basis vectors'' and basis in ordinary space, explaining the second quantization postulates. The theory offers the explanation for the observed properties of fermion and bosons and for several cosmological observations. Since the number of creation and annihilation operators for fermions and bosons is in this theory the same, manifesting correspondingly a kind of supersymmetry, the authors start to study in this contribution the properties of the creation and annihilation operators if extending the point fermions and bosons into strings, expecting that this theory offers the low energy limit for the {\it string theory}.

Topological string as massive spinning particle in three dimensions

Abstract:A model is proposed for a classical bosonic string in $d=3$ Minkowski space with an action functional that includes Gauss and mean world-sheet curvature. The Lagrangian is invariant under $3d$ Poincaré transformations modulo total divergence. In addition to the diffeomorphism, the action enjoys the extra gauge symmetry with the second derivatives of the scalar gauge parameter. This symmetry gauges out all the local degrees of freedom (DoF's), while some global DoF's survive. The Hamiltonian constrained analysis confirms that the model does not have any local DoF. The world sheet of the string turns out to be a cylinder with time-like axis. The global DoF's of this string describe one single irreducible massive $3d$ particle with spin. The particle momentum is a conserved vector directed along the cylinder axis while the momentum square is a fixed constant determined by the parameters in the action. The total angular momentum is a conserved vector that defines the position of the axis of the cylinder whose specific value is defined by initial data, while the spin, being the product of momentum and angular momentum is fixed by the parameters in the string Lagrangian.

Quantum Moduli Spaces of $N=1$ String Theories

Abstract:Generically, string models with $N=1$ supersymmetry are not expected to have moduli beyond perturbation theory; stringy non-perturbative effects as well as low energy field-theoretic phenomena such as gluino condensation will lift any flat directions. In this note, we describe models where some subspace of the moduli space survives non-perturbatively. Discrete $R$ symmetries forbid any inherently stringy effects, and dynamical considerations control the field-theoretic effects. The surviving subspace is a space of high symmetry; the system is attracted to this subspace by a potential which we compute. Models of this type may be useful for considerations of duality and raise troubling cosmological questions about string theory. Our considerations also suggest a mechanism for fixing the expectation value of the dilaton.
